S5:Episode 15- Flow Testing The TWR 6.1 Liter Jaguar V-12 Cylinder Head.
มุมมอง 74814 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this episode, I visit Jason Anderson of Janderson Heads in Lakeville, Minnesota. Since the engine came in the shop, I've wanted to do this to determine how much better the TWR 6.1 Liter Jaguar V-12 cylinder head flowed than the stock head. This will be a two part series of videos in which we compare not only the two Pre-HE heads, but also look at data from the tests run on the intake ports o...

Let's take a look at the pistons for the TWR Jaguar 6.1 Liter V-12 and Jaguar E Type 5.3 Liter V-12 engines before they disappear into their respective blocks not be seen again in my lifetime. There are some surprising similarities but for the most part the differnces are striking.

In this episode, I will make a final attempt to get "Big Red", my recently acquired 1989 Jaguar XJS Rouge Edition, running and driving. Hello Rob, Thanks a lot for the review of my Harness Prototype. Looking forward to seeing it running on one of your engines soon. Don`t be afraid to bend it in the reinforced area between the main connector and the first branching point. I did several torture tests with the first prototype, and it handled a lot of abuse without issues. And yes, you are correct about the connectors. Only the main connector is 3D printed out of reinforced nylon and converts the harness to a circular shape with a strain relief lip. The EV1 connectors are from Tyco (made in the USA). The yellow cap’s purpose is simply to keep dirt and dust out of the connectors until ready to be plugged in. The other "Beta Tester" reported good results and is very happy with the performance of the engine now. Sale will start in about 3 weeks with 3 sleeving options. DR-25 "race-spec inspired" as shown by you, Green Nomex high temp sleeving for an extra slim and sleek professional look and HFT5000 for a more textured appearance than DR-25. Of course, all components used on the harness including the used TEFZEL wire have a minimum continuous temp rating of 150°C. So you can look forward to decades of trouble free operation. It is designed as a "lifetime" harness. The Price is not final yet, but expect it to match SNG price for a, as mentioned by you, a much superior and fully shielded product. I was really impressed with Andreas's concept too. One thing that needs mentioning is under that shrink wrap is TEFZEL wire!!! And if you know motorsports wire-jacketing - That is essentially Milspec / Avionics quality jacketing/wire. It won't degrade in the heat /oil like the old PVC (or whatever jacket was on the old OE wires).

    lol@12 min WHAT IS THE MAX CAMSHAFT LIFT you can put in this???? a detail. hmm the BASE circle on the camshaft will support a.500 lobe?@21.30 WHAT is shrouding the valve? The 5.3 intake ports- xke/xjs are SIZED for a 7 liter engine. aka Jaguar never downsized the ports when they reduced the cubic inches from 427 to 326.@22 min. lol and wtf too- HOW are you going to make the HE head competitive when there is NO SHORT TURN in the exhaust port? So you got 60%? or 70% of int. flow out of the HE PORT???? hmmm there is NO SHORT TURN. Why because the ex vale is sunk .300? lol IF YOU TRY TO MAKE MORE THEN 375 hp with the HE head you will break the engine. Why because the HE head has 2 FLAME FRONTS. As you make more power the combustion becomes TO0 VIOLENT- you will see for yourself. A far better deal is to put a dish- maybe zero to .060 in the xke head and a matching dish in a modern lightweight piston. but I am sure you call me a moron- lol goo luck- you will need it.

  • @markniblett4857
    @markniblett4857 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hey Bob. I'm a bit confused (again). The head from the TWR 6.1 appears to be a flat head. Are the valves any larger then a stock 5.3? Your track car is a pre HE or a HE? Pre HE's were flat heads. When I went down to Charles Servedio's he had a brand new head that had a HE style combustion camber but much deeper than the 1989 5.3 HE head I brought down to him. Appears Jaguar used a combination of heads and pistons / stroke to achieve different compression numbers on different applications.

    That would be so much fun to play around with testing a pre-HE head. I would love to know how much can be improved outside engine itself all the way from 100% bone stock. 3 inch trumpets, non-paper air filters, larger throttle body, ported intake.

    Intersting. Might you make a casting of the TWR head ports for later reference? Also I wonder what the exhaust port REVERSE flows... I .e hoping reverse flow is bad vs outgoing flow (reversion resistant). I know Ole has those high lift cams & trays... perhaps an easy off the shelf solution to raise the lift on the TWR heads? Have you potentially looked into any places in the area that might offer industrial CAT scanning which would allow one to slice a head and see wall thickness virtually?

IDK what's going on except if I switch to essentially "mono" sound - like via the monitor's inbuilt speakers, the narration comes through. Otherwise about 5 - 10 seconds comes through in just a couple sections of film. I'll keep working on it and figure it out. Intersting TWR just machined OE E type Hepolite Pistons. Will you side skirt coat those Omega pistons & give them a top thermal barrier coating? I never thought about the wrist pin being offset on the Jag Engines, but it now makes sense with a to-the-front directionality to the pistons. I'd like to know why it makes the engine smoother but less powerful. If the cylinders themselves had been offset to the outsides (instead of the wrist pins) theoretically more power could be captured from TDC (because of the rod angle offset) than directly in-line (the opposite of what you've noted happens with the wrist pin offset.) The hashtag d4a (Driving 4 answers) channel has a good short animation explaining offset cylinders. I wish we had a real extensive documented piston PN list with pictures even if many were NLA.

    I kinda ran into a similar situation. After a through spotless block and liner cleaning, and making the O.E.M. cylinder liner stud clamps , I took my block down to our local race shop. He was able to get that V-12 up into his Sunnen machine just to have the glaze removed and tidy the liners for the Std. cast rings. These were the stock 1986 Jaguar liners. Three had bad casting porosity pits at the bottom of the stroke which the rings covered. We discussed it and decided it was not acceptable but it would get buy. I was fortunate to stumble onto and buy a brand new set of O.E.M. liners off e-bay and sold my old ones getting my honing money back which basically paid for the new liners. I'm guessing after watching many of these East Indian machining videos that more than probably not is where much of this new cast iron is coming from. Down and dirty and quickly produced in the barefooted dirt floor shops with no Quality Control Inspection or in process inspection while machining. It's amazing the ground they can cover with experience and crude dirty hand made tools and a steel ruler, feeler gauges and caliper. I don't believe they maintain precision boring machines or Sunnen Hones. I have a fellow up here in Sultan, Washington Jim Flower LLC Flower Racing LLC. He does a lot of FFA air cooled boxer cylinders and Harley-Davidson work. Google and call him, excellent, excellent innovative machinist and shop owner. They will be perfect when you get them back.
