Hi Bob. Another excellent video - thanks. Though I want to - I doubt that I will ever actually take an engine to pieces - never mind attempt to rebuild it! However, watching you work on engines and discussing the challenges you face is very enjoyable. I wish I could come and be your apprentice for 6 months or so! Take care. Peter

I kinda ran into a similar situation. After a through spotless block and liner cleaning, and making the O.E.M. cylinder liner stud clamps , I took my block down to our local race shop. He was able to get that V-12 up into his Sunnen machine just to have the glaze removed and tidy the liners for the Std. cast rings. These were the stock 1986 Jaguar liners. Three had bad casting porosity pits at the bottom of the stroke which the rings covered. We discussed it and decided it was not acceptable but it would get buy. I was fortunate to stumble onto and buy a brand new set of O.E.M. liners off e-bay and sold my old ones getting my honing money back which basically paid for the new liners.
I'm guessing after watching many of these East Indian machining videos that more than probably not is where much of this new cast iron is coming from. Down and dirty and quickly produced in the barefooted dirt floor shops with no Quality Control Inspection or in process inspection while machining. It's amazing the ground they can cover with experience and crude dirty hand made tools and a steel ruler, feeler gauges and caliper. I don't believe they maintain precision boring machines or Sunnen Hones.
I have a fellow up here in Sultan, Washington Jim Flower LLC Flower Racing LLC. He does a lot of FFA air cooled boxer cylinders and Harley-Davidson work. Google and call him, excellent, excellent innovative machinist and shop owner. They will be perfect when you get them back.

Nice work Bob. I hear more and more about poor quality aftermarket parts. Sad. What is that interesting board hanging on the wall above the black Craftsman tool chest?

It's disappointing but a lesson about "assuming" *new* parts are in spec. I know other alternatives are Westwood UK (might be oversized only) and maybe FW Thornton (might be OE suppliers). I'm surprised I don't find a Melling PN too.

This could be a Mahle commercial.

I'm no machinist, but I assume after the liners have been press fit, they will have to be bored or honed with a torque plate anyway. How round are the pistons?

The liners are slip fit wet liners. With the exception of a bit of finish honing, what comes out of the box is what you get. Pistons are Hepolite. Top notch.

What is the Jag OEM tolerance on out of round and taper? I would think +1/-0 mil/thou of an inch would be acceptable.

      11:1 compression ratio

As always Bob, great work and explanation of specifications..it used to drive me nuts gathering all the parts for a rebuild, to find out the rods, pins or pistons were wrong. Then you would have to panic on which way to go,, machine shop or reorder and measure for verification, then start having bad dreams on the first start up.. lol
