Haunted and Abandoned Norfolk

Spectacular 4K drone footage of historical sites across the Norfolk & East Anglian region. Locations not always disclosed depending upon the vulnerability and remoteness of the site.
Cracked Flooring Exposes the Crypt below Norfolk Church Ruin as Grave Ledger Stones still Lay Inside
Dating back to the 14th century this hauntingly beautiful church has been abandoned for nearly a century. In 1906 the round tower crumbled and fell into the nave below. A Victorian roof was then added but the church structure was still deemed unsafe and it finally closed in 1936. The remaining furnishings were donated to a nearby church. When exploring the inside of the church grave ledger stones from the 1700s still lay on the ground near the altar and cracked flooring exposes the crypt below. The back churchyard has an abundance of overgrown gravestones which are scattered amongst the undergrowth. This church is on private land and can only be entered with permission of the home owners because the ruin sits in their back garden. Out of respect to them I won’t be sharing too many details on this occasion.

Permission visit? I sneaked under a fence to look at this one a few years ago. Thankfully no whispering females for me!! Really nice to see it in more detail - along with historical photos.
Hi Daniel - the couple who own this church were really nice and gave me permission to visit. Because it sits in their back garden I was careful not to give away too many clues of the location so they don’t have to deal with a sudden influx of visitors. Although it must be amazing to have such an enchanting church ruin in their garden it doesn’t come without its responsibilities, especially when you have people wanting to visit. Thanks for tuning in - I have since acquired a few more historical photographs of the church so may re-upload a new video at some point along with featuring a few more details of the graves
it wouldnt suprise me about the satanists , they continually rob graves for thier sick rituals happens here all the time
Hi thank-you again for tuning in all the way from Australia 🇦🇺. Ruinous churches (of which there are 100 in Norfolk) are a particular target for these types of rituals sadly.
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk here too :(
Next time please don't keep waving the camera up and down!
What clown added that awful music? Jesus. I despair. 😢😢😢.
Someone should take the time to make a record of the surviving monuments within the church. So many have been lost over the years. At the end of the day, they are a memorial to someones life, They are also important from a geneological perspective.
Hi it is really sad how many churches have been lost there are 100 church ruins in Norfolk alone. This one has survived better than most by still containing a roof. From seeing a photo in the 1970s shared on a local Facebook group the interior has remained pretty much unchanged. Credit to the couple who saved this church from demolition. Fortunately now it is recognised as a grade two listed building. I may do another video focusing more on the graves, I was being cautious not to give too many clues away of the location on this occasion. The vast majority of the fixtures and fittings here were removed in 1936 and utilised in other nearby churches. Thanks for commenting
The sound seems to me in vault says Survive
Interesting suggestion thank-you
Been there several times. It’s at Winterton on sea
The voice sounds like ‘……in below’ but that is without headphones on
Hi guys - cheers for tuning in - interesting suggestion - in another video featured on the channel when I visited Swanton Morley church - there is a blocked off crypt which you can see through a grille at ground level which lies below the church - a suggestion for the voice there was “below you”
@ can’t remember whether seen that or not but will watch anyway. Can’t beat a creepy crypt at a church ☺️
Brilliant. How do u find all these places
Hi Luke - cheers - just through lots of research and reading - I didn’t know of hardly any locations really before I began the channel - some places you can just stumble upon sometimes 🙂
stupid music.... but just let nature have it ,in the long run nature always wins.
I would like to think that could be restored to living accommodation. The cost would be huge i would imagine. The question would be what about the skeletal remains. Legally could you remove them or leave the tombstones alone. I would always think it had a presence though. 😮
Hi Edward - there is one church ruin in Norfolk which is currently being transformed into living accommodation and is privately owned. That church did have a crypt as i visited before while it was in a ruinous state. I presume those buried below would remain. It is a sad story with that particular church because it was gutted by fire back in 2004
This building could be restored, okay it would cost a bit but off what I have seen it would be feasible.
Hi Neil - considering it’s been abandoned for nearly a century the roof is holding up pretty well and has helped preserve what’s left inside - fortunately it is privately owned otherwise it would have been de-roofed many years ago
Sorry, but the so-called "musac" is appaling !!!!!! Totaly spoils the enjoyment, and I had to switch off (a shame, as the subject interests me). If you DO need to have musac, make it much softer and calm, please.
Try “ mute”, or volume down mate!
Im suprised they haven't removed the roof as they do most old church ruins.
Hi Sylvia - this is the only church ruin in Norfolk that hasn’t been de-roofed. Most abandoned churches are de-roofed as a formal act of dereliction and the materials are re-used elsewhere. This particular church has survived because it is privately owned and the Victorian style roof is still holding up quite well. This church was saved from demolition by a local couple and it has since become a grade two listed building
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk very nice! I'm happy it will be in conservation. Very very beautiful place! From Denver, Colorado here. No such majestic architecture here.
The voice is probably the ghost of one of the people buried there.
Hi - yes that would make sense
I have just watched this video, and the very loud and annoying music spoilt it for me. The terrible movement of the cameras, floating along and missing the important information on the floor stones, would have been more interesting, who they were and what their stones said, and the etching of symbols. The information of the floor and insides would have more interest, and lose the music.
Hi Karen - I realise the music wasn’t to everyone’s tastes and it’s been mentioned a few times now. I had to add a backing track on this occasion because being such a stormy day it caused problems with the natural ambience of the audio which became rather crackly. The graves I didn’t focus for too long on as I didn’t want to give away any clues to the location. But all comments are taken onboard thank-you
Try pressing “ mute”, or volume down, and just watch cinematography. Easy enough!
I agree the music is just plain annoying
Mike, try volume down, or even better, press “ mute”. No one forcing you to listen to the “ hideous “ music!
No offence intended, but how do you know this is a plague pit? Has there been any historical literal evidence produced or archaeological digs or bones surfacing? Or is this just unproven rumours and legend? It’s a hell of a size copse for the number of people that would have lived (or rather died) of the pestilence in C14th Keswick and why would the dead of Norwich be drawn three miles to just here? Also why would the survivors plonk a pit in the middle of a perfectly good farmable field when there’s a functional church with a perfectly good graveyard/field edge to expand into ? Sorry.
Also why would this church be targeted in the reformation specifically? I get the abbeys, priories etc but small churches are not typically closed. Any idea why this would focus the ire of Henry?
Hi - this was confirmed by the land owner and was a well known plague pit in its time - although less well known now. It’s still unable to be cultivated for that very reason. Not only the landowner but a private facebook group local to the specific area have said this was the case too as well as an administrator of a historical facebook group for Norwich. In terms of bones surfacing I know this was definitely the case when another plague pit was accidentally uncovered during ploughing on the North Norfolk coast so it may too have been the case here before it was then left and sectioned off by farmers down the generations. There is no need to physically section it off now as it is clearly visible where the copse of trees are located in the central field. In terms of its location there is a large plague burial site just off Cranley Gardens in North London, near Highgate tube station. It’s a sizeable distance from the centre of London and is well documented in its use. In terms of it being placed away from the church in the centre of a nearby field - this would have been an attempt to keep the infections levels down and help stop the spread. The plague pits were usually topped up with quick lime as it was believed the plague bacillus could live on for years. In terms of the reformation (when Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church) he didn’t target this church specifically but Norfolk simply had more churches than it could cope with and this particular church along with many others fell into dis-use during this time. Thank-you for your interest
The background noise is totally inappropriate. If someone had enough money, they could turn this old church into nice living accommodation.
Hi - I have mixed feelings about old churches being turned into private housing - true it does save the building but once re-developed people aren’t able to visit and document the building - this has happened to one church in Norfolk I know of which I visited in the past - it’s a tricky one
Why are people in the comments being so rude, especially about the music. Personally I quite enjoy the music with the organ in, thought it was quite nice. If you dislike the music so much turn the sound down or go make your own bloody video. Jolly good video mate. Have a nice day. 🫡👋
Thank-you for the kind words - comments wise it’s been quite a mixed bag and many weren’t impressed with the music, so it’s nice to receive nice comments to help make up for the less complimentary ones 🙂
Quite agree, if people don’t like the music just hit “ mute”, or volume down. Not rocket science!
Good steady photography. Its sad to think that in a thousand years or so, they'll be nothing but a grassey mound with a few tree's around.... thanks for posting and i liked the music and the natural sounds.
Thank-you appreciate the comments - it is sad - Norfolk has 100 church ruins (some of which are more significant than others) - I’m trying to visit the majority of these on my channel - still being roofed this particular ruin has survived better than most and is one of my favourites 🙂
Or maybe more trees!
Interesting, would have been much better with a vocal narrative rather than the supposed "music"
Thank-you for commenting - will take your comments on board and consider in future videos
I LOVE this, not crazy about the music. The music is awful, as already noted, but the volume is a bit loud. May Gregorian chant played softly? More of these videos with the commentary please!!
Hi - plenty of people have mentioned the music so I may re-upload the video at some point with just the background sounds - the problem i had on the day was it was very stormy and the microphone was picking up a lot of static noise hence why I added the music - so if I decide to re-upload I may add a different backing track and lower the sound so you still get the ambience of the surroundings in the background
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Hi I meant to say the music is "not" awful, just loud. Sorry.
So many places I need to visit this summer on my bike. I will try & visit as many as I can featured in your vids 😊
Thanks Will - there are so many historic places to explore in Norfolk - it’s a great honour that my videos have maybe inspired you to visit some of the locations featured on the channel 🙂
Great vid & fabulous location
Cheers Will appreciated 🙂
We bought a derelict, long abandoned Cambridgeshire village church in 1994 and transformed it into a family home 😊 built in 1792
Oh wow - thanks for sharing - it must be amazing to own such an historic property - it maybe seen as a silly question to some but have you experienced any spooky goings on? Also what happened to the crypt below the church (assuming there was one) and the burials in the churchyard?
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Hi there. At one time I heard an enormous crash-bang that sounded like a wrecking ball had hit the front brickwork. Also, during the renovation of the vestry floor we discovered small arches in the foundation brickwork. The original wooden chapel had later additions of a semi circular tower at one end and a great slab of brickwork at the front incorporating stairs either side up to the galleries - men one side and women the other. The half tower had the vestry below and the choir gallery and organ above, all destroyed by vandals. I think the tower addition foundation was built over existing graves and the arches were to protect graves below. We dug under one larger arch to find a single vertebra which I took to a Cambridge Anthropology lab who identified it as that of a teenager. We didn’t dig any further as the new floor was to be laid. I wrote a spooky story about the renovation and our experiences in the building which is narrated by a voice actor on the old Otis Jiry channel of spooky tales. I don’t think I’m allowed to hot-link it here but it’s still available with some searching under the title ‘My Four Lost Years’ There’s so much else to tell including the UFOs witnessed by three of us. The 10 month transition from dereliction to our structurally completed house, called Rivendell, was video’s by our builders and the finished project recorded by me with dozens of photos and video. The small graveyard was soon full early 1792 onwards and some bodies were tucked under the church foundations including a baby with a miniature gravestone. The gravestones were removed in the 1960s we were told by a local, and most broken up by sledgehammer. Those remaining were propped up against the perimeter wall. The eighty or so bodies remain. It was called the United Reformed Church, renamed Rivendell after our love of The Lord of the Rings. We remained there for seven years but things didn’t go well with my illness and divorce ☹️ Thanks for your interest and I hope you like my narrated story. Are you in the UK?
Imagine how good this video could have been without the awful, inappropriately chosen music. Instead is practically intolerable. Imagine also, how good it could be if telling the stories of its people and more of its actual history instead of focusing on the infantile 'spooky' stuff. No, I didn't hear a whisper in the crypt. Why not talk about it as you're there? What a devastatingly wasted opportunity.
Hate to be pedantic, but try pressing the “ mute” button; you may not be so devastated!
Please get yourself checked out by the Dr. It seems you have a severe case of exaggeritis.
@@Salutimondo Better than a slight case of stupidity.

Haha Halloween on a full moon would be interesting 😅
It must have been a very beautiful church is that a private family 😍 it'd be nice to see the gravestones in the in the spring to see how far they how old they go back
Hi Joanne - the church is owned by a couple who were kind enough to allow me access as it sits in their back garden. They saved it from demolition some years ago and now it is a grade two listed building. The grave ledger stones in the church date way back to the 1700s - I didn’t focus too much on the burials because I didn’t want to give away clues of its location out of respect to the owners who were kind enough to let me visit
Love the video and story, please the music spoils the video.
Cheers Paul - there’s been a few people mentioning the music - I don’t always add a backing track and try not to where possible but because it was such a stormy day the microphone was picking up a lot of static noise so felt some music was needed over the top but I appreciate the music wasn’t to everyone’s taste - the music doesn’t last throughout the entire video though
A beautiful place
Cheers David - it is a stunning ruin and was even more magical in the snow 🙂
This is so sad to see. I visited in 2020 and always wondered if it was still standing. I’m gutted to see it’s been a target of arson. Thanks for the update. Wish people would leave these pieces of history alone. It boils my blood😢
Hi - I agree it’s really terrible what has happened to this iconic building - the old morgue building behind the asylum still survives though at least
If churches are falling... the civilisation has fallen.
It is concerning and does make you wonder about the future of our churches that are left as congregations continue to fall
The photography is very good, as a all videos, yet for some reason people moaning about the music, in a very negative way.Just mute/ volume down, and appreciate the lovely cinematic shots. The only minor criticism is slow down a bit , and closer look at old graves. Apart from that really nice work mate.
Thanks Pete 🙂 - normally I would focus in longer on the graves but I didn’t want to give too much information away in terms of the location - fair comment about slowing down a few people have said the same - thanks again for the compliments
Someone help me.
Hi Sheila - is this what you believe is being whispered by the female spirit? Interesting suggestion
What a beautiful church. Even for it being in the shape it's in. I can only imagine the beauty it once was. The love of FATHER GOD IS STILL ALIVE..❤❤❤
Hi Sheila 🙂 - despite the church ruin being in a ruinous state it is still an enchanting place to visit
anywhere else in the world, this ancient building would be cherished. criminal. 😢
This church has been abandoned for nearly a century now but it is holding up quite well - the roof has really helped keep the weather out although there are a few holes appearing now. This is the only church ruin in Norfolk to still contain its roof which makes it very unique. The current owners saved this church from demolition and it has since become a grade two listed building - they are trying their best to preserve what is left and internally it has remained pretty much unchanged over the past 50 years or so
Well, not in the US. It would have been turned into a McDonalds.
That sounds good, but of course is complete nonsense. The world has changed enormously since this church was built and one of the reasons is there is always change. Much is demolished to make way for the new or left to rot when it no longer serves its purpose. That's the norm and when something survives, they are the lucky ones. I'm sixty this year. The house I started my life in is gone and so is the whole street.
Still a building of substance, surprised it's not been re engaged as a house ? I thought extant graveyards, proving a point of belief in what they all were doing there in the first place, we're consecrated grounds anyway ???
Hi Suzy - the structure and roof is holding up quite well considering how long it’s been abandoned. I’ve mixed feelings about churches being turned into private houses - this happened to one church ruin in Norfolk and now it’s completely inaccessible which does make sense for those living there but it does prevent anyone else from ever visiting again - some of the church ruins in Norfolk are still magical places to visit 🙂
The stupid music well noise is making this video pretty boring, had to turn volume off to watch it. Such a shame.
Not very constructive criticism mate: “ stupid music”, just say better without music, or what music may go well with video!
I need to go back . Last 3 times I knocked no one answered 😢
Hi Ben thanks for tuning in - oh no that’s a shame - I know you’ve visited before - it’s definitely one of my favourite church ruins in Norfolk 🙂
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk yess I wanted to make a remake of it , gonna have to try again in the summer :)
Great footage, and the drone from an angle most of us, including a local, wouldn't have had the pleasure of without this fab vid. I visited here a few years ago on my bike, for the first time. I was inexplicably drawn to the back of the church. Not by the lovely view, but by this tiny window I didn'teven know was there.... I hope that demon thing wasnt summoning me 😮
Hi - thanks so much for the kind words - the approach to this church across the valley was perfect for the drone especially with the menacing dark clouds building up behind the church - it did look very atmospheric - hopefully i did the church justice - the war graves were very interesting too
Great photos and video, just found your channel. I am sad it’s so much of a ruin but very attractive as an urban explore. At least you have captured it before we lose it. Thank you
Thank-you - there are 100 church ruins in Norfolk and this is one of my favourites - I’m trying to visit the majority of them on my channel. Somerton St Mary is another enchanting ruin in Norfolk which I visited in the snow which you may enjoy too 🙂
So beautiful- we don't have these churches in Canada. The crypt brickwork looks quite recent. Added at a later date?
Hi Laurel - it is remarkable how far British churches go back and the architecture which has survived so long is testament to the master craftsmen of our past. I think the burial chambers below the church were certainly there from the 1700s onwards as the ledger stones in the church of burials seem to start from the 18th century
Music destoryed video
I loved the music! Fantastic drone work. Brilliant stuff but please be careful! As in dont get a precarious tile falling on yer noggin!
Thanks very much - comments for the music have been quite mixed so always nice to receive a message from someone who enjoyed it. I don’t anyways use music in my videos but when I do it’s not always easy trying to pick an appropriate backing track. I’ll be sure to be careful thanks 😅
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk No worries. I do get that it is a mixed bag. My personal opinion is that you go with what feels right for you because only you knew what it was like to take the footage.
I enjoyed watching this video, visiting this old abandoned church from my armchair. To offer some constructive criticism, as some people have objected to the music, maybe vary the music with some different moods. but keep a bit of the dramatic too.
Thank-you will take the comments on board 🙂
I know where this is having visited it last summer- there is a tombs with the lid ajar like someone had obviously moved it on purpose- I don't know much about burials etc but I assume they're still buried underground and not above ground in the actual tomb? There's also a much more modern but abandoned (as of last year) chapel and graveyard near aylsham that could be a good visit. Did you find any bones or anything when you went into the crypt? 😮
Hi - the exposed burial chambers beneath the church floor were full of leaves so there wasn’t anything distinguishable. During the video footage below the church floor you can see the edge of a casket (09:34) shortly followed by an orb moving downwards (09:35). Apparently in the past a lady visitor claims she found vertebrae laid out on the church floor though which was presumably from the chambers below. The disturbed tomb memorial in the graveyard you mention is featured towards the end of the video. As you say the actual burials would be beneath this not inside. Interesting - what was the chapel called? Is it the Burgh-next-Aylsham Primitive Methodist chapel?
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk not that one, it's just before red lion st. Past the old police station that is now houses
I think I’ve located it - without giving too much away is it located on White Hart Street? Looks like an interesting place 🙂
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk yeah that's the one
In response to your earlier question I’ve updated my reply but incase you aren’t notified again I’ll include another reply here - during the video footage below the church floor you can see what looks like the edge of a casket (09:34) shortly followed by an orb moving downwards (09:35)
The voice sounds like it's saying "That's enough!"
Hi Andrew - interesting suggestion - I’ll add to the list of others - thanks for commenting
