Poppies Great Massingham - field left to nature after rewilding project results in vivid sea of red!

- The village of Great Massingham lies in the heart of the west Norfolk countryside. Nestled within the meadow lies one of the most dramatic sights in East Anglia. A mesmerising field of red poppies. The poppy is a very recognisable bright wildflower with its colour symbolising remembrance from the World War. Due to modern day farming techniques and herbicide spray the wildflower is now usually only found on rough ground, hedgerows and in gardens. Although mass flowering events are now rare, occasionally a field is left to rest for a year, which can enliven our countryside with colour. This particular field was rewilded by the landowner enabling these vivid flowers to flourish. The soil was ploughed and harrowed before being left for nature to run its course. The result is an incredible ocean of scarlet. Writer Clement Scott first coined the phrase Poppyland for the coastline between Cromer and Overstrand. In the 1880s he wrote “neath the blue of the sky, in the green of the corn, it is here that the regal red poppies are born!”
