- A snowy trip to the reputedly haunted ruins of St Mary's Church in Tivetshall. Part of the structure pre-dates 1086 and along with neighbouring St Margaret’s was one of two village churches to be recorded in the Domesday Book. In 1702 it was recorded that the St Mary’s Church had fallen into great decay and was in danger of falling to the ground. The maintenance of two village churches in the Tivetshalls was proving too costly. By the 1800s St Mary’s had deteriorated further with nature beginning to sprout through the stone flooring. Any remaining congregation moved to Tivetshall St Margaret by the 19th century. In 1947 St Mary’s tower collapsed into the nave when the vibration from a low-flying aircraft climbed to clear the woods to the rear of the church. This was recorded in eye-witness accounts from Mr George Humphries and Mr Jack Self, both of Rectory Road Tivetshall. The War Damage Commission refused to make any payment for damage arising from this event. The church ruins are rumoured to be haunted with up to five spirits believed to make their presence known here. One such spirit is said to be of a pedestrian who was killed in a car accident here in the 1950s. A car knocked over a man when turning a sharp corner by the church in a fatal collision. The ghost of a man in an old fashioned suit and a trilby hat has since been witnessed here. It is believed this is the spirit of the pedestrian who lost his life in the incident. Another spirit reputedly witnessed here is said to be an ex-priest who is seen as a guardian of the church.

What a beautiful place and well shot . Unfortunately four and a half hours away from me. Thanks for posting.
Cheers Michael - shame it would be quite a drive for you but worth a trip if you are ever over this way 🙂
Love this place & its serenity & regularly drop in for a sit down and a cuppa out of my flask when I'm cycling up in Norfolk.
Used an EMF meter at the top right near the window & got a very strong reading which I found interesting.
Cheers for sharing Will - seems to be a very active location from the stories I’ve heard - I’ve visited here a few times now - always interesting 🙂
Excellent video, thank you always 👍🏻
Thank-you 🙂
Awesome video! Just came across your channel. Really interesting and well shot. Thanks for sharing.
Thank-you very much for commenting. I’ve visited this particular church ruin a few times and it always draws me back. Atmospheric place and seldom visited it seems - always have the site to myself whenever I visit 🙂
Iam not getting alerts anymore to this excellent forum - just happened to see this on TH-cam this afternoon !
Hi Peter - I try to upload a new video every Friday (where possible) so you probably have a good few videos to catch up on - sorry you didn’t get the alerts - please continue to stay tuned to the channel - really appreciate your support and kind words 🙂
We conducted an evening investigation there a few years ago. It was really interesting and we recorded some interesting events.
It does seem a very active place from the various investigations I’ve seen different groups conduct here 🙂
Interesting place, it's sad that it became a ruin
Always an interesting place to visit - lots of folklore and ghost stories here - thanks for commenting 🙂
Stunning
Thanks Marie 🙂
Thank you for yet another excellent video. I am sure, like me, other viewers would be interested to learn how long each video takes to make, how you make them and chose the location.
Hi Michele - thanks for your interest - depending upon the video it can take one to two weeks to finalise the edit after one or two days of filming - I use a variety of different media to try and capture each location - the drone has been a good addition to help with this - I do a lot of research in my spare time to try and find new places - I feel the less well known ones are sometimes the most popular - on occasions I find places on route to other locations which is always a bonus - I have lots of locations which I have already visited backed up which I haven’t begun editing yet so watch this space - thanks for your support 🙂
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Thank you for your reply. I thought they would take months. Well, every minute you spend is greatly appreciated by so many.
Happy New Year!
Thanks so much. Sometimes editing the longer videos can take months if I’m working on multiple projects at the same time. Kind words such as these make all my efforts feel worthwhile so thank-you. Best wishes to you for the new year 🙂
I thought I had a paranormal experience here recently, good to know others have too as maybe that means I wasn’t imagining it!
Hi thanks for commenting. I’d be interested to know what your experience was? I have since been contacted by someone local to the area who are convinced they saw the man with the suit and trilby hat. This spirit many believe to be the pedestrian who sadly lost his life after a collision with a car on the corner of the road in the 1950s
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk I didn’t actually see anything, I felt a tug on something I was holding… I was on the outside of the church by the road. I was looking at the memento mori on the gravestones when it happened.
Thank-you for sharing - that is very interesting. If there are no rational explanations it could indicate an interactive spirit who was very much aware of your presence and may have been trying to get your attention. You definitely aren’t alone in your experiences here that’s for sure
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk well there wasn’t really a breeze that day plus it’s sheltered my the trees, at the time I did wonder if it was the motion of me moving my head so I moved it again but it didn’t happen. It definitely felt like a tug or push I felt it in my hand.
How strange - thanks again for sharing
Re-thatched between the two World Wars, the tower collapsed onto the nave following the vibration from a passing aircraft in 1949! This latter incident made the decision for the PCC.
In 1978 the roof was removed; the remains were eventually consolidated in 1995 by NCC’s Historic Buildings Programme ! I think the graveyard is still used.
Hi Peter - thanks for the info - the graveyard still has some quite recent burials as well as some really old graves dating to the 17th century - amazing place - those local to the area are really fond of this place and keep a close eye on it 🙂
👍🏻
There is the grave of Maria Brown with her husband John, Maria was murdered by her son in law Elijah Snelling jan 8th or 9th 1890. Elijah was my 3x great grandfather, he's buried in an unmarked grave, in unconsecrated grounds in redenhall.
Thank-you for commenting - I’ve never heard this sad story before - so much history to this church - much of which most will never know
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk I found out by doing my family tree, it was an open secret, found his wife jane & 2 of 3 children (john & alice) who are all buried in dickleburgh. The youngest child ada was born after he went to prison, he was sentenced to death but got life. Died in harleston in January 1929. Took a long time to find what could be his grave.
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk elijah murdered maria in seamere road (I think) in pulham St mary
When did it snow here (
A light snow flurry early last year 🙂
