Western Meadowlark Song (No Narration, Just Meadowlark!)
Enjoy the sweet song of the western meadowlark doing territory calls with another meadowlark nearby. I was so delighted to be able to capture this meadowlark singing on a cold morning in early May. I hope it brings a smile to your heart as it did to mine. The song of meadowlarks is just wonderful.
Special thanks to our background vocalists:
-Western meadowlark
-Canada goose
-Red-winged blackbird
-Common grackle
-Mourning dove
-Black-tailed prairie dog

What makes corvids and parrots so intelligent?
มุมมอง 984วันที่ผ่านมา
Corvids and parrots are known for being the smartest of avian species. But what makes them so intelligent? The insult of "bird brain" should be eliminated, as birds- corvids and parrots in this case- are capable of problem solving, strategizing, mimicry, and association. Just take a look into the eyes of these birds and it's clear there's a lot going on in their heads. Related books on Avian in...
How do birds find worms?
มุมมอง 43K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
How do birds like the American robin, killdeer and European starling find worms? What senses do they use, and how are they able to pull a worm out in one attempt? I discuss some of the research and some of my own observations on American robins and killdeer. Sometimes when presenting research in a video, the answer is that we don't quite know why or how. Do birds use echolocation?

We know that birds have highly advanced vision. Whether it's an eagle spotting prey from a great distance, or a nightjar snatching up insects at night. We think of birds as having excellent vision and hearing. Up until recently, it was believed that birds had poor olfactory capabilities. What you call worm charming is a technique also referred to as worm fiddling or fiddling for worms. The rubbing a flat implement across a stake is rather like moving a bow across violin strings. I don’t know of any birds that fiddle for worms, though. I’ve seen birds pull worms from the ground, but I simply don’t know how the birds located the worms.

Common grackles have been nesting in the dense top of my arborvitae for many years. I witnessed a squabble for nesting rites early this Spring. Though the nest is fully concealed, I know the eggs have hatched when I see adults removing white fecal sacs from the nest. There should be fledglings in a couple of weeks.

Super cool! Have not seen them myself but they occasionally show up here in Chicago on migration. They're super beautiful. I know prey size differential is one theory for reverse sexual dimorphism in raptors, especially those like peregrines who focus on other birds almost exclusively. This with the beaks sort of sounds vaguely similar, enabling the different sexes to focus a bit more on different prey types. Fascinating!
