This makes me think of wood ducks. They may not be as good at hiding as Virginia rails, but they're super shy and will take off from the water and fly away at the slightest hint of anyone (or thing) approaching. As they fly away they make a distinctive "scree, scree" call. Whenever I hear that call and see a bird _waaay_ off in the distance flying away, I think "doggone it, I missed getting a good look at a wood duck again!" The males of these birds have some of the most beautiful plumage of any American bird -- but they never let anyone get close enough to see it!

Before you mentioned Soras, I was going to say that both Virginia Rail and Soras are a real challenge to photograph. I have managed a few pictures of both but none that are great.

I was able to see a Clapper Rail skulk by me in a marshy wetland about two years ago. I was able to view it for about thirty seconds before it disappeared into the tall grass. It was an incredible experience.

The size of a European Starling that's small 😊. With nice colors too but with long feet 😉.
