Herons eating fish…. . . . . Years ago, my late wife was fishing in Rice Lake, easterly of Toronto. A favorite spot was about 3 miles out, on the edge of an island. If the fish were about, a heron took up station. “Harriet the Heron” and Debbie had a partnership. Harriet’s presence announced that “they’re biting here!”. Debbie gave all smaller fish that had swallowed the hook a toss over to Station Harriet, where they were summarily swallowed. The partnership would work very well - for a few hours. Then, her tummy was on the FULL mark, Harriet didn’t gulp them down. Like a kid, messing around with an unfavorite food, Harriet just nuzzled the floating fish, like pushing green beans around on her plate. Sometimes, she picked up the fish, stared around, up at the sky, etc, and dropped the fish. She was full to the gullet. Soon, she was ready to leave. But taking off had gotten difficult. She now weighed a large percentage more than just a few hours earlier. Instead of running only a few steps across the water while flapping her wings, she had to flap a lot harder and faster, and run a long ways to get up to lift off speed. Sometimes, she would lift off, then settle right back down to the water. In aeronautical terms, she was over maximum gross weight. She gave Debbie a scowl, and tried again. Though always successful in flight in eventuality, she might not return for a couple days. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
