How to Convert Hand Knitting Patterns to Knitting Machines Part 5
In this short series, I am going to show you how to convert hand knitting patterns - of anything, with any weight of yarn - to any gauge or style of knitting machine, through the use of a simple spreadsheet and some basic maths.
The advantage of knowing how to do it yourself over using online calculators is that you can adapt any pattern of any garment to any machine and any yarn. It's a skill which is well worth learning, especially if you are starting to find the 1990s machine knitting patterns a bit dated!
You can find the spreadsheet I am creating here:

Very excited for this series
I’ll have a go and let you know how I get on, thank you for a great tutorial.
Please feel free to ask for any help or get me to look it over... Good luck and I'd love to see the results!
@ thank you, will do
Already started my own sheet 😁thank you !
Great! Did you see you can poach my sheet and adapt it to your needs? Link in the description.
@singlentendre yes 😉👍 thank you. now I need to make a swatch and try it out 😁
many thanks for these vids ♥
My pleasure!
I hope you're thinking of making a pattern book 😉
Good lord, no! Technical knowledge I may have, but I have the same sense of style as a meth-crazed raccoon in a charity shop.
I have just dropped aome stitches at the side and didnt notice bit worried.
Ok, you are probably best either to unpick back to the dropped stitches or start again. If they aren't too bad, you could use a bit of yarn to weave them back in and just ignore it...
@singlentendre it looked like it was on the side but when i picked up the last one it was actually the next two so i was able to ladder them up with a latch tool. Thank god i had counted my needles exactly!
Woohoo 🎉 thank you, I’m looking forward to putting this into practice, but will wait until part 5.
Coming soon!
Thank you, this is very useful
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. Is there a way of adjusting a machine knit pattern to a larger size? I've asked in lots of groups and they just say "add more stitches/rows" but how do you know how many to add and how do you calculate the neckline/sleeves/shoulders 🤷🏻♂️. Thanking you.
Yes! I'll cover that in parts 4 and 5.
Thanks for sharing these informations. Very helpfull 😊
Inm looking forward for the next video 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic! Thanks for all your hard work and being generous enough to share your work! Love your clear and inclusive videos.
My pleasure!
Okay, this is wonderful, thank you! I have been using ChatGPT to help me convert patterns (because, as you mentioned, I do have Dyscalculia. Thank you for thinking of us!) but you have to be super careful with it (especially if you are not a hand knitter) because ChatGPT makes really big mistakes (not in only in calculating, but in thinking hahaha.) I am thinking going back to the basics is a good idea, so I have my own handle on the calculations without too much ChatGPT. Looking forward to both videos!
I have spotted 5 mistakes in this, by the way, which I will fix in the next video. Anyone want to tell me what they are?
many thanks, looking forward to the follow up video, cheers
All done now!
Wonderful! Thank you! ❤
Glad you liked it!
No link to the Google sheet?
Whoops! Sorry... One incoming...
This is great, thank you for sharing - looking forward to trying this.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@singlentendrejust started to copy this into excel, all going well so far 👍
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
動画をありがとうございます。 私が手に入れた古いKH-585のボタンが一部正しく動かなかったので、この動画を参考に内部を確認してみようと思います。
Appreciate the videos. Is there a trouble-shooting website to help with this machine? I was given one by someone whose mother use it years ago, and I don't think the needles are opening with movement of the carriage. (Hate opening all of the needles for each row).
The needles are opened by brushes on the carriage. If the brushes are still there and working, then the needles almost certainly need to be stripped out and soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
@ thanks! I realized I needed to push down the carriage knobs. Learning every day!
Hi I have my mums machine but when I try to cast on the stitches keep coming of and wondered if I’ve set it up wrong. Would really appreciate your advise please.
It's difficult to diagnose without seeing it, but I would first suggest checking the sponge bar - about 90% of the time that's the reason for casting on issues.
Great information, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
this video was amazing, i had no idea how push button machines worked and they’re super interesting!!!!
Glad you liked it!!
Thank you for these videos! Very precious since I’m a skilled hand-knitter but knitting machine beginner 😊 I have a question: I have the same machine Brother 588. Is it only a one bed or there is a possibility to ad also second bed for ribbing and if so which type should I search? And, honestly, does it worth? Thank you thank you ❤
Yes, you can. They are rare, but can occasionally be found. You are looking for the KR-585 in all probability. Do they add much? That depends on what you want. If you are only going to use it for ribbing, probably not really. But it opens up many more stitch patterns like Fisherman's Rib and racking patterns, as well as circular knitting for socks etc., so if you are adventurous, or really into tactile fabric patterns then yes, absolutely it is worth it.
@ thank you so much!
I have an HK-160 - the MK70’s not-foldable sister. I have trouble finding new needles for it. Can you point me to at seller? My local knitting machine shop does not have them, nor do they know where to find any. This was actually my first knitting machine, that I found only a month or two ago. It was looking lonely and abandoned in second hand store, right around the corner. I got it for a steal (100kr~11£) and it works really well (after I have cleaned it and fixed it). Is the HK160 rare as well?
Yes pretty rare, but sadly not valuable. I don't know about needles; I would try Google first though.
@ I don’t intend to sell it, so the monetary value doesn’t really matter to me. Not much luck with google for needles, unfortunately. Only one weird seller from China. Well, I’ll just have to keep eyes and ears open for replacement needles.
How did you know that this crossover is just perfect, I love KM and Narrowboats, thank you for sharing
You're welcome 😊
i have a knitting machine like that, and it's called speed knitter, it looks like that, but i don't know how to put the yarn pole, can yung help me?
Thank you so much for this introduction / cast-on tutorial. I have been trying out my machine (basically the same but here in Germany mine is a Knittax M2) and have really been struggling with the only cast-on method I had seen others exlain (basically an e-wrap cast on, but the ribbing needles get cast on clockwise) So finicky and frustrating. I knew there must be an easier way. So thanks so much for this!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, I enjoyed the tour. As a fellow ND and former off grid person (circumstances beyond my contol) it was lovely to see the familiar everyday things like the burner fan and charge controller that are not necessary for house living. I love the honesty of showing as is rather than fake show-home neat and tidy 😊
Hello brother i urgently need your help. I dropped my knitting machine carriage on the floor and now it won't work I tried reaching out to many youtuber but it was of no use. Please respond
Well the first thing to do is to tell me what model it is, and then I can help point you towards a service manual which should help
Hi Charlie, great you're back! Are you planning to do any mobile machine servicing? I have a 950i , just plugged in and billowing smoke!
Not really I'm afraid. Billowing smoke suggests, if you are lucky, a new capacitor, and if you are not, a dead machine. Sorry to be gloomy...
@@singlentendre Thank you foe your reply Charlie. Have ordered new capacitor- if this isn't the problem and I have a dead machine, anything else i can do?
Good day - what is the make / model of this machine?
Goodday.... can you please tell me any information about that specific machine you using... I'm looking for the manual. But I need the name and module of the empisal...
I love how much knowledge you have of all the machines and their capabilities
I have owned many machines over the years, including punchcard and electronic machines. I just bought a "brand new" Brother KH 588" (unopened) push button machine and I am waiting to replace the sponge bar before starting to use it. I agree with you that the more sophisticated and automatic the machine, the less fun it is to use and so I am keen to get going on the more hands-on 588. I think I understand the principles on which the patterning features work but I do find the patterning diagrams in the manual quite confusing and hard t understand. I was wondering if you might be willing to walk us though how to read one these charts (if you know). Thanks for all the great tutorials. I have a friend living on a narrow boat on the Lancaster canal and stay with her quite often. Wonderful!
I will do a "charts" video just for you soon in the new year!
I was fortunate enough to buy a 588 in a charity shop for £20 a few years ago. I do find it a tad confusing though, so your videos are very helpful. I also have a KH 230 bulky with ribber & I tend to use that one mostly. But the 588 knits much smoother & the stitches are neater 👍
Hi Charlie. I just received a KH-587 that has never been used. When I took apart the carriage to check it out, I noticed 2 x 1mm springs that had broken. The spring metal is hair-thin, so I guess 60 years of atmosphere must have corroded the metal. Maybe it was stored near the coast. The springs help flip/pull the MC cams when the MC knob is turned. Do you know where I can get replacement springs? This video and your video about push-button machine advantages are awesome. I hope you can do more!
Sadly you can no longer get parts for these models, however I do know that the carriages for all the 587/8 models are functionally the same, and also Brother had a serious tendency to reuse small parts, so any old scrap punchcard carriage is likely to have springs that can be modified to fit!
Brilliant news!
Hey, that's my machine! Brother KH-588 with the ribber. Glad to see it getting some love 😄
What’s the best way to contact you? I’d love to take up the offer of a machine to renovate and experiment with, assuming it is still available?
Yes it certainly is! I'm in Milton Keynes - how does that work with where you are?
@ I’m based near Liverpool. A bit of a trek for sure. I’m definitely interested, need to sleep on it.
I occasionally visit my Mum near Ripon - does that help?
@ possibly! I could meet you en-route. I also have family not too far from York so they might be able to pick up on my behalf.
@janish7784 can you check your email please? Thanks!
Thank you for making this video, it’s very helpful 👍🏻
Very interesting and useful! Thank you. Just missed out on a PC machine on eBay. Now I’m thinking starting with a push button is the better way to go anyway. Just starting my machine knitting journey and I’m loving your videos.
Well, do be aware that nearly all the posh toys like ribbers and transfer carriages are only available for punchcard machines; that said, a standalone pushbutton machine is a very good and inexpensive way to start out until you know if you like it or not, and they remain portable, lighter and more fun to use!
Thank you Charlie this is so simplifying how to do these things, the manuals do make these things complicated.
Thank you for this video, I can see exactly where I’ve gone wrong reinstating this card reader and will be putting it right at the weekend while watching your video again. One other problem I have is screws, according to the manual they refer to the screws as 3.18, what does that mean as my screws are getting impossible to use please?
I don't know what the reference to 3.18 is, but I can tell you that the screws used are common between most Japanese machines, and also common across most of the whole machine, so if you have stripped or mashed the head of a screw you can nick one from elsewhere and use that
Thanks for making this video. :-). Fascinating to see the mechanical engineering involved!
I'd correct your disclaimer to "don't take a card reader that works off" or "don't take it apart unless you are willing to make it irreparable" The whole "don't take it apart unless you know what you are doing" prevents the next generation from learning and so the ability to maintain will die with our generation.
I stand by my comment! There's plenty of literature out there if you wish to learn what you are doing - the service manuals, for example, are readily available for free on t'internet. The next generation are probably fine...
@singlentendre even with literature, there is no replacement for actual experience. How do you take the first one apart if you can't take it apart if you haven't the experience necessary to put it back together again. My mother always says "knowing how to do something and being able to do something are two completely different things" I know how to build a nuclear reactor but could I do it?
Indeed. But the fact remains that I don't - and can't - recommend taking a card reader apart unless you know what you're doing. To do so is the quickest way to turn a working machine into a pile of bits, and there are few enough of these around as there are. Maybe what I would suggest to anyone who asked is to buy an already-broken one for playing with. That's how I learned how to fix cars...
@singlentendre I did say "don't take off a card reader that works" There's the old saying "don't fix wot ain't broke"
A tip. IPA does do the job. But how it does it is by thinning the grease. If you miss some when cleaning it out, as the IPA evaporates, the grease will harden up again. If you instead use a hydrocarbon based cleaner like brake clean or something recommended to me on fb, napier gun cleaner, that actually dissolves the grease and you can easily just rinse it off.
Yes absolutely, that is true, but I work on and in a narrowboat, and the fumes from the hydrocarbons in brake cleaner are not nice! I use brake cleaner (or - top tip - Bradex Easy Start, which is cheaper) for the really difficult stuff.
How much grease are you putting on? Just a smear on moving parts? Is it a particular type of grease?
Just a smear of any grease apart from lithium. Spray grease is an easy alternative.
Facinating
But before then dobby looms right?
Yes, although that's a different mechanism because it doesn't store the data in any way apart from the physical storage. No transitory data stored.
