Ohashi, or お箸 in Japanese, means "Chopsticks." My wife is Japanese, and I enjoy chopping sticks in the woods!
In 2022, we purchased a few acres of remote property in South Central Alaska. One thing led to another and we purchased the adjoining lot with a tiny cedar log cabin later that year.
This channel serves as a video journal for our trips up to the cabin allowing our extended family, friends, and TH-cam community to share in the adventure.
Who knows, maybe we will make future videos about camping in Japan, hiking, canoeing, fishing, building, or anything else outdoors!

A Rainy Day at the Off Grid Cabin in Remote Alaska: Digging, Working Outdoors, and Enjoying a Fire

This day was a particularly rainy one in at our tiny cabin in a remote region of Alaska. Despite the rain, I just about finish digging out the eastern half of the cabin. Unbelievable hell I could’ve built the whole damn dog by now clamps and brackets in the leveling all the tape measure and all that shit for a couple of corner brackets you were definitely a city man I think you better go back to Anchorage really belong
Thank you for watching!
You definitely belong in the city all them clamps, whistles and bells for a lousy corner bracket and a few balls really holy shit. No wonder you never get nothing done. I think you better stay in Anchorage where you belong
Thank you for watching!
I caught a very large rainbow trout on a 3" piece of orange yarn tied to the curve of the hook. That was the only time I ever fished the Kenai River.
Great catch! I've seen other people do similar things on Alaska's rivers. I'll have to give it a try when we're living permanently in the state sometime!
Drone footage was really nice!!! Sad to see this coming to an end but I know there will be more! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you! The last video from this trip posts Thanksgiving day. Thank you for following along on all the videos! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family😁
Definately a nice little home. Home sweet home. ❤
Yes, indeed! I'm very happy with how our little piece of paradise is turning out😊
My only worry would be if there was a medical emergency. What would you do?
that's a valid concern. I have a neighbor who lives out there full-time. I also have a decent first aid kit in the cabin, and could always make an emergency call for an air medevac. Thank you for watching!
You can use a sawzall with a long blade to cut up the ground carpet. It makes it easier to remove the roots.
That's a great idea! I'll have to get a sawzall out there first 😅 its a handy tool to have though. Thank you for watching!
I have also been following Shaun, in Ontario. He is in the process of building his cabin. Have you seen his videos? Love these videos. You and Shaun have great areas to be in. So comfortable. , stress free. This is the way to live for sure. I have just subscribed. ❤
Thank you for choosing to subscribe! I have not seen Shaun in Ontario, but will check him out! My family and I are excited to visit the cabin much more in the future.
Love this, so cool. ❤
Thank you! We appreciate you watching and commenting 😊
I would prep a cabin site pad away from the springs. Then I would dismantle and move the cabin to the new pad. That way you can fix the foundation problems, properly insulate and critter proof the floor, walls, and roof, and any other problems you might find. It would also allow you to develop the spring for use.
Great idea! If only I had the time 🤣 that is a possible long term solution I will consider in the future. Until then, I'm just trying to fix the pilings where the cabin sits. After retirement, hopefully we can do something more permanent! Thank you for sharing your ideas and for watching!
Pike are predators...a faster retrieve will produce more fish. Red devil spoons work very well for pike.
Good to know, thank you for the feedback! I'll give it a try next trip 😁 Thank you for watching!
Question - Why do you burn so much wood on your open fire, instead of stockpiling it for the winter? Just wondering ... I really enjoy your channel and your cabin projects.
A fair question! I have no place to store lots of wood, and most of the wood I burn is beetle killed spruce that is near rotten. I also love having big, warm outdoor fires! Thank you for watching!
I noticed that you having some foundation issues. Have you thought about digging a swale , shallow ditch about 6 inches to a foot deep and 3 foot wide around the backside of the cabin, so the drainage runs into there and then around the cabin instead of alongside the cabin? It’s a good way to divert the water away from foundations. I like your place. I am currently building one in the upper Peninsula of Michigan.
You noticed correctly! My short term plan is to fix the pilings as best as we can. The mid term plan is to do some sort of french drainage system on the uphill side of the cabin, similar to your swale drainage idea. Ultimately, moving the cabin to a new spot is the best course of action. I won't be able to take that much time off work for many years though! That's the long term plan 😅 Thank you for sharing your ideas and for watching!
@ no problem. I was a contractor for years. I had a backhoe and built, swells, drainage, ditches, and French drains for people that had water issues around their foundations. You have a nice location there. I also have a TH-cam channel and I like watching other people who are like-minded working on their places and building their dreams. Best of luck with your place.
@@safarijoesadventures It sounds like you have a whole lot more experience than I do! I just subscribed to your channel and am excited to watch some of your videos later today! Best wishes to you and your family, and Happy Thanksgiving!
@@OhashiOutdoors thank you you have a blessed Thanksgiving also.
Might have missed on videos what is your job in Japan?
I'm in the service, so my job changes slightly every few years. I'm currently part of a security company in an outlying city of Tokyo. Thank you for watching!😁
Awesome drone footage again and yet another great idea on your dock. I've always liked how you "time stamp" your videos and the weather conditions is a great touch!! That's a good looking draw knife and sharp too!! It was hard to tell but was that a pair of Trumpeter Swans? I love how your place is tucked back in a bit and is such a neat place - thank you again for sharing all your adventures and wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you! The dock has been a great learning experience. I'm sure it will teach us a whole lot more about dock building, and how mother nature treats her fresh water floating structures over the years. Yes, there are a few pairs of trumpeter swans that call this lake and surrounding lakes home for the summer. They are massive birds! I love watching them. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! We always appreciate you watching and commenting 😀
@@OhashiOutdoors That is so cool and I've never seen trumpeter swans in person but that is so neat that they are out your front door.
👍❤
Thank you for watching! 😄

Thank you so much! 😀
I am impressed by the precise way you handle all your tools and keep your cabin and worksite organized, while you're doing a project. A joy to watch you develop your cabin and lakefront property.
Thank you much! I do my best to stay tidy and organized. It makes life more enjoyable and much easier; especially in a small cabin like this. Thank you for watching!
My first time watching your channel. Great video of your projects and living the cabin life. Loved the evening dinner, too!
Thank you, we're happy you found our channel! Thank you for watching 😁
Three in one oil was a standard in our house, there’s was a can in the drawer of my Mom,s sewing machine.
It's a great product! I have a small bottle with me here in Japan, and a small bottle up in Alaska. A few drops go a long ways and keep your tools in good repair! Thank you for watching!😁
How much did you pay for your cabin and land? I am very interested in buying a remote cabin in Alaska.
About 50K for two separate parcels with different owners. We have been saving for many years anticipating making a purchase like this. Good luck on your remote cabin search!!! Thank you for watching!
Just discovered your channel! We had to start at the beginning and watch them all! Omg! You have done so much work on your property, looks very nice! Beautiful scenery and so peaceful! We have watched other Alaskan homestead videos and one suggestion to deter the bears is to spray the bottom half of your cabin and door with Pinesol. Apparently bears don’t like that smell! It would be worth a try! Keep up the good work!
Great to hear, thank you for checking us out! This place is our little piece of paradise. Thank you for the tip! We've got some pinesol out there and do most of our cleaning with it. Thank you for watching! Let us know if you have any questions😁
Tell us about your knife, you possibly have but i missed it.
I’ll talk about it in a video someday. The company is “Survive!” Out of Idaho, but they don’t exist anymore. Great knives with extremely precise tolerances. You can read some pretty strong opinions about the founder, Guy, on online blade forums.
I’ve waited a long time for the completion of your wharf and walk way. Looks really nice! Wow, cool job!
Thank you! The walkway only took two or three days to complete, but it seemed like forever in the TH-cam videos 🤣 thank you for watching!
Love the banjo, beautiful sound!
Thank you! Choosing music for a video can be a blackhole for time.. I usually only spend a few minutes searching for a song, and it worked out nicely on this one! Thank you for watching!
Pro tip: burn that rope facing down so that it won’t drip on you. Trust me, flaming rope napalm hurts!
Good tip! "flaming rope napalm..." 🤣 that's a good one! Thank you for watching!
When you fish you look rested and peaceful Chris, you so deserve that quiet time. You and your Dad so deserve that, are those bird sounds for real if they are you have many birds around your property? Will your family join you soon? Thanks/Canada
It's peaceful out there! Especially on the lake, be it fishing or just paddling. There are lots of birds out there, although I don't know all their types. If you hear a sound, it's likely real. The only sound effects I add are to cover the occasional bad word that slips out 😅 for that, we use a duck. and there are a few types of ducks who actually visit this lake. Thank you for watching!
I guess one of those solar shower bags is potentially in the cabin’s future.
Funny enough, there's one in the cabin from the mid to late 1980's! I'll give it a test one of these trips. Thank you for watching!
I just punch through, but Lord how I’ve come to detest dramatic drone footage with drippy tunes..
Thank you for punching through! What do you prefer as background sound during drone footage, if any? Thank you for watching!
Great content, I have a cabin south of you and can check on your place this winter if you want. No floats, but do have skis.
Thank you! No need to make a special trip, but if you’re in the area, it’s always good to hear if the place is still standing 😆 thank you for watching!

Great video! How many months will you be away from the cabin? What items or supplies will you be bringing back on your return trip?
Hopefully I can get back there in March. If not March, then hopefully July, and/or September. I have some safety equipment like ear/eye pro, winter boots, and hopefully a solar panel. Let me know if you have any good ideas for gear and supplies!
@OhashiOutdoors Yes solar is a must have. We are looking for a system here in the Philippines- we have solar lighting outside. I would have to have a wheelbarrow and maybe a long pry bar for digging.
@@charlesandanaylnw4892 The pry bar is a good idea! Those are always useful. Getting a wheel barrow out there isn't impossible, but I usually feel there is a better use of space in the aircraft on our trips. Maybe someday though! Good Luck on your solar system hunt down there!
@OhashiOutdoors I was thinking the same thing with the wheelbarrow- maybe if it was completely dismantled- it would take a lot less space on the plane. Solar systems are responsibly priced here- China is close. I have decided on panels (15) and the invertor - having issues deciding on the batteries.
that’s how we’d have to do it! There’s one benefit of being close to China 😅 sounds like you’re getting everything figured out! Good luck on the battery search. My full solar-setup is several years away from happening. If I were to choose now, I’d choose large batteries that are modular and can be added to, if needed. I look forward to hearing what you end up going with if you’re open to sharing!
Looking forward to your next trip. Very entertaining.😢😢😊😊😊😊😊
Hopefully we don't have long to wait! I can't wait to get up there again myself. Best wishes to you!
