Les, That is one of the very best American video's on railways I have ever seen. The content just blows you away. Congratulations and I hope you enjoyed your holiday as much as I enjoyed the video. Cheers Rod
Wow, thanks! Thats much appreciated. I wish I could get TH-cam to share it with american railfans! You should enjoy my video on the Cumbres & Toltec - maybe two of them as I have yet to edit the hours of footage!
Glad you enjoyed it. Its number two on my list and to be honest this trip was even better than my previous ones. The scenery is more spectacular than I remembered. The train crews were so enthusiastic, even with the end of season within days.
Thanks for taking the time to edit and upload this! I was wondering when I would get to see video from that day. Always fun when you get to take your vest off and get dirty. All in all, was still a great day for a train ride. -Conductor Tyler
@@trolley323 Thanks ! It looked like the crew enjoyed the experience! Very well done. Even so I could see the problem with the loco could have had a much more serious outcome.
Well, that was epically beautiful and very intriguing. Beautiful sites, but some of the heights might have gotten to me,e specially with all the issues the trains were having... bearings and brakes and more. YIKES! Great video of what must have been an awesome trip! Take care.
It was fantastic Anthony. Much better than I was expecting. The Highline is quite a height isn't it but since coming back I;ve been reading up on some of the lost Colorado narrow gauge lines where you can still 'drive' along. One has the narrowest and crumbling ledge - no way Jose!
Now that's the way to run a railway. Beyond spectacular Les in every way, from the scene itself to the video and editing work by you and James. The "problems" of the day did not detract from the experience but as you were in capable hands it added value to the day. I found the turn around in Silverton to be most interesting, CN could learn something by watching that. I have just returned from my latest UK venture. I had once again considered a surprise visit to Carlisle where I was sure I would find you. As it turns out you were in Colorado at the time. Kind regards, David.
David, great to hear from you! It seems a pretty slick operation at Durango and it looked like all the rules were followed. Obviously I sped up the turning moves at Silverton (it takes quite a time for a train to leave the terminus and get down to the wye, but putting one train in as the other was coming out and ready to head back was fascinating. I assume you went to GETS whilst you were over. I think I missed a few things both railway and otherwise whilst away but I wouldnt have swapped our time in Colorado at all!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Yes, among other things I did make it to GETS for the first time. Allan at Dragon Junction Mk II has a video of the weekend and pictures of those in attendance.
Great Video Leslie. Took me back 26 years to when I visited. I must get the DVD off the shelf and play . It was taken by one of our group. I still have all of my photos as well. The locos were coal fired when I was there. Did they "blow down" the Boiler on the High Line ??
@@davidscott6468 sadly I didn't capture the blow down on the high line or any of the bridges. The last loco here was I think converted to oil earlier this year
What a fantastic up and down! An all action trip! I checked the website and they do a “Polar Express” in the depths of winter: is that on your bucket list? BTW I’m guessing coal fired and how many locomotives do they run?
@@theo-v7t it was a vacation trip from UK so a winter visit is sadly not feasible. The polar express only runs on the lower part of the line. All oil burners now for the k36s and k37s. Not sure how many operable locos they have.

Thank you Les, a fantastic railway what an experience! The train crews appeared to be in good humour despite it being a very heavy days work.

Marvellous video, thanks Les, a truly spectacular railway, unbelievable scenery, a must on anyones bucket list.

A fantastic video! This one is on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! You should really do this and the Cumbres and Toltec!
All you need with a sheer drop, sounds of rending, creaking and squealing! Super stuff for me.
It is spectacular!

That would be an interesting concept - a narrow-gauge 9F.
@@roboftherock I think the proportions are about right. Just smaller wheels
What stunning scenery Les. Are these loco’s coal or oil fired ? Wonder why they were hosing down the locos at Silverton
All oil now on this line. I think that the dust was being washed off - the locos are on public view when not being turned at Silverton
