      Thanks! It certainly is - even the Canadian/US built Class 66s and US built Class 70s look tiny in comparison, certainly above the bogies

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways

      @@stephendavies6949 the bogies aren't much different but above them it grows significantly both up and across. Much larger loading gauge.

    • @Grid56
      @Grid56 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's funny as it mostly is north american😂. The consists don't take up as much room as the us ones though. We don't have to wait an hour at rail crossings for the trains to pass with only 24 to 30 wagons. You do have more room inside your coaches than our tight seating because your gauge is not restricted by Victorian infrastructure.

    Me and my son who was 13 at the time stayed in Carlisle Station spotting until 4.30am. We asked the staff for permission and they even kept the waiting room open for us. The caley sleeper were trialling the new stock so we had a great time along with also seeing a rescue.
    My son on the platform all night just in a t-shirt told you how happy he was.

      @LeslieGilpinRailways there were elderly people there decked out for the night like light campers. It was asking them if they were staying the night that tempted us to do the same. This was before covid.

    Another great video Les. Thank you. Are you able to explain what's in all those trucks which shuttle back and forwards between Carlisle Network Yard and Tyne System Sidings? It's like a mini industry in it's own right(!) which, on the face of it, seems pretty inefficient. All best JP, Cheltenham, UK.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Network Rail engineer's trains usually take new or old permanent way materials to concentrate them at either of the two yards. There are similar workings from Millerhill (Edinburgh) and Crewe Basford Hall. The more track relaying there is the more wagons on these trains.

    Not surprised the Class 20s are having problems - Not sure if they are contemporary with the 37s or slightly older but I'm guessing they are roughly the same age...

    There is only one freight train service here in ireland and its only allowed to be 18 wagons in length as most mainline here and single track and the passing loops only are good for that size of train.

    A strange fault with the 20, it looked like a brake problem but seems only affected on the leading locomotive. Electrical fault preventing the brakes releasing perhaps.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was definitely a brake fault on D8107. I wondered if it had been discovered the night before when the pair ran to Upperby via London Road, thus putting D8096 at the south end. But why then turn them again to put D8107 at the south. The matter seems serious enough that D8107 was shunted without power to allow D8096 back to the south end.

    Your 66’s sound like our Dx series, both GM, but gauge is 1067mm! All Dx’s will be gone, probably by end of 2026, with 66 new Stadler Dm’s. Finally KiwiRail buys quality!

      @LeslieGilpinRailways  หลายเดือนก่อน

      So many 66s were bought after 1996 that I think there are enough to keep them going for some time. The freight companies talk about investment but seem to buy the odd high profile loco here and there but the totally new ones have never been in service
