hi there, great video, love the class 20's,wish we still had mk2d coaching stock on the Euston to scotland service. at least the windows line up with the seats,,air line seats on trains just crazy, these days
Back in the days when the northbound west coast services used to split at Carstairs (front portion Glasgow, rear portion Edinburgh) the 47 due to work the Edinburgh portion wouldn't start. Only available loco at Carstairs was the class 20 for the local trip tp Mossend. The single 20 ended up working the six coaches into Edinburgh. I asked the driver what it was like (I was a driver myself at the time), his reply was that on the climb up to Cobbinshaw it was struggling so much you could have got off for a pee and got back on again!
Hi Les, lovely stuff again especially the 20's. I don't know if it was a grick of the light but when the pair went past towards Upperby I couldn't see a red light at the rear of the trailing loco.
great video Les some superb footage there matey , nice to see 2 of the so called "NOISEY" 68s back in servise 😯 they sounded great to me dont know what all the fuss is about 😀 many thanks for sharing Les take care mate a t b Syd 👍
@@foxstrangler thanks.. that's the old 4A signal box with the veranda, closed around electrification in 72/73 when the crossover roads for shunting carriages were removed. Station Master's office always on platform 4 and at the end in the offices above.
Good show again. I wonder about the rail head treatment trains. The condition they get into seems to be wasteful of the spray fluids. As someone who has worked with steel works descaling and equipment cooling water the need is to get the force of the jet where you need it then destroy the energy after it has done its work. This can be done with apposing jets set to just hit below the surface(of the rail). Dependent on pressure and spray pattern, water will either cut or erode anything it contacts.
@@briancooper562 thanks. Given the mileage covered by each rhtt with those few tanks I'd have thought that they were quite efficient. The water is pretty focussed and only fired out where it's needed, though how the operator knows is a trick they've never told me. It has to bounce back somewhere though.
Hi Les, great video as always. Can i ask if you know why class 20's were not seen to be a successful design of loco back in the day but nowadays seem to be quite popular. Is there some reason for this or are they purely used on specials or as reserve motive power for whatever company can see a use for them.
Good question!I don't think there is a link between technical success in service and current popularity. As far as I know these were the more successful of the BR Modernisation Scheme Type 1 locos and of course were remembered by many of a certain age for their use by BR on certain specials and the East Midlands to Skegness summer services.
Excellent from you as always Les, thanks for sharing sir 👍
My pleasure
Wow, this is another great montage on the railways - thank you 🙏
Thanks!

Thanks! Driven hard they can be really noisy. I think the issue is one is parked under your bedroom window all night!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways you should.'nt buy a house next to a railway line then Les 🤣
Cold at Carlisle? Who'd a thunk it. First time I've noticed the verandah on the Station Master's office. Nice work as always.
