how long should my LONGEST RUN for MY FIRST 100 miler be?
How long should my longest training run for my first 100 mile ultra marathon be?
Great question... In this training video I cover two different scenarios.
1. with over 6 months to train
and
2. with less than 6 months to train.
then wrap up with 3 key points that are just as if not more important than the actual "long run" itself

    Mate, too much self advertising. Real vid starts around minute 3. Useful info from there, but tbh 35km seems a little short for longest pre-race run; I've just done a slow 30km but definitely not yet ready for a 50km. Am gonna do a 43km one, then try for a 60km one.

      Appreciate the feedback. As for the distance (remember time not miles) has worked for myself and plenty of my athletes and is backed by plenty of studies on athletes to get full potential. One of if not the only reason people do longer runs is to build confidence. Prior to my first 50k the longest trail run I did was 15miles…. And I finished the 50k feeling better than any marathon I’ve ever ran.

    • @myendurancelifeofficial

      For a 50k I like to get my longest run in 4 weeks before the race. This way if I need to adjust any nutrition or gear changes I have time to try something the following week before tapering

    How do you adjust the cadence ( do you) with steep uphill or downhill running?

    • @myendurancelifeofficial
      @myendurancelifeofficial หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Depending on the grade and how runnable the terrain is I don’t pay much attention to my spm on hills (especially trails) When running up (short of a chop step) my cadence definitely slows down. According to my Strava data around a 165-175 and for downhills I run with the mindset (whatever I can control) the quicker the cadence the better, sometimes. I’ve seen my spm up around 220-230 Mainly I made this video to help with an effective and efficient way to keep our strides nice short and quick keeping our foot contact underneath us so don’t overstride Hope this helps

    I guess I am surprised that you keep a cadence of 184 at a 12 minute mile pace. I guess I would understand that if it was part of cadence training but to do it as the new normal is surprising-feel tired thinking about it. But maybe you get used to it

    • @myendurancelifeofficial
      @myendurancelifeofficial หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. So we’re on the same page. This is my comfortable cadence. Everyone is different. But to answer your question: the goal of a higher cadence is to keep your feet landing underneath your body (center of gravity) A 178-184spm at a 12 minute pace over time has become comfortable. To where I don’t have to think about it anymore. And for sake of training purposes, for road running. (for me) Keeps me from over striding, especially at a slower pace pace, and especially when I start to get fatigued. Helps with my form keeping my nice and tight. For trails, when running/jogging it will be around the same 178-184. But as soon as you mix in hiking and walking during a long effort most apps (Strava) will show an avg of around 160 for me. Hope this helps

    180 is not optimal for all runners… there are some really good (ultra)marathon runners that keep their cadence below 160, and some 10K racers that keep cadence around 170… and their cadence (and stride length) varies a lot based on the pace, and body composition… see the videos from Fredrik Zillén about this subject.

    Sounds like regular diet. Question. How long does it take for body start using ketones as fuel? If your organs liver muscles filled up with glycogen then you're not in ketosis. More interested in cornivore and endurance.

    • @myendurancelifeofficial
      @myendurancelifeofficial 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In my personal experience it took about 2 weeks for my body to adapt. I went full carnivore for 4 weeks then started introducing carbs back in strategically. The reason for a "Low Carb" approach is so your body is still used to processing carbs for fuel, using them in an as needed case such as a running or race day fueling. Check out the call we had with Jeff Browning he goes into more detail.

    Great interview! I'm not a runner but have been walking in local 5k events starting at age 53. I can relate with what both you guys were talking about overcoming adversity. Last year I had to have a hip replacement. In April of this year a local run/walk of 4 miles was scheduled. I set a goal to participate in that event which was 6 months post open. My goal was just to finish and not be the last person on the course. I succeeded by finishing in 1hour 9 minutes and was a very long way from being the last on the course! I may never progress past the 5k stage to longer events but my success has encouraged my to try! Thanks!

    Great information! I had received personal training in the past that had shunned heal striking, the training was from a road marathon runner so maybe that was why he had the stigma that he taught to his clients. I have run with Eric many times and one of the many things I noticed running with him was the way his feet hit the ground. It is so important, as Eric mentions, that we do not get caught in a one size fits all mentality, figure out what works for you and do that, changing to fit someone else's form may lead to injury, which I have experienced in the past. So thankful for these videos Eric, keep that information flowing. See you on the trails.

    Awesome video my favorite. I’m healing a I pulled adductor muscle right now, so I’m doing about probably 80% or more carnivore. But I’m believing this injury is gonna be hell over and and then that’s the approach. I’m gonna try to mix in as a 62-year-old runner only been on carnivore for three weeks and my wife been about the same but I’ve leaned out, tremendously for specially, since I’m not even running Unbelievable I love it I feel so good. The other aspect is the mental side I’m focused instead of anxiety and those and some just I’m really focused in my whole life. I wish I’m trying to find books and stuff to people to address that cause I’m very interested in that about what the low to no carb does to your brain I mean, just fix it , good video

      Awesome Todd thanks for sharing. I believe in a low carb approach too. My wife and I started together and had very similar results like you described. We started full carnivore for a month then slowly started reintroducing carbs (mostly fruit) back into our diet. . I would incorporate carbs into my long runs however during the first month. Never felt better. Hope you’re healing up.
