Using the OP-XY Multisample engine to sample a piano and a Choir doll
This video demonstrates the process I've been using to make multisampler presets on the @teenageengineering OP-XY. The video is a bit longer because I included some of the more tedious parts of the process.
I don't show the arranging, but the final playthrough is at 25:52

Reasons NOT to buy an OP-XY (from a Teenage Engineering fanboy)

A few people have said they bought an OP-XY because of my videos. While I love my XY and plan to use it as my main workstation, there aren't many people I'd recommend it to. I made this video to balance my excitement and tendency to focus only on what a device can do and how to creatively apply it. Hope this gives a bit of a different perspective! Do global punch in fx effect audio coming into XY?
Nope, only internal engines and MIDI on the XY
that arrangement sounds so badass(especially the part at 26:09). thank you for the tutorial. ❤
How is Carlo's latency on OPXY vs OPX?
If the choir was built as an engine in the OPXY I'd buy it. Friggin love the Choir.
I'm not sure. I found him more annoying to use with the Z, but I haven't tried anything too complex yet with the XY.
@@windowbed looking forward to lots more Carlo experiments. I have a half set choir. Lmk if you wanna borrow them for op xy tests.
Just finished watching. That was super helpful. I've been playing with the regular sampler trying to get guitar cords into it just to play with something I'm familiar with. But the lack of being able to control the looping period Was really messing with me.
I vote that that one guy gets more votes in the future LOL
Bro. I spit out my coffee when you said your cat bites you when she hears Carlos.. 😂
heck yeah… have not touched the multi sampler yet but this is nice! glad I caught this one
i wanna start a band wya boy
you said out of the ko2 but you didnt say whether it was the sync out or the midi out
can you do a video for syncing the KO2 to ableton via trs/midi, no usb
There’s no audio for the XY sounds for the first few mins here.
Oh man. I want the Chroma Console so bad!!!
Glad you posted this.. been excited to play with my xy and chroma or microcosm together but with all the figuring out and bugs it put me off to experiment for a while. (I gotta buy more split cables too lol).
I've never seen a MIDI Implementation Chart on a TE product. :(
Always coming back to your videos! Feel like tip 5 could be a whole other video that would be super helpful. For example, I want to sample lyrics from a song that is in c major, but my beat and melodies are in d#, so with the midi transpose function I should be able to move my lyrics up 3 semitones? Things like that are where I get stuck.
Very useful - thank you!
GD Jeff!
is there a way to midi map all of the controls? like have the 16 controls set to 16 knobs/sliders on an arturia keylab?? that would be incredible
Yep! I mapped the controls to a Keylab 88, though at this point it has more parameters than I have knobs. I also mapped the controls to my OP-Z, though it's not great for saving presets because it doesn't always save/load the last parameter page.
@@windowbed whoa thats awesome! thank you for the response, i think im gonna get one. i am also pumped for his kaleidoscope coming soon! check it out if you haven't yet.
I have another challenge for you: if you have 4 bars and you create a trigger in the first one, how can you make the note be 3 bars long? I haven't found a way to make notes super long, like longer than one bar, unless I change the scaling and I do everything on it.
Depending on what else you need to do on that step, you might be able to accomplish this with a Hold step component. Those tutorials are coming very soon :)
Hilarious😂
When TE first brought out the OP-1 it stayed pretty much the same over its product life cycle. They fixed bugs. I don't think they added fx or engines. There was a hidden engine with some special firmware. Idk if the hardware was limited but I felt they could do a lot more on the software side. I felt this way with ever TE product...
How do you got it for free? By the way, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, would you love to have a logo for your music journey and your channel to have a brand image your audience can remember your contents from and also can be one of the merch print you can sell to your fans to buy and own and share the words about your channel too? Let me know if you interested and I would love to work with you to design these for you! :-)
Dang the mixer is deeper than I thought
Good timing, I was just trying to figure this out myself earlier today when I discovered that “muting” the fx tracks “doesn’t work” (apparently because I was actually trig muting, not audio muting).
As an old school Godflesh and Jesu fan this really made me smile. Hadn't spent much time in the mixer yet so this was very helpful in getting to grips with it, thank you
Thank you! And I'm glad others knew the song :)
Great tips! Loving my XY. Justin Broadrick is the GOAT
Thank you! And YES--Justin Broadrick is probably my favorite musician ever.
It' incredible how they have such an attention to detail on the workflow related functions like soloing, applying parameters to multiple tracks etc. Thanks for deep diving into this!
🎼🎶🎶🎹👍
Moving over 12 and 6 what does that mean ?
Why Copy @audiopilz or steal his Concept? Please make original content. You've been doing till now so we'll with your authentic videos and nerdyness, James!
Don't worry, I've planned to make exactly one video that parodies (tributes?) Bad Gear for over a year now. I was just waiting for the right time. :)
Grok : OP XY is kind of like that exotic dish you tried once - interesting, but not compelling enough to eat often. The MPC Key 37, on the other hand, is like a trusty old burger: you know what you're getting, and it's always good.
Bad take
Very nice. Also, if you or anyone with an OPZ want to make a full length song on the OPZ (you know how you run out of patterns quickly): - create a tune in project 1 - connect OPZ to your PC via the provided usb-c - open the projects folder, copy paste your current projects onto your computer to save them for later. - now delete the other 9 Projects in the OPZ, but keep the Project 1 with your cool song you wish to lengthen - Copy and Paste Project 1 nine times. - Re-name the files project2.opz, project3.opz etc - once done, press play on OPZ to eject safely and disconnect cable Now you have the same song copied over 10 projects, each one you can adjust slightly to make it into a full length or a really long song. OPZ you cant chain Projects to auto play all of them, but you now can record each one on your daw/program of choice and there you go. All the best.
Thank you
At first glance this intro tune is ticking all the boxes.
i sent mine back , will probably pick up again when price drops / bugs fixed
The video is crazy. You say that the device is your "main workstation" and that you like it, but you wouldn't recommend it to anyone because it's still too buggy. Are you a masochist? Fun fact: Roland's MC-707 is also an 8-track groovebox, but costs $1,200 less.
Ah, I think the confusing part is that I look like a wannabe synthfluencer but I'm actually a wannabe teacher. TE gear makes a ton of sense to me and I'm already a pretty advanced OP-Z user, so I get a bit worried that I'm making OP-XY tempting by making it look easier to use than it is. Deep dive tutorials are my thing and I've never made a "should I buy" video before, so I wanted to balance out the temptation with some reasons to not buy one.
@@windowbed Fair enough.
You forgot that he said that he “got it for free” which changes a lot of things
@@lo_bias2382 He got it for WHAT??
If you look at the vast majority of videos out there right now the OP-XY is apparently "dope", it "blows people's minds". So what am I waiting for, I should just buy it! What? I haven't bought it already??? Thank you for keeping it real. Someone has to be the bad guy. I am very positive that the OP-XY will one day be what I am looking for. But for the time being I will keep watching your channel, let us all know when those bugs get fixed. You are doing us a great service 🙏
Thank you for the kind words! It's a weird dilemma: it fits my needs nicely and does so much that I can't articulate it all in one video, but it's still very limited in ways people may not expect. Bugs usually spark curiosity instead of anger in me, so I'm excited to explore all its abilities and limitations.
I loved the intro. Funny writing. :)
The TE OP-XY project marries two very nice but incompatible designs. The OP-1 field and the OP-Z gave birth to an ugly bastard, which seems to me like a AI-generated design-study for future TE gear…
My reason for not buying op xy is monies. What’s your excuse?
I think this software still feels a bit in it's beta stages.
Thanks for this. I owned the original OP-1 for several years before selling it in 2020. I was in the market for the OP-1 Field right when this thing came out. After reviewing all the videos and understanding the use cases, I'm still buying an OP-1 Field instead of the OP-XY. I view this new black flagship as being more about programming than intuitive performance. Will revisit when the bugs are worked out.
This thing would really benefit from at least 4 trs outs or something. It really doesn’t feel as powerful without that, and the multisamples bugs you mentioned are a dealbreaker unless it gets fixed
Do you think 8gb storage is enough?
For me, definitely. No idea about others.
The price obviously 🙄
Ok, that does it. I'm getting the op-z.
Make sure you buy it from somewhere with a good return policy, or even better, from a high street shop. TE still haven't fixed the warping. They are still selling defective units.
Some valid points and I also own it.I think going back and listening to some of the things you are saying “it’s not easier than”I hear a lot of apple and orange comparisons.and a lot hope on never promised features.and this muddy’s the water.make no mistake xy was rushed and that’s a strike on T.E.but any and all comparisons are moot.saying because a menu was somewhere different on op-1 is irrelevant information.could have been an email.
I was so confused whose channel I was watching when the intro started. lol
Honeymoon phase is over, as expected. Sounds like a turd for $2300
I'm just getting started, and I guarantee I can make any instrument sound like a turd, no matter how expensive it is.
@ No, you are actually one of the best channel for this this. I didn’t mean sounds as in synth engines, I meant all the bugs, limitations etc.
You are right on all points. So far, i find the buttons arrangement and menu access to be very non-ergonomic. It's a pitty that TE just recycled the body of the Field for that. It would have be so much better as a machine if they would have just build another body specifically for the kind of ergonomy this unit needs
