@@circuitmouth thanks! It has a couple things along those lines: the maestro player and the brain track. I haven't really explored either of those though
Nice that TE recognized that this should be in the hands of the op-z wizard. The more I watch the xy, the more I love my z. Thank god they made the xy too expensive for me to even consider 😂
Love the video!! Finger on the trigger to get one. A few questions if you have any guidance on these as I can't find answers in the manual... How do you export a track? Can you easily export stems? Does it export audio only or midi as well?
10:18 I wonder if you can shape a kick with the filter, and resample it onto itself. If not I guess you could resample it at the last key of the kit and copy paste it. That would be a nice workaround.
Wow, finally someone who focused on the features and not the price. I recently got rid of my OP-Z, it was a an amazing piece of gear, it just had some quirks that got annoying. This seems to have solved some of the problems. I hated having to remember button combination to unlock basic features. The build quality and double triggers. I just have to figure out how to come up with 2.5k 😅.
Does the Master track (Brain now) still indicate included notes in the different scales? I like how the op-z shows the included keys with light. As a non musician I lean on that crutch 😅 Overall exactly what I’ve been wanting, an updated op-z with more reliable keys, better synths and sturdy build. Psyched about the new arrangement features, not missing the video stuff at all.
If the Master track identifies the scale you're using, it will show a little diagram of the notes you can use on the screen. The keyboard keys don't light up though, which was definitely a cool part of the Z
hey man, i am really biased about this thing.. looks better because I like black and the multiple EQ is nice, plus the multiple sampling and sampling in general and the synths, but it's too big and doesn't feel like it is a Op-Z at all.. also cutoff on the drumssounds but most of all no dmx nor visuals, which were vital. are the old opz files readable by this unit? not sure if you still do op-z videos but i found an interesting bug. basically i was changing sounds with new selfmade sample packs. and removed all synths so i could put in my own samples... BUT i had my old projects in it. so guess what? my old project were playing as if the old sounds were still there(not consistent though) i belive only the stock sound ones. only caveat is when for example you play that old track and press the I button to see which synth or drum it uses obviously nothing is lighted ;) oh and, do you happen to know a solution to doing step effect on tracks with shift and they being recorded without record? real annoying. fucked up my beats quite a couple of time. and 2nd. why doesn't it work if you put on that childs lock(where the I is red and it doesnt save anything) not even when you press P & + (or was it I & + cant recall) but lost quite some cool shiz with it :)
Copied from another reply: They seem to, but I won't know the details until I do a deep dive (might be a while). For example, the F punch-in FX mutes the track, but it only mutes the engine, not the outgoing MIDI. The punch-in effect that loops notes will also loop outgoing MIDI.
could you show how exactly the bars work? for instance, how do you edit a step on bar 2? I dont see a way to make the step buttons represent the steps of bar 2. during recording of course the "page flips automatically", but what happens when you press stop on bar 2? will the step buttons represent bar 2 or bar 1?
Holding Bar and hitting +/- will add or remove a page, and tapping bar will move you to the next page to edit it. If you stop the sequencer on bar 2 the steps will represent bar 2. Also I'm used to working with 1 page of steps so I'm probably missing some important details/comparisons
@@reneeschke on the screen it briefly displays the bar menu. At the top are numbers 1-4. All active bar numbers are circled, and the current bar is highlighted. But you have to hold Bar every time you want to check which kinda sucks
super curious to hear you expound on precisely why you prefer the opxy synth engines over the op1f. also, is there not a drum synthesis engine? i hope it was just left out of this video 🙏

@@samprock yes, I think it's for undoing what you recorded last and not for step sequencing Edit: yes, in theory but I haven't used it meaningfully in practice so it remains theoretical.
@@windowbed Thanks for the answer! Yes, undo for last played recording would be sufficient, hope it has it! One more question if you could. Does it have pressure velocity sensitive? Is it the same business as on OP-1? I thought I heard someone pointing today it has, but can't remeber which one from a hundred I listened thru today while working :)
One thing I've never been sold on with the OP series are the synths. I had an OP1, have an OPZ, and the synth engines don't sound great, won't mention price ;). I'm wondering if TE did better with the engines available on this guy.
They're waaaaaay better sounding to my ear than their other synth engines, though I haven't spent a ton of time with them yet. Like they actually sound big and are pretty customizable (compared to other TE products). I've never loved the OP-1's engines because they sound so thin, and the Z's engines are hit or miss for me.
I bought the OP-1 years ago when it just came out as there was nothing like this. Since then TE has constantly improved and delivered on their design fetishs. I have to say that i have lost a bit interest since TE hasn't really evolved in building instruments in my opinion since then and instead has essentially doubled their prices for no reason. This doesn't create bigger value in my opinion. What is valuable is the fun that one gets from making music and even with the OP-1 i found that not so much the case. I bought it for its design language and the way it interfaces, but always felt that actual music making on it felt too flimsy and finical. Not inspiring.
A few times in the guide it says it can save "thousands" of projects, but I'd imagine that depends on how much storage you use for samples etc. You can group patterns into scenes, and then chain scenes together into songs. Each project can have 10 songs. So lots more menus but way more project-friendly! You do have to manually save though.
No disrespect to you personally or your videos or content - but this thing is way to expensive. Is there even an sd card slot? Whats the memory limit? How many effects can be used at once? Can you just drag and drop wav files into it or do you have to use a website to convert them like with the KO II?
@@mavfan1 Too expensive for serious musicians too, impractically expensive. For the majority of musicians, they would have to be absolutely married to the OP-1 workflow to consider this as an option. Considering what can be obtained for that amount of money.
TE’s business strategy explained for the haters (includes bonus positive for haters!): If you find yourself getting irrationally triggered every time TE announce a new product that you can’t afford or would never choose to buy on the basis of the price alone then let me give you some insights that may calm the rage. But firstly let’s be clear, nobody at TE gives a shit you think their gear is overpriced. In fact they probably just see it as confirming that their strategy is working just fine. So what is the strategy? Well, being a technology design and innovation led brand, they need to fund the significant RnD costs required to make products that push the medium of music production technology forward. Now you may not like the direction they’re taking but again, who really cares what you think apart from your mum maybe? If you don’t like it then you’re free to ignore everything TE are doing. (Strange that you don’t though isn’t it?). Anyway, so who’s going to fund all this high cost design and innovation RnD? Well you’ll never guess who, but it’s those folks who actually LIKE what TE are doing and who can AFFORD it. (Crazy concept huh?). I know, life’s not fair that some can afford this sort of indulgence and you can’t but hey, chances are if you’re reading this you’ve still won the lottery of life compared to probably 85% of the rest of the planet’s population. So you know, it ain’t that bad when the biggest outrage in your life is that a piece of state of the art tech is out of your financial reach. You poor thing. Now the one thing about TE’s business model that most of you haters seem to completely miss whilst you’re having one of those pearl clutching public episodes of rage and hate is that ironically this business model of TE’s is actually designed for you to benefit the most from. Yes, YOU!! And no, you really don’t deserve it given your petulant outbursts but here it is for you given you can’t seem to grasp what’s happening here. All those “fools and idiots” who are shelling out thousands to buy an OP-XY (or whatever else TE release in the future for thousands of dollars) are indirectly subsidising the next KO II or whatever follows in TE’s affordable line. You know, the product that YOU can actually afford and are happy to consider spending your hard earned dollars on. By charging a premium to the early adopters of the premium expensive products enables TE to launch the KO II and other affordable cool products. So be thankful. Without companies like TE, their peers and predecessors who charge a premium for innovation and the customers who supported them, YOU wouldn’t have the Behringer clone options of the world you “enjoy” today at bargain prices. Innovation and RnD is wildly expensive. Especially when it’s done well. If you’re too ignorant and ill informed to be able to grasp this fundamental concept that’s been in place in technology for decades then it also explains perhaps why you can’t afford it. And so the easier option is just to get angry, get outraged and throw shit at it. All very helpful. By way of another example, I was working for Dell Computer back in the early 90s when they launched their first range of laptops. They cost around $8-10k. And that was 30 years ago. Who bought them? Mostly high networths and senior business execs. Who, for a huge premium got to enjoy what was at that time the latest and greatest in portable computing. Yes you could buy a big assed desktop for a 1/3 of the price that could perform the same functions but there was just a premium price to have to pay for the portability factor and innovation required to bring it all together. Fast forward to today and you can buy a laptop 50 times more powerful for a tenth of the price. You’re probably lucky enough to have one of those yourself (being one of the privileged 15% wealthy elites on this planet), all thanks to those “idiots and fools” over the years who subsidised it for you by buying the very latest and greatest in portable computing over the decades. Lucky you! So, stop getting your knickers in a twist and enjoy whatever TE introduce next in the KO II family or, if you hate TE so much you just don’t want a bar of them - save your emotional outrage for something really worth getting outraged about. You know, like starving children in Africa or genocide in the Middle East or Ukraine… etc etc. There’s a long list and besides, getting triggered by expensive cutting edge tech you don’t want to buy or can’t afford really isn’t good for your mental health. Stay well. 🙏
