Welcome to my channel named IROCinZ! Here on the channel, I will be doing how-to's and mechanical repairs on just about anything. It was created for people that know the basics of auto care and maintenance but need a guide. The videos will be in-depth and detailed on most things. Of course, the main thing is my Camaros. I grew up with the IROC-Z and alot of my friends drove the 3rd gen F-Bodies and had a blast with them. The aftermarket is great for these cars and you can pick them up fairly cheap.
My background is automotive. I started at a young age with my Grandpa teaching me alot from him being a MAC mechanic. I knew at that point that I liked about anything mechanical, so I made a career of it. It has its ups and downs just like anything else. I decided its now time to share what I learned with the rest of the community.
I hope you enjoy the content, please share it with your friends. My only real goal is for someone to learn something from what I teach...

Hey Smitty, hope you're keeping well and this message reaches you. I had a full rebuild of the 700R4 in my 89 IROC-Z. It seems like it's revving at higher RPM to achieve 70 mph in overdrive. I have 2.77 rear end and think I used to be at 70 mph at 2000 rpm but now when I'm doing 2000 rpm I seem to be at about 65 mph. Is that possible? Surely there are only one set of cogs for overdrive in a 700R4? Thanks!
thanks for the help man i have a 4L80E in my 3500 6.5 diesel
I've found the easiest way to pull the front seal out is with a slide hammer with a screw.
No prying on the magnesium case
@332ARA I have done that, just not on that seal...great idea tho!
@@IrocinZ What is your opinion on the adapt a case pump plate? The Merchant aluminum piece is pricey. Does the plate work or is there a drawback?
Maybe there was an issue with the contacts in the connector. Worth trying a little QD cleaner and dielectric grease before ordering a new cluster.
Which rebuild kits are you buying? There’s so many 😂
What the pressure plate and apply plate thickness?
Where do you buy your rear case half’s from?
Can you use the direct clutch wave plate on the forward drum? My wave plate on the forward pack was cracked clean through in one spot. It almost looked like the direct wave plate in this vid
One side of the clip that holds the tcc or pc solenoid broke on mine. Whould that be why it hesitates after I put it in D then finally starts moving? The rpm’s will rise but dousing start moving for a few seconds
@@antwain7942 not usually. Sounds like it might have an internal leak or weak pressure...

Sooooo, thanks for the clarification; I went back to swap a piston in that 3rd gear clutch, and it helped aplenty to make sure the steels were in the right clutch. They're about .020 thicker in the 3rd than they are in the direct. I wish there was a apet-by-part install vid. I bought a thrust washer kit and had plastic "selectables" left over and a whole piston that I have no idea where it goes.....feel like I missed something? But thanks for the video; very, very helpful 💪🏻🙏🏻👍🏻
Glad it helped
pre-gritted for your pleasure.
Very helpful
Glad you think so!
For someone that is going to do this once, you still recommend pressing the pump bushings in or can they be driven by hand?
I would prefer the same, but if you are a home DIY'er, you make due with what you have.
I just tore my 80 down and my sprag was pretty chewed up. Looked like it heated up the bore and caused the sealing rings to fail and burnt both the intermediate and forward clutches. I’m on the hunt for a new direct drum assembly. Rest of the trans looks mint.
The 4L80's will take some abuse, that is what they were designed for...
@@IrocinZ I know the sprag clutches are basically the weakest link. I ordered some new borg Warner HD sprags and a new drum and center section. I’m hoping with the new circle d converter and a little luck it will last a long time.
hey brother. i just bougt a 92 camaro i just found this channel and i will be watching closely as i restore mine little by little. i thank you for sharing your knowledge for those of us who have little or none. thank you for your help in advance!!👍🏿👍🏿
Right on!
Does this mod make full time lube to rear planet? Think ima go this route as well. Thanks Much for info. Subscribed!
Can I get this parts list and where you got it I’m tearing my 263hd down today
The perfect video sir! I think this saved my gate and my patience. I tested the voltage like you did on that transformer and I'm getting 73 volts so I assume mine crapped the bed. Symptoms were massive close lightning strike today, smoke alarms in the house even squelched a bit from it. Gate stopped working. Fuse is good, green power light on the board on, transformer has a green indicator light and when you push the reset button on the outside box lower right you get the reset light to light up. Other than that, NOTHING on the board works as far as pushing buttons or indicator lights. Not sure if I pushed that button to the right of center that you kept pushing to get the blinking during your tests but I'll test that tomorrow morning. Good voltage to the batteries, good incoming current to the transformer and the pannel but nothing. I'll start with a new transformer.
Sounds like the board took a hit. I've been through a couple of them because of lighting...
What an excellent video series! Thank you very much for this video and the other parts!
Glad you like them!
Where can I get these parts?
Just about any good transmission supply house.
how is shift feel with these pistons
wind the scarf cut rings tight (smaller) and they will hug the shaft and not flar out.
no notch on the servo steel cover plate?
Very informative and educational and I thank you very much for the information. However I do not have the same taste in music and I gave me a headache.
@kellythompson6225 yeah, my later videos don't have any music...
So you had the sizer upside down in the beginning lol.

Hey man great video, i wanted to ask if a wrong assembly on the forward clutch pack could cause the low reverse cultch to burn, if somebody could help me pls
@Bryan-SmG anything is possible, but if you have a clutch pack not releasing, it sure could...
You sure didn’t spend no time on this subject mine is a new cage but when it came apart the bearings tops and bottoms were ate up it was open tcc solenoid and I still ain’t figured out why but it smoked forward spray and bearings
There are several videos on the forward sprag. Check out the 700r4 videos too...
Thank you for the video!!
@JCM111 Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, good vid though i don't know why you make band adjustment with no pump in. You can see the drum/ shaft move when you apply air. Have you thought about checking after you set the servo shaft length with the tool and pump in, also fit the 4th cover and snap then use dial indicator to cover see how much the cover moves in away from snap ring at rest. This is how I set my transmissions. I have found too long I won't get the snap in and if it just rolls in without force its dam near right.. Plus backyard builders would benefit with such knowledge. more than 1 way to skin a cat.
I wonder what brand of coffee this man drinks
@@dreece2000 I don't...
1:32 thanks for the video and your 4L80e video it has helped me a lot lost my 3rd and 4th gear in my 99 suburban
@@aaronwilliams6562 I'm glad you got something out of the videos!
Thank you for these straight forward videos. I used them as a tutorial for when I installed a Merchant Auto pump rub kit in my transfer case. Very well recorded and explained. One thing I did was I got a dog tag embossed with: Merchant Auto pump rub kit installed, the miles and date. I JB welded it to the hub flat on the outside of the case so others would know it’s been done and when. There’s really no other way to know. I bought the tag from Amazon. The vendor embossed it. 7.50 shipped. Worth it I think.
@@knightandfog Glad you like the videos, and that's a fantastic idea!
That doesn't explain how to get in if you're locked out.?
Very true. This was to assume the car was already unlocked...
Great video. I have a TH 400 and it has the same type of reverse servo. When I opened up my pan, the oil was low and two of the six bolts were out of their bores, on the magnet in the pan. Could this have happened due to improper torque? Or was someone in my transmission stealing parts. I bought this truck recently.
Could have been either...or someone attempted to repair it and only partiality put it back together. Glad you got something from the video
Hey Smitty take your #4 apply ring and cut the legs down 1/8" and you will have a #7. I have done it on 18-20 700's and Zero issues.
Thank you for this. Does the shaft that slides out/in for gate need to be lubricated as well?
Not sure, but I would use a light oil like Marvel Mystery Oil or white lithium grease
I like your glasses :)
LOL...Thanks?
Do you recommend ATF like the OEM or a different oil like a manual transmission syncromesh fluid?
I think Syncromesh is overkill. I recommend Dexron III but a synthetic. I like Amsoil products. Never had a problem with their oils...
Working on another 4l60e case but this time i can tell the case bushing has been changed which orientation do the notches go? Need to know asap last time i marked them eith paint pen.
Notches go toward the inside and I usually put them more toward the upper part of the case. Sorry about the long response time. Haven't been on here too much as of late...
Cheap gm design.
I'll admit, it has its flaws...
Love this, just a pity your not always on target with the focus of your camera
I'm a one man show. Would love to have a head cam, but can't afford it right now...
Whats those little spring you installed called that went on the outside of the 3-4 clutch pack. Im rebuilding a 4l60e and i didnt have those installed.
Those are called load springs. I've seen alot of builders and non builders leave those out. They're not expensive...
Hey buddy - I am trying to figure out my gate which is same model as yours. When I test the voltage on green and white I get 9 volts but when I test on white yellow or blue it is 0. Does that mean the circuit board is bad? Thanks for your help! Appreciate your video it has made me infinitely more knowledgeable.
No, it works off of RPM and voltage. The green wire should be the reference voltage going back to the board.
A HD stock build up is always welcome with a list of "Should replace as long as we are in there". Corvette servo, HD sun shell, wide band, 3-4 pistons and HD clutch build to start. Maybe a little discussion on spacer plates and check balls. Anything to address the weak points. Thanks.
Man, then why do sonnax make those metal balls to completely close the hole. All the videos i seen everyone is doing it.
Its a matter of builder preference more than anything. I prefer to leave the circuit functional.
I busted my center support pressing the bushing in. Just wanted crawl in a hole
Been there, done that, learned from my mistake.
15:20 in when u take the cog gear out it's a one piece and pulls from the top. I have to pull the shift fork out then shaft flip it over then remove snap ring, syncronizer, then cog gear and it's a one piece but bigger that fit around the bigger part of the shaft
Were do you order your parts from ,im in houston ,iv been useing transtar or whatever it takes, who do you recommend?
It's really who you prefer. I like talking to a parts guy, so I use Justin at Total Transmissions in Chicago. They have lots of good used hard parts too
Amen Brother good for you ! Glad he put you on a different path. JESUS IS KING🙏
Yessir!
