Hi gloss front doors are a typically British custom.
These are also all over the U.S. ☺️
I'm so glad you like the blue exterior. We had our lake cottage sided with a navy blue and we love the way it looks with the white windows and wood accents.
Another wonderful video! Thank you. However, please note that the maximum volume on your videos is not loud enough to allow flexibility for any ambient noise whatsoever. Please do what is possible (louder voice, closer to you mic, etc.) to increase your recorded volume.
This is my life now in every room of my 80s house i bought last year until i can save up to reno room by room.
Still waiting on that "defarmhouse your farmhouse" video
Farrow and ball colours. I have an oval blue accent wall and thinking of painting the rest of the room in new white that has a yellowish tint. I live in a warm climate and i like the cool/warm combination. What do you think?
People want white but don’t think about the constant cleaning process. Kids touching walls. Windows that get dirt or dust. It’s timeless but a pain
What is your thought on soapstone kitchen counters?
Beautiful!
Can’t stand sinks in islands or the range and sink on opposite sides of the room- I don’t want to walk 8-12 feet or dodge around a center island to carry a large pot of hot water or food- give me an L or U shaped kitchen with a continuous run of counter top and a shorter work triangle and if room a center island. No OTR microwave- just gross and does not have the proper size to vent a 30 or 36 inch cooktop (for efficiency your vent hood should be 6 inches wider than your cooktop for 3” overlapping each side of your cooktop. If you have to place your fridge at the end of a wall, first measure the door that will bump against it and put a utility pantry or regular pantry on the end and then your fridge and the door will open fully (just make sure your pantry is about about 2” shallower than your fridge). I don’t do accent walls, I use large print picture or paintings I find in thrift stores or a tapestry or the “accent” wall is where my TV and built ins are. I do creamy walls and ceilings - all the same color (we live in a small home with 8’ ceilings so the creamy white is from floor to ceiling and it has opened all the rooms up. I use color is curtains, area rugs, throw blankets and pillows and furniture and other decor pieces and florals, so when I get tired of something it’s easier to change out the soft decor than tile or repaint or buy new furniture (we have a taupe leather sofa and a cream fabric loveseat). We will redoing our kitchen and we are staying classic- white thin shaker cabinets, off white almost creamy quartz counters and a small marble tile backsplash with creams, golds and brown veins in it against a creamy background with antique bronze handles on all doors and drawers as we are aging in place in our new to us 1938 home. I will say if you are building a new home, really put your money into what can’t be seen or decorated- framing upgrade, insulation, plumbing, HVAC and/or radiant heat in the floors, roofing (upgrade to metal if you can), the best windows/exterior/interior doors you can afford, flooring, dimmable switches for lighting, lots of outlets in the work areas-kitchens, pantry, laundry, garage, bathrooms, outdoor water spigots on each exterior wall and at least one outdoor electric outlet on each exterior wall and also under your roof overhang if you like to put holiday lights up and you don’t have to run extension cords every where, upgrade your gutter system and put in French drains for good drainage against your foundation. After all that is done, then little by little finish the interior with the pretty stuff, you can always replace cheaper faucets with better ones down the line, same with curtains and curtain rods and furniture and decor items, keep your cabinets either a medium wood tone or white and neutral countertops and backsplashes because those countertops and backsplashes are very expensive to replace 10 years down the line, same with tile floors or shower tile- statement tile is beautiful but it ages your home- keep those things neutral and classic and you can change up colors and add trendy stuff with the soft decor.
It is great that you held up the swatches, but they read the same without a white background
In my area new homes are starting not to be all open, like in the past. The kitchens are now being a little concealed. The pandemic thought people they need separate not open spaces. .
Open concept is going away… not just for clutter reasons… heating and cooling / privacy at home. I didn’t realize how important this was, even for children. They want their own space, and not just their room. I can also control the heating and cooling of rooms not occupied… saving hundreds of dollars ‘monthly’ in the summer and winter.
Great tips. Something I am seeing in new builds in my area is the solid surface backsplash that is the same as the countertops. They are a dream to keep clean, and the look is modern.
We are desperately trying to figure out a white to go with our honey pine ceilings. I really don't like yellow undertones because they make ME look sallow. Would White Dove fit the bill?
Good! A video for real people. Thanks.
I like white board and batten accented with black exterior/white interior windows and wood accents perhaps stones wainscoting. Inside I plan on a natural stone fireplace and backsplash in the kitchen. Creamy white walls in the living room, color drenching bedrooms to make them dark and moody. I like large islands because we are not a dining room family. I hate accent walls unless it's perisian trims. White oak cabinets in the kitchen. Brushed brass pulls.
Love Bunny gray.
I really appreciated that you talked about using color instead of just talking about the color manufacturers "color of the year". Thanks for lots of great ideas! I do hope white will become a thing of the past. So many of us who have lived in rentals for decades are absolutely sick of white, white, white, bland, bland, bland. Sorry to see that too many people are still clinging to white - it's such a stark contrast to the saturated hues we're currently seeing, darker more intense colors look much better with darker trim colors. BTW, I've been renovating my home for the past 2.5 years and I'm happy to note that all my colors (which were chosen at the start of the project) are currently on trend, including umber brown woodwork as well as red accents in the entry and the recently painted brick red chairs in my kitchen.
Upstairs???? Nah.
Most people have a dual income household. Where are the designs with a home office and flex room that could function as a second office? We both work from home (one full time, one part time).
Should it be a neutral? I want something with more drama.
Choose what you like, not the trend. Nothing is absolutely timeless.
No grout or white tile behind a cooktop. No No No. You WILL retreat that grout. Also we have an OC house. Hated the kitchen mess being open. Yep, Ripped out our u shaped flat counter and raised the perimeter to bar height. Gained 70% more counter space and solved the exposed mess problem. we all love it so do guests. That flat island is a waste and will be a PITA after your third dinner.
I painted several rooms with large stencils. One in 2014 my girls bathroom because she would get hairspray on the wall. A closet before it was reshelved. I have a current one ready to go. Stencils have to be big to have a nice effect. No one realized it was a wallpaper stencil. Actually amazon and hobby lobby has some nice large stencils.
What color appliances go with this beige color- definitely not silver stainless
Glad I chose white windows 9 years ago. I figured most people want white
I'm having a hard time finding a blue that doesn't look purple. I was told to go to the gray side to eliminate any reds in the blue. My son picked up samples for me today and they still look purple. I don't understand it. I try it in the room light at night and the sun in the daytime. I'm 62 and never even bought a sample paint before and been happy with the colors. I don't understand why I'm having such a hard time with this room. I painted it a cool very light blue years ago and want to change the color to a more medium blue. Any help will be appreciated.
Try sw krypton or stardew.
@@homelikeyoumeanit I have the stardew sample and that looks very different than the sample in the room. I can try krypton next time I'm out. I tried a gray from BM and it looks gray/blue on my friend's wall and and ugly brown on mine. I have Meditative and so far it doesn't look purple. I'm waiting for a sunny day to see how it looks in natural light. Does that have any purple undertone? This is beyond frustrating. If you know of any other colors please let me know so I can pick them up if this doesn't work out. I truly appreciate any help. I went to 2 SW stores but they were young guys working there that just led me to the samples and walked away.
Thanks so much for this video What do you think of bm army green in a basement where there is very little to none natural light?
Sometimes less is more. And more is overkill. 😊
Nice low level updating - not inspirational for bigger more expensive homes
Hello! I love the room that has the tree wallpaper and green paint on the wood work. May I have the information on the wallpaper/ mural shown in the video and also the green paint color ? Thank you.
Trend increasing because more and more homes have flat ceilings, old fashioned popcorn can't be painted successfully.
Super bonito ❤youtube.com/@todoparamicasa5035?si=skFXEYIUf034XnWG
Way too many patterns in these homes. White framed widows are horrible, constantly cleaning. Dirt, bugs, fingerprints…especially with children. These ideas are very typical of USA fussiness in homes! Nothing in decorating is timeless. Times change, don’t go with trends, go with what you like and can stand for a period of time.
I disagree. I just watched another designer say grey is out. Stay with warm neutrals. Also white cabinets are also fading out.
How does one know what color is reflective in their home? My rooms don't get natural light. My light bulbs are usually about 2700 Kelvin. I have a small home too.
The paint chips/websites have that info.
"Trends' are never advisable to follow. They are 'temporary' and lack a consistent 'signature-style' and obviously also, longevity which evolves over time. Personally I would always go with this rule in the home be it paint or furniture.
I completely agree when it comes to hard finishes or things that are expensive to change. However, when it comes to your walls, have fun!
We are doing kitchen and bathroom at lake house. I have the bathroom samples but not all of the kitchen. We are leaving soon for 7 weeks What can I do?
I went for a deeper red sofa ages ago and never looked back. Lol. New place is going to have some black trim and doors also, esp in the living room with the red velvety sofa. (Softer white walls/ceiling). Plus my main large art/frame has a lot of the same deep red in it. With a black frame. 😬 At the old place, I mixed the red with turquoise which I also love with red. I love bold and dramatic. Lol. Bedroom. I think I’m going for a soft medium to light coral and muted turquoise/bluish teal. Bathroom walls. Gonna be high drama deep teal w sconces, deco mirrors, faux fur white rug. Decked out deco. Later maybe some stunning black and white floor tile. 😬 Kitchen cabinets. Some variation of the brighter medium blue/greens but not full on retro turquoise, but def not the drab “dirty” green.
I *think* what you're describing with "dirty" and "clean" colours is the degree of tone dilution. Colours can be pure full-strength hues - often found in children's crayons - or they can be diluted with white to make tints, black to make shades, or grey to make tones. A tint is visibly lighter than a pure hue, and a shade is visibly darker, but a tone can be lighter or darker or the same brightness. It's just less intensely colourful. Beside a tint, pure hue, or shade of the same total light reflectivity, a tone will look dull... or peaceful. If you choose a fairly simple set of base hues from traditional colour theory - complementary, split complementary, analogous, etc - and keep the overall brightness of your space balanced, you can get away with a lot of variation. I have cream walls and orange natural timber and beige curtains and dark brown stained timber, which are all tints tones and shades of orange, paired with blues from pastel to indigo and from quite intensely blue to honestly grey. Overall the effect is relaxed but not dreary, and cohesive without feeling rigid.
Painted my bedroom ceiling a soft mid-blue about a decade ago. Skirting boards and architraves to match. I still love it. We did the back bedroom walls and ceiling all in the same blue, and to my eye it's a bit dark, but my daughter likes a dark bedroom so that works fine for her too. I guess I was doing coloured ceilings and colour drenching a decade before the trend, but it worked just as well a decade ago as it does now.
Thank you for this video. Do you also help new build customers who have to choose their finishes in a design studio?
Yes! Send me an email- ashley@homelikeyoumeanit.com
I hate open concept layout for large spaces but love it for small spaces. My 960 sf 2 story townhouse condo has a very open layout living/kitchen/dining wide open and that keeps the rooms light
The problem with lofts is that the mess is always out there in front of you when you go upstairs. I prefer a playroom instead. Love all your idea. I totally agree about the white walls. We went with SW white Duck which is a creamy white and it is perfect
Which color was that Gray with Blue undertone? First image you shared for the outdated colors 😂
BM gray owl. Not outdated if you have furniture/decor/fixed elements that relate to it!
I painted 2 ceilings in color and now i am ready to repaint those rooms and will be repainting them white, i despise painting ceilings and having to cover up a colored ceiling requires a lot of painting. No more colored ceilings for me.
Look at base coat paint. Its really opaque so can go from dark colour to white in two coats.
Unless you have the budget to resand and poly hardwood floors, LVP is the way to go. It looks like hardwood these days. Waterproof, no scratches. Hardwood, whether real or refinished is hard to keep looking good unless you have no kids or dogs and want to have UV windows or shades. Polyurethane scratches and floors fade in sunlight. Scratched poly requires sanding old off and applying coats of new in between sandings. Sun bleached require that and staining.
Thanks for the very informative video! What are your favourite BM pale neutral tone colours?

How difficult is it to take out pencil tile and replace with subway tile. I have no experience
Not difficult for a professional, just costly and messy!
Open concept just means you have your kitchen in the same space as your living room.
Traditionally yes, but with a lot of new builds, most of the main floor is open space.
