Sony TAN-8550 VFET Power Amplifier Restoration and Overhaul
In this video, I walk through the entire restoration and repair process of this stunning Sony TAN-8550. This is the second video in a two part series which focuses on the Sony TAE-8450 preamplifier and this Sony TAN-8550 power amplifier.
This amplifier needed an extremely comprehensive restoration and overhaul to get it to function better than it was new, for decades to come. Almost every component inside of this amplifier was replaced to assure long term stability and efficiency. After it had been worked on by an idiot with zero respect or knowledge of how to restore a piece of gear properly, I had to undo damage done to many areas in this amplifier. Also done was a retrofit of a new IEC power inlet, as well as some very nice 5-way binding posts which were supplied by speaker-terminal.com/en/

Sony TAE-8450 High End Preamplifier Restoration
มุมมอง 14Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I completely restore a gorgeous Sony TAE-8450 Preamplifier. This is the first of a two part series, which will also include the venerable Sony TAN-8550 VFET power amplifier. This was a very fun piece to work on, as Sony made it as service-friendly as possible. Most of the circuit boards are modular, making removal and installation a piece of cake. The internal wiring is also as n...
Kyocera A-910 Integrated Amplifier Demo
มุมมอง 4.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Here is a quick demo of the visually and sonically stunning Kyocera A-910 integrated amplifier. I finished a very comprehensive restoration of this piece a little less than a year ago, and I figured it was time to share a video of it in action before selling. This is one of Kyocera's / Cybernet's statement pieces from the mid to late 80's, and it exudes quality from top to bottom. The gunmetal ...
Sansui AU-717 Integrated Amplifier Restoration
มุมมอง 179Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I tackle a beautiful Sansui AU-717 that was sent to me for restoration by @tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120. This was a very fun restoration, as the AU-717 was a treat to work on. Being a mostly modular design, all boards were very easy to remove and work on, enabling me to achieve a fine level of detail when reworking the amplifier. No stone was left unturned; everything from inte...
Kenwood L-07CII Preamplifier Restoration
มุมมอง 17Kปีที่แล้ว
Being the matching preamp to the L-07MII’s I recently restored, this L-07CII preamp received the same restoration treatment. Everything from input to output was overhauled, with no stones left unturned. I’m happy to have this video as a bookend for the L-07MII video as it completes the set. Sorry for the extremely long-format video… I tried to condense what was done down to a video that would b...
Sony TA-5650 VFET Amplifier Service and Restoration
มุมมอง 33Kปีที่แล้ว
Being the first VFET amplifier I’ve worked on, this Sony had a few issues that needed to be fixed. Added to the restoration that was also needed, it ended up being a very comprehensive task. VFET amplifiers are a rare breed, and require specialized care to get working properly. This Sony was no different. There are many modifications and service bulletins that were done to guarantee the stabili...

มุมมอง 35K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This cosmetically pristine Technics SE-A7 was the perfect candidate for a full blown restoration. Everything from the filter capacitors to the rear I/O was replaced, guaranteeing the reliability and usability of this amplifier for years to come. While nothing was broken or damaged, preventative maintenance like this will ensure the working condition and stability of this amplifier as long as it...

Nice tidy and impressive job. I got a AU5900 that I bought over 40 years ago. Bought it used from a good friend and never had a problem with it until my ex wife got her dirty fingers onto it. I since got it back but, not working and I need to find someone here in Melbourne, Australia who is qualified enough to restore it to its prime. Pity you're so far away.
excellent job, well done, keep going on. thx man.
$$$$$$ nice work.
top niveau restauration !!! félicitation !!!
... a friendly observation ... it is very hard to follow the video, you move the camera way too fast ... if you could slow down a bit, please ... otherwise, great work ...
Wow..what a job! Very nice! Very puntual! Big amp! It's new again. Owned a AU-719 (recapped)for years. Sounded nice, but..not better(for my ears) than the AU-317. Sold the AU-719, because of his size, weight. Don't have a big room(30m2), that's why. About 2 years ago i bought a restored AU-317(€200,-) and it plays everyday;often also all night at low volume(neighbours). And it don't get (too) warm either. I had a AU-317 many years ago(not restored, but sounded also nice, exterior was not so nice) , but yeah moving to another home, sold it. This one (exterior very nice, like new), i do not sell, sure!. I dare to bet, that it sounds even as good as a lot of modern amps. Maybe even better. Yes..no remote control, or dac of course. But i don't care. Sansui has a special, "full" sound. Has it a "tube"- sound??
😳🥺kamerayı sağa sola döndürmenizden başımız döndü, 🥴 sarhoş olmak üzereydimki çıktım kurtuldum neyseki, şükürler olsun.. kamera kullanmayı öğrenin önce siz !..😡🤬 ..
Great work and a NICE amp. What do you use to deflux the boards?
Just a tip, people often use a black marker to hide little scratches on black equipement.. I had good results with cold bluing, its easy and it perform very well
Beautiful amps excellent workmanship
What i would like to know is, what happens to a circuit when change an original capacitor...in this case, you went from 470uf to 1000uf, and from 33uf to 100uf. Im new diy, but I'm facing a battle with my marantz pm 94d and is impossible to find a 560uf audio cap. What would you recommend. Love your channel.
I wish you would be based in Europe
I love this bro
Really enjoy watching your videos, I wish I could have your setup
Please advise on the process for submitting my item for repair.
I noticed that you increased the value of various capacitors on various boards. I understand the logic on power supplies, but worry that some of the amplifier and preamplifier caps might be finely tuned? Do you have any insight on this? Fabulous work.
I'm going to put a high quality mains input plug on mine, and get rid of the feeble mains cord. The plug wires are to be fixed with screws. Should I tin them first? Anything else to look out for? Thanks in advance (ps. I'll be doing the same to my MX-1)
Brilliant Video . New Subscriber from Australia. When do you think a new video is coming .!!! Look forward to seeing your next work . Cheers.
A fellow L' imperatrice fan. Their vinyl sounds great in my hifi setup.
Thats what im currently interested in. Like restoring paint lettering decals in general. My Sansui AU 717 has damaged/faded lettering on the volume dial...
Great Video. I also collect audio and have some interesting items. At 10:07 I recognize the type of large wire connections Sony used straight away. They are arcade cabinet video game type known as " Jamma" interfaces. Wow I have never seen them used in an audio amplifier like this. I recognized them straight away as I also collect arcade and video game material. They normally connect to PCB arcade circuit boards including the RGB screen signals, The Horizontal and vertical SYNC , 5V and common and ground connectors plus a few more inside the video game arcade cabinets to the main pcb which was the actual game itself back in the Day. You can buy them very easily some fully wired up. Super Cool.
Congratulation very good Job .
What do you charge for this type of restoration ?
exquisite work my man. I love the videos, please keep making them
Side panels are made from a Zink based alloy (kind of Zamak).
magnifique conception du tres haut gamme
excellent
Connor, you certainly know your craft. I've never seen such meticulous, methodical acuity along with the tips and tricks knowledge base you have acquired. Where did you learn to understand electronics and read schematics? How many years have you been doing this? I have never seen this level of understanding, care, and unparalleled love in the repair and restoration of vintage electronics. You are an excellent instructor. I will continue to watch your well-made videos and learn from a true master electronics technician. Thank you.
How do You clean the faceplate? Also, can you show the actual process when you reflow and deflux a circuit board. Thank you.
que aparelho maravilhoso! que montagem!
Those traces remind me of the Tiawan made Atari 2600's .
Impresionante trabajo, es un gusto ver como aprecia las cosas bien hechas, con amor por los detalles .
The level meter is something out of this world, especially for today's standards! That preamp must have costed a fortune, at the time!
I believe you have stated that the L-07c was more difficult and problematic. I would love to hear more about that or a video about how that went. I have all the new caps to do the rebuild but after hearing about the traces I’m pretty scared to start that job. The L-05m went quite easy thank goodness.
Recently had mine re capped. £600 very well spent. Fantastic amplifier if you ask me. I use her to drive 2 pairs of leak sandwich 600 speakers
It's 23:30 here, and I know, I stay awake till 2 AM :) Great content!

UNBELIEVABLE AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL WORK!!! GREAT JOB 👍👍🎼🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶✨⚡⚡
Just noticed the Monster Power HTS 360 power conditioner. I have one on my home theatre setup. Bought it back in 2009. Living in North Texas with our electrical storms it was a now brained.
Beautiful work!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing 👍
Just laid my hands on one of these for not much $ - a real beauty of an amp. I'm a sucker for the low profile ones anyway, but other than a few rust spots on the case, the internals look low mileage and very clean. No discolored glue, offset as received at 1.5 and .5mv, and sounds just great. Not sure I want to touch it yet, but this video will be my guide for sure! Thanks!
Question, I have watched alot of your videos. When you say you polish the faceplates of the units what are you using to polish them? Thanks
I think you should reconsider using the AC inlet module as an AV outlet. It's not very safe....
Please excuse my curiosity but with all the parts you replaced, how much did this restoration cost? Amazing work sir. When I was in the USAF back in the late 70’s I worked in medical electronics and I was really interested in working on audio electronics but after my time in the USAF and working for a couple medical equipment manufacturers for a while I realized I didn’t have the temperament for it so I retrained into aircraft maintenance. After 23 years I retired and became fascinated with TH-cam sites like yours. You have a rare talent. Where did you get your training?
