Super! Very timely, as I just bought this pen! Thanks again.
@@GilbertRose-u1u hope you love it!
Thanks for this review, and thank you especially for using standard writing utensils in your size comparison!!! It has never made sense to me to compare a pen to pens that most people don't own...
Thank you! I fully agree. I try to always include these especially for people new to the hobby.
I own a black Skyline Sport (has silver trim and nib), but I don’t think I will get a Piston Sport. I have an inkling that this pen will largely appeal to those: A) Who want a piston filler from each major company (Pilot CH92, Lamy 2000, etc). B) Those who want one Kaweco, but want something unique that not everyone else owns. or, C) Kaweco Sport Collectors. Otherwise, this model may be a tough sell, though it’s much more competitively priced than the AL Piston Sport. Not including a clip does feel pinche, though.
I do think it has a fairly niche market. Personally I was drawn to it because I've found I prefer pocket pens on the go, but I also like a larger ink capacity so I don't have to worry about carrying cartridges/ink bottles.
I really want to own this pen but the size, particularly the grip area to too thin for my hands to use for a long writing session. I had a regular Sport but I let it go for this reason. If it was perhaps 2mm wider, I would jump at the opportunity.
@@paulmchugh1430 unfortunately it will be too small for some. Did you try holding it on the threads/barrel?
@ForTheLoveOfPens Yes, with the standard Sport. That is about how thick the grip should be.
@ there aren’t very many pocket pens with that thick of a grip section. Off the top of my head I’d suggest looking at the Opus 88 mini, but I haven’t personally tried one
@ForTheLoveOfPens I have been looking at the Gravitas pocket pen. It has a #6 nib with a semi-flex option.
I bought this version because I didn't want to spend about 150€ on an Al Piston in the first place. I love the way it works. And, for the use I make of it, the ink capacity is more than sufficient, much better than the classic small cartridge Sport. The Broad nib provides a splendid writing experience. Personally I would love to see a video about the Hongdian M2. Excellent video. I love the disassembly part in all your videos. It's really helpful. Thanks for your work.
@@JoseFbt6bk thank you so much! I have posted 2 reviews of the Hongidan M2 already, but the brass version is new. I don’t want to be too redundant… maybe I’ll do a short overview if there’s interest 😊
@ForTheLoveOfPens Sorry, I didn't notice. I'll watch those reviews.
@@JoseFbt6bk Here's a link to the latest one... th-cam.com/video/LHOerdLSfwY/w-d-xo.html
@ForTheLoveOfPens Thanks so much!
Great review. I also got the M2 “brass”. Love it.
@@ashzhu3085 thank you! Great little pen ❤️
I’ve yet to buy a Kaweco. Curious to hear how you like it.
Hopefully this video gave you an idea of my impressions...I summarize my overall views at 13:07
@ yes it does. I’m still not quite ready to get one. 😉🎄
Hi, nice "how to" video, just wondering, isn't that a lot of grease, and does that not influence the ink ?
@@KenVanderheyden thanks! I put on a good amount of grease in this video. Probably more than necessary, but after a few strokes, most of it just lubricates the side walls. You’re applying too much if you see clumps falling off into the ink.
I have the same pen and enjoy it. It’s a great fountain pen, especially considering the modest price. Re filling pens with oversized nibs from bottles with too-narrow mouths: I highly recommend getting an Ink Miser (a translucent one without filling holes on the sides of the funnel) and gluing the little pedestal to something (I used an acrylic block intended for stamping). I’ve yet to come across a pen that can’t be easily filled from the Miser. Transfer ink to and from the Miser with a pipette or ink syringe, or just pour it. By the way, another great pen from the same company that made the Hong Dian (or Hongdian - I’ve seen it both ways) A9 is the Asvine J16. It’s a perfectly balanced titanium piston-filler that comes with a silky smooth JoWo nib. It comes in either mirror or brushed finish; I recommend the brushed finish, which is not slippery. If you have not yet tried it, I highly recommend it. It’s even smoother and more comfortable than the A9.
@@catherinehubbard1167 great advice! I often resort to using an ink miser if I have an oversized pen or am just running low on ink. I also really like the J16, and actually reviewed it just the other week… th-cam.com/video/BiTrKvdGw5k/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much !!! History grad here so mechanical type stuff terrorizes us liberal arts grads. Got my TWSBI Eco full to the brim.
@@brianbentley5280 glad you found it useful!
I have the same pen inked with Noodler’s Southwest Sunset. It matches the pen beautifully and the shading is great! And I love the #8 nib.
@@pamelasnyder9745 that would be a great combination!
That vac filler was so cute...🎉
@@West2WesternGhats that’s the TWSBI Vac mini
I like Hongdian. They are well made and it’s nice that their designs are largely original - not clones of other brands designs.
Good to see that nib has some spring to it and that it’s not a steel nail. Very useful lesson on how to strip the pen down for cleaning, much appreciated. If it was a piston filler I would definitely get one, I still may.
@@MrAndrew1953 thank you! You may want to check out the N10, it’s largely similar but also has an internal piston
@ thanks for that. I like the nib on the A9 so I’ve ordered a green version.
@ hope you like it!
I own the exact same one. Really beautiful pen, huge nib, great writer. My issue is the pen is way to slippery, I can't use it. Agree with you on the seams.
I agree, Hongdian is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands! Do you find the body slippery? I found the black grip section soft and pretty secure in the hand
@@ForTheLoveOfPens Yeah, the body is way too slippery for me.I cleaned it and even try sanding down it a bit. Its such a great pen, right size for me, I wish I could use it more.
@@ForTheLoveOfPens I can't remember if the N10 had a metal section or not but the A9 is not and the grip is just fine.
@@paulmchugh1430 the N10 does have a metal grip section. I find the A9 comfortable and not slippery. But the body itself is fairly slick
I first had the N10 which was a good performer but the alignment of the wide lines on the cap and barrel never could be done. It really irked me. The A9 managed to do nicely, though I lost the piston filler which was a shame. My only complaint is the size of the converter. I wish the pen came with a larger converter like the Jinhao 9019 or 9016. The nib and feed are wonderful. Recent Hongdian nibs have been wonderful. Great review.
Im really impressed with Hongdian lately! I agree, a larger converter would’ve suited this pen well.
@ForTheLoveOfPens I thought about attempting to eyedropper fill the barrel but hesitant.
@@paulmchugh1430yeah I personally wouldn’t because of the metal threads.
New sub here, and wanted to thank you for making videos like this one, as well as inc links to the tools you use. I’ve seen several recommendations for those steel shims and no-one ever told me what they were!
@@runedart5048 welcome to the channel! I’m glad you find these useful
Pretty much covers it .👍
Thank you for your video. I have a Kaweco Piston Filler that I carry everywhere and I like it a lot. I was wondering if it was possible to disassemble the piston mechanism for cleaning but apparently that's not an option. Your method of cleaning the pen, therefore, is probably the best. Thanks again and happy holidays!
@@sailcat9 I’m in the process of filming the full review, in which I’ll show disassembling in more detail. There are flats at the bottom of the threads for the blind cap, but I haven’t yet found a tool that can grasp them securely.
Can you tell us the name of the syringe filler because the link shows another one it probably shows Asvine syringe. 0:51
@@ALI_AB24 They don’t seem to have a common name or regular listing, so I linked a similar (but smaller) syringe in the description. You can try searching “fanmu syringe” Also here’s a link to a current listing. a.co/d/7guNKbI
@@ForTheLoveOfPens thanks a lot my friend
Lovely. Thanks very much for this video.
I bought one of these purporting to be “brand new” on eBay, but inside the barrel near the top (opposite end of nib), slight dark smudging that must be ink. Can this be from the factory? Or can I assume someone bought it and tried it out and tried to resell it as “new”?
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn if it’s just on the feed (black plastic behind the nib) this could be from the factory. Many companies dip test their pens to make sure they are writing properly
@@ForTheLoveOfPens in the barrel by the opposite end of the pen from the feed. Thanks so so so much for the reply!!!!!
@ personally I would be suspicious that it was inked
@@ForTheLoveOfPens thanks thanks thanks!!!!!! Your reply is spectacularly appreciated!!! So extremely kind of you!!
I have this fountain pen on my Christmas wish list. It will be a great addition to my other Kaweco Sport fountain pens.
Is the body material same as the one used in the cartridege version of the Kaweco classic sport?
@@RD42195 yes, it seems to be the same type of resin. Maybe ABS
I only have one Kaweco Sport, but this looks mighty tempting, especially to have as a pocket German piston filler counterpart to something larger like a Lamy 2000, Pelican M600/M800, or a Montblanc 146. Happy belated birthday. Also, what brand of loose leaf paper do you use for your writing samples?
@@chi-towncalifornia5916 thank you! I agree, I have found over time that I tend to prefer compact pens with a large ink supply. A combination that isn’t very common. Paper wise, I tend to just use fountain pen friendly copy paper in most videos. Ones that don’t absorb ink quickly. If I’m having trouble with feathering on especially wet writers, I swap in clairefontaine triomphe.
It seems very easy to disassemble. I have to ask if the piston can also be removed for maintenance. I am still on the fence about getting one. The section is thin. I wish Kaweco took the opportunity to make a larger version. I may opt for the Hong Dian N2.
@@paulmchugh1430 there are flats at the bottom of the piston knob, but I haven’t found a tool that can get a good grasp on them.
Looking forward to the review.
I’ve been mulling over the J16, but I’m on the fence about whether I want the Medium or Fine size nib. For reference, I mostly write with Japanese fine mediums and mediums.
@@chi-towncalifornia5916 which Japanese brands are you used to?
I just use a syringe with a blunt needle to flush out an empty cartridge with water then use that same syringe+needle to refill the cartridge with my ink of choice. Pretty much the best way I have found to work with pocket pens.
@@GordonTillmanTexas same here! Kaweco did just release a converter compatible with this model, but you get about half the capacity as a standard cartridge
Me too!
How you got SFM nib with 823? it's not standard combination
@@awaken77 I swapped it in from a Custom 743, they use the same nib size
This pen has joined my list of always inked since getting.. its a joy to write with in broad, silky smooth and a nice amount of ink on the paper. I really enjoy writing with it. Asvine; if you are watching this, I wouldn't be unhappy if you sent me the J16. 😊
I can't decide between the Carène and m400 can you help me decide
@@ayda2876 they are really pretty different models. What draws you to them? The M400 is lighter weight with a larger ink capacity and a softer nib.
@@ForTheLoveOfPens i love both for their designs and both seem to be very smooth
The J16 has been an EDC since I acquired it a month ago. I do agree that a clear ink window would have been better the the smoke colored one, and I wish the Asvine ink windows would be larger. While many of my pens have rounded finials, it would be nice to see a version of J16 with flat finials. Especially if they added jewels to the finials.
@@johndevault9030 I agree!
I didnt pull the trigger thinking that it will be slippery in hand.
@@santauxia not for me, it’s much grippier than a chrome section

I’m not sure for India. In the USA I see it on Amazon (link in description), Etsy, AliExpress and eBay
I have this on my bucket list to get. I mentioned it to my kids and they said it was too plain. Pity.
@@paulmchugh1430 I’d say more subtle than plain 😊
