    I thought about this, and your modeling assumes a 100% efficient 49:1 UNUN. Which won’t be the case, especially on 12m & 10m with the typical 240-43 based UNUN. They are only ~72% efficient range at higher frequencies . The 1/4 wave MAY be better on those bands? Some of your newer torroids you have wound seem to be much better on 10 & 12m.

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Correct. This was well before I started testing transformer efficiency. Swap this out for a 3 stack of 240-52 Autotransformer.

  • @billryland6199
    @billryland6199 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I switched to using 2 FT240-43 cores in my 49:1 UNUNs. They seem to work better with lower SWRs than a single core. I only run 100 watts. The primary and secondary windings are separate for no common mode current in the coax.

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ideal. I did try splitting the wires but didn't notice any difference.

  • @firstreactor8983
    @firstreactor8983 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks for the excellent idea and implementation! Two quick questions: 1. How do you make a good connection from the antenna wire on the reel to the transformer? 2. Have you tried this with braided bare copper or tinned copper? If so, are the results better. Thanks again. Tony KE1TLG

      Heres the video you need th-cam.com/video/hRojpHO9ak0/w-d-xo.html On alternate wire. Its difficult to source what you mentioned and when it oxidises it forms a level of insulation which stops it working as it should.

  • @LarrySavage-no4lk
    @LarrySavage-no4lk 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The issue is indeed transformer inefficiency. At 1500 watts and the typical efficiencies of these transformers you will generate approx. 300 watts of heat. Place these transformers in a plastic enclosure, without cooling, and they will surely fail if high duty cycle modes are used. Unless you can keep the heat generated to low levels or add cooling and limit duty cycles these transforms are not reliable. The military immerses this type of transformer in a coolant oil and use a metal enclosure to dissipate the heat. With the typical efficiencies of these EFHW transformers (80% range) It does not matter how many cores you use in the transformer. More cores will just increase the time it takes to heat up to the point of transformer circuit or enclosure damage.

    Thanks Colin. Great videos. Yesterday I built the 56:1 wide wound on the 1002 and I just tested and trimmed the radiator. I'd be so grateful if you would comment on these results because I'm wondering if I should change it to 49:1. I used 1mm enamel wire on the toroid and 18g on the 67' radiator. SWR dipped to lowest at 6.830, 14.050, 21.150 and 28.100. 6.830 got 1.0:1. 7.050 got 1.4:1. 28.100 only dipped to 1.9. What do you think? Thanks, Scott in NC

    Great video! I just got ten of these toroids in from Mouser.. cost me like 63 dollars. Also got some TDK 100pf caps. I am going the autotransformer route... the efficiency looks good 160-10. Now I just need to 3D print something to mount them on. I have quite a few 240-43 toroids but have decided to not use them as I don't run more than 100w anyway.. may make up some stacks of three 240-43 just to see how they test out compared to these nicer toroids..
