  • *** I've noticed an error in the video. Early in the video I roll in some B roll which was meant to show the offending item and not the "good one" from the Corsair website. The one at fault in my case is the Corsair CV650 ****
An overview of my recent computer purchase with a serious issue which made my radio unusable.
This was the offending item in my case. Your one may be fine.

This is the replacement which is totally RF quiet.

Hi Colin. Its a big issue regarding EMC and interference. I will produce a video showing what I have found out regarding my inference noise problems. I will send you the link. Cheers from old George. My latest upload 28th February. G1BKI

Yeah its terrible and not going to get any better for us unless we live on our own away from civilization.

yeap. Collin I totally agree. This was one reason I sold my desktop Pc and bought a powerful Mini PC with a shielded case and external power brick.Running everything though through a APC ups battery run. Quiet as a butterfly :-) 73

Congratuations on getting this fixed. My current problem is with 19 and 22 inch LCD monitors that I have. They all generate RFI in terms of blocks of noise and close spaced carriers. It seems to radiate from the panel itself. Any idea on how to suppress this ? I found that wrapping in chicken wire solves the problem but it is not really a practical solution ;-) I have gone over to using laptops as they seem much quieter in terms of EMC.

Never had issues with monitors. Just glad i got it resolved.

I sold computer systems that were built by a custom builder to my customers that were mostly used for personal use. The company offered an economy line of PC units I decided to give a try. The customer called and complained about RF noise in their AM broadcast radio when they tried to listen to the baseball game if the computer was running. I replaced the power supply with a different model and it took care of any noise. The offending power supply was almost half the weight of the replacement unit and the circuit board was about half the size.

That's interesting. Sounds like a lot of cut corners.

Great information! Operating any device along the linear slope of its curve is always better than pushing it too hard into the high end close to the knee and if your requirements are considerably lower than its highest rating is, you're in an ideal situation. Thanks for sharing!

I use an old server power supply (Astec DS550-3) to power my radio, no issues with noise. Solar power inverters seem to be the big noise offenders where I live.

Had the same issue and if you had a waterfall on your rig you would spot it right across the band, mine was really bad on 10M. My wife was using a bequiet 550 bronze psu I had a Seasonic gold 600 psu, it was the bequiet causing the problems. I upgraded to a Seasonic 700 gold problem solved.

I did see it on my 705 That I was using as a sniffer. Interesting to know the BeQuiet was noisy too.

My CCTV night vision stopped working and on contacting the company, they said that it was the power supply. I bought a new one and yes, when I turned on the radio massive interference. I didn't put two and two together at first but I got the light bulb moment in the middle of the night and on turning off the CCTV the problem went away. So I got a different power supply and everything is OK but I suppose not many people would even think of RF being generated by an appliance. . .

I used to have a drawing tablet that would throw up big RFI every hundred hertz or so across 20m. You never know quite what's going to clear up when you start turning off everything in your environment!

Had a similar problem with a HP laptop I was given. It had an aftermarket power supply that caused lots of RFI. I was able to swap it for a genuine HP supply and the problem disappeared.

Glad you got things worked out! I've been gathering parts for a new PC build and ordered a Gold rated Corsair RM series PSU due to reports of reliability and the companies Excellent Warranty. I also ordered a quiet case without a window for better shielding and minimal sound from fans. Hope to get it working soon.
I'm an Old School, Analog only PS for my rigs guy to keep Hash away.

nice one colin. I used to have a really expensive computer system, and had nothing but problems in the shack. Then I spoke to a ham radio guy who had a computer shop. Ended up with the cheapest computer you could imagined, no more problems hi hi. But generally many electronic companies do not understand rfi. I did a wee video about my original computer and rfi on my radio, sent it to the company, and I was fully compensated. 73 mate. Look forward to seeing on the beach again soon, love those videos.

Thanks mate. I'm just glad its sorted. its good you got an understanding person with your problem. My radio was just unusable in the shack. On a different topic, I missed out on the great morning grey line on Saturday morn. Tried Roly ZL1BQD on Sunday morning when condx not as good, he heard me 559 but I could barely make him out. Sods law this morning when I'm back at work he said condx were great into UK. This coming weekend hopefully I can try again. Cheers, 73.

Well that’s a story to keep in mind. As most have a computer linked to radio operations I think if I’m going to get one I will be telling them what environment it will be working in and is it RFI / EMC compliant and I want it in writing if they say yes. We have enough to put up with all the crap from solar/ air conditioning/ fairy lights/ kids toys and all the other cheap stuff people use in the house without a care or concern for the likes of us. I’m pleased you found it so quickly and eventually got it sorted with the computer builders ✅ well done on that.💎

I have a monitor that all the sudden went nuts with RF noise, before that a laptop power supply was shorting and threw up a bunch of noise all over a few bands. A neighbor across the streets electrical box was shorting and wiped all of HF for a few days. Stuff just happens sometimes. 🤷‍♂️

      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

No, because my contract was with the builder. I had to go through them. its up to them to take this up with Corsair. They wouldn't let my try a range of PSU's for free either I bet.

Glad you got it resolved, to be honest there is no downside to having a larger power supply than you need. Like many of the other commenters the only computer directly connected to my ham gear is a headless Raspberry Pi. Switch mode supplies get a lot of bad press for RFI but well designed ones can be very good, of course many flagship HF rigs have them internally. 73
