The Taproot Soul – a powerful meditation for inner strength, clarity and realness
Are you sitting comfortably?
A while back, I made a video about the three colours of friendship, which was _really_ about the importance of authenticity and how we can only know who - out of all our friends, other contacts and even family members - is someone we actually want in our lives if we are our authentic selves when around them.
_In other words, only if we refuse to stretch, mask or contort ourselves in order to fit the shape we think they want us to be in._
Because if we do that, the simple fact of the matter is that they haven't met us yet. So how could we possibly know if that spark is there?
You can catch the original video here if you want: th-cam.com/video/Bemv9C9IONU/w-d-xo.html
The importance of being real around others is something I feel strongly about. But it's not necessarily as easy in practice as it might sound, because it's hard to know our authentic selves, and even harder to ensure that we stay tapped into that sense of genuineness when under the constant pressure of societal standards, the expectations of those around us, and from the powerful unconscious sway of our emotions, too.
I wanted to make this video to explore the question of authenticity in a little more detail. I really hope you enjoy it.

I think my comment got deleted for some reason but anyways... I recommend Sir Gibbie by George MacDonald for a book that breaks a lot of rules for a Christian book. George MacDonald I think believed in an androgynous God. The way he portrayed a certain angel like character in the princess and the goblin and the princess and curdie books was almost an allegory for Jesus... But she was female.
@@alternimousdimension Ooh! That sounds brilliant! I didn’t delete your comment, btw! (At least, not knowingly!)
@@Betwixt_App It must have not posted due to my internet... It's ok. 😊 I also originally wrote that I've always wanted to write a story that would change the world and would inspire people to see things differently. I never really knew how to do that though, but now I'm starting to understand more about how to do that. I want to see more films, books, video games that tell these stories. I firmly believe that story rules the world, and right now our stories are very stagnant and aren't helping to inspire positive change. Thanks for your videos as always, among a few other folks I watch your what's helping me to grow daily into a better writer and a better reader too!
Your voice is a pleasure to listen to, I sincerely hope you'll do more guided meditations! Cheers
Thank you! And I definitely will. There aren’t any in the next batch of 16 (which has already been recorded) but I’ll be sure to write some for the following batch.
I’m an artist who paints trees, often seeing them as metaphor for us all. A way to depict the human spirit. Each magnificent example a symbol of perspicacity, determination and survival. Despite hardship, despite tragedy, or environment or aloneness. The trees endure as do we. They find a way. Some create magnificent shade and habitat for other creatures, others connect via mycelium to create a network. All are a work in progress, as are we.
Yes, that’s so beautiful. They’re just the perfect metaphor. Pure magic 🖤
As a late-diagnosed autistic person who is a bilingual teacher (you can inagine why that’s relevant) this resonated a bit too much, which is good.
I’m so glad it made sense for you! 🖤
Thank for this. I've recently returned to live in the town of my birth, but I've been wondering if I'd made a mistake. When I did this meditation I felt a wonderful sense of belonging. I am in the right place, at the right time. This may have been a "physic" experience, but the physic experience was there too. This is who I am. My truth.
Oh, this is so wonderful to read!! Also, I imagine that’s a typo in your first line but “toe of my birth” felt weirdly apt! I wondered if it was a phrase I didn’t know at first 😂
@Betwixt_App thanks, I'll edit it!
I wasn’t suggesting you should! I quite liked it. I think we should see if we can establish it as a phrase 😂

Ahhhh yes. My Shadow is my friend. Keep your enemy close as they say. Immensely powerful inner dark energy. He offers balance. We just very recently danced together again when I abused alcohol as a form of escapism and resentment. And I listened and he sang the same old song. So that's back in its box. My absolute favourite most empowering life experience has been slow intimate dancing with my shadow. Thankyou for bringing to light 😊 this very deeply meaningful part of life. 🙏💪🔥
The tree as metaphor for the "myself" has always held a positive position of power in my mind. Id never thought on the tree roots however. Wonderful connection, thankyou. If i apply my aging and health perspective it becomes obvious i need to fertilise. The metaphorical earth around me has many areas of nutrient depletion. My tap root is strong but id better deep dive on this to check. I could definitely apply nutrition to that deepest of foundations with only positive effects im sure. I very much enjoyed the gentleness and slower cadence you employed in this video. If offered the opportunity to listen more actively. 🙏💪🔥
I wanted to make this one more meditative. When our editor sent this through to proof last week, I swear I almost fell asleep watching it 😂 I most definitely hypnotised myself. I’ll have a think about some other mediations for future videos. There wasn’t anything like this is the last back of 16 however. They’ll begin next week 🖤
@Betwixt_App well I'm sure you're very busy. Appreciate the effort, it really shines through in the quality of your work. Humble thanks 🙏

Yes, it takes a _lot_ of work!! 🖤
Thank you for making this video, I watched it. I know it is helpful for a seemingly unsolveable problem.
I already imaginary visualize this in my daily practices through on qi gong meditations and what was very helpful for me is seeing the growth sets of roots also in trying to reach out to new ones like if there are tiny little ones and if you're hitting a rock that the roots are growing round them and what didn't appear in first it may give you a stronger standing later on if you are under some circumstances or conditions it helps developing a stronger sense for being if you know how to still grow around a stone or on a falling edge or anything like this what might show up like in nature too
I love that!! What a brilliant use of active visualisation 🖤
@Betwixt_App to me it kind of appears like a form of trust net and gives warm and tender groundedness to the day I can in several situations just think of or for others too to develope that feeling even without the skill technique and there other form of travelling pathes like in if you're travelling and getting guidance through someone you met or surrounders and even if you try to understand someone better to see or imagine the way behind or beyond sometimes I even exchange recipes while I cook with others or special techniques and I sometimes even learned from others that weren't appearing in my personal eye view or om the near but even then it's necessary what you do for them and what they do for like having a good ghost around and focus on that you can even find a quiet calm in different forms of living beings but dreaming of and I often experienced this in the way that people where dreaming of myself also and I was often like driven by forces when dangers appeared to my beloved ones and could sometimes even without being there embodied help on situations to some this occured as bizarre but I had many ways and forms developed to minimize threats and dangers that I was able to handle but in some ways sometimes it wasn't possible for me because of a lack of knowledge on that and it's really very important to do with best intentions up on long time the knowledge around it seemed gone for me but in nowadays I mention the people vibes or energy in their environments and it's like having contact in physical
feels like I have no taproot
Oh, but I’m sure you do! It’s okay to need to work at it a bit before it feels tangible 🖤
So helpful thank you ❤
So glad, and thank you!
Hazel do you have any advice on how we deal with the atrocities going on in the world? I find feeling okay in the world is challenging because of the suffering of others. I think that might be my biggest challenge. I’ve experienced a lot of adversity ( to say the least) from my very beginning and I find it difficult to be okay in this world considering the suffering of others, and I feel that turning a blind eye is not okay. Maybe you have already shared something to help with that, if so maybe you can provide the link.
This is such a good question, and not an easy one to answer. I think the solution lies in balance and (sorry to say the dreaded B-word) boundaries. I fully agree that "turning a blind eye" isn't the right approach, but finding oneself overwhelmed to the point of sickness by the emotions and hardships of others obviously isn't all that helpful to anyone, either. So, there needs to be some middle ground. How we each achieve this will probably be different. If we know the people with whom we're empathising, then getting clear on how much we can healthily engage with or think about them will be required. No matter how we set these boundaries, they will likely be hard on both us and the other(s), so it's a real challenge. If we are empathising with the world at large, then I think boundaries around news consumption is a good idea: do we limit exposure to a certain time or day, or to a certain publication? etc. And I think one of the "magic questions" I wrote about in my book is pertinent here. It's very simple: *"Is there anything I can do about this right now?"* If the answer is "no", then the concern we're focused on is fulfilling no purpose beyond self-destruction. In those situations (and most of the time "no" is the answer), we need to practice our right and ability to let the worry go. It's serving no one. If the answer is "yes", however, then we do the thing. Once we start living that way for a while, our mental resilience can improve greatly because we get in a habit of discerning between "healthy/productive worry" and pointless catastrophisation, rumination, etc. Note, the question asks if there's anything we can do _right now_, which means that (usually) worries at night, even ones we have to action, will still get a "no". Also, just because I _could_ decide to leave home and hitchhike to some faraway land to volunteer as a charity worker, doesn't mean that would get a "yes". We need to align our answers with the life we have chosen for ourselves and our self-care. I really hope that helps! And I will make a video out of this at some stage, thanks for the reminder!
@@Betwixt_App ❤
If I have to fake it to get along with someone, that's not a friend: it's a coworker, a neighbour, even a family member. I don't involve myself with people if I feel like I can't be myself around them. You choose your real friends and try to be nice to the rest of the people who just happen to be in your life. So yeah, most of my friends are green 😊

I have an idea for a story, it begins... Once upon a time, there was a former therapist, author and creator of the mental health game, Betwixt, who's name was Hazel Gale, that's what I've got so far, I've got to do some more research on it yet!
The Hunger Games is a Heroine’s Journey story, which is a very intentional diversion from the Hero’s Journey. It starts off with the heroine basically doing the Hero’s Journey: she’s got the call to action, she’s a Chosen One, she behaves in ways that aren’t traditionally feminine (and in the case of Katniss Everdeen, views feminine things as someone else’s skillset, not her own). But she quickly realizes that this path of having to carry everyone’s expectations of the hero is destroying her. She’s too aware now that heroism isn’t glorious; it’s lonely and traumatizing, it’s too much pressure for one person to wield. She begins to question what she wants rather than just doing what a hero ought to do, and starts a path of self-discovery to find a way forward that feels authentic. I think there are some great lessons in the Hunger Games not just for women, but also for men about the alienation that the pressure to be the hero leads to.
Outstanding quality content as always! Unfortunately, most people live with a fabricated self-image, shaped by mental models inherited from parents, society, religion, and more. They never come close to discovering their true Self. Their "Daimon" remains unfulfilled due to external manipulations that prevent self-realization. As those embodying the Mage archetype know, we cannot change others' paths. We can only offer a glimpse of opportunity-an invitation to reflect and reconsider-but ultimately, people must choose their own way. Few understand that knowing oneself is not a process of ascension but rather a descent into the depths of inner darkness (as illustrated by Dante), where all our beliefs become blurred and are challenged. Pain is an essential part of this journey, for the metaphorical monsters we encounter in the shadows often transform into powerful allies, supporting our growth. For anyone curious about the Shadow archetype, I highly recommend Meeting the Shadow: The Hidden Power of the Dark Side of Human Nature. Thank you for what you do!
Appreciate the challenge you’ve shared - And how it helps to shine a light on my truth and vulnerability. Thank you 🙏🏼
Is it possible to accept your shadow yet still not wanna be around people who allow their shadow to take the wheel too much and deny its existance?
Ok i love your posts as much as anyone here, but you've lost me a little at the matriarchal society. I quick google search points out there there was actually "no evidence that Catalhoyuk was a matriarchal society", however it was "a place where gender equality flourished". Edit: you do mention that it's disputed... but considering the evidence, it's probably best to lead with the most likely scenario first. Female rulers have held power throughout history, and their purity and wisdom has been idolised cross-culturally, but there is basically zero examples of true female-led societies since the responsibility of safety fell upon the male cohort.
Gasp you covered one of my favorite books! Oh joy! I will definetly be trying this out. Caught a glimpse of my shadow even as i started to craft my comment in a way that would keep me from getting attacked. I dont think thats the first thing that should come to mind when i want to share my thoughts lol but i havent noticed it often before.
Ooh! “Romancing the Shadow” or “A Picture of Dorian Gray”? (Both excellent, though in very different ways 😂) 🖤
@@Betwixt_App Oh yeah oops, Picture of Dorian Grey is one of my favorite stories. I'm also a fan of 'the yellow wallpaper'. I've never heard of the other book but it is in my Christmas list now! 😁
This is very helpfull, be assured. At the end of this self-knowing process, could it be possible that we don't exist as we think we do ? " What was your face before you were born ? " is a koan they ask in Zen. Can't wait to take the mask off... Many thanks for your presence, sister. Be well. Warmest Regard to you all.
I don’t think it’s possible to perceive ourselves as we really are (nor to know what that could mean, as this Zen question implies). But I do think we can get closer to an accurate self-perception - at least in terms of how others see us, what we truly value/need/believe, and how we interact with the world - with shadow work and other forms of self-reflection 🖤
Reflection is both key and lock. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind’s journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul’s fate revealed. In time, all points converge, hope’s strength resteeled. But to earn final peace at the universe’s endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ --Diamond Dragons (series)

I've been fighting this little bastard for many years... and i just lost another battle about a week ago. But then again, it's in the losses that we learn the most... I hate passive agressive and indirect sh1t, so when people act like that I try to do the oposite approach in response, but I fell in their (and at times my) ways again... such cowardice 😖😡 but I'll keep trying to not let my answers be dictated by others...
It’s so brilliant that you’re aware of this, though. It puts you streets ahead of most of us. And it’s always a long old process, right?
@Betwixt_App yep, that's for sure
I went through trama greif. My facade fell away leaving me naked. I have since grown into a beutifull butterfly.

I love you! I accept and embrace aging and death, but I certainly embrace ethical methods to enlarge my longevity and extend my lifespan for as much as possible so to enjoy all the possible experiences this amazing life has to offer.
Thank you! And I love this comment! 🤩
@Betwixt_App Thanks! So glad!
i’m loving the video, though truly i disagree completely that traits you dislike in others are part of your shadow. my parents were abusive, my father particular so but my mother had some truly horrific moments as well. i do like these traits in them, and it does not mean that I am an abuser. that is a completely different thing. i think this line of thinking needs more nuance.
Oh, I totally understand, and the concept of projection doesn’t mean that we’d all express shadow content in the same way. The behaviours aren’t the focus, so much as what lies beneath them. So, if we struggle to witness selfishness in someone else, then that implies that we resist selfishness in ourselves. This could actually mean that we go out of our way to never, ever display selfishness, so it still wouldn’t mean that we’re necessarily “selfish people”, just that selfishness is unacceptable to us and therefore a blind spot.
Thank you, as always, coach
Haha! And you’re welcome, as always 🖤
I wasnt able to meet my shadow until i recognized my trauma from an ASPD (psychopathic,) father . But as ive been healing seeing all of that has been an amazing gift. I still have alot of insecurities but i am more at peace with who i am. It had been a struggle creatively because there's ideas i wont indulge anymore but it has also deepened my writing. And i think i got an idea from this video! ❤ Thank you for all that you do.
I’m so, so glad you were able to work through that. Huge congratulations. This is no small thing (as you clearly know). And I’m thrilled to hear that this process has helped your writing as well as your self-connection. Good luck with the new idea! 🖤
I don’t know if you’ve heard of a series of video games called Alan Wake, but they- particularly the second game-seem to illustrate pretty concisely the shadow work process. In short: the main character wanders an otherworld called the Dark Place (called the Sea of Night by others) and confronts the dark half of himself in order to escape it. I’ve been a little obsessed with the game since playing it seven months ago, and it- along with other resources, including your videos- have helped me contend with the shadow work in my own life. It’s hardly begun, but I wanted to thank you for what you’re doing and the resources and information you’re providing.
I haven’t heard of it, but it sounds amazing! Which platform are you playing it on? And I’m so glad to have played a little part in your shadow work journey! Thank you so much for letting me know. I’ll be interested to hear how you get on 🖤🖤🖤
@ I’ve been playing on PC, but they’re also on Xbox and PlayStation. The games are incredible and there’s a lot of overlap with your videos: archetypes, the Shadow as a Dark Presence, Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey (the main character is a writer whose in-game manuscripts are titled “Departure”, “Initiation”, and “Return”) Having your content and these games really crop up in my life about the same has been a little like living in a house full of locked rooms and hundreds of keys, then finding a cross-reference index to help figure which keys open which doors so I can finally find my way around.
really love this thank you so much
Thanks! And you’re welcome :-)
I wrote "You are not alone, you are loved, you are going to be okay. Right now, you don't feel okay and feel misunderstood and alone. THIS is a moment. You will get through this....the confusion and difficulty do not define you. You are needed, useful, smart, a beautiful soul who is navigating through some challenging stormy waters. You're scared. Don't let this fear tell you what your destiny will be. It's okay. Breathe. Feel. Breathe again. Cry the tears you need to cry. Now get up. Express your move forward, your next step."
my greatest breakthrough for psychological courage was that i always have a Choice. when about to commit suicide because i thought the world would be better off without me, i knew i have to change or die. change was so scary i almost took that path. then i realised i always have the choice - i can die at any time, so might as well try to change and see what happens. crazy scary at times, but then i kind of got addicted to listening to that damn universe lol
Oh, I’m so, so glad you had that realisation! And what a beautifully simple act of empowerment that was. Wonderful 🖤
I hadn't thought about psychological courage. What a helpful thought! Facing my shadow is scary, how can I survive and thrive when I am both incompetent and undeserving?
I think that’s exactly how we all feel (in our own way) when facing this stuff 🖤
Self-compassion allows me to accept the shadow parts of myself of which I was previously too appalled to be aware.
Self-compassion is everything 🖤
Reflection is everything. Unfortunately, very few humans are capable of it. In most cases, they're discouraged from developing the skill due to having coin, connections, crews, clout, computer code, control, corporate communities, and opulent opportunities. As long as one has those things, absolutely no Reflection is necessary; you "fail forward" upon every action no matter how destructive or deleterious it may be. 💪😎✌️ And THAT... is *power.* 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end.
I am waking up to what I do.
These kinds of insights have really been helpful in my recovery from lifelong cycles of depression. Good counseling and a great deal of persistence and hard work have helped me learn to acknowledge and accept my shadow self with more compassion and self gentleness, which helps me remain open to these new ways of seeing myself. Truly amazing insights along the way have really made my life so much more fulfilling and rewarding. It’s the little things, really, that fascinate me most. Kind of a relief to be able to find those moments of mundane delight throughout my days, they make the ordinary struggles feel a bit less futile. Thank you again for sharing your insights. These peaceful meditations are a nice way to encourage myself to keep exploring for bits of new awareness. Making it a regular habit truly helps the process.
This is such a beautiful description of the process. It really is the subtle things that matter. I think people consider this type of work and anticipate a big, difficult uphill struggle. But the reality of it is far more organic. Change happens slowly, over time, and often without us even realising it's taking place... until, at some point, we look back and realise how much we've changed.
