Dino's Tinker Shed

There is a saying that goes something like, "the only thing worse than not knowing something is knowing a little bit". This can lead to disaster or in a lot of cases, it can start you on a path of learning and experience. I've spent my life learning from others and taking an interest in just about anything you can do with your hands.
On this channel we will spend time "tinkering" in and around the tool shed on things that interest me, my friends and family. Along the way Ill do my best to pass on any knowledge I have on the subjects of the day and hopefully become a resource for you the people in your life.
I look forward to spending some time together in; the tinker shed.

I change the sprocket on my DR650, what gearing will I prefer?
Dino’s Tinker Shed, S4, Ep17, Suzuki DR650, what gearing will I prefer?
In this episode, I will change the final drive gearing from a 14-tooth front sprocket to a 15-tooth. I am going to do this to see if it will lower the rpms at highway speeds enough that the bike is not so “buzzy”. We also get a visit from Karl who comes along for the test ride.
I know I am long winded so please, use the time codes below to skip around.

Excellent job, I thought this video was very informative and very well put together. Seems like a great helmet for those of us that wear glasses. But since I do more off trail back country mountain riding I'm afraid it may not vent enough for an active rider. It would be great to see you do a review on both the ckx mission and titan helmets. I myself em leaning towards the ckx Titan with the heated goggles, along with a battery pack so I don't have a cord running down to the sled.
This series has been a pleasure to watch and so well done!!!

@@Skidmate thank you guys, I always like putting squirrels in as a bit of a hello to you both lol.
Very informative. Took my dr for it's first service and they clearly didn't adjust the chain. Needless to say I will be maintaining my bike from here on .
Hey Dino I was wondering if the last video you made on the pro cycle jet kit was your final setting for the jet and air box. I don’t want to cut holes in the box and then repent😅
Very good movie, thank you !
I love your videos - so calm and thorough. I just bought a DR, and the 15 tooth sprocket seemed too low to me. I set it to 14 but haven't driven it yet. Considering that I prefer the single track, I think I'll like it. Thanks for the video!
This video is priceless and will help a lot of people for many years to come.
Great video Dino! As a fellow DR and Vstrom owner, Id love to see some comparisons between your and Carls bikes. 🙂
Is the 14 tooth better for rid8ng 2 up around town?
I never would have tried that on plastic, thanks for the video
I absolutely hate the chain adjuster cam on the DR. I find it to be difficult to set. I have the stock 15 tooth on my bike and run it up to 70 MPH on the freeways regularly with no perceived issues. Thanks for this video!

Originally I wasn’t going to mod my engine at all. But. After riding for a while the idle will increase noticeably. Also the bike will annoy by backfiring every time I shut off the engine. Will the Pro cycle kit fix it?
@ibicycle8974 I hate to say it, but although the procycle will help, the simple carburetor on the dr will always require some periodic adjustment depending on temperature and altitude. Mine ran fine in the summer, but this fall with co Der temps it's idle is poor, and it's back firing a bit. The advantage of the jet kit is it allows you to tune most of it out relatively easy. Just make sure your bike is well warmed up before you adjust it or it will be frustrating when it does come up to operating temperature
Great video, it answers a few questions I had. Perfect timing. Thanks.
Sir, I have to replace a broken rear swing arm on a 2017 DR650. Do you know if prior 2017 swing arms are compatible with 2017 and on? New OEM swingarm $1500USD
@carlmaruyama6863 I just cross checked the 2017 with the 2006 (the first year of the se model) the part number is the same so I would say yes they are compatible.
@@DinosTinkerShed Thank you very much
I just came across your channel as I’m researching a DR 650. I’ve ridden motorcycles for close to 40 years but gave it up a few years ago and got into wilderness canoe trips. I’m now considering a bike to do some off-road wilderness camping and let the bike carry everything rather than me on the portages.I enjoyed your video and it showed me some of the potential, as my riding style will be quite similar to yours. I subscribed and look forward to more videos. Cheers from London.
@@prospector14 thank you for the feedback, I'm glad you are enjoying the content. Dino
I'm considering buying one of these and have a question. The description states that some parts of the jacket are reflective. Are they adequately reflective so that people can see you at night? Are only a few small bits reflective or do you light up like a Christmas tree in someone's headlights?
@johncox4253 that is a good question, I'll have to check tonight
@DinosTinkerShed Please let me know. I'm taking the training course to get my motorcycle endorsement next weekend.
@johncox4253 Congrats on the license, I just checked, and all the lettering and silver banding is reflective. You have coverage on all sides. It's not excessive, though, and there may be jackets with more reflectivity.
Hi Dino, I use my DR primarily on city streets or on fire roads. I switched to a 46 tooth rear and replaced the chain with a longer one. I swap the front sprocket between 13 and 15 depending on my mission. A word of warning, the stock chain guide will not accommodate anything larger than a 46 tooth rear sprocket. In the game of DR 650ing, it’s all about making it work for you.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Dino!! Keep making DR content but I think many of us would enjoy any other type of content you make as well! You have great camera presence, a calming demeanor, and a great editing style. Try out expanding into other content too if you feel like it!
@docBZA thanks for the feedback, I'll do that, any areas you would like to see?
15/43 makes the best all round compromise. And having odd numbers of teeth on both sprockets will make your chain and sprockets last longer.
Std gearing in Australia is 15/42. This works well for me As Im 63y/o and ride similar to you. Good vid Dino. Ps Tell Carl he is a Traitor LOL
Thanks for sharing, Dino! I swap my DR between a 14/43 on the highway and 13/43 for off-road. I found the 15/43 just too tall for almost everything. Actually, if I could change one thing on the DR it would be to have a much wider range transmission with a way lower first gear.

Very usefel video (as usual) on sprocket change Dino. Karl's V Strom - A few years ago I flew to North Island New Zealand and hired a Suzuki DL 650 V Strom and rode around the Island for a month. The following year I shipped my own DR 650 to South Island of NZ and rode around for a month or so. I liked the V Strom for sealed roads as it is a great touring bike. It is certainly a little heavier. I would enjoy hearing Kharl's view of the V Strom relative to the DR. Cheers Mal
A 13-tooth is even better! That’s what I’ve ran for the last 10,000 miles. Including the entire TAT.
Peak torque is approx 4800 rpm so it now runs in its sweet spot. Good stuff. ✔
Dino: How much has your Safari tank swelled out. How many litres can it now hold ?
@justgjt I rarely fill it co pretty but it over 30l I'm sure. I'm guessing 33
how does it feel on 80km/h .. would it be ok to be in 5th at 75 or even 70km/h on a flat road. I had a KTM 390 which I woudl say the minimium I could ride without feeling that that it dd not bug down was 75km/h unless ... it was absolutley flast and no wind... then mayeb 70km/h
@PeterCichoszewski the bike has no issues at 70 , I have ridden 4 or 5 hours at 100 with no issues. Now it should be even better
Dino - hard to do a "star pattern" on 3 bolts (I'm teasing you) LOL - I always use the rubber washer on the backside of the retaining ring. For what it's worth - I have (and use) 14, 15, and 16 tooth sprockets. I love the 14 the best - as I do a lot of off-road desert riding (Glendale, AZ) - the 15 tooth is right in the middle, and works perfectly for both on-road, and off... If you are doing a ton of highway riding, the 16 tooth will still do most anything you want, but drops your RPM's by about 500 at highway speeds - and although the following is probably true for a lot of bikes, you can use any of the three sprockets I've mentioned - and the stock size chain will still work. - The best thing about THE MIGHTY SUZUKI DR 650 is, that it has so much torque, it doesn't care what sprocket you use !!!! Cheers !!!!
Good information Obi Wan. My DR650 power train is still completely stock. Works for me. I hope all is well.
@@ParallelCamper hi ROB !!!!! - Love your brother !!! all is good here 🙂
Well done Dino and I love Karl's new bike ! 👍 I did the same with my DR 650 running 14 front and 42 rear and it's perfect for any riding under 60 MPH as most of mine is . However I side with Suzuki as they have forgotten more about building motorcycles than most will ever know ...... The factory 15 / 42 was perfect for anyone that could ride a motorcycle .😁
Leaving my front 15 for a bit less wear on chain on a smaller sprocket.....will go up 1 or 2 on the rear when need a change of sprockets. I had both a KLR...always looking for a sixth gear and a DR now and find myself in fourth forgetting to go to fifth ....much smoother. Final parts have arrived and will be done in a week or so. Then on to the navigation...we will talk again before that task. Garth

If i know im going into some rough areas i will put the 14 on. Also the larger front sprocket is easier on my chain it seems. As always i look forward to your videos!

Hey, ive got a Drz250 with a no spark issue, ive narrowed it down to the white with blue stripe positive wire that pushes onto the male blade terminal on the ignition coil. When i test the wire with a test light it shows that the wire is supplying earth not positive whether the key is on or not🤷♂️. Ive unwrapped the entire wiring loom and checked for broken or damaged wires and found nothing. My current assumption is that the CDI unit has become faulty and is sending the wrong charge through the wire, which i still find strange as the bike was running 2 weeks ago. Just to be sure ive bought a new coil, stator and pickup and installed them with no success. Im thinking of ordering a new CDI but id rather not because how expensive they can be. What are your thoughts?
@jam58515 oh boy, it does sound like perhaps the cdi could be the issue, is there anyone you know who has a known to be good cdi that you can swap? That is the best method for pulling out the cdi.
@DinosTinkerShed Unfortunately not, none of my friends own a drz or even a suzuki for that matter, i think i might just have to bite the bullet and buy a new CDI. Thanks for the reply👌.
@jam58515 I wish I could be more assistance
K/N air filter oil is for fabric filters only NOT foam. Also those Tusk filters are junk...they come apart at the seems after awhile of sitting.
Can you adjust the suspension on these bikes?
Good question lmk
I've had a 2022 900 Ace for 3 winters now. I can tell you that most of the power is low end. Also, like the Ski-doo 2 stroke counterparts, if you don't set up the suspension, it has enough power to be doing wheelies everywhere. This low end power makes it so no other sleds can get away from you on the trails, but it takes a huge hit on the top speed. In IDEAL conditions, top speed is 140~km/h. It's really the ideal trail sled. As far as reliability, I would look towards the turbo versions because problems are going to show on those 1st. I've had zero issues. Maintenance is simple and easy. I really don't notice any throttle lag at all. 2022 was the year they did a throttle lag update, so maybe it's because of that. Other things to note. It doesn't need scratchers at all. It just stays cool easily under any conditions. The factory carbides are VERY bad. (replaced with Aggressive Sno Trackers. Runs like a dream now) You hear lots of things you are not used to, like track noises/squeaks because the engine is just that quiet. Despite being so quiet, it does still manage to sound very Ski-Doo
@@shperax well said, thank you
