DT Mobile Dustless Sandblasting blasted my chassis in my driveway!
If you watched my last video regarding my 1971 Super Beetle, you know that I gave up on stripping the chassis myself. I'd be an official old bat by the time I was done with that! SO! I hired DT Mobile Dustless Blasting to come to my house and blast my chassis in the driveway. What a great experience! Dan, the owner, is a great guy. I highly recommend him! You can check out his web page here: www.dtdustlessblasting.com/.

Harbor Freight Abrasive Blaster Assembly

A few viewers asked me to slow down the assembly section of my last video. I am very flattered that someone wants to see me assemble something! Unfortunately, I delete footage once I edit it into a final video. SO . . . instead, I made this video that, hopefully, helps you but a Harbor Freight Abrasive Blaster together. The instructions that come with the unit are not very good! #harborfreight ...

    A pair of 5/16 or 8mm bolts would have been more than adequate. Actually, as I am sitting here typing this reply it occurred to me that 4 short 5/16 or 8mm bolts and nuts would be the best solution for a bolted join. The very best would be to weld the angle iron pieces to the engine stand. I would not want to use this stand with a V8 engine with 4 holes drilled in the pivot tube so your idea of selling the stand in the future is compromised.

    Here is a tip for the ideal VW engine stand. Get on that has 2 lower legs. Summit has a decent one, PN 918014 , $124.99 at this time. . The double legs means that there is easy access to put the engine on the stand. A hydraulic lift table works best and they are also awesome for R&R’ing the engine in the car. No more precarious balancing on a floor jack.

    Hi Trish. Haven't had a chance to watch and comment lately, but I got caught up yesterday. Great video. As someone else mentioned, it looks like the floor pans are in really good shape. Do you know if they've been replaced in the past? I really admire you patience and perseverance with this project. I'm not sure if I could do it. Meaning I don't have the patience. This car really will be a labor of love when it's done. My car (Beetlejuice) is finally in paint, and I'm hoping reassembly will start within the next week or so. Hopefully that will go quickly since my car is supposed to be highlighted by Just Buggin' at the huge Bug Jam Festival in November in FL. That's if I can get my part done after I get the car back. As I mentioned before, I was lucky that my car was 98% rust free. I was also fortunate that I was able to get a "frame on" restoration done professionally at a cost I can live with. But part of me is a little envious that I wasn't in a position to do it myself like you are. Oh well, it is what it is. I hope to be driving it in late October. When you get to the body work and interior work I'll share a few things I learned. The hard way. Can't wait for the next video.

    • @TrixedOut
      @TrixedOut หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Gary! I don't know if the pans were ever replaced. I don't think so because so many other things are so worn out. I'd assume much of that would have been repaired if the body was ever removed. Yes, this is a labor of LOVE! I'm almost certain I will do another restoration because the vast majority of money I have spent is on tools. Now that I have all the tools and some know-how, the next one should be more fun! Very exciting about Bettlejuice! I know you told me but I can't recall: what color did you pick? It was hot pink before, right?

    That little bit of fur on the plug is actually really good. :-) looks to be in great shape. The difference in shades is simply due to age and usage. As long as you don’t see any chunks you’re in pretty good shape :-)! Glad to see you are still at it :-) Like stated above, it looks like your cables are in great shape. The stuff made “overseas“ is going to cause you a lot of frustration. When you go to putting this back I guarantee it…. Unfortunately that’s the way it is pretty much with most of the parts we get nowadays. You will have to spend sometimes and in ordinate amount of time and effort to get those parts to fit. Again, I will reiterate what I said, in the very beginning, if the original German stuff can be used over, use it in every case! Keep at it :-)!

    what capacity and the brand of your compresor for your new abrasive blaster?

    • @TrixedOut
      @TrixedOut หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! I have a 60 gallon, 3 HP, Northern Star Model PK-6060VNS. What’s nice about using a pressurized sandblaster is that you don’t have to have a giant compressor. The draw back is having to stop to refill media. That’s not that big of a deal since the fill port just screws off. If I was to change anything it would be buying a larger media tank.

      @@TrixedOut that’s what I determined after leaving this comment, there’s a guy that did a comprehensive video on the blaster and how it works with various compressor sizes and anything under 10-12 SCFM and it’s basically useless. Shame it’s quite a big investment to get blasting. Once you’ve had something blasted there’s hardly a better way to revitalize parts. And where I live, it’s hard to take a part to the blaster and not have surface rust on it by the time I get home with it. Maybe one day!

      Thank you so much! You know, when I decided I was going to figure out a way to do all this, the first thing I did (aside from watching a billion how to videos) was set up my garage so I had the space. I believe in that, "If you build it, they will come," sort of thing and, lo and behold, here I am. Shortly after I got the space figured out, I found my bug only about an hour away from my house. It was a great price. Plus, it wasn't so toasted that it was beyond all hope. I say you do that!

    Great vids. Love that you credit Slades content too. Suggestion for small parts cleaning, especially carbs - Ultrasonic Cleaner (USC). I use a wide mouth glass jar or plastic jar like what nuts are packed in. Wide mouth is key. Wire mesh tea leaf balls to hold small small parts. I put Simple Green or Seafoam in the jar with parts, and distilled water in the Cleaner. The jar just barely floats in the water thats in the USC. Strain the used Simple Green through a coffee filter and keep reusing it. Stay gold.

      What great ideas! I have a lot of the things you mentioned. I just need the USC. I think Slade got his at Harbor Freight. That's my favorite place to go in town other than restaurants! Thanks for the comment!

    I wouldn't cut a hole in the tunnel, near the pedal assembly, unless you need to. Just my opinion. The floor pans, look like they're in great shape.

    These videos are fantastic! I love your can do spirit. SUBSCRIBED!!! It’s so refreshing to see you figuring things out in real time. I’m doing my own research to fix a bug up for my daughter’s first car and you’re giving me the confidence to go for it. Your enthusiasm for successfully removing a tough bolt is infectious, in a good way! Keep at it and thanks for sharing with the rest of us!!

    So good to see you back! I’ve been wondering what happened to you. Good to see another update. You’re in good company on the challenge you faced with disassembling your struts. Just about everyone else that’s posted videos of strut removal on their channels were able to remove the three bolts with a 3/8” ratchet and then the three parts just fell apart. I ended up buying used spindles on eBay as I couldn’t get mine to separate (even after ruining my wood chisels trying). Just a tip for future reference… SnapOn sold a purpose-made brake adjustment tool for getting to the adjustment Star wheels on the front brakes on ‘71-‘72 Super Beetles. I picked one up on eBay and it’s a game changer for adjusting the front brake shoes. Great video and loved the music from Carmen!

      Oooh great tip re the SnapOn tool! I'll go get one right now! Having the right tools really makes a difference. I'm almost done disassembling the rear suspension and removing the trans-axle! That video will be up in the next few weeks! Thanks for you kind words!

    When you get ready to install the new brake metal lines and hoses. Get yourself a set of metric flare nut wrenches.

      @TrixedOut Flare nut wrenches, are only 6 point for a reason. Maybe others call them in line wrenches.
