- Here's Episode 2 of my series, 1971 VW Beetle Restoration - The Old Bat and the Old Bug! I'll be washing off years of bat poop, polishing up the roof to see if there's hope for the paint, testing all the electrical, removing the charcoal canister, taking off the rear bumper, removing the rear fenders and taking a quick look at the spring plates. Fun, fun, fun! Please like, comment and subscribe!!

I normally don’t like watching videos with little talking but you are showing what you did and emphasizing the important parts. I feel like I am hanging out with you in your garage. Great video
Thank you! That means a lot. I actually prefer less talking so that's why I do it that way. I like seeing things done rather than hearing about what will be done. I learn better that way. Sometimes taking is needed to explain stuff so that's very helpful. In the end, if the video teaches me something, it doesn't matter how much talking goes on. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
Nice work
Thanks
How I bumped onto this don't no 😂❤😊I like it doe shouts from England
Awesome! All the way from England! You all have great VW stuff over there. Thanks for the comment.
Enjoying your vw videos I'm reworking a 68 standard. My first at a diy...good luck
Thanks! Are doing videos as well? I'd love to see them!
@TrixedOut on no. I don't video. Its not a very funny comedy..
A good body shop with a frame machine, should be able to fix driver side body damage. If the frame is damaged a alignment shop should be able to find out.
Okay! Great tip! Thanks!
My 71 standard Beetle has a rain collector inside the deck lid that prevents water dripping on the engine, I it drains down through two tubes. Useful addition in wet countries I am in Scotland so that qualifies for wet but only 300 days a year..😀
Great advice. I'll look into that. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
harbor freight sells pneumatic body straightening things. that might help you out
I will definitely check that out! Thanks for the tip!
i had a 71 Super Beetle identical to this with a sunroof . it was purchased new in Norfolk , Nebraska at Bob Johnson Motors . traded my 67 Delux bug [big mistake] . found the 71 would never start when it rained . discovered water entering the hood vents and into the collection duct below . the duct was formed with a hole that allowed water to drip directly onto the distributor [duh VW] . same thing happened with melting snow . traded it for a new 73 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe [bigger mistake] . good luck with the restoration ... i'll be watching
I was looking back at my comments and noticed I didn't reply to this one. I totally remember this comment and I was sure I had responded! So, here my belated response: I've heard about this issue with water/snow melt getting in there. I think there is a solution out there I just can't recall what it is. Probably a drain with a little hose to divert the water somewhere else, I bet. Thanks for the comment!
The metal charcoal canister like yours can't be rebuilt. The later plastic units can. Samba has more information on it.
Good to know. I've seen some videos (like the JBugs SB rebuild) where they nixed the entire emissions parts (they kept the venting stuff). What do you think of that?
@@TrixedOut It up to you, if you want to keep the evap system in your car. I'm going to try install the evap system back in my car. I have been collecting all the parts to do the job. Evap system keeps the fuel fumes out of the cabin.
Well that's a good reason to keep it in there! I'll look for one of those canisters and include that in my rebuild!
@@TrixedOut The plastic canisters came out on the 74 and up models. The buses, Porsche 914, Ghia, etc all use the same canisters. Get 2, because the metal spring might be broken spring inside the canister.
The metal clips that hold the evap line, are not available new. You have to get good used ones, or make new ones yourself.
Gotcha!
Thanks for the tip!! I’ll be sure to address this design flaw!!
I was told do not use a torque wrench to take anything off... go to harbor freight, get a break bar - 10 dollars ! and the black 1/2" drive impact sockets, you will be able to take off almost any bolt on this car.
@@DanTheManIOM thanks for the tip! I actually did get breaker bars and impact sockets. You’ll see that in later videos!
26.02: You are not using those Vernier calipers correctly. Note on the first measurement, you were measuring from the 'flats' of the jaws on both ends. On the second measurement, only the top jaw was measuring from the flat; the lower jaw was measuring to the gap between the flat and the slide. I've never measured how much that 'step' is, but I'd bet it was at least .100". Also, measuring from the inside of a rusty, butt-weld hole guarantees you almost zero accuracy...
Hi! Thanks for all the info! I'll go back and check that out. The body is off now so I'll be able to take a closer look at it all. Also, the problem may have just been the fact that I had two different sized tires on the bug!
Ok please read. Body work and doors! Don’t remove the hinges screws! Nock out the hinges pins with your air hammer straight up ! The running boards are off it will be easy. Ok using 8 mm bolts in there place. Will save you so much time. No door adjustment and you can remove and install them easily. Checking your heater channel work for perfect alignment. 😊
AAAAhhhh that makes so much sense! I already took the hinges off the passenger side so BIG bummer! I will definitely do what you said for the driver's side. Maybe I can tell where the hinges were on the passenger side and put them back on. I'll check asap! Thank you!
@@TrixedOut ok put the door back on. Aline it. The best you can? remove the door pins. You probably will still be ok. Merry Christmas and good luck.
@@tonymalatesta1253 Thanks Tony and Merry Christmas to you, too!
