Zilog and Moto
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.พ. 2019
An in depth and hopefully sometimes humorous looks at the golden days of the Sega 8 and 16 bit consoles. The goal is to review 1,200+ Master System/Genesis/Sega CD/32X Games that compromise the US/European/Brazilian Libraries, and maybe even a few Japanese releases as well. Hopefully TH-cam is still around in 20 years, after World War III, because it's probably going to take that long to get this done...
Spot Goes To Hollywood (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #268
I'm a big fan of Cool Spot, both in it's Genesis and Master System iterations, so I was excited to finally get to play Spot Goes to Hollywood this week. I knew that Spot Goes to Hollywood was going to be a different sort of game, since it eschewed standard 2D platforming for an isometric view, but I was still hopeful that it could be awesome. Was it? Welllll....let's just say it didn't get the same rating as Cool Spot did, but you'll have to watch to know more.

Ball Jacks (Sega Mega Drive) - Zilog and Moto #267
มุมมอง 19314 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week's video sees me trying to figure out what a "Ball Jacks" is, and then come to find out, that it's unfortunately a lot closer to a previous game that featured robots that also didn't get released in the United States than I would prefer. I mean, technically, it doesn't really have that much in common with Rise of the Robots, but...well, anyway, watch the review and you'll understand, a...
John Madden Football '92 (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #266
มุมมอง 20321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Well, it's time to start out Season 7 of Zilog and Moto with not a bang but a BOOM! John Madden Football '92 was actually the first John Madden Football game I ever played, and being that my previous history with console football games consisted of Football on the Atari 2600 (and not RealSports Football, oh no, I mean the ORIGINAL Football from 1978), John Madden Football '92 was an incredible ...
Zilog and Moto's 2024 Year in Review (Year Six!)
มุมมอง 26228 วันที่ผ่านมา
Well, it's the end of another year on Zilog and Moto, so it's time to hand out some silly awards, and dive into some top 10 lists, since apparently youtube loves top 10 lists. It's been a great year for the channel, and I want to personally thank everyone for watching, liking, subscribing, telling a friend, commenting, whatever you might have done, no matter how small, it's all appreciated. So,...
Phantasy Star II (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #265
มุมมอง 357หลายเดือนก่อน
Well, I've been promising this one for a while now, and I gave myself a deadline of this year to finally deliver, so here it is, all almost 30 minutes of it. Yes, this is the LONGEST review so far on the channel for a single game (the Great Soccer review is technically longer, but that also covers both of the games with the name "Great Soccer"). Phantasy Star II is big game, and as such, I had ...
World Cup Italia '90 (Sega Master System) - Zilog and Moto #264
มุมมอง 281หลายเดือนก่อน
So far on the channel, I feel like I haven't played a whole lot of good soccer games. I mean, there's been FIFA, which was good of course, and European Club Soccer was cool due to having so many teams, even if the gameplay was kind of "meh". I was hoping this week that World Cup Italia '90 for the Master System might have bucked that trend a bit, and while there's some good ideas here...I think...
Streets of Rage (Sega Master System) - Zilog and Moto #263
มุมมอง 294หลายเดือนก่อน
Back in episode 163, I reviewed a game that I put COUNTLESS hours into when I was a kid, in Streets of Rage for the Genesis. At the time, it was clearly the best beat em up available on the console, and due to it's soundtrack and great control scheme, it's held up pretty well over the years, so I had no qualms about awarding it four stars. However, this isn't that, this is a review of Streets o...
Space Harrier (32X) - Zilog and Moto #262
มุมมอง 3182 หลายเดือนก่อน
Two 32X reviews in one season? It's more likely than you think! Today, we return to Space Harrier for what could be the final time (I promise, I'm going to at least try to do reviews for the Master System 3D line...somehow), but for the first time on the channel, we've possibly got some hardware that can do the Super Scaler Arcade Beast justice. How did it turn out? Is it just as good as the ar...
Wings of Wor (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #261
มุมมอง 3962 หลายเดือนก่อน
A long, long time ago, I had a dream. That dream was to create my own gaming review website based around MAME reviews. I think I wrote about 30 of them and gave up. But, the idea stuck with me, and that's part of how Zilog and Moto came to be. Why am I mentioning this now and what does this have to do with Wings of Wor? Well, I explain in the intro, but the short version is, I apparently can't ...

มุมมอง 2602 หลายเดือนก่อน
I know it seems like almost every review on the channel is for some game that I've never played before, but believe it or not, I DID actually play more than a few Sega games back in the day, hence the whole reason why I wanted to start the channel and the collection. Today's review is one of those games, and as interesting as it is for me to play something new, it's also interesting for me to p...
My Hero (Sega Master System) - Zilog and Moto #259

Every Sega Card game that I've reviewed so far has been an...interesting experience, especially through 2024 eyes, where even a single config file in a game today might be larger than one of these entire games. But just because these Sega Card games are nice technical achievements...that doesn't necessarily make them good games. My Hero does an admirable job of taking full advantage of it's 32 ...
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #258
มุมมอง 2642 หลายเดือนก่อน
Well, it's spooky season, so I decided to go with a classic, in more ways than one. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is based on the 1994 film starring Robert DeNiro and Kenneth Branagh, and while on the surface, it seems like a long lost Castlevania title, once you start to look at it, it does some things that you might not be expecting...starting with who you play as. Is it any good? And how well ...
MegaRace (Sega CD) - Zilog and Moto #257
มุมมอง 2533 หลายเดือนก่อน
Some video games are fantastic ideas...but the execution is a bit lacking. This is what I ran into this week, with MegaRace for the Sega CD, a game that checked off all sorts of boxes for things that I like: futuristic, racing, blowing crap up, dark and absurd humor...you get the idea. Unfortunately, MegaRace ends up being a case of trying to do too much with technology that just wasn't quite t...
Sports Talk Baseball (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #256
มุมมอง 3573 หลายเดือนก่อน
As you get older, things tend to get a little...fuzzy. That game that you really liked when you were a kid, was it REALLY that good? Or are you maybe forgetting some key details. These were questions I asked myself when reviewing Sports Talk Baseball this week, which was notable to me for being the first baseball game that I loved that also featured real baseball players. Well, did I end up hav...
Growl (Sega Genesis) - Zilog and Moto #255
มุมมอง 3033 หลายเดือนก่อน
Over the last weekend, I had a bit of a road trip, and was able to get to some game stores that I don't usually see, and due to that, I found a few games to add to the collection. One of those was Growl, the port of the arcade game from Taito. Growl tends to be somewhat pricey, which is why I hadn't picked it up before, but when I saw it this time around, I decided that I should go ahead and ta...

Love the format guy. Keep it up.
Thank you!
Have u already done Earthworm Jim?! Did I miss it? If not, DO IT!!!!
I have not. Probably will be a good one to get on the schedule this year.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Never tried a Spot game. Usually I enjoy isometric games, but looks like this one won't make me fizz. I'll have to try Cool Spot.
Definitely should. It's excellent.
I have the Saturn version, and it's sooooo good.
It looked much better, at least based on footage I watched comparing the two. The enemies and platforming looked a lot more forgiving.
@ZilogandMoto yeah, it felt difficult, but not unfair. The added FMV cutscenes are wonderfully 90s, too.
I only played it for a few minutes. Didn't seem like it would be worth my time... 1.6 litres? Holy... I think large here is 0.5 litres.
Movie theater large drinks here are ridiculous, I'm not sure if the thinking is that people would want to share necessarily or what. But, considering what they cost, it's good that you're at least getting something for your money.
@@ZilogandMoto prices are also very high at theaters here. In the past I just put a can of soda in one pocket and a packet of nuts in the other.
1.6 is suprisingly a lot 😮
I had rr2 (panda 900 was my favorite) and then had the game gear version.
It looks difficult in general let alone with the bosses.
It's certainly tougher than the original game, but if you practice and know the tricks of the bosses, I'm sure it's beatable, especially with the level passwords.
I don't think I've seen the Namco intro on Mega Drive before, it looks nice.
It's pretty sad when we're having to give credit to the intro rather than the game itself.
gotta be one of the most boring games on the system, but what's exciting is that the 2025 march to 1k is already 25% complete...!
I watched this whole thing and I'm still not entirely sure what it is. Called the score mind. Also that might be your least subtle clue ever.
Yeah, I had to call an audible there. I had written it that I was going to just grab a 7-Up and drink it, but then I went to shoot and forgot to buy one, so had to redo all that at the last minute. Oops.
When I went to Gameshop Twente over a year ago, to get three of my Dreamcasts modded to be able to replace the batteries. I picked up a few games they had in stock too, including this one. I like the concept, but why doesn't it have more options? I played it some against a friend too, which was fun for a little while, but it soon became stale.
That sounds about right.
I remember this receiving a terrible review score in a British magazine while noting the title’s similarity with the word ‘bollocks’
LOL. Yeah, I try to avoid seeing anyone else's reviews before I do my own, but in this case, I happened to see possibly that review, where Mega gave it a 9%. I don't think it's THAT bad, because it's actually functional, but they're not far off.
@@ZilogandMoto 🤣 That must be the one! I had rarely seen a game score that low!
This is basically Hungry Hungry Hippos with a sci-fi twist. The sports fans in 7586 AD have terrible taste. At least we'll still have Madden then.
Yeah, but Hungry Hungry Hippos is actually fun. And that's a pretty good analogy.
It looks pretty bad from here. Also, probably not a popular opinion, but I never cared much for the movies.
Yeah, not a popular opinion for sure. ;)
This is similar to the last post I made. This game was similar to games that were already existing so it is at an unfair advantage. Of course, as you discussed, it still has its own flaws regardless. Completely unrelated but hurricane Helene made me think of it. I discovered your first video from a game related to my mother. She lived in Bradenton about 15 miles north of the center landfall of Hurricane Milton. I was convinced that storm was going to eliminate them in one fell swoop. But as fate would have it. They didn’t even lose power, even though 85% of the people in their county did.
Even with all the bugs worked out this game still has a disadvantage that it has no control over. As you mentioned, it’s relating in many ways to Castlevania. When you have an original production, whether it be video game TV show song or whatever, which sets a new bar Anything at all similar to it will always be compared to that which can be unfair at times. Of course, as you said, this game has some problems on its own anyway.
probably my favorite intro of yours yet. Z&M: older than the pandemic…since day one, forever™
The 3do version was amazing and by far the best version. It was like a different game
Some of those 3DO EA Games are lost classics. Thankfully most made it over to Playstation.
Not that I disliked it but having played sports talk football, the bar was already set for me but the time I played this.
I was thinking legendary wings from NES before the game started and forgotten worlds once it got started. Maybe a cross between the two.
I could see that.
Oh man the ambulance! Good times.
I actually have this US import. Probably because it costs next to nothing there, whilst the EU version is over 10€. Played it once and the game lasted too long, so I got bored and quit.
Yeah, I had to mention the slowness in the review. It's noticeable in places.
Is it just me or John Madden on that picture looks like a prop from Troll 2?
With the teeth? Yeah, I could see it.
Interesting, as a european i indeed had no idea who Madden was before the games. BUT in the british mags i never read much about Montana so i my assumption was Madden was just always the best american football game, at least in the 16bit days. Of course not having much intrest in the sport it is very possible i just read the reviews to quickly or skipped them all together. May try some tecmo superbowl or nfl blitz to see if i can at least get a little intrest in playing the sport digitally (both these have retro achievement support, the madden and montana games do not). Actually did play a bit of madden bitd. Rented madden on my snes and i i even had it on amiga......but just never really got into it...... i do believe both the titles i mentioned (especially blitz, thats basically the nba jam of football games right?) are more arcadey so more change to 'get it'i guess :)
Yeah, Blitz would be considered very much the NBA Jam/Hangtime equivalent. And there's actually a Madden branded version of Blitz that came out in the 360 era, called Madden NFL Arcade.
I get that it’s based on an older programming but could they have at least given you a decent kick like in Kung Fu on nes. That weird jump has to be timed right and then can still put you in a bad spot when you come down.
It does take getting used to, for sure.
I remember thinking when this game came out that it seemed silly. I just thought it was a generic platform with a James Bond coating. It actually looks to be more involved than I would have thought.
I think one of my favorite things about the game, is that you're not doing the same thing in every level, there's actually variety to what's going on.
2 star's, for a console game that was close to the arcade version is an insult to all genesis fans, you are a japanese taint licker.
Can you tell me where you found the Ray Gun item? I'll verify it and correct the article. When I wrote the article, I couldn't find it the item anywhere, so I checked all the longplays I could find and didn't see anyone else who found it either (the World of Longplays one even says in the description that he couldn't find the item either). Eventually, I found an "All Secrets" video by a Russian player where he finds the Ray Gun at the beginning of the They Only Live Once level (which is the seventh level). I checked in the same spot in my game, and it wasn't there. Then I had the idea that it was probably removed from the NA version because it's a cartoon character having a gun (they were particularly sensitive about these things before the ratings systems were developed), so I checked if there's a European ROM. There isn't, there's only one ROM for all regions, so I changed my emulator to Europe and went to the same level, and the Ray Gun item is exactly in the same place it was in the Russian player's video. So I concluded that the item was deliberately removed from the North American version. However, it's possible that the item exists somewhere else on the North American version, though I considered this unlikely that it would be odd to go out of their way to remove the item from one spot but not remove it everywhere. But if you found it somewhere else, that would disprove my assumption.
Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly. If it's not shown in the game footage I included in the review, I wouldn't know, as I've already deleted my captured footage due to space constraints. But it appeared exactly as shown on the Sega Retro page. It was definitely in one of the later levels (7+), that much I remember, and while my Genesis is region modded, I was definitely in US mode when playing the game, as I avoid PAL unless there's a specific reason to use it (game runs too fast, etc.) The only thing I can think of is either it was bugged, or it does have multiple appearances, and there's a region check in game, and the game behaves differently based on that. It wouldn't be the strangest thing I've ever seen. Assuming you wrote that Sega Retro article? If so, fantastic work, very detailed.
The disregard for what altered beast did, by bringing the arcade to your palms, the large sprite's and parallax scrolling had never been seen before, imagine the wonder people felt. Forshame sir 😠
It's eye candy, at best. It has no replay value. I loved it as a kid too, but going back to play it as an adult, I realized it's got some faults, which is part of the point of the channel, to see what things hold up, and what things maybe I missed thirty years ago.
@ZilogandMoto Altered beast on the genesis was an arcade port, it's just fallowing the source material. The genesis was a arcade machine. Arcade game's were basic, what do you want?
@Troll_On_TH-cam you inadvertently answered your own question, most of my issues with the game go back to the original design. And let's be real, it wasn't a perfect port, the sound isn't as good and the graphics are missing detail, specifically all the scaling has been removed. If I can play a game, and within an hour, I've seen all there is to see, that's a problem, especially if it's the pack in game for a console and I have nothing else to play.
@@ZilogandMoto The impact of altered beast was huge, it was a huge leap from the nes, the large sprite's and parallax scrolling. It was very cool, and you're viewing it through a modern lens, and if that's the case no retro game should hold up to you.
At last, cosmic justice is fulfilled and Berenstain Bears Camping Adventure is recognized for its excellence. Haha I love that game!
Hell yeah.
a cartrige with controller ports is wild!
Works really well, too. I was concerned that their might be an issue with today's wireless controllers, but nope, works just like plugging into a regular port.
Nice way to wrap it up for the year! I am looking forward to 2025 and thank you for the entertainment you provided throughout 2024.
You're welcome! Here's to another year!
Happy to hear you are still enjoying making these, as i certainly enjoy watching these! I love your style of laid back reviewing with a little bit of humor in there. While i personally do not have a problem with adding 'modern' retro games in the list. Maybe it would be an idea to split the lists? So best original games and maybe best new games? But then i'd also think it fair to have a per console top 10, or i guess maybe a top 5 or top 3 to keep things more speedy. And then you get A LOT of lists which also does not seem ideal. But i'll check it out no matter what! All the best in 2025! Oh and for shmups, yes the pce does have that rep. But the md is def no slouch, i believe at least 80 entries? Your co-youtuber shmupjunkie has made a few vids on this subjects, one where even the snes gets involved. Because even though some shmups do have slow down, there is still a lot of shmup goodness on that system as well!
It's definitely something that I've debated in my head, because while those games run on real hardware, and there's still clearly talent there on the programmers part, I could totally see someone saying that they "cheated". I'll have to keep thinking about it. And as far as having "multiple" lists, I've already thought about that by the time I get to the Year 10 episode, I'll probably do separate lists for each of the consoles, so maybe at that point I'll pull them out. We'll see.
Keep up the good work! The only one of the games in your bad pile that I really disagree with is Great Ice Hockey. I had so much fun using the Sports pad with it. I totally got used to how it works.
I consider myself at least relatively well informed in most retro matters ,although admittedly i never had much interest in the master system (i do love the 80ies design of the model 1) beyond just playing most well know titels via my megadrive. But never even heard of the sports pad! Definitely googling it.
It's just especially rough trying to play it 2024, the Sports Pads are hard to maintain. If it had the gamepad functionality built into it as well, like Great Soccer does, it wouldn't be on the list. And I do like the concept of tying the inertia to the speed of the trackball, that was pretty clever.
That'll happen when only three games get released that support it, and two of them had non-sports pad versions.
another great year-end episode. congrats on 900! i was so sure that you’d be reaching 1k right about now, but it’s at least definitely gonna be Q1 2025. and my sense is that it becomes an order of magnitude easier to get people to tune in and subscribe with each decimal point milestone a channel reaches…i’m hoping it proves true for you! 🙏
We shall see. Honestly, I'm fine if the channel stays as it is, I'm just going to do my thing and everyone can either like it or go watch someone else. ;)
Keep up good work
