Arriving in Surabaya in Java, Indonesia. Trying to find my bearings!
After two days on a ferry traveling from Borneo to Surabaya, Indonesia, I finally arrived, feeling pretty worn out as the only westerner on board! The next adventure was navigating the busy port area, dodging taxi drivers, and finding the hotel I’d saved online-armed with just a screenshot and no internet connection. It was going to be a challenge! 🗺️
Determined to do it all on foot, I carried 20 kg across Surabaya, wandering through the bustling port and taking a few wrong turns along the way. Two hours later, I finally reached the hotel, exhausted but relieved. 🏨
Now, it's time to rest up, recharge, and plan my next move. I’ll be heading to a hostel in the city center tomorrow, but for tonight, it's all about relaxation!

Life on a Cheap 2 Day Ferry Journey
มุมมอง 6682 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I've now spent 24 hours aboard a ferry on a 2-day journey across the Java Sea, and adapting to life on the waves has been quite the experience! With no one speaking English and all the announcements in Indonesian, there were definitely a few challenges. However, I’ve managed to navigate it all, and today, I took an hour to explore and film what life is like onboard. From where I sleep, to the m...
The Cheapest Ferry Adventure: Pontianak to Surabaya, Indonesia on a £20 Ferry Journey.
มุมมอง 1.1K4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I embarked on the cheapest ferry ride I've ever taken - only £20 -,journeying from Pontianak on the island of Borneo to Surabaya in Java, Indonesia. After days of research, I discovered that all ferries departing Borneo sail from its Indonesian side. My excitement grew as I spent four days in Pontianak, eagerly awaiting the journey. Information about the ferry was sparse; even the ticket office...

Pontianak Waterfront - Day and Night

On my second full day in Pontianak, Indonesia, I ventured to the city's most 'touristy' spot-its Waterfront. Conveniently located just a block from my hostel, it was an easy walk. By day, the Waterfront has a laid-back vibe, but you can tell it's seen better times. The promenade is lined with houses that hang over the edge, and some tiles are missing-I even tripped over one! 😅 Still, the view o...

My first full day in Indonesia, and I’m in the heart of Pontianak-a huge, chaotic city that never seems to slow down! As I’m staying in the city center, I figured it was time to explore and get a feel for the place while tackling a big task: finding out about ferries to the mainland. I’m behind schedule on my travels, and I really need to keep moving! Armed with my trusty offline maps app (Orga...

A nice clean ferry. Twenty five years ago we slept on the floor. In the past you had to travel in twos to protect your belongings. One person had to stay with the belongings at all times to protect from theft, while the other went to the toilet or any other needed endeavor. Also the ferries were so crowded that one had to keep enough space so your traveling partner would have room to sit or lay down when they came back. I have witnessed gangways breaking and everyone falling just from so many people trying to get on or off at the same time. Once between Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, a ferry we has traveled on was returning to Lombok and the captain cut too far south and hit an underwater coral outcrop. The sunken ferry was never recovered and most lives were lost.

      @olderbackpacker วันที่ผ่านมา

Oh my god! That sounds crazy. The ferry today is a lot better than the past. I left my backpacks and nothing was stolen. There were a few people sleeping on the floor, but that was only because the plastic beds got too warm and sticky at night!

@@olderbackpacker I don't live here yet. But I will very soon. If you want a longer term visa for MY, perhaps the digital nomad one could work. Be safe out there. I just started watching the ferry video. I had looked into that but the website was so horrible... And then I saw reviews. I just saw that Air Aisa has a cheap ASEAN flight pass. I could not figure the rules out. Maybe it could work for you.

Good luck with the move. My backpacking adventure is to get from Borneo to England without flying :) I could cheat, but I would definitely get caught ha ha

Quite a bit of overgrowth. Sad to see a neglected pitch.

Your historical background narratives of the various sites is refreshing to hear. Makes you different from other travel channels.

Thanks for the streetwise intro to Sandakan. I'll be there next week to experience it for a few days.

The "spaceship" that you mentioned is actually a Melanau hat. Melanau is one of the indigenous tribes of Sarawak

Wrong info from girl Nasi Kandar shop. Old airport is in the centre of the town where you can still see the runway
