Udawadiya Village Travel Documentary | Gona Panna Ella #overlanding #travelweekend #offroad #4x4
This time, our journey took us to the remote village of Udawadiya, located in the Dabagolla Grama Niladhari Division within the Badalkumbura Divisional Secretariat of the Monaragala District. It’s one of Sri Lanka's most secluded villages.
We started our journey from the bungalow of the estate supervisor, Kasum Pallamulla, at Spring Valley Estate. We traveled through the estate roads of Spring Valley, eventually reaching Namunukula. Along the way, we encountered a few scenic spots where you could see the Namunukula Range, Babbaragala Peak, Wellawaya, and even glimpses of Badulla Town in the distance.
From Namunukula, we continued about 7 more kilometers toward Ella and arrived at Ballakeṭuwa town. The road to Udawadiya branches off from Ballakeṭuwa. From here, in order to reach Udawadiya in the Badulla District, Ella Divisional Secretariat, but technically within the Monaragala District, we followed the route via Ilukpallessa and Dodamgolla.
The road descends about 5 kilometers from Ballakeṭuwa, and soon we reached Ilukpallessa village. In this village lies the "Katuwe Kubura" paddy field, which is historically significant as the site of a brutal battle fought against the Portuguese around 1630. From Katuwe Kubura, you can visit several notable places, including Ella, Karadagolla, the Uma Oya Hydropower Plant, Nayabadda, Pilkington Point, Millennium Point, Ravana Falls, Punagala, and Lipton’s Seat.
Next, we headed to Dodamgolla, where we encountered a place known as "Kambadiya." This location is historically significant, as it was once used to transport tea leaves to the Kalugala Estate. Only remnants of that old transportation system remain today. From here, we traveled about 4 more kilometers downhill until we finally reached the Udawadiya River, where we took a dip before returning to Dodamgolla for an overnight camp.
The next morning, we set off again to explore Udawadiya, where we came across the beautiful Gonapanna Waterfall. This waterfall has two sections, cascading down from a height of about 15 meters. Later, we visited another scenic paddy field called "Udukubura," where the rice fields are currently being harvested. This picturesque field is located between the Manik River on one side and the Udawadiya River on the other. Traditional wooden bullock carts are still in use here, and we even spotted one!

ඇත්තටම අපි මේ ගමන පටන් ගත්තේ ස්ප්‍රිංවැලි වත්තතේ අතු අදිකාරි කසුම් පල්ලමුල්ල මහතාගේ වතු බංගලාවෙන් . අපි මේ ස්ප්‍රිංවැලි වතුයාය හරහා දක්වා වැටිලා තියෙන වතු මාර්ගය දිගේ නමුනුකුලට ලගා වුනා. ඒ එන ගමනෙදි නමුනුකුල කදුවැටිය , බබරගල පතන. වැල්ලවාය වගේම බදුල්ල නගරයත් හරි අපුරුවට දකින්න පුලුවන් තැන් කිහිපයක්ම මුන ගැහෙනවා.'
නමුනුකුල ඉදන් අපි ඇල්ල පැත්තට තවත් කි.මී 07 ක් විතර ගමන් කලාම තමයි අපිට මුනගැහෙන්නේ බල්ලාකෙටුව නගරය ඉතින් මේ බල්ලකෙටුව නගරයෙන් තමයි උඩවාඩියට යන්න තියෙන මාර්ගය වැටිලා තියෙන්නේ .දැන් අපි ඉන්නේ බදුල්ල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ ඇල්ල ප්‍රාදේශිය ලේකම් කොට්ඨාශයේ මොනරාගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ පිහිටලා තියෙන උඩවාඩිය ගමට යන්න ඇත්තටම වාහානයකින් යනවානම් යන්න තියෙන්නේ මේ අපි යන ඉලුක්පැලැස්ස . දොඩම්ගොල්ල හරහා වැටිලා තියෙන මාර්ගය තමයි .'
බල්ලකෙටුවේ ඉදන් පහලට වැටිලා තියෙන මාර්ගයේ කි.මි පහක් විතර පහලට ආපුහාම තමයි අපිට මුන ගැහෙන්නේ ඉලුක්පැලැස්ස ගම්මානය. මේ ගමේ තියෙනවා කොටුවේ කුබුර කියලා වෙල්යායක් ඒක 1630 පෘතුගිසින්ට එල්ලකරපු දරුනුම සටනට සම්බන්ද තැනක්. මෙ කොටුව කුබුරට ගියාම ඇල්ල .කරදගොල්ල .උමාඔය ජලවිදුලිබලාගාරය . නායබැද්ද. පිල්කින්ටන්පොයින්. මිලේනියම් පොයින්.රාවනා ඇල්ල. පුනාගල සහ ලිප්ටන් සීට් වගේ තැන් කිහිපයක්ම දැක බලා ගන්න පුලුවන් .'
බන්පස්සේ අපි ගියේ දොඩම්ගොල්ලට මේතනදි මුන ගැහෙනවා කම්බ්අඩිය කියලා තැනක් මෙතන ඉදන් තමයි ඉස්සර කලුගල වත්තට තේදලු යවලා තියෙන්නේ අදට දකින්න පුලුවන් වෙන්නේ එහි අවශේෂ කොටස් ්පමනයි. එතනින් පස්සේ තවත් කි.මී. හතරක් විතර පහලට ගියාම තමයි අපිට උඩවාඩියේ ගග මුන ගැහෙන්නේ . අපි එතනින් නාගෙන ආයෙත් දොඩම් ගොල්ලට ආවා රාත්‍රි නවාතැන් ගන්න කදවුරු බිමට.'
පහුවදා අපි උදේ ගියේ උඩවාඩියට එහිදි අපිට මුනගැහෙනවා ගෝනාපැන්න දිය ඇල්ල මේක කොටස් දෙකකට තමයි පහලට කඩාගෙන හැලෙන්නේ මිටර් 15 ක් පමන උසයි .ඉන් පසුව තමයි තවත් ලස්සනම කුබුරුයායක් වන උඩුකුබුරට ගියේ මේ දවස්වල ගොයම් කපනවා මේක කුබුරුයාය තියෙන්නේ හරිම ලස්සන තැනක එක පැත්තකින් මැනික් ගග අනිත් පැත්තෙන් උඩවාඩියේ ගග .මෙහෙ තවමත් බැද අදින්නේ තවලම් වලින් ඉතින් අපිට තවලමකුත් දැක බලා ගන්න පුලුවන් වුනා .'

Thank you for your comment! That old school was used by the army several years ago during their training in the forest. However, the location doesn’t have a good view compared to the bungalows and campsites available in the park, which are much more suitable for visitor accommodation.
