A Solo Mountain Camping Adventure In Bad Weather | Lanshan 1
A solo mountain camping adventure in bad weather, really felt like summer had ended and winter was approaching. Caught in the rain, wind and a hailstorm on my way to a solo camp on the summit of Moel Siabod in north wales.

Closing the door on the tent might help! 🤦🏻♂️
Help with what?
Also notice your cooking system ,very impressed with it. Extremely small lightweight cannot be beaten .
Thanks, it’s my favourite cook system. Alpkit MyTi pot with alcohol burner and windshield/pot stand from Speedster Stoves. 😎
I notice you got the fancy alloy poles ,mine came with very heavy cheap fibreglass poles and the most basic pegs...
Yeah they have a very very similar looking tent to mine but it comes with fibreglass poles rather than the aluminium ones. I’ve also heard of a few Amazon listings advertising the alu pole tent but shipping the fibreglass one!
Some heavy weather!!
Yeah it was great fun 😎
@StuartThow 👍🙂
Rei still sells these full price lmao
Great that you can still buy them, but you would think they would have the price reduced. Especially as you no longer get the 12months free subscription.
I have been looking at these Lanshan 1s 4 season t door model as looks a lot roomier than my bobcat & you seem to punish it and it's survived.I do know that face getting slapped feeling from my bobcat. Lol. Love my vango tempest 200 although heavy for wild camp.
Yeah it is a great tent and it’s definitely survived some tough weather conditions. The 4 season one is great too in winter, definitely a lot warmer than the mesh interior version 😎
I going to get one and make a square tarp with clips , to attach over the top 1000000hh
Awesome vid mate , thanks for sharing .❤
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Another great vid. I completely sympathise with the car situation. It seems every time I have a bit of spare cash for some new gear the car says "I'll have that money" and something pops, breaks or punctures!
Yeah at the moment the car just feels like it is eating money, maybe by next winter I will manage to save for a new tent 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
That's a lot of weather in one day!
Yep the weather forecast was a little bit out 😂
Moderate modification of lanshan 1 may make it more stable.
The tent was pretty stable through the night, just the inner was flapping around. Not sure what I could do to stop that ... Anyway any excuse for a new tent 😂
Best price.
Hail Stuart! In the beginning I thought it was a pack mule. My pack weight is usually 10-12 kilos. What did you carry on this one? I imagine your coffee machine, fuel dispenser and electric pump will weigh 1.5?
I didnt weigh my pack before this one but I vary between about 15 and 19 kg 😂
Such a lovely upload man! Enjoyable work
Thank you 😊
I can’t use my tarptent in heavy winds without the inner flapping. It’s one of the big draw backs to those style of tents. Looked a cracking spot you got though. Winter is here 👌 ATVB Robert
Yeah don't think I'm going to bother with the Lanshan in strong winds anymore, the flapping drives me mad 😂. Thanks for watching 👍
Definitely time for a proper “tent “ that flapping would drive me mad all evening
Definitely time for a proper winter tent 😂
Nothing wrong with this tent when set up correctly, and used in appropriate conditions! 🙄
@ It’s a great tent, still one of my favourites… not sure why you think it’s not setup right though … wanting a different tent for summit camping in winter isn’t a dig at this tent, I have camped in all kinds of weather but it struggles in high winds on summits.
Great video Stu 👍 Really curious about those Buffalo Shirts. Have you worn it when it’s completely wet out? If so was it still warm and comfortable to wear? The manufacturer suggests to wear it with nothing underneath. Are they not too hot when you’re hiking up hill? All the best mate.
I absolutely love the Buffalo shirts, even when you get soaked through you stay warm as long as you keep moving, and they dry out incredibly quickly. Definitely one though for cold weather, but I'm usually always cold so wear it quite a lot 😂. They dry out from your body heat so they recommend to wear it on its own but I usually prefer to wear a baselayer, and if I feel like I'm getting g too hot you can unzip the sides.
When you sent me that video of the hailstones, I just knew you were having such a wonderful time 😅
Next time you can come with me 😊
Nice video 👍
Thanks 😊
That clip to secure the fly to the frame looks as fragile as fook. 3ful with their version of this tent have a better design altogether.
If you are on about the Taiji 2, the method to attach is almost identical. Both use plastic clips to attach the fly to the poles. Used this a fair few times now and have no concerns that the clips are going to break.
Perez Eric Garcia Jason Robinson Jessica
Thanks for watching 👍
AMAZING mate
Thanks Andy 😁
Cracking video, we have a very similar style of making videos 😉👍
Thanks for watching 👍 😁
Brilliant video stu. I loved this one I got a diffrent vibe from it in a good way Very interactive with the camera amazing. Keep it up
Thanks Josh, couldn't film quite as much as I wanted due to the pesky midgies but glad you enjoyed it 😊
loving the content .. got yourself another subscriber
Thanks for watching and the sub, really appreciate it 😊
Nice one Stuart, aye the midges are a pest! You should head up to the Scottish highlands sometime to experience our version of the wee blighters 😆 What tent you going for?
I did a camp in Glencoe a while back and I'd never seen anything like it, I had to hide in my tent for a while on that camp too. I'm thinking about getting the Fjallraven Absiko Lite 2 ⛺
Nice one Stu. Though I do think those midges were bad karma for past use of the screaming banshee otherwise known as electric pump😂Haha.
Hahahaha yes you might be right 😂
I may have mentioned once or twice before, but I hate 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟. Im pleased for you that a breeze rescued your camp. Why would people set of fireworks in the Fells!!!!!! Still at least you had some soothing music to go with them 🙄. I felt your pain Stu 👍
Hopefully as the colder weather arrives the fells will get quieter 😎 Thanks for watching 👍
Loved the video - it’s so annoying about the pesky 🪰 hazmat suit next time?
That's a great idea 😂
🤣I thought you were going to do some honey collecting with that shield on at first...I'm sorry cos of them little sods it was your worst camp(any camp for me would be the worst Camp👍)...Bit of good news...my wife was thinking about buying a tent cos a couple of my sons go camping and told her how amazing it was...you can imagine the fear I felt, but while out walking a few weeks ago we sat eating our picnic in Goyt Valley and she got bit really bad by ants and said stuff the camping idea...I was so upset you couldn't imagine my disappointment😪😏😂😂😂...A descent midgie repellent is a Hamlet cigar...don't smoke it just light it...tried that citronella candle but that is useless and stinks...also lavender oil as a rub on...if that don't work at least you will smell nice...Yeah Garlic Bread(its the future)...might not keep the bugs away but will keep your mates away...Bloody Parma Violets are my wife's favourite...How dare you try to start her thinking about going camping again...going to unsubscribe now🤣...not a sodding chance...love every vid you post especially when you visit the Peak District...Cheers Les.🙂👍
Thanks Les, only a matter of time though till your wife buys a tent and before you know it you will be hooked on camping. May see you on top of the fells one day 😎
@@StuartThow Noooo!!!!...Might see you when I start walking again full time when I retire in December 👍
Great video Stuart. Looked like a great day, apart from those pesky midge 🪰. Thanks for sharing mate 👍
Yeah I can't wait for winter and not having to deal with midgies, thanks for watching 😊
Meant to ask, what make is the little chair? Thanks.
It's the Helinox Chair Zero 👍
Ha! Those bloody midgies! If you're looking for a bigger tent, not too heavy and not too expensive, Ib can recommend the Sierra Designs Clearwing 2 Tent. (They do another opne something wing but can't remember the name) It's huge inside and has nice vertical walls so when sleeping it doesn't slope in on you. Outdoor gear review does a great review on it and I have to say, I'm 6'3 and I love it. Good quality and about 2kg in weight, maybe just under. As for Midgies, there's that new flextail thing i've seen that you attach to your arm and people are saying it helps but yes, citronella candle all day long :-)
I will have a look at the Sierra Designs tent, I'm about 6'2 so struggle for space in a lot of tents. Thanks for watching and the recommendation, really appreciate it 😁
Re the midges....If you can find any bog myrtle, rub that on you. Easy to find in Scotland but not in the peaks.
I'd have rubbed anything on me if I thought it would help 😂
Just discovered your channel, nice video 👍. What are those pants hot and what stove you using? Thanks Btw loved the night time lapse.
The trousers are Revolution Race GP Pro, and the stove I used on this camp is just a cheap Vango folding stove I picked up from Go Outdoors years ago. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it 🙂
Enjoyed that 👌 So I liked and subscribed
Awesome, thank you! 😊
😂
Other options... 1. Small filter cone that sits on top of mug. Uses cut down filters. 2. Buy a pack of filter bags (like tea bags but with draw strings), Fill them beforehand, put in zip lock bag or even vacume seal them. Just as good coffee only much cheaper and lighter.
That's definitely another option if you want just a regular coffee 👍
Beautiful place.....watching from Pakistan👉🌲
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, really appreciate it. 👍
Nice job .......
Thank you 😊
Geniunly impressed by how good that espresso shot came out, but you definitely need to work on your latte art skills!
Yes I'd give my latte art skills a 1/10 😂, the machine though is brilliant! I think it may end up on most of my camps now!
Like you said, surprised by how much of the wreckage is still there. That weather is the perfect conditions to practice the map reading skills! Maybe you need to start a checklist before leaving the house and car :P
A checklist is a good idea 😂
Thank you for your review. I'll keep following, because you give such useful information. All the best!
Thank you 😊
Sheep in Ireland would never come up to you like that. That must be people , given them food all the time
Yeah I think you may be right, never had them come up to me like that before
You camped directly on their path! Big oops! Good camp pizza recipe/ method! Beautiful setting! N nice drone shots!
Thanks for watching 👍
Do you know, I think if you really like your coffee to be luxurious this would be great bit of kit. The fact it can be charged on the go is a cool feature. It looks quite robust and is a good shape and size to fit in a pack. I can't say I'd get one myself as I like rough coffee but I think it's got potential. Cheers for posting Stu. Cheers pal 👍
I wasn't sure I would use it as much as I do, but I use it a lot. I do like a fancy coffee though 😂 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, really appreciate it 👍
Best visitors to have! Adorable
Yes it definitely made it a memorable trip, better than being bothered by people 😂
Used mine a LOT more than I thought I would. At work a lot, and now sits on my kitchen worktop most of the time. Didn’t think I’d take it camping but I do. Weighs less than a can of beer. Straight espresso for me though 🤣 none of this posh frothy milk 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah don't think I'm ready yet for straight espresso! I wasn't even drinking coffee when you did your review but my daughter persuaded me to give it a go and now a nice prosh frothy latte is my favourite hot drink now! 😂 I reckon I will probably use this on most of my camps especially through the winter. Thanks for watching Chris, really appreciate it 😊
Sheep don't eat meat. But they would’ve eaten the bread or tomato.
They definitely wanted to have a taste of the pizza 😂
Nice review deluxe kit. However I only do ultralight being a codger. My backpack weighs less than 500 gms. Of course they should have call it the t’wild, then it would have been Outin t’wild🤣
Hahaha yes this is definitely a luxury item for a camp, not one for the ultralight 😂
