Greetings and welcome to the Penguin Note channel. I'm Aidan. I am a diehard fan of the St. Louis Blues. I am also a St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis CITY SC, St. Louis BattleHawks, Toronto Raptors, and (a somewhat) Kansas City Chiefs fan.
In this channel, I post content about sports. Teams in sports, people in sports, moments in sports, sports miscellaneous, (and a little non-sports related content on the side).

An Updated Look at MLS Branding
It’s another video where I complain about MLS team names. Except this time I complain about the logos, sorry, “badges” as well. I put branding in the title mainly because I want to focus on both names and logos.
Compared to other logos, Major League Soccer has the least inspiring branding. Nothing but seals and badges with typography and wordmarks and no real action. And once again, the names are bad. Two many FCs and a lot of European ripoffs.
Sounds like a future video to rename most MLS teams and give all of them new logos (badges).
Also sorry that uploads have been slowing down in the past few months. I’ve had a lot going on and I’m trying to find time to make the best content possible.

I’m counting this as a riot (and also a controversial call). A bad call incited a riot. Sports riots usually involve burning stuff. But what about when it happens at a stadium? No one, the refs, the Browns FANS, Paul Tagliabue, Browns owner Al Lerner and President Carmen Policy, the NFL, is innocent(except maybe the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars, they were victims of this circumstan...

Dumb video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤣🤣❤❤❤
Pointless video as all of your complaints could be answer by "MLS wanted to appeal to the international market". You shouldn't really give your opinion about something you don't know about.
Devils fan here, the first owners actually asked the archbishop of Newark if it was okay with them if they’re called the devils when they were in the process of moving to jersey. The archbishop said yes and three Stanley cups later the rest is history.
This was funny great job!
Why make a video about MLS club names and logos without knowing anything about the actual sport? OMG, they have FC in the name, it is trash! lol
Tbf you're still getting it wrong 🫠 That was the Inter logo, not the Milan logo. Long story short, they're either called Inter, Internazionale Mee-LAN-o Or Inter mill-AN, the English way (Inter Milan is not an official name, just a lazy nickname given by English broadcasters, making a distinction where none was needed) AC Milan are the only club who are referred to as simply Milan. But in this instance it is correct to pronounce the English word "Milan" in an Italian accent (but without the o) thus becoming "MEE-lan". This is because they are actually called Milan even in their full name, 'Associazione Calcio Milan' never Milano. This is due to being founded by an English man (however this has nothing to do with the St Ambrose Cross in their badge, the flag of the city of Milano. St Ambrose Cross predates England's St Georges Cross. That is not an England flag on their badge.) Are you confused yet? Let me know if I can make it even more confusing. Tl;dr: Inter are never called "Meelan". They are just Inter, or Inter Milan if you're a casual. If you hear someone say they support "Milan" you must NEVER ask "which one?" because they are always referring to the red and black one. There is only one Milan. Inter vs Milan. Milan vs Inter.
I find this funny Europeans don't like how the MLS is copying European club naming traditions an American are doing the same It is nice to have a mixture of unique and more traditional names. But I don't mind the use of AFC,FC,SC,CS,CF most every single football team in the world is this I think it's like complaining that doctor uses DR at the start of their name
And to be honest the major American sports leagues have some awful logos and names. Being given a nickname when your club/team is created just has rotten taste my mouth nicknames should be something that the fan crate I'm a Brighton fan and I nickname evolved and I actually think for some of the teams in the MLS but don't happen nicknames the fan should be able to the side themselves who they are not some corporation greedy owner
St Louis can be the hell cat's that can be your nickname doesn't have to be in your name Manchester United the red devils, brighten are the seagulls Southampton are the saints etc people know the nicknames even across the pond but they're not in the name
Guy with soccer knowledge of a donut (his words, not mine) complains about the naming conventions of the sport.
“New York fans don’t want to watch a team in jersey” Jets and giants 👁️👄👁️ Also the bigger Kansas City is in Missouri and is where the chiefs and royals play
The giants and the jets have had years of history and championships won in New York City before leaving to build in Jersey. Red Bulls have never played a home game in NY and have 0 history and little presence outside of North Jersey. Not to mention 0 championships
NYCFC should be included in the "City" category as the inclusion of city in the name is purposeful and is supposed to connect it to the other City Football Group Teams.
nhl biggest issue is not expansion its diversity coverage unless you are canadian or hardcore american hockey fan most people dont care or known what the nhl is. the nhl has stagnated for over 15 years in terms of growth.
dude all euro teams have fc on them its a trademark thing most people just called the name without fc on it lol mls doing what the rest of the word has done for years
Hopefully, by 2030, NHL haz those 36 teams.
If that's works for the NHL. Maybe by 2040, they will expand to 40 teams. ARIZONA COYOTES, PORTLAND LUMBERJAX, SASKATOON CARIBOU, HAMILTON HAMMERS AND NASHVILLE TO THE EASTERN CONFERENCE. OTHER POSSIBLE TEAMS... SAN DIEGO ARMADA, OKLAHOMA TWISTERS, SAN ANTONIO TOROS, NEW ORLEANS NAVIGATORS, BALTIMORE ADMIRALS AND HARTFORD COLONIALS IF WHALERS ISN'T AVAILABLE.
Do you imagine that Real Madrid name were Madrid Merengues or Barcelona Blaugranas. That's so American, and branding pointed to all american-invented sports. If you want to have a successful football league you got to open to how the rest of the world does it. To me is perfect that we do not have new MLS teams like Charlotte Royals, or Los Angeles Blackgoldens, what's that? Are we talking about baseball, hockey or what? Football clubs, Soccer clubs are what they are. There are few teams branded like that because of their history attached to the culture of American sports, but new franchises are pointing to grow and being known as simple as possible.
NASCAR or wrestling?
I agree I hate the normal soccer name of FC. City and SC are not much better I will compromise with United. I don’t mind Real and sporting as names. Real means royal so change the name to Royal or Royals. I also really don’t like how soccer goes by city name. Like hockey it’s Blues vs Lightning. I agree with your point, multiple teams play in the same city. Like Minnesota vs Chicago could be a number of different sports. Go Blues 🏒!
The FC on the Fire stayed because CFFC is a palindrome
If you are at all interested in the Red Bull one... thats worth a bit of a dive as they have majority ownership in five bigger teams world wide so far (which they added Red Bull to names of all). They currently own NY Red Bulls (USA), RB Leipzig (Germany), RB Bragantino and Bragantino II (Brazil), RB Salzburg (Austria) and RB Omiya Ardija (Japan) with minority stake in teams like Leeds (England) and Paris FC (France)
A simple trip to wikipedia would tell you that every single MLS team has a nickname or multiple nicknames for their clubs and fans. What's the difference between Orlando FC putting a lion their badge and their nickname being the lions and the NFL lions logo? Are you mad that it's on a badge? Are you mad that instead of putting "The Lions" on the badge they but "Orlando FC?" This whole video just feels like an incredibly unecessary and unwanted thinkpiece on nothing.
Their official name should be Orlando Lions, not some generic City SC crap.
Did an American just say Europeans have big egos 🤣
Color me shocked dude, I thought the FC stood for fried chicken
Bring back the San Diego Loyal. SDFC is lame.
As a crew fan I very proud of the team name
14:03 W spray paint
12:22 YOOOO ST. LOUIS is also my team I’ve been to a bunch of there games. W
In england there are Manchester united and manchester city, in spain there is real madrid and atletico madrid. I understand what you’re saying w multiple clubs in the same city/ state but that’s just how the sport works everywhere else and every other sport. So that point is kinda null and void tbh.
The truly disturbing part is that these teams pay millions of dollars to consulting firms to come up with their branding just to get a bunch of F.C.s and other unoriginal ideas. But if that's how they want to spend their money...
Every MLS team has a nickname either for their club or their fans. Just because you don't see it on the badge doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Also what's unoriginal? Each badge except for a few either have a omage to the teams nickname or to the history of the city they are on. I have to ask if we are to look at every professional sports team in texas they all generally reference two things. The first group references the Texas law enforcement or cowboys with The Rangers, the Cowboys, The Stars, The Mavericks, The Spurs. The second group references the space program with the Astros and the Rockets. Finally you have the super original "The Texans." Let's stop pretending the the team names/logos of other professional sports leagues in the US are remotely unique.
@jasonburmeister4746 we would have to be pretending in the first place to stop. American sports teams names are in fact unique, because they are real names that reference real history and culture about the area the teams play in. I'll gladly take another space themed name like Houston Apollos over some generic non-descriptive Houston FC shit.
@@mech-x-xavious The Houston MLS teams name is the Houston Dynamo. You are so focused on the FC part of the badge that you complete miss the rest of the badge. What does LA have to do with Rams. What does Las Vegas have to do with raiders. What does Tennessee being called the Titans have to do with the history of the state. A lot of porfessional sports teams names are just as manufacture as you seem to think the MLS team names are. NFL teams threaten relocation regulalry because they understand just how little their names mean to the cities/states they represent. The names for many American professional teams have been devalued by re-location.
@@jasonburmeister4746I’m not so worried about their name as much as I am their badge in Houston’s case. The badge makes it seem like they belong in MLB not MLS
FC or SC is tradition of football SC for Sport Club
Minnesota should change their name the Loons. Loons is already their team nickname (as in "GO YOU LOONS!").
So why not be the Minnesota Loons
14:54 no
02:36 these logos look like freshmen highschoolers designed them xD
01:42 the one called FC is the real representative. Galaxy and Red Bulls don't even play in LA County or even the state of new york
LA Galaxy does play in LA County
@@RyderTCG_Adventures LA Galaxy also has 6 times more rings than LAFeCes
01:21 every team thats not called in a traditional way but uses cringe nicknames should be deleted from existence* These cringe names are the main reason why no one's passionate for any American sports team
Why is Sporting Kansas City false advertising?
Neither MLS team in New York being called the Cosmos is a crime and massive marketing blunder
Cosmos is a stupid name and they would never be able to overtake NYCFC if they would join
@@NoName-rq6bgthey're much bigger than CFG new york. Cosmos made football in America. They need to come back. The only real NYC football club. Red Bull and CFG are just fake clubs.
Either they name the teams such like all sport teams in Us (Houston Astros/Toronto Raptors) or gain a nickname that overshadows the club name. Best example C.D Guadalajara is better known as Chivas
I think it just shows the different audience the MLS has been trying to shoot for. In the 90s, MLS was mostly trying to go for the American Sports audience, while now they seem to be trying to be taken a bit more seriously and be easily marketable on the International stage. Personally I agree with that, it definitely made me take MLS a bit more seriously. I also generally like the idea of the fans lovingly giving the club a nickname after a few generations, like the Blues, the Villans, and the Red Devils.
Two Things: Why not make an all Canadian division since travel within Canada would be easier and you'd play off national pride for them. And just add 2 more games to your schedule so you'd have 3 and 3 for STL/KC/CHI no rotation needed.
I've lived in Europe for 24 years, they are logos... But I will say/ask/assume none of these are actually clubs are they? No American professional sports teams are clubs, in any sport. Clubs have members and play teams at many levels of the sport, the Dallas Cowboys and LA Lakers etc. don't have youth teams do they? American teams are franchises not clubs.
We have franchises and call the sport soccer, so it looks really stupid when we put FC in the name of a team.
@@AmbushRL. Yeah I'm from New Zealand so we also call it Soccer. I don't really care if people use FC or SC but they aren't clubs, not that I know of anyway. I think they use it just to fit into the style of European clubs because people made so much fun of the old logos and names, probably why they also use FC, I know its a small thing but it just kind of grinds me.
MLS is an American league that has an identity crisis... Somebody needs tell them they're American, not European!!!!
This isn't just a European thing it's a world thing. Look at any league in any country and they all have badges. I don't think we as Americans have any right to determine what the logos look like when we didn't support this league in the first place. Much of the MLS's success and growth in the last decade is most due to the league being embraced by latino immigrants or first generation latino Americans. The culture of the NFL, or NHL, or NBA shouldn't dictate the culture of the MLS or soccer/football itself. Badges are an integral part of football and have been for a long time. We don't just get to demand more creative logos to fit the "American" mold. If you really need flashy colors and ridiculous symbols to feed your lizard brain then so be it. That doesn't mean we have to burn soccer/football to the ground as we know it to make us "Americans" happy.
@@jasonburmeister4746Yes we should, because it's our league, so it should reflect our culture.
@@jasonburmeister4746 but don't you know that America is the center of the universe? lol
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are in the USL Championship. The fact that the Mutiny weren’t named the Rowdies was one of the reasons they didn’t do very well.
The reason for all the Uniteds, Citys, Sportings, FC, etc., is because when MLS began, they listened to a bunch of dorks in the so called “supporters’ groups”who hadn’t even seen a soccer ball before 1994, but were suddenly “experts on the game, and thus decided that “Amurica” and Canada had to mimic the European/Latin clubs with team names in order to look “proper.” The “boomer” fans are the ones responsible for Sounders, Earthquakes, Dynamo, Whitecaps, Timbers and so forth, team names that actually have heritage and meaning.
Not to mention, NYCFC was launched by the owners of Man City.... The Al-Nyan family of Abu Dhabi, who primarily uses the "CITY" name and the powder blue color. NYCFC was the 1st MLS team with a sportswashing owner.
While I'm willing to give some points to early MLS teams for trying to be creative (even though names like the Wiz were very corny), one thing I can't forgive is how hideous some of those logos were. Especially Miami Fusion FC; their logo looks like it was made by a 9 year old in MS paint. Also, I still wish CF Montreal didn't drop "impact" from their name, but at the end of the day they're my least favourite team so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.
It was the 90s. Just look at the kits. Extremely 90s.
Carolina should have been united and it would have been understandable
CF Montreal should have gone all the way and call themselves “Club de Foot Canadien”
@@sdeepj funny as that might be, Toronto and Vancouver wouldn't be amused
Penguin Note, I’ve got just 2 words to say to you: Thank You. Thank you, Penguin Note, for speaking the truth about MLS’s boring logos and team names. I wish there were more people like you who are willing to do what you do and speak out something that needs change in the worst way. I’m honored and proud to be a fan of you and your channel. 👍👍
I’m glad the New England Revolution kept their name as such the entire time… Now if only they’d go back to the old logo…
I do remember the Revs thumping their chest in their new logo reveal saying they weren't an FC
@PenguinNote67 they're barely an SC. That, and there's an actual slighty-more-successful football team that occupies the same stadium. If they wanted to be truly "revolutionary" maybe they should keep the new R-crest and change to "Revolution 1776" or something.
Last i check America declared independence to get away from the status quo of Europe. Now theyre desperate to chase European trends.
10:31 actually Columbus Crew was listening to the fans TWICE Columbus also was ALMOST MOVED to Austin which the VERY 1ST reason of SAVE THE CREW which happened in 2017 And for Salt Lake "REAL" means "ROYAL" in Spanish like "Real Madrid" so in English would be "Royal" Salt Lake, there's is the crown after all
Kinda funny how they decided to just give Austin their own team anyways😂
@black_baguette very ironic
You should do a video on MLB logos
I briefly talked about them in a video I made about a year ago th-cam.com/video/W-ovgvyLl5U/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
