i’m a graphic designer. 80% of the rebrands in this video weren’t done because an owner wanted something new, or to “look minimalist”. these teams are brands, and have to function like one too. the logo needs to still be recognizable in a 25x25 pixel grid on the smallest phone that can still run android kitkat. rebrands i would consider “bad” are things like the pistons, where they just went from one basketball to a slightly less detail basketball, it didn’t improve anything. most of the rebrands being called “bad” in this video are actually quite an improvement in legibility, recognizability, and uniqueness aka not looking like something that already exists. again these teams are multi million dollar brands, i understand sports invoke a feeling in people, but they are businesses first. no one is complaining that the apple or microsoft logo is too boring
“Uniqueness” bruh get out of here most logos nowadays are either just text or a circle with text. The mindset to make logos look more legible are the exact reasons why so many look extremely boring nowadays.
@@RocksSocks-k2m none of the logos in this video were just text or just a circle so i’m not sure what you’re talking about. the goal of a logo isn’t to be legible at all, just recognizable, so again, i’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here. seems you genuinely may have lost the plot while you were typing

As a diehard Timberwolves fan the Rebrand we did was great but i am nostalgic for the mid 90s wolf through the forest. Thoughts on the brewers rebrand?
I... I've never met a person who liked the Flaming Horse look... And I'm a Pistons fan in Detroit. When they started bringing back the old look in the early 00's, Pistons fans were ecstatic. The simple basketball logo is beloved, even with the team being terrible.
As someone who lived in northern Virginia, what’s even worse about the WFT/Commanders fiasco is that they had been considering new branding for YEARS before actually rebranding. I’m talking since around 2010 names like the red wolves or Washington Hogs were being thrown around. Come 2020 the best they got is Washington Football Team? Sad
Im fairly sure the Chicago fire thing was over trademark-ability since every fire department uses that cross, making it part of the cultural zeitgeist (aka something in common use). Xerox and the “Stop saying Xerox when you use a copier” campaign comes to mind.
I'm honestly surprised the Utah Jazz rebrand was only in dishonorable mentions. They went from having a fresh modernized version of the note logo with navy blue to some really plain looking black and yellow jerseys. I'm a Jazz fan myself and I can't understand for the life of me what the front office was thinking when they gave the green light for that!
Clippers have nautical roots. It’s wild to me people don’t know that a “Clipper” is literally a ship and that when they were the San Diego Clippers it made incredible sense because of the shipyards and clipper ships in San Diego. Because of that I actually kinda like the new clippers logo
Redskins to Commanders is the worst. Have yet to meet someone in the DMV that actually likes it. Commander's merchandise remains on the shelves. Redskins had one the best sports logos of all time
I was hoping you would mention the Blue Jays uniform overhaul in 2004. The lack of the split lettering killed the identity of their jerseys at that time. For a rebrand that didn't make this video, I would say the Anaheim Angels Disney uniforms from 1997-2001. The mock vests and a lack of halo didn't jive with me.
Speaking as a Pistons fan, I don't think the current rebrand was all that terrible. Sure it was a downgrade, but the look itself isn't ugly, the jerseys remain unchanged, and both logos were used around the time the Pistons were good (Current one is modern Bad Boys, previous one during the Go to Work era- kind of in conjunction with the horse head)
I might be wrong but I believe many franchises changed their jerseys to be more social media logo friendly, hence the many circle/crest/coat of arms logos
How was the "angry ram" logo iconic? It had been around only since 2000, and it was not the logo when they won Super Bowl XXXIV. Now the ram head they used in the 60s and 70s, that's iconic.
Truth is tbh I don’t think the rams have ever truly had an iconic logo, the most iconic part of their branding was their helmets. That had been consistent in form pretty much throughout their whole existence, except for today.
I actually love the current stars logo, although the old one was awesome as well. I remember when the rebrand was unveiled many stars fans hated the loss of gold, but in hindsight I think that thinning out the accent colors to focus on Victory green was the right choice. The stars current cyberpunk 3rd jerseys are cool as hell too. Surprised you didn’t mention the “mooterus” from the early 2000s!
Sadly/ As a lifelong Bullet fan that was just another Betrayal by the ownership, one of many knives in the back. The original team slogan was "Faster than A Speeding Bullet". Not a fan of the Wizards or Pissers at all. Go Wes, Go Big E. Go Phil, Go Gus, Go Earl!
The name change was because of a desire to move away from the violent imagery of guns and in response to the rise of gun violence. It has nothing to do with being "canceled".
@@CGrascal Does not matter. After the team moved from Chicago, it was named after the original Baltimore Bullets basketball team of the 40s that went under. The Unselds would have been better.
It’s funny to think that Shannon Sharpe was the one saying that older Native Americans won’t speak out over the so-called “offensive” Redskins name yet younger ones do. Of course no matter who they are, this younger generation is offended by everything so of course Sharpe would’ve said something like that.
Personally I am not a fan of the New England Revolution's rebrand for the MLS. The flag logo was fine, I don't get why they had to change it to a firefighter crest.
The Canucks' rebranding with the corporately-inspired Orca in '97 is among the very worst rebrands in sports. A logo totally irrelevant to the team's name, heritage and history. A fanbase dividing logo. That's horrid branding. A recoloured Speeding Skate in 💙💚🤍 or better yet, the Johnny Canuck lumberjack is the way to go. 💙💚🤍🪓🧔🏻🏒🌲
Part of what made the Chicago Fire rebrand so terrible was that they were throwing away their own branding in favor of a color scheme and royal crown motif that were both already in use, and being used better, by another team in the same league. They looked like Real Salt Lake's minor league affiliate. It's a bit like the Chicago Bears deciding one day to go all-in on Nordic imagery and to wear purple uniforms.
It's funny that you actually like those NBA cartoon logos of the 2000s. People hated them when they came out and now you want them back, I have to question this whole video because of this choice.
Maybe just depends but I like the pistons horse and raptors dinosaur a lot better. And the jerseys with those designs at least seemed like they were trying where as now I feel like I can make most of these designs with how basic these jerseys and logos are. With that being said I think the new bucks logo is an improvement from the other ones so not all of the new ones are bad. I also grew up in the vince carter raptors era watching basketball as a kid. So nostalgia can also be a little part of it for some people aside from just preferences.
The Washington Wizards current logo resembles a garlic bulb or an orange. One rebrand that deserves some mention is my hometown Calgary Flames and that annoying “fire snorting horse”logo! It was first debuted at the 1998 Entry Draft. It sucked then as it does now as it used a third jersey.
If the Raptors were to revert back to the original look, the only change I would make is changing the word "Toronto" from grey to white so it stands out a bit more. Also, I gotta say, the Fisherman logo looks amazing on the Islanders' reverse retro jerseys. Just goes to show what a little recolouring can do.
the jazz had the coolest jersey with the mountains. changing to these new plain ones was the dumbest change . nobody outside of the state of utah would buy this new jersey.
I'm a diehard Kraken fan and I know some people think the logo is too big, they hit it out of the park and shouldn't change anytime soon, thats what alternates and third jerseys are for.
There is one thing you missed about the Miami Marlins. They have another jersey with a new name and logo that I can't stand called the sugar kings. It feels like a triple A team to me.
A quick note about the wordmark on the new Clippers logo: I believe there's a league mandate now that for new logos the location name is required to be in the logo in some capacity.
A big one for me is the Winnipeg Bluebombers (a Canadian football team). I get that the W was their logo way back when, so there is a degree of classic-ness to it, but it's still just a W!
1. Washington Football Team was actually a banging name because it was unique. People clowned on it until they realised and it actually is cool 2. Raptors is the worst rebrand of all time. None of the teams above went from incredibly iconic all time great logo to absolute joke.
Mine is the Nets. Probably angst as a New Jersian who wants her team back, but the new logos are so bland and sterile. Any identity the team had is gone. The NJ alternate logo they had is by far their best, and I dream of days where they go play in Prudential with that logo. Unfortunately, slapping the word Brooklyn onto them is good for cash despite tearing away any identity they have as they fade into the shadow of the Knicks.
Panthers rebrand was great, the leaping cat is a fun logo but it’s both very 90s and associated with two decades of failure. The shield is a good logo and now is associated with the best era in team historu
The Rams main logo if it's a hat it felt like a knockoff dodger hat, but the Alternate logo which is Rams head and looks like an old one should be the main one, the commanders name should be for me the Redhogs since their offense is called the Hogs
Milwaukee Brewers in the 1990’s when they dumped the ball and glove for an awful logo, and tried to go green, blue, and yellow jersey colors. Only saving grace they brought it back in 2019.

Great video! I was surprised the Brewers mid 90s rebrand wasnt on the list.Changing the iconic glove logo to anything else was criminal.
i’m a graphic designer.
@@kidthekiddo8996 I said “circle with text” not “just a circle” please actually read things before you try to talk about them. Also YES THERE ARE, the Detroit Pistons logo is literally just a circle with text.
@@RocksSocks-k2m idk if you noticed but that “circle” is a basketball…
@@kidthekiddo8996 it’s a 2d image that is circular meant to represent a basketball, which is a spherical object that in 2d form is a circle because of how shapes work.
In other words, the logo that is a circle is a circle. Sure it has small lines in the circle that are meant to make it seem like a basketball because it is a basketball team, but that doesn’t mean the logo itself isn’t just a circle with very little to make it distinct from any other circle based logo in the league(of which there are a few but it is by far the most egregious in its terrible mundane-ness)
Real quick you said you are a graphic designer, judging by the fact you don’t seem to understand how shapes work and that you show a level of reading comprehension comparable to a fifth grader, could you tell me how you got your job? Just curious because if your dumbass and frankly terrible graphic design opinions are the standard in that career path it seems like a pretty easy job to get into. I might even give it a try.
Meet me. I loved that look and they should have stuck with the first colour iteration with the teal.
Sad
Columbus crew HAD a great crest. Now it’s shit.
as a Dallas fan i personally dont mind the current logo but i do miss the old logo at times
Same. I absolutely loved the 1.0RR and thought naïvely that they were here to stay. But I also like the new logo idk what this guy is taking about 😂
But what about the Mooterus?
@@donaldpaluga never really liked it
Pistons definitely had that logo in 2004
I keep seeing mixed logo histories for the Pistons. It's still better than the bubble letters
@@PenguinNote67 I just remember them beating down my Lakers with that Pistons basketball mid court when they did it 😔 lol
@@thetempest33ify Which time? lol
Im fairly sure the Chicago fire thing was over trademark-ability since every fire department uses that cross, making it part of the cultural zeitgeist (aka something in common use). Xerox and the “Stop saying Xerox when you use a copier” campaign comes to mind.
Imo the only reason Chicago Fire isnt #1 is bc most of the city didnt even know about it
I'm honestly surprised the Utah Jazz rebrand was only in dishonorable mentions. They went from having a fresh modernized version of the note logo with navy blue to some really plain looking black and yellow jerseys. I'm a Jazz fan myself and I can't understand for the life of me what the front office was thinking when they gave the green light for that!
The Jazz rebrand was the worst in the NBA history. The yellow didn't even look good, it was like a highlighter. The new uniforms are awesome though.
No mention of the bullets not having bullets in the logo?
NBA has so many bad logos. They're all just a stylized basketball. Imagine if as many NHL logos were stylized hockey pucks.
I would like to see what you’re top 10 best rebrands are
I'll write that down
@@PenguinNote67 Ok cool
Clippers have nautical roots. It’s wild to me people don’t know that a “Clipper” is literally a ship and that when they were the San Diego Clippers it made incredible sense because of the shipyards and clipper ships in San Diego. Because of that I actually kinda like the new clippers logo
Redskins to Commanders is the worst. Have yet to meet someone in the DMV that actually likes it. Commander's merchandise remains on the shelves. Redskins had one the best sports logos of all time
They HAD to part ways with that terrible name. Tho I do agree that "Commanders" is very bland, despite them being a D.C. team.
@electricbolt8579 do you also think they should've ditched the logo? If they were named Warriors would the logo be acceptable?
The Rams logo also gave the nickname the croissant
I might be wrong but I believe many franchises changed their jerseys to be more social media logo friendly, hence the many circle/crest/coat of arms logos
That's a good theory. I wouldn't be shocked if changing media influenced logo changes
The Washington Bullets were the first team name to be "cancelled".
@CGrascal actually it was also because the Bullets' owner (at the time) was friends with the Isreal Prime Minister who had just been assassinated
@@CGrascal Does not matter. After the team moved from Chicago, it was named after the original Baltimore Bullets basketball team of the 40s that went under.
The team had a dachshund named Bullet that it let run around the court during half time. Its slogan was "Faster than a Speeding Bullet". Whatever the reason the Wizards is a terrible name. The Unselds would have been better.
@@CGrascal And yet the name of the teams was cancelled. Wizards is a terrible name. Should have been named the Unselds.
Thank you for covering the Impact. The rebrand still hurts to this day...
The Sabres should do the Bison head, but in Royal blue and yellow colourway.
1:03 it’s funny cause Native Americans have been protesting the name change and want them to become the redskins again
It’s funny to think that Shannon Sharpe was the one saying that older Native Americans won’t speak out over the so-called “offensive” Redskins name yet younger ones do. Of course no matter who they are, this younger generation is offended by everything so of course Sharpe would’ve said something like that.
You know why Redskins was retired? an event that happened in the summer of 2020
@@michaelleroy9281 yeah and Natives Americans protested the name change then and still protest it now
@@michaelleroy9281 Nice bait.
Personally I am not a fan of the New England Revolution's rebrand for the MLS. The flag logo was fine, I don't get why they had to change it to a firefighter crest.
As a Revs fan I hate it
I think they missed, but the crayon flag needed to go. Now, why they did the rebrand immediately following a supporters shield season baffles me.
They went back to the original look!!! How was the biggest flop????
The Canucks' rebranding with the corporately-inspired Orca in '97 is among the very worst rebrands in sports. A logo totally irrelevant to the team's name, heritage and history. A fanbase dividing logo. That's horrid branding. A recoloured Speeding Skate in 💙💚🤍 or better yet, the Johnny Canuck lumberjack is the way to go.
💙💚🤍🪓🧔🏻🏒🌲
How do you miss the Vancouver Canucks V rebrand?
This is a family video that logo should be rated R 😂
@@michaelleroy9281who asked that
@@michaelleroy9281it’s a terrible
Part of what made the Chicago Fire rebrand so terrible was that they were throwing away their own branding in favor of a color scheme and royal crown motif that were both already in use, and being used better, by another team in the same league. They looked like Real Salt Lake's minor league affiliate. It's a bit like the Chicago Bears deciding one day to go all-in on Nordic imagery and to wear purple uniforms.
It's funny that you actually like those NBA cartoon logos of the 2000s. People hated them when they came out and now you want them back, I have to question this whole video because of this choice.
Well art is subjective 🤷🏾♂️
Maybe just depends but I like the pistons horse and raptors dinosaur a lot better. And the jerseys with those designs at least seemed like they were trying where as now I feel like I can make most of these designs with how basic these jerseys and logos are. With that being said I think the new bucks logo is an improvement from the other ones so not all of the new ones are bad. I also grew up in the vince carter raptors era watching basketball as a kid. So nostalgia can also be a little part of it for some people aside from just preferences.
@@AlexWeberg good for you...
The Buffa-Slug logo looks like Trumps hair.
Trump 2024 🎉🎉🎉
No
The joke at the time is it was Barney Rubble's hair.
@@jayp.6166 Thanks! Now I can't un-see it 😂
The Washington Capitals going from the screaming eagle to a wordmark was pretty bad too. They are overdue for a change
I keep thinking the Wizards logo looks like a Volleyball almost
My Favorite Los Angeles Kings Rebrand is Purple, Black, White, Silver, from 1998-2011 👑🟪⬛⬜🥈
Rams did not have an "iconic" logo.
Keep the dinosaur as retro. The current logo is a championship and respected logo. Simple and clean.
The black and silver are iconic!!! What are ya on about me son??
the jazz had the coolest jersey with the mountains. changing to these new plain ones was the dumbest change . nobody outside of the state of utah would buy this new jersey.
I live in Utah. Nobody here bought those jerseys either.
The flaming horse was good??????
The Stars rebrand is is essentially already done. It’s the RR2 both the logo and jersey. Desperately needed to replace that stupid spiked D
I love the wizards logo how it has the Washington Monument, wand with sparkle streak things creating a basketball and W at the top of the star
I hate so much that the NBA teams moved from the cool 90s logos to the current minimalistic ones
The ram head is iconic??????
Dude I love the Buffalo-Slug, I bout the home BuffaSlug jersey
Make matters worse. The Pistons have fired their coach after one season!!?
I'm a diehard Kraken fan and I know some people think the logo is too big, they hit it out of the park and shouldn't change anytime soon, thats what alternates and third jerseys are for.
There is one thing you missed about the Miami Marlins. They have another jersey with a new name and logo that I can't stand called the sugar kings. It feels like a triple A team to me.
A quick note about the wordmark on the new Clippers logo: I believe there's a league mandate now that for new logos the location name is required to be in the logo in some capacity.
If that's the case, that's stupid. But the Jazz don't have a wordmark so are they an exception?
A big one for me is the Winnipeg Bluebombers (a Canadian football team). I get that the W was their logo way back when, so there is a degree of classic-ness to it, but it's still just a W!
You missed out on the Columbus Crew rebrand. It went so poorly that it didn't even make it out of the season it was introduced in.
1. Washington Football Team was actually a banging name because it was unique. People clowned on it until they realised and it actually is cool
2. Raptors is the worst rebrand of all time. None of the teams above went from incredibly iconic all time great logo to absolute joke.
The number under the note on the Jazz jerseys looks more like a square root than a musical note.
Thanks you for including MLS
Thankfully the Raptors are rebranding again this year.
They are?
Panthers rebrand was great, the leaping cat is a fun logo but it’s both very 90s and associated with two decades of failure. The shield is a good logo and now is associated with the best era in team historu
Once always a Canuck, the Vancouver Canucks I love the Vancouver Canucks. I love my hockey team.
As a kid of the 90s and being 8 years old when the fisherman logo came in I thought and still think those were awesome.
The islanders one looks like an ad for toothpaste.
The wave down the bottom looks like toothpaste
Make a video about the best rebrands
Worst rebrands: Pittsburgh Penguins 😮 -- There are no penguins in Pittsbugh!
The Rams main logo if it's a hat it felt like a knockoff dodger hat, but the Alternate logo which is Rams head and looks like an old one should be the main one, the commanders name should be for me the Redhogs since their offense is called the Hogs
Why do I hear the Aerith theme from FF7 in the background of so many TH-cam videos?
0:35 I hate those "LOGO CHNAGES" [sic]!
Milwaukee Brewers in the 1990’s when they dumped the ball and glove for an awful logo, and tried to go green, blue, and yellow jersey colors. Only saving grace they brought it back in 2019.
How can you leave off the disaster that was the New York Jets from 2020(?)-2023???
