- Rebrands. They either work or they don’t. The teams on this list are the latter. I will admit there are some that might be my personal bias.

UPDATE: Congrats to the Panthers on winning the cup and avoiding humiliation. Now bring back the jumping cat
You need more courage to fix fad design than win a cup!
We won’t bring back the logo from the years we where a shit team we don’t want to remember that even if the 07 uniforms where the best it’s from when we sucked the most
The current logo ( along with the team) won the Stanley Cup, so much for that jumping 🐈 cat
@@michaelleroy9281 dosn't matter what you have on a jersey, "Giant Douche or Turd Sandwich Debate" (South Park), only Cup matters!
Even as a shoulder patch. I do like they incorporated it on center ice for the 30th anniversary
What makes the Rams new logo even worse is the fact that Sofi's roof shape looks like the old logo.
I forgot about that. That never made sense either
Washington could be the Pigskins. Works in 3 ways...the 'Skins name homage, a pigskin is a name for a football and their fans are the Hogs
Oooooo that would be so nice
This is way better than the commanders
I’d say Washington going from the Bullets to Wizards was the worst.
The Cleveland Indians becoming the Guardians. Kind of unimaginative because in the movie Major League, the first picture is quite literally the Guardian Bridge.
I always say that the Guardians and the Commanders sound like the names they give teams in sports movies so that they don't have to pay real teams to use their likenesses. Boring and sterile.
I actually like the redesign for the Toronto raptors while it's not better than the original one The idea of them having the raptor claw on a basketball is actually not a bad idea
they should go back to the purple. if it aint broke dont fix it
@@mikehennessy6766 well looking at today's standards It wouldn't work with these standards of the current NBA unless if they make some kind of modern look to it of the dinosaur it definitely would look cool or add purple to the logo
Considering yor name, and I'm a Penguins fan, my most hated is the 1992 change from the skating penguin to the "robo penguin" and Rangers-imitation road jersey after winning back to back Stanley Cups. I'm glad the skating penguin logo is back.
As someone from Montreal let me tell you, EVERYONE hated the rebrand. Even people who don't watch soccer was pissed. Some people still call the team "l'Impact" in part out of spite.
The biggest problem is that it was all out of nowhere. I can understand a team like the Raptors whose logo was aggressively 90's willing to rebrand, but there really was no demand for a new logo, let alone a new name after almost 30 years.
Montreal Impact was one of my favorite club names when I first got into MLS. Now sometimes I forget they exist lol because of the rebrand!
Montreal Impact was great. While it might seem like a generic 90s sports team name, the fact that it was the same in English or French was a stroke of subtle genius. The fluer-de-lys was iconic, and the name had established history in the city. With so precious little history and tradition compared to other North American pro sports, why would you throw that away to become just another generic Europoser MLS brand?
Also, I don't know how well "Club de Foot" comes across in French, but in English it sounds like clubfoot, which is something you definitely wouldn't want to evoke as a soccer team! 🤣
@@edwardsimpson119 it doesn't sound like clubfoot in French thankfully. However, it's crazy to me they bothered to have the name in French because most of their audience is francophone, but forgot that their audience also says "soccer" and not "football" because this isn't France 🙃
I have a theory about Washington's name change:
1. The delay was because the previous owner had no intention of changing the name. He just figured that if he waited long enough, everyone would forget about it and he could just change the name back.
2. When #1 didn't work, he went through the suggested names and picked the lamest, most generic and most boring name in the list, a name less inspiring then just calling it "Washington Football Team.". Since he had no intention of actually going through with the name change, they had no logo and no branding. The idea here was to take a name so lame, so generic and so uninspiring that it would start a movement to bring back the old name.
On that note, Red Wolves, Razorbacks (you can keep the pig mascot for this one) and even just calling it "Football Team" are improvements over Commanders.
After reading this, this makes some sense
This actually makes a lot of sense
Wow, that just shows how messed up in the head Dan Snyder is. You make a bunch of really good points, except I prefer an actual name (Commanders) over simply calling them the Washington Football Team because it’s boring and sounds more like a soccer team.
@arandomdudeontheinternet5792 at the time, Washington needed a temporary name
Honestly, I think if they brought back the solid W they used as the weird outline one they currently use it would be a huge improvement.
Also, Commanders isn't a bad team name, just not for Washington because it's just too similar to Washington Generals, the team whose existence is to lose to the Harlem Globetrotters.
Totally agree! BRING BACK THE ANGRY RAM!!! Football hasn't been or nearly the same since they changed the logo!!
They shouldn't bring back the angry ram because it was unveiled in St. Louis. Bring back the old ram's head from the 60s.
The Washington Bullets were the first team name to be "cancelled".
The Islanders fisherman always creeped me out, like literally looks like a slasher film where the killer is a fisherman wearing a slicker,he looks menacing and holding the stick helps that killer look
So basically I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER.
@@jimthar17 Yep!You nailed it
WE HATE STAN KRONKE
I'm surprised you didn't include the Broncos ditching the Orange Crush uniforms in the 90s.
Totally agree! The old logo was awesome and the bright orange/ royal was much better than the dull orange they use now.
Personally I am not a fan of the New England Revolution's rebrand for the MLS. The flag logo was fine, I don't get why they had to change it to a firefighter crest.
My Favorite Los Angeles Kings Rebrand is Purple, Black, White, Silver, from 1998-2011 👑🟪⬛⬜🥈
Dude I love the Buffalo-Slug, I bout the home BuffaSlug jersey
It's funny that you actually like those NBA cartoon logos of the 2000s. People hated them when they came out and now you want them back, I have to question this whole video because of this choice.
so many NBA teams as of late seem to be reverting to - were a basketball team so our logo is a basketball and then adding the most basic text or flat logo. Really uninspiring and boring
A literal THIRD of the NBA has a round logo (if you include the Celtics, who are pretty close). It’s so stupid.
The nba has strict branding. Every logo has to include a basketball somewhere on the logo

Where is the Edmonton Elks?
They went from the Eskimos -> Football team -> Elks
Elks are not a good name for a football team
As far as I remember they just went straight to Elks from Eskimos out of the blue. I don't think they were ever the Football Team like Washington
More like Edmonton L's
@@zackyep I think there was a year they went just FT. When the franchise started way back in the day, they were called Elks then changed to Eskimos. Just like the Redskins, a derogatory name that needed a new look.
@@chad6402 aight I just went for a quick check. 2020 they were the Eskimos, 2021 they were the Elks. They had been the Eskimos since 1910 when they first became a CFL team
@@zackyep they went by many names early in their life like many sport franchises. They were briefly called the Elks in 1922. I stand corrected about using EE Football Team for a year.
I love the wizards logo how it has the Washington Monument, wand with sparkle streak things creating a basketball and W at the top of the star
St. Louis Blues don’t have a bad jersey!!! Take them off the list!
At the end of your intro animation, you have like two or three seconds where the music plays but the animation has completed and we are looking at a static image of the “Penguin Note” logo. During that time, you should have the title of the episode appear at the bottom of the screen underneath the circle. I think your intro would be absolutely perfect with that addition!
The Canucks' rebranding with the corporately-inspired Orca in '97 is among the very worst rebrands in sports. A logo totally irrelevant to the team's name, heritage and history. A fanbase dividing logo. That's horrid branding. A recoloured Speeding Skate in 💙💚🤍 or better yet, the Johnny Canuck lumberjack is the way to go.
💙💚🤍🪓🧔🏻🏒🌲
LOGO CHNAGES
Love your content, dude.
Part of what made the Chicago Fire rebrand so terrible was that they were throwing away their own branding in favor of a color scheme and royal crown motif that were both already in use, and being used better, by another team in the same league. They looked like Real Salt Lake's minor league affiliate. It's a bit like the Chicago Bears deciding one day to go all-in on Nordic imagery and to wear purple uniforms.
1:03 it’s funny cause Native Americans have been protesting the name change and want them to become the redskins again
It’s funny to think that Shannon Sharpe was the one saying that older Native Americans won’t speak out over the so-called “offensive” Redskins name yet younger ones do. Of course no matter who they are, this younger generation is offended by everything so of course Sharpe would’ve said something like that.
You know why Redskins was retired? an event that happened in the summer of 2020
@@michaelleroy9281 yeah and Natives Americans protested the name change then and still protest it now
the LA rams current logo makes me think it was supposed to be for an airlines company
i wouldn’t be surprised if I see this logo on the back of an airplane
Looks like a d-3 college football jersey to me
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the Wizards rebrand
As a leafs fan I hate the leafs new logo. It’s horribly executed. It has an odd shape almost more like a crown. It’s not shaped like a leaf, or like a traditional leaf from their history. It looks like someone with no art experience drew it up in 5 minutes.
San Diego Padres going to that Navy Blue & light sand color along with a new logo in 2004 when Petco Park opened. Looked really bland. Glad they changed their colors & look back to Brown & Yellow in 2020.
UGH THAT RED ON THE BLUES JERSEY ALWAYS KILLS ME!
The Commanders should go back to being the Redskins, but change the logo to a potato. Also, not even a mention of the Edmonds era California Angels rebrand, then into the name change to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
I would like to see what you’re top 10 best rebrands are
I'll write that down
@@PenguinNote67 Ok cool
How do you miss the Vancouver Canucks V rebrand?
This is a family video that logo should be rated R 😂
2:50 honestly i thought the white and navy look they shifted to in 2017-2019 looked great, it was one of the cleanest unis in the whole league
Make matters worse. The Pistons have fired their coach after one season!!?
2:02 Im Literally Just Now Noticing There Was A W On The Logo😭😭
There is one thing you missed about the Miami Marlins. They have another jersey with a new name and logo that I can't stand called the sugar kings. It feels like a triple A team to me.
I never liked the Patriots rebrand. I always loved the "Patriot Pat" logo and those bright red jerseys.
For me the Ducks rebrand was the worst of all time. The Eggplant and Jade with that OG logo were classic. With the logo coming back, we can only hope for the colors too as well
I’m a raptors fan and agree
My worst rebrands in sports
NHL: the ducks rebrand in 07
NFL: the rams rebrand in 21
NBA: the pistons rebrand in 07
MLB: the mariners rebrand in 87
The Sabres could have made navy work in their colors if they had done 3 things differently, and totally skipped the buffaslug portion of their jersey history:
1. Don't introduce gray into the colors.
2. Brighter yellow. I feel like they also went with a darker shade of yellow when they switched to the navy and yellow jerseys.
3. Tie in the Buffalo city flag. The city flag is navy and white, so maybe the 13 lightning bolts and stars with a stylized B in the middle as a shoulder patch.
And the Sabres are lucky alternate jerseys weren't included because those yellow turdburger jerseys were probably the worst in the 21st century, so far.
If the Raptors were to revert back to the original look, the only change I would make is changing the word "Toronto" from grey to white so it stands out a bit more.
Also, I gotta say, the Fisherman logo looks amazing on the Islanders' reverse retro jerseys. Just goes to show what a little recolouring can do.
That old Wizards logo is ELITE
A big one for me is the Winnipeg Bluebombers (a Canadian football team). I get that the W was their logo way back when, so there is a degree of classic-ness to it, but it's still just a W!
THE ANAHEIM MIGHTY DUCKS. We want our identity BACK god dammit!!!!!!
Aerith’s Theme is an interesting choice starting at #2
Hating on the current Dallas stars look given the rebrand before that 💀
as a Dallas fan i personally dont mind the current logo but i do miss the old logo at times
It's clear we have very different tastes. You like flaming cartoon animals, and I like class.
No mention of Carolina Hurricanes' logo which is a hockey stick with a B hanging from it.
Flames "Blasty" logo 😂
the jazz had the coolest jersey with the mountains. changing to these new plain ones was the dumbest change . nobody outside of the state of utah would buy this new jersey.
I live in Utah. Nobody here bought those jerseys either.
At least the Astros won the World Series on those cool logos.
How did you miss the L.A. Kings switching from the Gretzky era black and silver (88-98) to that awful black and purple crap with a stupid lion wearing sunglasses, the glitter, and Los Angeles on the bottom of the jersey. The Kings went from first in the league in merchandise sales to last.
Dallas stars was an upgrade NGL
The Canucks flying V needs to be on this video
No it doesn't their original logo from 1970-78 should still be used today
The Rams main logo if it's a hat it felt like a knockoff dodger hat, but the Alternate logo which is Rams head and looks like an old one should be the main one, the commanders name should be for me the Redhogs since their offense is called the Hogs
I hated the coyotes and Houston dynamo 2021 rebrands, 2017 Trail Blazers, Timberwolves, spurs and cavaliers rebrands, 2013 jaguars and suns rebrands and 2001 pistons rebrand.
Growing up a Panthers fan since their inaugural season, I loved their old leaping cat. However, I like the shield logo too. And the jerseys are sharp! They did make a modernized less-detailed version of the leaping Panther which looks great. I would love to see it on a 3rd jersey someday,
For 2024 -25 there will be no third jerseys in the NHL
The Washington Wizards current logo resembles a garlic bulb or an orange. One rebrand that deserves some mention is my hometown Calgary Flames and that annoying “fire snorting horse”logo! It was first debuted at the 1998 Entry Draft. It sucked then as it does now as it used a third jersey.
I keep thinking the Wizards logo looks like a Volleyball almost
The Buffa-Slug logo looks like Trumps hair.
Trump 2024 🎉🎉🎉
Thankfully the Raptors are rebranding again this year.
They are?
Totally agree
We badly need a rebrand.
Mine is the Nets. Probably angst as a New Jersian who wants her team back, but the new logos are so bland and sterile. Any identity the team had is gone. The NJ alternate logo they had is by far their best, and I dream of days where they go play in Prudential with that logo. Unfortunately, slapping the word Brooklyn onto them is good for cash despite tearing away any identity they have as they fade into the shadow of the Knicks.
How was the "angry ram" logo iconic? It had been around only since 2000, and it was not the logo when they won Super Bowl XXXIV. Now the ram head they used in the 60s and 70s, that's iconic.
Why do I hear the Aerith theme from FF7 in the background of so many TH-cam videos?
The 90s brewers redesign
idk I like the new rams logo, it would be even cooler with the STL if they ever moved back to st louis
Bud, to be brutally honest, this video is awesome but way too short. Need to do a part two and possibly a part 3.
A quick note about the wordmark on the new Clippers logo: I believe there's a league mandate now that for new logos the location name is required to be in the logo in some capacity.
If that's the case, that's stupid. But the Jazz don't have a wordmark so are they an exception?
Totally disagree on the Blues' away blue jerseys with the yellow-gold and white shoulder yoke, '79-'84. Very distinctive and it looked great on the beautiful electric powder blue sweaters and with the blue helmets.
Then BLUES with the blue note first appeared in 1984-85
Pistons definitely had that logo in 2004
I keep seeing mixed logo histories for the Pistons. It's still better than the bubble letters
@@PenguinNote67 I just remember them beating down my Lakers with that Pistons basketball mid court when they did it 😔 lol
The Phillies piping look is the absolute worst in baseball. If they went back to curvy letters from the 60's on back it would be a much better look than what they currently have.
Lesson viola saved this team from ending up like the thrashers or yotes if he want to change the panthers to a picture of one of his house cats he can do it
He also delayed the cup being shifting identities in 16-17
@@PenguinNote67 he’s not always right but he hired zitto put asses in seats and fulfilled his promise to Lu so his logo stays
I'm not a fan of the current Dallas Stars look myself. It's kind of strange because I work for a junior A team in Canada called the Thunder Bay North Stars. We briefly had a logo like this, except with the letters TB on it. That look only lasted a couple of years before going back to a similar look to what the Minnesota North Stars had for most of their existence, except the words THUNDER BAY are on top of the pointed N with the star.
I disagree with the Pistons change. I like the bad boys era logo. Yes, it is simple, but it has a classic look to it that I prefer to the enraged horse logo.
I agree with your take on the Stars 100% though. I hate their current logo. I like the colours of their uniform but they have to fix that horrible D and go back to the ogo star.
Rams did not have an "iconic" logo.
So the islanders have a fisherman logo and no mascot
I Peter the Sabres Navy blue to royal blue, it fits more
The Sabres should have left well enough alone from what they began with in the fall of 1970
The Rams Won A Championship In Los Angeles!
They also won a championship in St. Louis! BEFORE they moved back to LA
#1- Cleveland GUaRdiANS
I will say why the old look for the Astros is a nice look it and the one before it (mid 90s till the left the dome) don't really fit the Houston Astros color palette.
The raptors new logo isn’t that bad tbh
I really think the Raptors rebrand was good, and much needed. That original logo and color scheme seemed gimmicky and childish, imo.
Agree. But the switch to the chevron jerseys was a huge mistake. But they are rebranding again so we’ll see what they do
@cpnstbn1266 when is this rebrand happening? I never knew about this
@@PenguinNote67 There’s a rumour it’s happening for the start of this upcoming season( their 30th anniversary ). I could be wrong about this though. I hope it’s true because the chevron jerseys are some of the ugliest in the entire league.
One rebrand downgrade I don’t see get talked about as much would have to be the XFL in 2023. Not just a specific team just the league as a whole. The branding for a good amount of the returning teams feel like a massive step down from their 2020 incarnations (the Renegades especially going from that menacing cowboy logo to a logo that just looks like a D and R smashed together) and even the league logo went from a solid modernized version of the old 2001 logo to this bland alarm clock numbering looking logo. It honestly just felt like the league wasn’t the same once the rebranding happened and it makes me wish we had a reality where XFL 2.0 was able to complete it’s inaugural season instead of being cut short due to the pandemic
Most of those except the BattleHawks. I like their tweaked logo
I love the San Francisco demons logo of the old XFL branding in the 90’s
Also I am disagreeing with the Miami dolphins logo being in a dishonorable mention. I like these new simple look for the dolphins as again it's not better than the original one before it but it was a simple modified look to the team. But still good video
Blues fan, the mid 70s jerseys are so good, also the reebok edge ones, including the navy 3rd w the arch on it! I know taste is subjective but the clown red jerseys from the 90s are ugly, but they grew on me when I saw the adidas versions
What about the Capitals new jersey scheme and their old ones, the old ones were super iconic and the new ones are super bland
Why is almost every new NBA logo completely sterile? They’re so so bad. Great list though! Don’t agree with the Stars necessarily, but these are great picks all around
The Penguins switching uniforms after back-to-back Cups in ‘91 and ‘92 to the robo penguin. Horrible money grab and I’ll forever believe that is why they failed to win in ‘93.
The Penguins were sold to new owners in the 1991 off season that could have had something to do with it
A logo has nothing to do when it comes to a game 7 in a series especially in overtime
First of all, I think Penguin Note’s choices are perfectly spot on. I particularly hope the Raptors bring back their Dribbling Dinosaur, and that the Pistons bring back the Flaming Horsehead. But let me tell you about one of my least favorite re-brands: The Seattle SuperSonics ditching the logo they used from 1995-2001 in favor of the logo they used from 2001-2008. If (or is it WHEN? 🤞🤞) the Sonics return to the NBA, they should try to bring back some version of the ‘95-01 logo. I don’t think that’s asking a whole lot much.
Speaking of the Sonics, I kinda hope Penguin Note makes a video about them, too. I think he would do great with it. 👍👍 Love you, Penguin Note!
Sonics video. I've had that on the list for a while. Will do it one day
Dude, totally agree…what does sports branding have against purple??
Speaking of which, the Diamondbacks 2016 rebrand with the gradient diamond pattern on shoulders, sides and ankles was god-awful. Some of the worst jerseys I’ve ever seen.
I forgot about them. The teal is hideous with brick red
The Colorado Rockies have the best purple in their uniforms in all of sports.
@anthonylucero6458 it's the only good thing the Rockies have done in a while: keep purple
Dbacks home whites last year with black, teal and just a hint of red were 🔥. They finally got that look right and then immediately fucked it up again
@@anthonylucero6458 Sacramento Kings too. Basically same color scheme
Might be a hot take but looking at the ducks sets they wore for most of the 2010s I actually like the 06 rebrand but needed the web D only
Black and gold is a great colour scheme barely used in sports
Washington battlehogs would sound good
Just a slight change: Washington Commandos
I don't like the current Houston Rockets logo imo
The broncos new rebrand is meh and I’m a lifelong broncos fan
