- Relocations are tough for sports. But never has a team moved so unexpectedly that you could say it was overnight. Ok, the unexpected part is a bit of a stretch. The Colts moving to Indianapolis overnight was shocking to Baltimore. So how did it happen? Why did it happen? And what does Mayflower have to do with this? Only one way to find out.

For context, I'm a native Pittsburgher, and I was two when this happened. I have no frame of reference to this happening. However, even my Yinzer dad remembers being pissed off at Irsay for moving the Colts.

@maddrone7814 Same reason everyone hates Art Modell in Cleveland. Irsay, Sr. was an asshole who screwed over fans.
I feel like you understated how old the colts were at the beginning. The Dayton triangles existed way back pre-NFL and playing in the Ohio league. They played in the very first NFL game hosting it in Dayton Ohio.
The colts are truly the triangles, which like triples their age in the nfl
If the colts stayed in Baltimore, I could see Indianapolis getting the browns in 1996.
I'd say they'd get the Cardinals in the '80s since Indy built a dome.

As much as Baltimore loves the Ravens, I can tell you that losing the Colts still hurts Baltimore. Whenever the Ravens host the Colts for a game, the scoreboard always says “IND” instead of “Colts.” I can understand why Baltimore wouldn’t want to acknowledge the Colts being in Indianapolis.

As a life long Baltimorean, it's an interesting dichotomy with the Colts here. I'm just barely old enough to remember the Colts leaving Baltimore, but don't really have memories of the Colts playing here. I'd say people my age and younger don't have that feeling of loss that older fans do. We have the Ravens now, and the Ravens have done a great job in keeping the legacy of the Colts here.
Also to note, the Colts have now been in Indy 10 years longer than they were here in Baltimore. But with only 1 title, compared to the 3 the Colts had here.
Baltimore also loves it's football. We supported the Stars in the USFL after the Colts left (with a USFL title), and the CFL Colts/Stallions in the CFL (with a Grey Cup title). So Baltimore's the only city with a NFL, USFL and CFL title team to it's name.
Two different teams from different cities in different sports with the same name moved to Baltimore
Browns won in '64, not the Colts.
Of all the cases of North American teams relocating, this one is definitely the most interesting IMO.
