Mating Octopus Pair!! Exmouth, Western Australia
13 October 2023 - Lakeside, Exmouth Western Australia
Came across a couple of octopus during a snorkel in Exmouth, first saw the female and then realised the male was nearby. After only observing for a short while, the male approached the female and I was curious what was going on.
As the video shows, it becomes apparent that the male octopus intends to mate with the female. At the time I wasn't 100% sure this is what was going on, as I was not yet versed in the mating lives of octopus, but had a pretty good idea.
He appears to successfully mate with her twice during the time I was there. I left them to their peace after 10 min or so, so it is entirely possible they continued this for a while (apparently can occur many times, even over days).
I remembered I had this footage while recently watching the first episode of the "Secrets of the Octopus" and was like gosh I actually need to find and edit this video to check, but knew I had definitely been exceptionally privileged to see this happen in real life!
To give you an idea of my snorkel and dive holidays, I can spend 4 hours snorkeling, or do 2 x 1 hour dives each day. This is not only exhausting (in the best possible way), but I take a LOT of footage and often, although I am excited to see it again to experience it all over, I get pretty tired and work and life takes over. And in my spare time I go diving (terrible problem, I know). But every now and then, when I have time.. I get to experience the wonder all over again!
Side note: both occys seem to get attacked by a fish or two a fair few times, and as always, a pet wrasse (wanted or not) is never too far from the occy's side.
I hope you enjoy.

Cigar Reef & Mike's Labyrinth Dives
มุมมอง 7714 วันที่ผ่านมา
16 June 2024 Dive 1 was at Cigar Reef dive site. Max dept 21.9m, 32 min dive. Sadly the storm came down, swell was up, light and vis was quite bad (worst I have had ever at Rotto). A couple of the clips I almost mistook for a night dive when I first saw them again. Nice corals but wasn't too thrilled with the dive site. A couple of us had gear problems too so all in all wasn't a too pleasing ex...

Featuring: * Lots of hungly cow fish * A big baitball that hung around for hours, * Stingray at the end of the jetty * Couple of hermit crabs * A gorgeous juvenile dwarf wobbegong! It was so little! Orziba Wreck Dive - 18 May 2024 Max depth 11.4m, dive time 66min. First dive at the Orziba Wreck off Rockingham. We found much of the main structures (I think) and then did a big loop around the exterior to see scattered bits of the wreck and the surrounding reef. This was a great dive, the ocean life has embraced the wreck so well, at times it was hard to tell what was reef and what was wreck....

      My fav part! I absolutely love Blennys. So much attitude. One of the divers pointed him out to me, he went over and placed his hand right at the top to show me and I saw the Blenny make a show of going for his fingers 😂 so cute. The current was strong pushing me back and forth so was hard to get close and steady. But absolutely love the cutie blenny

      No idea, didn't get closer, thats all I saw too. Might have been at a point I couldn't go down further again as I had gotten to my limits for being deeper. Was also conserving energy so I didn't use all my air too quick. All the interesting stuff I captured I have included in the video.

    • @inspiredexploring
      @inspiredexploring 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe - but my interest lies in the life in any location, rather than the location itself. So you will likely see more animal based content with the wreck in the background. It costs a fair bit to get out to this location if you don't have your own boat and being so deep, you have limited time there. I couldn't get to all the bits of the boat in one dive even if I wanted to (unless I got into tech diving/equipment/$$$). But I follow the cool animals I see, that's what I am interested in and that what I want to watch back when I see my videos again :)
