HMAS Swan Wreck Night Dive

HMAS Swan Wreck Night Dive. Dive 133.
17 Feb 2024, Start of dive 7:33pm, Dive time 44min, Max depth 22.4m.
The sea was calm and got even better as the afternoon turned to evening. Couldn't have asked for better and the vis was pretty speccy too.
After our afternoon dive and surface interval/dinner, we hopped back into the water as the sun went down to visit the fish that stayed out partying and find those that had gone to bed. The batfish were patrolling their station tirelessly and keeping us divers company as we stayed above our NDL for our second dive. A fair few blue devils were out of their hidey holes hunting and a western blue groper was sleeping tucked in a nook in the wreck. Two or three baldchin gropers were spotted on the deck as we swept from one end to the other.
At one point a school of Samson fish got confused and spooked by our lights, one bolted and accidentally pegged me hard in the hand, against my camera tray. As I do when this sort of thing happens, I was startled and screamed underwater. Quite a hilarious concept really. But felt bad for the fish as the poor thing would have been so scared and now also had a sore head.
As always would have loved to stay longer but my lights grew weaker and my NDL got lower so my time was limited and another wonderful dive came to an end.

It was a fun dive but I still prefer it as a day dive, as you get to see more of the wreck and more in general in daylight. Night time you are just so limited by what the torch picks up.

How are you not afraid of the looming darkness surrounding you down there.. thats creepy as hell.

I've done lots of night dives now, this is the deepest, but its quite amazing just seeing what there is to find, its all consuming which leaves little space to much worry about the unknown 😊

@@inspiredexploring Praise to you for getting out there and doing it.. the ocean gives me the heebie jeebies in the daytime let alone nighttime :)
