Gday, Welcome to my channel, here in my workshop I have a lathe, Cincinnati mill, mill/drill along with all the other bits and pieces we all have in a home shop, I am self taught by watching other TH-camrs and by asking questions, I certainly don’t class myself as a machinist in anyway, I just like to make things to see if I can do it, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t, it’s all about learning, I hope you enjoy what I do and please if you can pass on any tips along the way please leave a comment, thank you for stopping by, Matty

Self Propelled Lawnmower Repair

Gday, This week I repair a self propelled lawnmower, the input shaft bearing failed which then destroyed the plastic pulley, I made a new pulley from steel and replaced the bearing and now its back working again, I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching..... pro tip for fitting the bearings Matty. Prestart the bearings with hammer and m/s drift. going 100% with the press risks ruining the bore if the bearing starts cock eyed. Another trick is to make a short counterbore of bearing size+.05mm. Depth = radius of bearing shoulder. This will help getting the bearing square with the bore. Regarding the touch DRO on the lathe be sure to look for 0.005mm or better resolution on the cross slide scale. Remember the counter doubles the tool movement to read diameter! As far as I know the mag scales are only good for 0.01 resolution
I have wanted to create something like this for my own use. So much thought goes into the process. An outrigger with a crank jack that has a drop leg is something I have used for various terrains. A humble craftsman will always have my respect! Nice looking job!

Nice explanation, presentation and nice design approach. Your solution has something others don't; compactness. Others take scads of space, making them intrusive, huge in dimension, and then, considering the size of the contraption, not very rigid. Your approach if it was beefed up a bit more would still be very reasonable yet there would be significant rigidity.
I appreciate the fact you make it look easy which inspires wannabes like me to have a crack. Just wish cast was easy to get hold of.

This is an awesome project that you are doing and I know a few in the trade that would struggle to perform to your standards. I'm a fitter and turner with 35 years experience fitting but only 6 months in a machine shop and your work is up there with what I've seen going on. Since I've been semi retired is where I really discovered I love machining and hope to be as good as you eventually. are you planning to sell the plans to this project? as I would be really keen to give this one a crack.
Gday, thanks for the kind words, this has been a great build and a really good learning curve, In the next few weeks I’ll be making a gearbox to reduce the feed rate when it’s in facing mode, once it’s all completed and everything works then the plans we become available, hopefully this won’t be to far away, appreciate you watching mate, cheers

Oh yeah, gotta go and edit, and then you go fishing 😂 Very nice build indeed! I'm guessing there's a practical limit on the spindle speed when it's set up for facing? That star wheel might get up enough inertia to keep spinning between rotations. Regards, Preso
