I am going back to watch some of your older videos .especially like the fact you show when things don't go as planed and how to overcome. Keep the content coming. God Bless. Rexy from West Virginia
Gday Rexy, truly appreciate you watching, im not frightened to show my mistakes, it’s apart of life and we’ll make’um, it amazes me how many machinist never make a simple mistake but sometimes when you watch closely the new piece of material will appear, I hope you enjoy the old videos mate, cheers
You are going to love having that DRO. I mounted mine the same as you did yours. Only thing I did different was mount the excess cabling to the backsplash.
Gday Tom, I did think about putting the cable on the back splash, I need to stop looking at the hand wheels now, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Best thing I ever did, putting a DRO on my old LD 1240 lathe. I also got mine from Hare and Forbes when they were running a deal some time ago. I managed to get it fitted up using the bracketry that came in the kit. Still learning how to operate it, but between yourself and Kurtis I'm getting more and more comfortable with it.
Gday, this was a pretty good deal I thought, the brackets just wouldn’t work right unfortunately, I’ve got to learn how to use this one myself now mate, thanks for watching, cheers
Congrats on the DRO install, you'll love it if you trust it. Now, you have to learn to trust the numbers on the DRO. This is a massive UPGRADE,,, enjoy it.

GREAT job Matty . Good to see you got away with the purchase with the boss . The dro will save so much time for you . Maybe make you own QCTP now . lol . no pressure . great to see you entertaining us still through the tough times mate . Always a pleasure . Cheers Ade.
Gday Ade, when Bec said to buy the dro I didn’t ask twice that’s for sure, I have thought about making a QCTP but that’s as far as I got, thanks for watching mate, cheers

Good job on the DRO and coolant. Sorry the chemo has hit you bad this time but you need to find some motivation or else the boss’s sympathy level might drop like the oil level in a busted sump! Keep the chin up mate, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Gday, I think the dro was money well spent, I noticed when I put the dro on the mill it made jobs much quicker and more accurate, thanks for watching, cheers
Very neat job on the DRO Matty. Should make using the lathe even more pleasurable. Glad you got approval from she who must be obeyed. Loved the sand sculpture at the end of the video. Take care Matty. Cheers Nobby
Gday Nobby, I was pretty happy to the the approval to buy the DRO, I didn't ask twice thats for sure, every year the town has the "Whale Festival", theres a street parade, hot rods, trucks, all sorts of things that around the town, Its a great weekend, The sand sculpture was amazing this year and was much bigger then it looks in the photo, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Congratulations on the new addition to the shop. I finally broke down and got a dro for my lathe a while back. One thing I really like about it is that I have a second reference point to make sure I don't overshoot a measurement.
Hi Matty You are looking great. Glad you bought the DRO. You probably already know this but just in case..... The cross slide scale readings can be set to read either radius or diameter. Recommend setting to diameter. Cheers John

Gday, I really like the look of the display compared to the older type, Chemo has knocked me around this last treatment but I’m coming good now finally, appreciate you watching, cheers
Thank you for the video, good to see you have a DRO I have no doubt that behind many a great "You tuber" there is a hidden gem in the the background keeping it all together, and it looks like you married a true diamond.
I'm gonna do it!!! Thanks for the inspiration. My apron scale reads to 14.5mm which is Zero. Doesn't make sense??? DRO to the rescue hopefully!! Maybe worth the 3 or 4 nights on the couch!! God Bless
@@MattysWorkshop I know their $$$, but I really like my 40 position miltifix toolpost, size A. I've only got a little optimum tu2004, but it's been great. As always, I want more tool holders, and they want $$$for them too, but its incredible. A cheap ebay lcd dro($279 for a kit) with glass scales and the 40 position QCTP and some insert tooling have made a little ripper of a lathe. Super easy to use and nailing it to 0.01mm in steel and SS. Stay healthy and happy mate, love the channel👍👌🇦🇺
Can't wait to see the boring and facing head build. It'll be epic! The transformer for my power feed is in a fully enclosed box. No chance for swarf and metal dust to get into the guts. Could be a kaboom situation 😮
Gday Preso, it’s certainly going to be a challenging build but also a good learning curve, the plan is to have the power supply in a enclosure, just have to work that part out, appreciate you watching mate
Nice work and you are really going to like having a DRO on the lathe. I had some "trust issues" with mine when I first set it up. I kept double checking and comparing readings with a dial indicator until I finally accepted the fact that it was trust worthy. Now all you need is a good precision job so the DRO can prove itself.
Gday, I still keep looking at the hand wheels and thats a habit thats going to take a while to get out of I think, From all the test ive done its spot on, Thanks for watching, Cheers
That looks like the install I did on my lathe! I have come to trust the longitudinal scale, but still fuss with the cross slide, fine cuts, cut differently than deep roughing cuts.
I had to take the dro off my lathe because I'm adding a tracer to my lathe and plus the dro that came with it was from the 90s. LOL. Not sure if Ill be able to put another dro on my lathe after the tracer is finished. *Nice one you got though. I like the color of the LED. Real easy to see.* 😀
Good on you Matty another great "how to movie" i think your missus is a winner too, still getting fed and half the bed! Thanks again for the updates and great content, Mick.
real good Matty happy for your purchase now i know how to fit one to mine. as for the the coolant you run i did some research into it got on to the supplier in Brisbane as non up this way getting some bit and bobs sent through as well as the coolant the Hangsterfer's 5080 same as you are going to try it was recommended by the rep for my type of turning jobs and it's clear not milky like the one i am running which as you know is a pain the the bum mate your looking well hope your on top of the rust me i am still weighting on tests but will see how i go with it cheers mate thanks for the videos there an inspiration for me
Gday, I was using Hangsterfers 5030 coolant and now im trying the 5080, So far im really happy with it, I used to use penrite soluble oil and was for ever changing it out, The hangsterfers last lot longer and being a clear colour make a big difference, I wish you all the best with your results mate, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop hay Matty what mix of the 5080 are you using for just general type machining I E steel and stainless steel i was thinking of a mix of 1 part 5080 to 10 parts water should be 5 on the refractometer cheers
Good work Matty, that will make a world of difference for you. I fitted one to my Austrian lathe and have never looked back. DROs are accurate and take all that backlash out that you need to account for on the dials. You may be already over it, but make sure your cross slide is in diameter mode on the DRO. If not it can be a big 'gotcha' moment when you dial in 1mm and unexpectantly take 2mm off the diameter.
Gday John, im really glad I finally fitted a DRO, it only took me 3 years, I have set the cross slide to diameter already mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Nice job Matty; next step is a must.. 3 axis DRO for the mill, I'm sure the financial director will sign off the capex (capital expenditure) form without any qualms. Looking forward to see your next job with it in use. Wishing you continued good health from the UK.
Good one Matty, you've almost inspired me to fit the Y axis scale to my big lathe - I either need to pull the lathe away from the wall or remove the wall for a bit! All the best
I can sympathise, I bought a DRO for my lathe about a year ago but it is still in its packaging as my lathe is against a wall and as it is raised 8 inches not sitting on the floor I can't be arsed/face the thought of moving it to fit the scale. Maybe one day?😢
@@chrisstephens6673yeah, I'll probably pull the wall down - the wall girts are timber and the white ants have got into a fair bit of them. I'll replace them with steel girts. As per usual there is too much stuff in front of the lathe to move it now!
👍. Another interesting exploit! Glad to see you apparently doing well. Always enjoy seeing a new tool that makes life easier. Now we need testing with the coolant ripping and the chips purple 😂
Great job Matty, love the all singing and dancing DRO, good to hear you didn't have to use the Alarm clock function, ref sleeping in the workshop ( only joking). Just a thought, though you may have already done so, does the scale covers need sealing? Good to see you bust, and great addition to the shop. Thanks for sharing. Regards John
Gday John, I was surprised I didn't have to find the alarm clock function, The scale cover on the cross slide has a type of built in seal, The other scale is set off the bed by 3mm which will let the coolant passed, Thanks for watching, Cheers
A DRO is on the wish list but has had to wait for a while. Need to get one for the mill and for the lathe. You have a very similar lathe to mine and so the same setup would work on mine. Hope you're having a decent Wednesday and that you're feeling well.
Gday, Its nice having a DRO on the lathe but I still can't get used to using it just yet, Im still looking at the hand wheels, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, not living in the dark ages anymore, one thing you have to do is fit a stop so you can't smack the tailstock into the cross slide scale. My longitudinal scale had a slight bend also, don't think it will effect the accuracy over that distance for the work I do. .
Hay Matty well dun ,it dues not mater the size of the video or the content its nice to see you have a go and keep busy. PS the bow in the scale is in the shape of the back casting you need a wedge shape packer if you know what i mean. Best wishes Robert
Gday Robert, I’m still having a go mate, the scale itself has a slight bow in the aluminium extrusion by the looks and I spaced the scale 3mm off the casting thanks for watching, cheers
Nice job Matty, I did mine the same way, although it was a Banggood DRO, also Sino scales. I do like the changes to the coolant system, might copy that onto my lathe. I bought a Toolex from Gasweld back in the middle of COVID lockdowns because the AL960B was out of stock. A good lathe not a great one, but enjoy using it. Fitter and turner so not new to machining. All the best with your treatment.
Gday, Ive only heard good things about the sino scales, Doesn't matter what lathe you have as long as you enjoy using it mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
G’day Matty. That’s cool mate, good for you. I have Sino scales on my mill with the ditron read out. How good is the tap wrench? I’ve got the exact same one. I swept my scale plate the same as you. Cheers 🍻
Gday Aaron, the Bordo tap wrench is brilliant, I heard only good stories about the Sino scales so I hope they never give trouble, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Im super keen to do the same to my lathe but im not sure the cross slide install would be as simple in a benchtop hobby lathe as those glass scales are quite large.
Gday, The cross slide scale is a low profile model, Fits pretty neatly really, You might be able to go with a TouchDRO and magnetic scales, I have that setup on the Cincinnati mill and its been a great unit, Thanks for watching, Cheers
I keep watching for an installation of the DRO with a taper attachment on your style of lathe. It is the little things that will be the most bother. Routing the cables so they aren't dragging swarf, mounting the display so that it is in the most handy position. With a taper attachment, what modifications need to be done to the back splash? Be the pits to put her all back together and then the second job in find that you could have done it better! I don't want to drill more holes than absolutely necessary in the lathe or mill so I am probably overstudying the issues but hope to do it once and be happy with it.
Gday, I’m not sure how the fit up would be with a taper turning attachment, i guess there’s a way it could be done though, appreciate you watching, cheers
I have the same Sino glass scales on my mill, one of which failed when we moved the mill from its previous owner to my workshop, new was easy enough to get, but is a bit longer as the old one didn't allow full travel of the table. I'd really like to see them really minaturise them, I'm sure they could be 1/4 the size they are. Plus I really wish that the machine manufacturers would cast bosses or similar into their machines in the right places so that DRO's can more easily be fitted. It's not beyond the wit of man is it? Hopefully your DRO will speed your work up and we see more of it. Looking good though Matty, hoping the treatment carries on well and it doesn't bugger you up too much.
Gday, it would be nice to have the scales smaller, I can’t see why this can’t be done really, my lathe has a pad casting on each end of the bed that’s for a scale, that’s good if the scale you buy is way over length, I put a TouchDRO with magnetic scales on the milling machine and the scales are a lot smaller and easy to cut to length, appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Glad to see you have got your DRO and didn’t waste time fitting it. My question is where did you get that ratchet tap wrench it looks pretty good to me. Hope the treatment goes well .all the best
Gday, the ratchet is made by Bordo, great tool mate but there not real cheap, once I got the go ahead to get the dro I didn’t waste anytime just in case there was a change of heart from the boss lady😉, thanks for watching, cheers

real good Matty happy for your purchase now i know how to fit one to mine. as for the the coolant you run i did some research into it got on to the supplier in Brisbane as non up this way getting some bit and bobs sent through as well as the coolant the Hangsterfer's 5080 same as you are going to try it was recommended by the rep for my type of turning jobs and it's clear not milky like the one i am running which as you know is a pain the the bum mate your looking well hope your on top of the rust me i am still weighting on tests but will see how i go with it cheers mate thanks for the videos there an inspiration for me
Gday, I was using Hangsterfers 5030 coolant and now im trying the 5080, So far im really happy with it, I used to use penrite soluble oil and was for ever changing it out, The hangsterfers last lot longer and being a clear colour make a big difference, I wish you all the best with your results mate, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop hay Matty what mix of the 5080 are you using for just general type machining I E steel and stainless steel i was thinking of a mix of 1 part 5080 to 10 parts water should be 5 on the refractometer cheers
@@wallbawden5511 I mix 10:1, from memory I think it around 2.5 or 3 on the Brix scale
The DRO set up looks great Matty, enjoy.
Thanks very much mate, Appreciate you watching, cheers
Good work Matty, that will make a world of difference for you. I fitted one to my Austrian lathe and have never looked back. DROs are accurate and take all that backlash out that you need to account for on the dials. You may be already over it, but make sure your cross slide is in diameter mode on the DRO. If not it can be a big 'gotcha' moment when you dial in 1mm and unexpectantly take 2mm off the diameter.
Gday John, im really glad I finally fitted a DRO, it only took me 3 years, I have set the cross slide to diameter already mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Nice job Matty, glad to hear you have not been exiled to the spare room/sofa. Still getting your dinner too, bonus. All the best.😊
Gday, I’ve had a few lounge days but coming good now finally, thanks for watching, cheers
Matty, don't forget to install a solid stop on the carriage to prevent your tailstock from damaging your cross-slide scale/head.
Gday, I’ve already got a stop on the back of the carriage that I forgot to add in the video, thanks for watching, cheers 🍻
Looking good. Its a nice test to use the lathe dials as you were before and see how close you get to the dro reading. Wishing you all the best.
Gday, Im still looking at the hand wheels all the time, Thats a habit that will take a while to get out of I think, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Nice job Matty; next step is a must.. 3 axis DRO for the mill, I'm sure the financial director will sign off the capex (capital expenditure) form without any qualms. Looking forward to see your next job with it in use. Wishing you continued good health from the UK.
Gday, the Cincinnati mill has a TouchDRO setup, I used magnetic scales on the one and it’s been a great setup, thanks for watching mate, cheers
Good one Matty, you've almost inspired me to fit the Y axis scale to my big lathe - I either need to pull the lathe away from the wall or remove the wall for a bit! All the best
Gday, It was a bloody tight squeeze between the wall and lathe, I need to go on a diet I think mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
@@theoldstationhand have you been looking in my garage?
👍. Another interesting exploit! Glad to see you apparently doing well. Always enjoy seeing a new tool that makes life easier. Now we need testing with the coolant ripping and the chips purple 😂
Gday, I’m going pretty good really, the chemo takes it toll but I’m trying to stay as motivated as possible, appreciate you watching, cheers
A great addition to your shop!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Thanks mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Nice upgrades, time saved for the future, and no bruising!
Thanks very much mate, appreciate you watching, Cheers
DRO…..
The best ‘aide memoir’ for us forgetful old bastards 🤣
I couldn’t do without mine now mate 😎
Bloody well done 👍
Regards
Robert
Gday Robert, it’s going to be a good thing once I stop looking at the bloody hand wheels, old habits die hard mate, thanks for watching, cheers
Very nice installation. I think you did a great job on the cable management. I’m sure you’ll love having that rig.
Gday, cable management is something I wanted to get right, I can’t stand cables running everywhere getting tangled up, appreciate you watching, cheers
Glad you went for the dro Matty, it will make machining so much easier. Good on yah mate
Thanks mate, Money well spent, Thanks for watching, cheers
A very neat install 👍
All the best,
Paul
PS. I definitely could not fit behind your lathe 🤣🤣
Thanks mate, I only just fitted to don't worry, it was close, Cheers
Just a hint…install a stop so you do not crash the tailstock into the scale on the cross slide. Great videos, keep up the good work!!!
Gday, I have a stop on the back of the carriage, I forgot to put that part on the video, thanks for watching, cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Awesome, I just didn’t want to see all your work get mashed. I love the finishes you get on that lathe…they look like chrome!!!
@@erichockuly9819 thanks mate, it’s all done to the speeds and feeds
Another excellent video Matty, I find your videos relaxing and very enjoyable to watch!
Thanks very much mate, cheers
Lovely job on the installation Matty, and the coolant delivery system is top notch, I am sure you will put it to full use, cheers!
Thanks very much mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Great addition to your lathe. Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Nice work Mate. That's gotta put a smile on your face.
Thanks mate, im pretty happy with the setup now, thanks for watching, cheers
looks grate Matty the screen is very nice looks better than the old types you will find it well safe a lot of time😃
Gday, I really like the look of the screen compared to the older type, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Looks brilliant mate, can't wait to see it in action.
Thanks mate, I have to get used to it yet, Thanks for watching, Cheers
@MattysWorkshop it always a highlight of the week when you're videos come out
DRO looks good, know you will really enjoy it. Stay healthy my friend!
Thanks very much, appreciate you watching, cheers
Nice Neat Job!
Thanks very much, Cheers
Thanks for the wonderful video. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks
Appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Just like a store bought one. ❤
Almost mate, Cheers
You have that all very tidy! It looks fantastic! I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.
Hope all is going well with you!
Cheers from Canada
Gday, the fit up went well overall, I like to keep things as tidy as possible mate, thanks for watching, cheers
most excellant Matty. good to see the new DRO.
Thanks mate, cheers
A DRO is on the wish list but has had to wait for a while. Need to get one for the mill and for the lathe. You have a very similar lathe to mine and so the same setup would work on mine. Hope you're having a decent Wednesday and that you're feeling well.
Gday, Its nice having a DRO on the lathe but I still can't get used to using it just yet, Im still looking at the hand wheels, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Sounds like you're on a winner. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate, appreciate you watching, Cheers
Nice one Matty. That'll give your brain a rest......Tony
Thanks Tony, there’s not much brain to rest mate🤣, thanks for watching, cheers
Nice Work Matty, This will make a huge difference to you. You will not know yourself :)
Gday, once I get used to not looking at the hand wheels it'll be a good thing mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Well done Matty. You're gonna love it!
Thanks mate, just have to get used to having it now, cheers
Nice score well price unit from Hairy forbs. looks great all setup on the lathe.
Gday, The price wasn't that bad really considering, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Enjoying the video again. Wishing you all the best!!
Thanks very much mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, not living in the dark ages anymore, one thing you have to do is fit a stop so you can't smack the tailstock into the cross slide scale.
My longitudinal scale had a slight bend also, don't think it will effect the accuracy over that distance for the work I do.
.
Gday, I have put a stop on the back of the carriage already, I forgot to film that bit mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Hay Matty well dun ,it dues not mater the size of the video or the content its nice to see you have a go and keep busy.
PS the bow in the scale is in the shape of the back casting you need a wedge shape packer if you know what i mean.
Best wishes Robert
Gday Robert, I’m still having a go mate, the scale itself has a slight bow in the aluminium extrusion by the looks and I spaced the scale 3mm off the casting thanks for watching, cheers
looking good young man, and the DRO came out well also, keep up the good work.
Thanks very much mate, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers
Cheers, Matty.
Thanks for watching mate, cheers
Im super keen to do the same to my lathe but im not sure the cross slide install would be as simple in a benchtop hobby lathe as those glass scales are quite large.
Gday, The cross slide scale is a low profile model, Fits pretty neatly really, You might be able to go with a TouchDRO and magnetic scales, I have that setup on the Cincinnati mill and its been a great unit, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Next video is a DRO on the mill. 40% of time saving right there. The Sino scales work for me. Neat installation. 👍
Gday, the Cincinnati mill has a TouchDRO I put on some time ago, I used Igauging magnetic scales and hasn’t missed a beat, thanks for watching, cheers
Hi young matty, another great video video.
From kiwi land.
Thanks very much mate, Cheers
👍I know this won't count for much, coming from a Pom, but I really enjoy your videos. 😃
As long as you enjoy the videos mate and I appreciate you watching, Cheers
Glad to see you have got your DRO and didn’t waste time fitting it. My question is where did you get that ratchet tap wrench it looks pretty good to me. Hope the treatment goes well .all the best
Gday, the ratchet is made by Bordo, great tool mate but there not real cheap, once I got the go ahead to get the dro I didn’t waste anytime just in case there was a change of heart from the boss lady😉, thanks for watching, cheers
