The Hardest Story to Tell | April 25, 1979
This is the hardest video I’ve ever had to make. When I started this project over a year ago, I had hopes of getting answers to 45 year old questions. "What was he thinking and feeling in all these images I’m seeing and hearing on my screen"?
And thanks to a letter, and some very generous people who chose to join me in this, I got those answers. But there was one question I accepted I would never have answered. What was he thinking & feeling at 10:38 am April 25th, 1979?
And then the Universe stepped in...A total stranger and subscriber messaged me. He explained he remembered the accident as a child, and that his father was involved in the investigation from the Air Force side. I asked if we might speak, and he put us in touch.
Retired Major George Knirsch, USAF agreed to sit down with me and share his memories of the incident and investigation, and in the process he answered the one question. This is that conversation, thanks for joining me on this journey.
My heartfelt gratitude to Major Knirsch for telling his story, and Stephanie Usery, Video Archivist KMOV. April 25, 1979 video footage supplied and used with full permissions KMOV TV, St. Louis, Mo.

      @@6ZeroAlpha Very kind of you to respond to my comment. I've since realised you've been kind enough to post some films taken of your Father Naval career. Thank you for doing so. There's just something about watching footage taken on film from the 60's,70's to early 80's that has it's own magical quality and seeing the awesome Phantom in it's prime and element is something else. 2024 seems to be the year of The Phantom, I don't know if you are aware of a computer sim called DCS but there has recently been a Phantom module released which is very detailed inside and out, and a work of art in itself. There is also a You Tube Channel documenting the restoration to flight of a Phantom, the channels name is Diesel Thunder. That may be of interest to you to have a look at. Anyways, Best Wishes.

    Thank you for allowing me to vicariously experience flying a Cherokee Six! I learned how to fly in a Cherokee 140 while in college and also flew a 160 and 180. I was fascinated by the Cherokee Six, but never had the opportunity to fly one. Alas, I was not able to continue flying because I never made enough money. I still carry my pilot’s license in my wallet. Someday, I might find a way to fly a Cherokee Six with an instructor. I also enjoyed the views of St.Louis. Many of my college friends were from there. (I went to Mizzou.) I flew a couple of friends to St.Louis for fun. We landed at a small airport, the name of which I forgot. As part of my flight training, I flew into Lambert Field at night with my instructor. Thanks for bringing back these great memories! I do have a question, though: flying a private plane is a great way to go places faster than in a car. However, there’s the risk of being “socked in.” Certain weather conditions can ground even a proficient IFR-rated pilot. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your experience.

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha หลายเดือนก่อน

      thanks for stopping by and the nice comments! Yes, even with an IFR rating, I have had to cancel a few flights due weather because it was below my personal minimums at the destination. One of our videos ("ICING") details a trip that was extended by a day because it became unsafe to continue and we had to spend an unplanned night in Smyrna TN. You just roll with it and plan contingencies when the forecast isn't ideal.

    What were you able to see in the precip forecast prep? What you described was an inversion with freezing drizzle which is pretty serious so I was curious if that failed to appear in available forecasts or AIRMETs.

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Freezing drizzle was not in the forecast or METARs in the area, and no precip showing in Foreflight radar at the time we encountered it. Forecasted ice potential at our planned altitude in TN & KY so I stayed below the ceiling on this whole flight even though we were IFR. In hindsight I believe it was Supercooled Liquid Droplets (SLD) and definitely was not to be toyed with which is why I had to get below the freezing level fast. Fly safe!

    • @dryreed

      @@6ZeroAlpha Thanks. So, to my understanding, SLD means there had to have been a temp inversion and you were flying in sub freezing VMC. I was confused by your intro when you said the airlines were all grounded but you could still fly your light piston. You then go on to fly in severe clear VMC which airliners would have no difficulty with. I feel this could mislead some to think you are free to fly in weather worse than airliners tolerate. Of course you are, but I didn’t think that was what you meant to imply.

      If you watch the video I explain the airlines were still all jacked up because of the blizzard that came through the midwest the day prior to this flight. It was still hammering the hell out of the east coast. The day of this flight there were 1000's of cancellations, delays and Southwest was completely grounded due to a computer issue at their main scheduling hub. Had we been relying on commercial that day, we wouldn't have made it. Thx for stopping by.

    I flew a Cherokee Six for 10 years. Nearly 5000hrs in it. Besides a few bad mags, elec fuel pump failure, spark plugs, and one cracked cylinder. It never let me down. I literally flew a few thousands people and thousands of loads of cargo in it. Amazing plane.

      Glad you enjoyed it, thx for watching. It was the ride of a lifetime! This was one of the first couple of videos I made for my channel and I didn't have any cockpit voice so I had to make due with the free you tube music through the whole video. Kindda cringey now, but at the time I did my best to pick something inspiring to fit the scenery.

      @@6ZeroAlpha thanks for responding. I can relate. I had to replace engine on my Cherokee Six. Placed order Jan 2022 and felt lucky to get engine the last week of Dec 2022. Main delay then was cylinders.

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yea, that seems to be the case from what we are hearing from various shops, but Lycoming won't say, just calling it "production delays". Original ship date was end of June, then October, then November (which got us excited), and then 2 weeks ago the email now projecting end of March 2024.

    Good video and ADM. One thing my wife kindly pointed out to me while flying was how I react to the situations we come upon really influences her confidence in GA flying. For instance, “Whooo we made it!” May not be confindence inspiring. 😂

      thanks for stopping by and the comment. I agree with your sentiment and wouldn't have said anything like that during the critical moment in the flight. By the last 15 mins of the flight it was clear the danger was over, ice melted away and airport in sight so it was more of a final "exhale" by me to make the point.

    Can't you buy a used engine cheaper ?

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes but .... you get what you pay for. Used engine was someone else's problem, and has no warranty. 0 TTSN and a 3 yr Lycoming warranty coming with ours, + an instant booster to the value of the plane as well with a 0 time engine. most of all, peace of mind knowing we have a solid power plant up front that should give us years of (mostly) care free flying.

      all the 8mm and 35 mm pix you see in this whole series were shot by my dad, they are my copyrighted property on this channel. Most of what you see is uncut by me. I only splice it to interject a point in the conversation, or to transition scenes to the next 8mm reel. I try very hard to leave the footage he spliced rather than my interrelation. that was the story he wanted to tell so I'm making it happen.
