- EP-3 “RAG - 1st Flight in a F-4J Phantom” - This is the 3rd 8mm reel and contains footage from about Aug 1970-Dec 1971 during his time in VF-121 “Pacemakers” as judged from the logbooks. This documents Replacement Air Group (RAG) training and unfortunately there is no voice to go with it. A large part of it was shot from the back seat during his first hop in an F-4J on Dec 15, 1970 according to the logbooks,. We also learn the origins of the “Mad Duck” call sign from a very special guest.
After a chance encounter & brief discussion at Oshkosh 2023, Cdr. Bill ‘Willy’ Driscoll USN (Ret.) agreed to help me with this one since he went through the RAG with my dad. Bill sat down for a conversation and explains the purpose and tactics of the RAG and the Instructors. We discuss the various types of training you get, the intense competition between the students, and he shares some great stories about team work, resilience, & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us separated by ~52 yrs. Thank you Bill.

What a cool opportunity!
Great conversation!
yea, god works in mysterious ways I suppose. the odds of us both being at OSH, and then connecting, and then him remembering a guy from 52 yrs ago?? MIND BLOWIN! So grateful for the opportunity and Bill being so gracious with his time. thx for watching.
Wow! I don’t know how long your conversation lasted but I could listen to CDR Driscoll spin stories for hours. What an amazing opportunity, well done!!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was an honor to have the opp, and indeed hard to edit down because he is so good!
Great video. I bet your dad would be so proud of this video. Thanks for his service to the USA.
thanks, that means a lot coming from you! fly safe.
Great video. Love the 8mm snippets.
thanks! more to come, thanks for stopping by
@@6ZeroAlpha If you have contact info for the 8mm film i'd love to ask about a copy of the uncut film. I served on the flightdeck for two years. Aussie navy 1976-1982.
all the 8mm and 35 mm pix you see in this whole series were shot by my dad, they are my copyrighted property on this channel. Most of what you see is uncut by me. I only splice it to interject a point in the conversation, or to transition scenes to the next 8mm reel. I try very hard to leave the footage he spliced rather than my interrelation. that was the story he wanted to tell so I'm making it happen.
