Southwest Was Grounded, We’re Not | Cherokee Six Rescues Family Christmas Ski Vacation from Blizzard

  • What do you do when Christmas with family and your ski vacation is threatened by a once in a lifetime blizzard, paralyzing the Midwest, shuttering air travel, cancelling flights for days? You go private. But there’s just one catch… you have to fly the plane! Climb inside the cockpit with us for the ride and see how we did it.
We got out ahead of the Blizzard of 2022 and made it to KSUS as our “base of operations” for the week. It gave us the best odds of success to complete the entire planned trip of 10 days, and guaranteed we’d at least celebrate Christmas with family in St Louis. With the plane safely tucked away in a hangar out of the snow, 75 mph wind and bitterly cold temperatures, we rode out the storm. Once the weather cleared, we found our window of opportunity headed for Denver and Copper Mountain!
Along the way, we cover about 30 years of history in our Cherokee time machine as we pass over most of the places we have called home the past 30 years; where I went to school, met my wife, had our first jobs, 2nd jobs, got married, and got my private pilot’s license.
I have a new wing(wo)man and she gets a crash course in the radios and navigation while soaking up the gorgeous views Mother Nature’s handy work had created the previous few days. A quick pit stop in Rooks County, KS for the cheapest fuel around before we are airborne again for a sunset arrival to KAPA and the Rockies. We hop in the waiting rental car and are off to Copper Mountain! We made it! Hopefully we can get back home.

Every now and then, seems i come across a gem like this on TH-cam. Beautiful family, living the dream together.
The production value here is far better than some folks with many hundred times the views/subscribers.
    I'm on board 😁👍

Wow, thank you! I appreciate the kind words. this is my niche', and i do spend a lot of time in the editing room to create an elevated experience because I see storytelling and production value lacking in a lot of aviation YT content. each video has about 80 hrs in it including pre-prod & the flying. I have been told by some with 5x my subscribers that i'm crazy and "care" too much because viewers are "fickle with short attention spans". this may be true, but i've always subscribed to the philosophies 1) if you love what you do, it's not work, 2) don't put your name on something your not proud of, 3) build a good product and the customers will come. i'll keep it up if you keep watching, tell all your friends, thx and fly safe!

Really good video. Thanks for sharing. Very Nice plane. (Pro tip: ATC only needs a 4 digit model type. I used to do the same thing you're doing in this video. Giving my them my airplane's full model number/nomenclature. At the time I had a PA-32-301T *fixed gear turbo Saratoga. PA32 is all their computer's prompts have room for and I'm giving them the whole thing every time. Their computer can't tell the difference between a Cherokee 6, a Lance, or a Saratoga. Fixed gear or retract for that matter. I now have a PA-28-236 *Dakota. I can either tell them simply I'm a PA28, which is correct and works, or as I always do, tell them I'm a P28B, which is the FAA/ATC distinct model # for the 6cyl, four seat, Cherokees. It is obviously proper to also say "Cherokee Six, Lance, Saratoga, or Dakota" after the 4 digit model. I am 53, started flying in 1996, and I only learned this about 2 yrs ago from a retired ATC controller who has a plane and hangar next to mine. So from here on out you're a Cherokee6 PA32 and you will sound and look much cooler. lol.) PS- You have a beautiful family too!

thank you for the compliments, and appreciate your perspective. I used to say "PA32" all the time and noticed a trend of calling me "saratoga", and "keep your speed up" in terminal areas. I started clarifying a few yrs back just to avoid assumptions, maybe too much clarifying :)

9:32 You must be one of those rare engineers with a personality! Way too much excitement in your voice!! 🤣 Glad this showed up in my feed! That's a busy airport to land at from what I'm told. question for you why did you choose the Cherokee 6 as opposed to a Cessna 210 or other plane?
edit: and I just subscribed! cheers! Jason

i've always been one of those weird personalities types I suppose - extroverted/introvert. Thanks for stopping by. We looked at a Saratoga HP but couldn't afford, tried out a 210 but Cherokee won out for 1) easy in & out | cargo 2) useful load 3) price/value ratio of this particular six vs the 210. hope you check out the rest of our videos, fly safe!

I was confused by your intro when you said the airlines were all grounded but you could still fly your light piston. You then go on to fly in severe clear VMC which airliners would have no difficulty with. I feel this could mislead some to think you are free to fly in weather worse than airliners tolerate. Of course you are, but I didn’t think that was what you meant to imply.

      @6ZeroAlpha  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you watch the video I explain the airlines were still all jacked up because of the blizzard that came through the midwest the day prior to this flight. It was still hammering the hell out of the east coast. The day of this flight there were 1000's of cancellations, delays and Southwest was completely grounded due to a computer issue at their main scheduling hub. Had we been relying on commercial that day, we wouldn't have made it. Thx for stopping by.

Is the aircraft kept aloft by knitting?

    • @6ZeroAlpha

I like the content, but don't like the rap music. And no matter what the music is, if you have to have it, keep it in the background. Flying should be the main focus - in my opinion. It's why I subscribed.

thanks for stopping by and the feedback. I have a huge range in musical tastes from classical - current pop +everything in between, and work hard to curate the best songs from the limited selection of copyright free YT music, to set the sequence mood. I feel this sets me apart from other channels doing this same thing that rely too much on 1 genre. I know I can't please everyone.
