    Still a bit confused what language acquisition is exactly. English is my second language and I learned the foundation through classics as l grammar and vocabulary textbooks. Plus practice with native speakers, reading and listening. Had 625 TOEFL score before I even moved to the UK. Now English is like my second nature and skin. French is my new language to learn and trying to see what’s new in the field. But I still can’t help but want to start with grammar ! 😊 I just can’t stand books and courses where they just teach you phrases without structure and rules. I still tend to think that good material grammar is a fundamental step 1

    • @HoraryHellfire
      @HoraryHellfire 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The core component to being proficient in language is having a massive amount of comprehensible input. No matter how much grammar study and practice you do, you'll still need a massive amount of comprehensible input. It's not optional if you want to be proficient. What is optional is studying grammar and vocabulary textbooks. If you want to, go ahead. But it's not a necessary step. Or if it is necessary, it's necessary at the later stages of language development.

    What gibberish he delivers! How can you understand a foreign language without knowing a single word of it? But to learn a word you need to resort to learning. Hence his theory goes out of the window.

      Did you understand every word of the English language as a baby? Yeah, I didn't think so. What kind of nonsense argument is "how can you understand without knowing?" The key word is "comprehensible". If you know 0 words, you can still understand WHAT is being said through context clues, utilizing sensory aids such as sight.

    • @HoraryHellfire
      @HoraryHellfire 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Good thing the point isn't to make people feel good about learning a language. Jeff McQuillan's statements stem from his research and the research of his teacher Stephen Krashen. Both are grammarians and LOVE grammar. Stephen Krashen even has a PhD in grammar he loves it so much. Yet their research indicates that it is ineffective to use learn grammar. "Useless" isn't the word that Krashen would use, though.

    With due respect, I beg to differ. There's a difference between a child's way of learning and an adult's way of learning. When we are children we have the time on our side to grow with the language.whereas the adults don't have this advantage so they should rather use their reasoning to control the learning process. Grammar per se is the infrastructure akin to the human skeleton. Now imagine all the human organs,muscles etc without the skeleton.so getting hold of the grammar and gradually growing vocabularies and expressions will be a better way for adults . Also soliloque is also an indispensable element, repeating mentally all the vocabularies and mentally trying to make sentences and speak them mentally. Acquiring thematic vocabularies is a good way of increasing vocabulary.

    • @HoraryHellfire
      @HoraryHellfire วันที่ผ่านมา

      There is no difference between a child's way of learning and an adult's way of learning. Most adults are too afraid to just get involved in the activities they want to be good at and would rather spend all their time theorizing the most efficient way to learn, wanting to take as many shortcuts as possible. At the end of the day, if you want to be proficient in language you need a massive amount of comprehensible input as a bare minimum requirement and there is little to no difference whether you study grammar alongside or not. If you want to study because it gives your brain some dopamine hits, go for it. It's an illusion that you have control over the learning process. Just get experience with the thing you want to learn. The brain is a pattern recognition machine, and a VERY good one at that.

    Isn't the best way of learning a language (at least quickly) through emersion?! If you live in a country that does not use your primary language you become emersed in the culture & therefore language of the people who live there. You become dependent on their language because your primary language doesn't work there.

    • @HoraryHellfire

      Immersion provides snippets of "Comprehensible Input", but it is not the "best" way. The field of Linguistics doesn't even know the best way. Each method has its own following that people swear by. But what is known in Linguistics is that a massive amount of input is required at a bare minimum, in order to be proficient. Studying or not, you still need to get a lot of experience with the language. Immersion is necessary, but to what degree exactly other than "A LOT", we don't know.

    I have been trying to learn Swedish for 5 years. I used Babbel, but found it silly for its geared toward tourists. I tried Duo-Lingo. The learning segments had me lost. I’ve searched for a class in Swedish in Massachusetts in vain. I learned Spanish in my junior high school and knew “I got it”as i was dreaming in Spanish ( high Spanish, not Mexican Spanish.) But I had also spoken French( Kanuk- not “ proper” French) when I was 3 yrs old. During late 70s I was attempting to learn Cantonese & Mandarin through the Berlitz schooling method. Also a failure, although I can count to 10 in 8 languages, ( big deal) when it comes to learning a language at my age,66, I’m convinced I will only learn if I go to Sweden and stay for a month or so. It’s incredibly frustrating because no one around can converse with me. I studied on my own, and started with to be, att vara, but connecting words (på, om, till, och, med,etc) & syntax elude me. Does anyone else believe one must be immersed within the culture to really learn?

    I have heard this multiple times, but I still don't know what to do with it. While I think I understood him to say something like 5 + 5 = 10 or something like that. One, I could be mistaken about what the context actually is. He could have said a hand has five fingers and he has two hands with five fingers. Two, I couldn't repeat a single thing he said if you put a gun to my head, so I haven't actually acquired anything except maybe becoming slightly better at understanding the gentlemen's miming style. I have, for example, watched many many cartoons and other simple videos in my target language, Serbian, and while I sorta know what's going on from the visual context, that's the extent of it. The only times that I have been able to successfully place words to things or actions is from words that I have memorized. Meaning, I can pick out a word or two, I can understand the context, but I can't pick out words from the context. I'd be willing to give it a go, but he didn't offer a program that actually does this.

    • @HoraryHellfire
      @HoraryHellfire วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're treating it like seeing a single or few contexts is enough to acquire. It's not, though. This is because when you see a single context that you can get the gist of the message, you only acquire a small piece from that context. In order to have any ability to think with words you've been seeing in context, you've gotta see them many times to get the pieces for your brain to put together. The more pieces you have the easier it gets. Remember, your brain has to build a web of neuronal connections and pathways for the contexts it sees. That web isn't strong with only a few weak threads. It's strong when there's many, many connections holding it together with the most important threads having the strongest connections. To build those connections takes time.

    This is great but it makes me wonder-- then when having a sort of vocabulary deficiency, should I just start looking in different place sto acquire it? I've been learning my TL for a long time now, but I noticed that my vocabulary is behind. Studying flashcards clearly isn't doing a lot for me. My issue lies in also not being on a level where I can understand more than what's basic? I'm stuck in that mid-upper beginner plateau. How do I approach that?
