Gotta say, the gaslighting at the end is unfair to the people who've worked hard for up to but no more than 36 hours. I achieved C4 in French using this method in just under 24 hours. Needless to say as a clueless foreigner, French native speakers are blown away by my results when I shock them on Omegle or the streets of Paris.

You're right. I have promised my wife to not speak to anyone when I leave the house. The risk of shocking native speakers is too great

Your French tutor looks so authentic, I'd immediately book a lesson if I wasn't French myself!

My comment will be a rolling commentary of how I feel during this video:
0:26 - nailing it, I'm already laughing. You committed to this "please like me I'm so easy going" character haha.
1:46 - HAHAHA, yes! They always talk about how much their tutor complimented them, like as if your tutor is ever going to be like "You suck".
Nailed it all round. I know it sounds stupid but I've wanted to do this exact video for years but have always been kind of scared of not doing it well. You did it, and did it well. Great job!

I have genuinely met a person (A NZ lady living in France) who thought they spoke French - she literally just spoke English very loudly with a vague French accent. Amazingly, she actually made herself understood (long story, but I accompanied her to a French hospital and doing this she managed to bypass the entire bureaucracy and get to meet an orthopaedic surgeon who, fortunately, had entirely fluent English).

They were just following the rule: Never disagree with a crazy person.
Gratefully, there are ample persons with which to practice.

Great video, Matt 👏loved it so much! "It's a marathon, not a sprint!" is a great motto for language learners as they often forget that it takes time to learn a language properly. And all those videos on social media and YT put so much stress on students who end up thinking they're stupid if they don't get fluent in xx days/ weeks.
We have studied and are still in the process of learning languages and we can say it's a commitment, not just an 'affair'.

I was initially upset because I thought Matt was jumping ship from Spanish and beginning French. Now, I’m just laughing. Well done. This was a gift you’ve just given me and I feel terrible because I didn’t get you anything. Best I can do is a like since I’m already subscribed.

This is fun - and all too true. It was in the first covid lockdown that the YT algo started pushing all those 'learn language easy...' videos at me. I'm glad I found some sensible advice later, saved a lot of time (Matt vs Japan was very eyeopening). I think that someone would be doing everyone a service by doing a video showing clearly how to avoid bad advice on language learning, its easy using a few heuristics to work out who is not worth reading/watching/following. The pity is that even some very experienced language learners (and successful ones) sometimes give very bad or inappropriate advice. Just because you've succeeded at something doesn't mean your methods were anything near optimum or appropriate for others.

Hey Philip, you make some good points. I think that being honest about what works for the person producing the content is important. I do also think there needs to be some responsibility on the learner to try a few different things to see what they like and what fits in with their lifestyle. That said, it is difficult as a complete beginner to assess this if you don't yet have the experience, and more importantly the habit, of learning another language

@@matt_brooks-green In advertising there is an old joke that 'everyone knows 50% of money spent on adverts is wasted. The problem is that nobody knows which 50%'. I think much the same applies to anyone who has successfully learned a language. But what makes things worse is that people often don't even realised that the problems they have with, for example, going from B2 to A1 may be rooted in things they did as a beginner (e.g. too much outputting too early).
