Alana Cawker-the Rustic wife
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ม.ค. 2016
I'm Alana and welcome to my little corner of the country. My husband (James), my daughter (Isabel) and I live on 2 acres in rural Ontario, Canada (growing zone 5b) where we are passionate about raising our own food and living the simple life.
Our patch of land may be small but it is bursting with goodness which includes several vegetable & flower gardens, laying hens, meat chickens, ducks, honeybees and sometimes pigs. What we don't grow or raise, we try to buy local and forage from our country surroundings.
I also have a great passion for down home cooking, baking, and pretty much anything old fashioned!
Whether you are seeking out a slower pace in life, are an old soul, or a city dweller looking to pull up a chair and sit a spell, you have come to the right place...welcome and I hope you enjoy our videos!

Alana, congratulations on this informative, historical video of your Aunt June. I talked with her tonight, and she mentioned what you had done. I'm now subscribed. ❤ donna
So you have raisins?
No shortening, please.
@@graceloyd350 you can use butter.
We call it bun in Jamaica it goes great with cheddar cheese
In allllll of my research i learned this: blanching is needed for veggies you will freeze for long term freezer storage for (more than several months), to reduce how fast the skin and nutrients break down. If you are going to freeze things and use them quickly within maybe a month (educated guess), you do not need to blanch. All of the vegetable-garden-harvesting families on youtube will always say to blanch before freezing. But they are harvesting large amounts of vegetables to freeze. They will not be using it all quickly, but to store away long term and eat over about 9 months until next years harvest. They need to blanch before freezing to maintain its integrity while being in the freezer for so long. I appreciate the experiment but it would make more sense to test frozen veggies that have been sitting in the freezer for 6 months - 12 months
Thank you for sharing the memories 🥰
Good morning! You are very welcome and I thank you very much for watching!
What a treat to listen to the memories, and the recipe. Thank you!
Good morning Deborah! Thank you very much for watching and for your kind message! It was fun making this video as I love to listen to my Aunt June's stories! 🌻

Good morning Kelvin! Thank you so much for your lovely message about the cake and my Aunt...she really is a gem of a person. I love listening to her stories and am very proud to share them with you all. Take care and have a great day!
So many memories in this that are familiar for me too. My mom and her friend Alma (our neighbour and my godmom who married a Canadian soldier and moved here after the war) used to sing We’ll Meet Again and many other Vera Lynn songs. I can’t hear them without thinking of her. Alma also taught me to iron when I was 6! I lost my Mom in 2020 and miss her every day. Thank you for giving me a moment to remember her and my God Mom ❤ Bless your sweet Aunt for these stories ❤ PS if you bake the cake in a loaf pan you can call it bread and eat it for breakfast 😊
Good morning Judy! What wonderful memories of your Mom and Alma! No matter how long our Moms are gone, it still feels like yesterday we lost them...I am so thankful for our memories we have! I also love the song "We'll meet again"...my Aunt June had it played at my Uncle Lorne's funeral. Take care Judy and I thank you very much for watching and for your kind words ❤
Glad you started making videos again! Looks like I have a few to catch up :)
Good morning Rem! Thank you so much for your support...you are always so kind! Take care and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Great video! Watched a few times figure this out
Thank you so much for this video and information! We are loving learning all the things about the garden and very interested in all seed saving. Hope your day is blessed!
TH-cam dropped your video in the sidebar and we are so grateful to find you!! This video was great and full of so much helpful information. We have carrots still in the garden in Ky and good to know they need a couple of frosts. So interesting that leaving the turnips another month made such a difference. Thank you for sharing your information and beautiful garden!! I'm looking forward to watching your other videos.
Hi there! Thank you very much for watching and for your lovely message! Yes, I was very happy the turnip turned out so sweet because it was not lookin' good there for them! Haha! So bitter early on! I hope your garden is giving you an abundance of goodness this year! Take care and have a wonderful evening!
We used to pull ours from the garden, brush the soil off, and eat right there. All the minerals from the soul into the body. So good.
There is nothing better or more fresh than that! You guys always had a nice garden!
I make mine with only maple syrup, but great video!!
Our one shows to start each string on opposite sides of the spool
Hi Alana awesome video thanks. I can smell those beautiful carrots 🥕 from here. Plantings like that on a raised bed is how all the commercial growers do carrots in the UK. All your vegetables look amazing, it's great going out to the garden and picking fresh vegetables yummy 😋. We are having carrots and swede for tea tonight black pepper and a nob of butter 🧈 😋. Thanks again take care and stay safe 👍 😊.
Thank you Kelvin! They really did turn out very lovely this year! James told me they use this technique here to grow them commercially too! So much for my "secret" tip! 😂Haha! Are swedes turnips? If so, I love those too, very earthy and delicious!
@@alanacawker-therusticwifeswede is very similar to turnips, where the turnips are white inside the swede is orange and your right they taste really earthy yummy. Take care and be safe 👍 😊.
I was interested in blanching because I Did not blanch mine and they were so hard and chewy . I will try blanching
@faithandfitnesswithanna Good morning! I'm sorry your beans turned out chewy when you didn't blanch them...I bet the variety of bean may make a difference? I think some of the Italian flat beans are tough when not blanched. I hope you have better luck with your next batch! Take care and thank you for watching! Have a great day 🌻
Thanks Alana! I really enjoyed your tour of your beautiful garden and watching you harvest the carrots and turnips! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Lori! We are very lucky to have such a harvest this year and even luckier that the turnips sweetened up! Haha!
Great harvest!
Thank you Bill!
Those are some beautiful carrots! Great idea to hill up the dirt. Thank you Alana😊
Thank you Lori! They turned out so lovely...I must give most of the credit to James...he is the brains behind the operation! Haha!
Your carrots are beautiful
Thank you so much Lore...they turned out really lovely this year!
Nice video Alana. Everything looks good 👍 Take care and have a blessed and safe week
Thank you Billy! I am so happy those turnip sweetened up for us...it wasn't looking too good there for a bit! Haha!
Your carrots looked really good. Nice Harvest!
Thank you Teresa! We are very lucky to have so much from this garden...lots of goodness!
I remember your Mom's toffee and candy fondly. Thanks for this, my friend. Made me smile thinking about all the memories as kids. Looks so delish.
Mom made everything good, didn't she Jess! ❤
Would this work with maple syrup in place of corn syrup? Sounds fabulous!
Good morning! I believe you can use maple syrup instead of corn syrup but I have not tried it. Here is a link to a recipe using maple syrup: bakeangel.com/4-ingredient-maple-honeycomb-candy/ I hope that helps...take care and have a great day!
Hi Alana excellent video again thank you. It's like watching a chemistry lesson when you tested the baking soda 😅. It's so fascinating to watch everything transform in the pan. That looks so yummy im sat here salivating. Take care and have a awesome weekend 😊.
Good morning Kelvin! Thank you so much...this stuff is addictive, that is for sure! I agree with you, the science behind baking is interesting! I like to learn how and why things turn out the way they do...sometimes, it alleviates the frustration of a fail! Take care and I hope you guys have a great day!
I haven’t made that for years. I think I’ll make a big batch for Christmas would be a great idea.
Good morning! That is a great idea...homemade treats for Christmas are always lovely gift!
I love this kind of candy! Thank you for sharing😊
Hi Lori! Me too...so good! Thank you for watching and have a lovely day!
I have that same type of thread, it was my grandmothers. The peppers look so pretty strung up. Thank you Alana 😊
Good morning! That thread is so sturdy! I think this spool also came from my Gramma! Thank you for watching and I hope you have a great ay!
Nice video Alana. Looks delicious 😋

Good morning Bill! So funny...James has to keep me in line, otherwise, I would have every surface covered with seeds and things drying! I feel like it is a good balance! 😀 Take care and thank you very much for watching! 🌻
Thank you ma'am! Maybe he could have a drying room built for ya? A whole nother building on the farm? Shelves, tables and racks galore! Lol
@@billbryant5225 Now you're talkin!! I like how you think Bill...great idea!
My mother made crabapple jelly. It was my favorite out of all the jellies she made. So glad you’re back!!
I have a big bowl of hot peppers, this video is a big help on how to dry them. Any suggestions on what to do with green cayenne peppers that didn’t get a chance to ripen?
Good morning! Thank you very much for watching and for your message! I had a bunch that I picked green, and I found that they all turned red after a while...perhaps if you string them up too, they will eventually all ripen!
@@alanacawker-therusticwifethank you
Hi Alana excellent video again thank you for sharing. Stringing the peppers looks like a labour of love, but sitting in the sun 🌞 makes it all worthwhile. The chickens 🐔 walking past checking if you are okay priceless, the Cockerel looks beautiful. Hope you all are doing well take care and stay safe 👍 😊.
Hi Kelvin! That sure was a labour of love...they did turn out looking very nice in the end but that was tedious! 😄 Pedro Sanchez is the name of our rooster and he is quite nosey...so are the hens! They are comical to watch strutting around the yard!
good test I just blanched some next time Ill just skip it and see how it goes. thx again.
