I don't know what I'll do with myself when you finish your trip! You have me addicted young man! I'm 87 and can't do what you're doing, but I can go along with you in my mind!
I love this comment. I'll be honest, it genuinely brought me to tears. Sometimes these long trails wear you out and knowing that others are with you, albeit virtually, really helps.
@robertpinto6515 got me in tears, lost father few years back at 89, he didn't know internet, sat around watching old movies. Let's keep you around good enjoying things like Mat adventures!
I really don't understand why people watch videos like this - for free- produced to such an excellent standard and yet can't help out the channel by giving it a thumbs up/comment. What's not to like?
Hi Matt - so much to share with you. My wife and I love your video's , thanks to Ross, and you shared some wisdom with me prior to my starting the GDMBR this June. I ran out of gas in Butte but had the time of my life and enough stories to share forever. But why I am really commenting is that I am so glad that you have changed routes. We are not only Warmshower guests but hosts and last weekend we hosted a young man, Rick Mueller, from Germany. He started in Seattle and had gone through all the west coast and lots of extra places in the Southwest US. He was into the whole Kennedy assassination wanted to visit the 6th Floor Museum where Kennedy was shot. We took him to Dealey Plaza and the theater where Oswald was arrested Saturday evening and he couldn't wait to go the the museum and other Kennedy sites on Sunday. He had a full day Sunday and stayed with another Warmshowers host that night. Monday morning he headed towards Athens, Texas but at Gun Barrel City, Tx he was struck by a truck and killed. He was only 30. We spent the last weekend with his twin brother and mother. I wanted to meet you on your trip but am more happy that you have made the decision to be safer. Safe journeys with sunshine and tailwinds... someday we will meet!
I'm so sorry. What a terrible thing to happen to somebody so young. I feel like we've lost the battle when it comes to cycling on the road. I hope we meet one day.
I just wanted to let you know that you’re a great inspiration to me. I’m 80 years old and unfortunately won’t be able to do what you’re doing. But I am riding a stationary bike, and the time just flys by when I watch you. Keep on doing what you’re doing!
You meet all kinds of people on these trips don’t you? What an experience. Well done, mate! Thanks for filming the experience. I know documenting with the drone and everything can be a pain at times, but it’s worth it! Keep on keeping on!
Hi Mat greetings from Denmark. As a tour cyclist myself, I admire how you a able to storytell and film along the way. I know how the road can wear you down at times (or to say most times), and you have the energi to make a documentary. Hats off to you sir. But we all know the reward of the trouble, epic adventure, epic scenary, epic people to meet. But you make it last, and share it with all of us. So thank you, and stay safe out there. BTW you put trans america on my ride list.
Hey Mat! Jen here from Vegas. I've been following your journey across America and I just have to say - wow! Your latest video in Montana really touched me. As a single mom, I've always dreamed of doing something adventurous like this, but never had the courage. Watching you push through those tough climbs and long stretches is so inspiring. I teared up a bit when you stopped at those hot springs. It reminded me of a special trip I took years ago with my late husband. We always talked about doing a cross-country bike tour together someday. Seeing you living that dream is bittersweet, but it's rekindled that spark in me. Your visit to the ACA headquarters was fascinating! I loved seeing all those old maps and hearing about the history. It really shows how far bike touring has come. And that Eastern Express route sounds intriguing - I'd be tempted by those rail trails too! Keep pedaling, Mat! Your journey is motivating this Uber-driving mom to maybe dust off her old bike and start training for a mini-adventure of her own. Stay safe out there, and enjoy every moment. You're living the dream for all of us armchair travelers! 🚵
I really like hearing about the admin. The planning and the reasons for decisions are interesting especially for those of us doing this vicariously and wondering if/how we might do it. I could watch a whole video just on the planning!
I loved your reports about your Tour Divide and was very jealous that I can't do it (yet). But I was skeptical about your Trans American tour. Everything I feared has come true. This is absolutely not something I would ever want to do. I'd rather let a bear eat me than drive the Transam on roads like that 50% of the time together with thousands of cars and trucks. Stay healthy and I hope you still enjoy it - kind regards from germany
When were you in Hamilton, Montana? I stayed in the same Quality Inn during the weekend of 16-Aug-2024 for the Bitter Root Highland Games. I had a meal and a pint at Bitter Root Brewing, just down the road. I'm contemplating a coast to coast ride (if I can save up enough vacation). Except I'm looking at riding from the northern tip of Washington to the northern tip of Maine, since I now live in South Eastern Washington. These videos are very useful for seeing people's set ups and travel strategies.
Close. I was there on the 12th August. I think we went to Bitter Root Brewing. Good luck on your coast to coast. Is that a route you're making up yourself or an established route?
Mat Ryder is having the experience of a lifetime, interesting isn't it? Meeting people and seeing places is the best of what the World can offer, and it is a basic part of the human experience. Oh and you get to see the land up close which is the best way to do it. Cheers.
Almost a week since the last installment! I'm undergoing withdrawal. Has Ross escaped his enclosure? I checked the Times and BBC websites and didn't see any reports. Thanks for the great videos!!
I'm a 24 year old currently planning a bikepacking trip from Seattle to Los Angeles because of you! You've quickly become my favourite TH-camr, cheers mate!
We ALL need a Bob! Another cracking video - love following your adventures and learning about the world - thank you for sharing 🙏🏻 and Keep Peddling and Uploading - brilliant stuff!!
Another great episode. The Eastern Express seems like the best plan. Its been fun watching you cycle through areas i rode through a few years ago (in the other direction). And i aee you are up over 10k subscribers. Congratulations! I mean, when we met you were around 8500, but I dont want to take all of the credit. Brilliant work, cycling, filming, b roll and editing (Ross).
I also think you inhaled more smoke than you realize. The cumulative effects can hit you when you least expect it. I live with it in Eastern Washington and have to cut back on cycling in the peak of summer fire season. I vote you try out the rail trails as well. 😊
Matt, take heart that your videos are ultra special to those who watch. I’m working on a long term project that flummoxes and frustrates me. When I saw you had dropped a video, I saved it for the end of the day, like a special salve - lol. Pitiful, I know. But you never disappoint. For 36 minutes last evening, my day was done and I was on your ride, outside on the trail, transported to the climbs, the fatigue, the beautiful scenery, the little towns. Thank you for that. Again! Very much looking forward to the next video. I’m probably gonna need it.
Keep up the good work Mat - stumbled across the first Trans American video at the weekend and have already consumed the GDMBR and your European adventure in the new campervan. Now trying to work out how soon I can retire/take it easier and plan my own Trans American adventure.
I love the shots over the handlebars! Trying to prepare for doing my own ride next year and watching your videos whilst on a bike in the gym (don't have my own yet) and it feels like I'm there with you. Safe travels and thank you for these videos
Hi Mat another fantastic episode some of the drone footage is insane!! Love them small towns and as for the people you meet well friends for life i guess brilliant trip so far thanks for bringing us along 👍
I saw one of the comments that said you aren’t coming thru Kentucky now? If not, safe travels wherever you go and if so, reach out if you come through Kentucky and need anything!
Hi vis vest. I,ve got two, found on the road,, new condition not a mark on them. Handy for those bits of road with exposure to the dreadful evil of the motor car.
Riggins is a cool town, I have been there many times. A couple of great bars, and I have shopped at that store, and have eaten at Kates. Too bad you did not stop in Whitebird, love Whitebird.
A great and entertaining video Richard, some lovely scenery caught in part with some very good drone footage. Lovely river to cool off in and the springs aswell. There's always somewhere to eat some very nice food and drink and camping spots aswell. Nice for you to meet a companion and riding partner and Bob of course. Glad that bug hasn't affected you too much take care and thanks for sharing 👏 👋
Well that's good timing. Just finished the last episode and this pops up. It's belting down here in South Wales Mat so stop complaining about the heat 😅 I'm really enjoying your trips. I've done a few small bikepacking adventures but your videos have me dreaming of bigger things. Take care and thanks👍
Did the same trip a few years ago. Great to revisit the roads. Its just keeps getting better, Wyoming is just spectacular and colerado is stunning. really enjoy the videos
I'm so glad I found your channel Mat, absolutely brilliant content and extremely inspiring. Keep it up mate and I'm glad you are taking time to do a bit of sightseeing and chilling out. Its just another day in paradise 😄 👍
You really capture the reality of cycle touring. I don’t know how it appeals to non-cycle tourists, but to one who is riding long term, it totally resonates. I am not so old, yet I started touring with maps and paper itineraries. I don’t regret them and I much prefer GPS navigation, not having to bother about directions and stopping for five minutes at each intersection. I do look at maps and landmarks beforehand and during the ride. Maybe it’s due to my experience of using maps. Anyway, thank you for your down-to-earth video diaries.
My wife and I really enjoy touring and bikepacking. We are a just a few years from retirement, so keeping ourselves entertained watching your videos and with one week trips; The ADK Park, PA Grand Canyon, and a few others….cannot wait to ride the Divide and the TransAm. I never thought of scavenging rags to clean the drivetrain….great idea. Be safe!
I find all of your commentary entertaining, useful, or informative. So, if you're worried your commentary is "rambling" or "boring" or otherwise "administrative," it's all appreciated and I enjoy it.🙂
I find a similar situation that starts around that 50-60 mile mark and I just start to disconnect and it begins to become boring, mundane, etc. I find that I stop looking around me and really enjoying the ride and instead, just focus on putting the miles on and completing the ride.
The section out of Kooskia ID on Rt 12 over Lolo pass is absolutely beautiful! I’ve ridden it while on the TransAm and have driven it numerous times as my mom lives in the area.
Great to see you are appreciating every part of your trip and taking it all in. DO NOT have too many expectations, and thou shalt not be disappointed 😂 👍 Another great video. It's looking hard work but fabulous.
Go for the Eastern Express and maybe my husband and I will see you on the Katy Trail! We will be starting the KT around Sept 4 and ending in Washington DC. I'll keep peeking in on your live location to see if we will cross paths. Maybe you will want to end in DC as well!? My husband, a regular viewer, introduced your channel to me and of course I'm addicted!
Hi. Glad you liked these videos. I'm getting on the Bike Non Stop today and I think that gets on the Katy Trail and finishes in DC. Maybe I'll see you out there.
Against all odds you made it off that horrible road onto a stunning one with beautiful scenery. Still looks hot, I know as cyclists we shouldn’t but sometimes I wish it would rain down. Glad you’re stopping and taking your time, you can’t hurry love. Safe travels and enjoy another day in paradise.
Glad to hear you’re stopping at places and enjoying the day, instead of riding on past. I have a bad habit of not taking the time and just getting from point A to B.
Great stuff Mat … don’t know how you consistently knock out these 60+ mile days ! I did 65 and next day could only manage a slow 35… what’s your secret !? Loving these small towns … you’re so right - best part of the USA, much much better than the big cities. Great local food stops and bars with friendly folk, love it … Looking forward to the next part of the journey 😊
Hi. I've checked my average and it's almost exactly 50 miles per day so far. It always ends up around there. I think as these trips go on it gets easier. My legs are feeling pretty strong. Cheers
Turns out, Mat, we are moving. So my previous invitation for you to stop and stay with us will d you no good, because we will no longer be near the trans am. Actually, my wife heard you were coming and said, "we're moving!" 😂 So you might as well take the northern route. We are really enjoying your trip though.
Mat, my wife and I rode the TransAm in 2019 but broke from the ACA route in Walden, CO and followed a modified Eastern Express for the remainder. We enjoyed riding both the Katy Trail and the GAP/C&O while ending in Washington DC. Really enjoy your content...GDMBR in plans for '25!!
I understand exactly what you mean by „this is the best of america“. I can totally relate and feel what you feel there. I hope you encounter more of rural America, small towns in the middle of nowhere, with lovely bars. Enjoy your trip!🚲
proper pacing. that's the way to enjoy oneself. we are loving the food breaks and all the socializing. those little electrolyte packs are an antidote when you get feeling frumpy. i bought them by the 10s in the heat. get them at any sport shop out west. fantastic vid series. can't say enough. KUDOS to Pat and Bob.
Loving this series. Been watching as soon as they are uploaded. Quick question: What audiobook are you listening to that is keeping you company on this journey?
what is making that noise when you shift is the metal plate on the derailer it is still touching the chain, tighten the cable and that will pull the plate slightly away and things will be good again, nice trip you narrate your trips very well
Glad to see another video. You made the right choice by avoiding the "back to nature" time. Some people really need their clothes. Say no more. Your recovery on the climb comment is right on. I found years back when starting to ride more that is was not just how short of breadth I felt climbing but how fast I recovered that told me what kind of shape I was in. My resting heart rate seemed to correlate with this too. I have to wonder if not feeling well or like having a cold was the smoke you inhaled. It is particulate matter after all. Keep up the good work.
i despise tiny shoulders and big trucks. too many times i tell myself "i shouldn't be on this road." sometimes there is no plausible alternative and you just have to put your head down, pedal hard, watch your mirrors religiously and get thru it asap. love the drone shots of the grain fields, reminds me of my home in canada. speaking of which...any plans on doing a trans-can trip one day? great show, great channel...keep it up and thanks.
@@matryderadventures i think you might find the prairies a bit long and boring (about 1250 km straight line) and also windy. but looking forward to that set of videos for sure. good luck, sir.
Inexplicably I forgot my filter. It would definitely be possible if you had one. I've only needed to carry more than 3 litres once or twice so far. I've bought water purification tablets for emergencies.
Hey Matt. Im on the GDMBR in the Basin reaching Rawlins on Friday. Where do you cross over the route on your trip? - maybe meet up for a beer (or a coffee and a pop tart) if we're passing. Finding your report from the gmbr v useful for my trip planning. Keep up the great work Martin Martin h
What’s your strategy for avoiding saddle sores? Do u use padded shorts (with chamois) or something else (merino boxers and shorts) - what specific brands/styles? Same setup as gmbr?
I have an Ergon SMC saddle. No padded shorts. I have saddle sores so my strategy is not working. I don't know whether it's just a case of accepting them and managing them. I use an antiseptic barrier cream which helps , but I have them and they're annoying.
@@matryderadventures which SMC? They offer the SMC Core Men, SMC Sport Gel Men, and the SMC Men… what shorts combo do you wear? Anything special like merino boxers or compression shorts or Lycra or bike shorts with the pad cut out?
Mat, even if you take the northern route I can still meet you in Colorado for those 3 beers I owe you. Just give us as much heads up as possible in order to make plans. Look forward to seeing you. cheers.
Hi. I'll be on the Bike Non Stop route later today and will probably stay on there until I reach DC. I'm in Duboise at the moment and will probably go around 60-70 miles today. Hopefully it still works out. 4 beers sounds good 🙂
Hey Mat the journey is progressing well, a few sketchy roads by the look of it, but a lot of the scenery is fantastic. Loving the drone footage, it gives a superb dimension to be able to see top down. Is the chain now in good fettle?, we were mega impresed at how well organised the Adventure Cycling HQ were, very American. Polite, welcoming, professional, and you could actually look at their records. Do you have any stretching routine Pre and post ride? and do you have to do any upper body exercises and stretching? All the best and well done also to Ross!
Hi. The ACA was very interesting and they were lovely people. The chain is fine but needs piling every day. I am not disciplined enough to stretch, and the upper body exercises I planned have fallen by the wayside. You've prompted me to try to get back into the habit of doing both. Cheers 👍
Mat a quick question on your gearing ... I was able to catch your rear cassette 11x42 .. but what is your front chainrings .. please .. thank you Glenn
Thats what I did the Southern Tour with Mat 24 years ago. . The fold out maps. They were located under my Carradice Keswick handlebar bag plastic clear cover. A canvas bag that leaked in very heavy rain. With the maps and now a Wahoo Bolt GPS computer I agree that you looked around more with the maps to make sure you were on the right route. Now you just look down at your head unit and not around you. Intresting comment. 🤔
I don't know what I'll do with myself when you finish your trip! You have me addicted young man! I'm 87 and can't do what you're doing, but I can go along with you in my mind!

If you demand a thumbs up , then I'm thumbs up 👍 499 ! Safe travels and go find some rail trails.
Funnily enough, I think that's going g to happen soon.
Stunning. Glad you got healthy. Too many folks getting sick right now. Stay healthy and enjoy the time
Fantastic yet again Mat ..a c a headquarters a real treat to see super interesting. Thanks for sharing 👍
Glad to hear you’re stopping at places and enjoying the day, instead of riding on past. I have a bad habit of not taking the time and just getting from point A to B.
Great video Mat, stay safe!!!
Great stuff Mat … don’t know how you consistently knock out these 60+ mile days ! I did 65 and next day could only manage a slow 35… what’s your secret !?
Loving these small towns … you’re so right - best part of the USA, much much better than the big cities. Great local food stops and bars with friendly folk, love it …
Looking forward to the next part of the journey 😊
Hi. I've checked my average and it's almost exactly 50 miles per day so far. It always ends up around there. I think as these trips go on it gets easier. My legs are feeling pretty strong. Cheers
@@matryderadventures cheers ! Great stamina you have … I will keep at it 😀
Hey Mat
Arlene and Bill from Yellowstone.
Hope the beers hit the spot and all is well.
Safe travels!!!
Hey Bill and Arlene. Beers were awesome thanks. All is good so far. Cheers 👍
I know I smell pretty bad but..... 🤣🤣. Good luck with the move.
lol…the second I saw him I said “Phil Collin’s”!!!! 😂
Interesting. I'll be getting on the Bike Non Stop route within the next few days. I feel like quieter roads are needed.
Great channel Mat. Spotted Ian Hibells bike up on the wall at the HQ
I understand exactly what you mean by „this is the best of america“. I can totally relate and feel what you feel there. I hope you encounter more of rural America, small towns in the middle of nowhere, with lovely bars. Enjoy your trip!🚲
Another brilliant video. Pleased that you have met up with someone. Keep the great content coming.
Love Montana! I did a 400 mile bike packing ride there in 2019! The most fun thing I have ever done on my bike! Another excellent video!
Excellent video as usual!
awesome drone shots man
Demand met 👍 and subscribed .... am loving the series... Thanks MAT ...
proper pacing. that's the way to enjoy oneself. we are loving the food breaks and all the socializing. those little electrolyte packs are an antidote when you get feeling frumpy. i bought them by the 10s in the heat. get them at any sport shop out west.
fantastic vid series. can't say enough. KUDOS to Pat and Bob.
What a great video series, stay safe out there. Wish you were coming through Georgia.
60 miles is enough! Love the video, love the landscape. Roll on the next video…… I wonder if you’ll take the route to New York 🤔
Good info on the alternate route especially using the old railroad lines.
Great series. Definitely looking forward to seeing more
Loving this series. Been watching as soon as they are uploaded. Quick question: What audiobook are you listening to that is keeping you company on this journey?
I'm glad you're enjoying this trip. I'm listening to 'Hail Mary' by Andy Weir.
12:52 great drone work!
Hey Mat.
Arlene and Bill in Yellowstone.
Hope the beers hit the spot and all
Is going well. Hope the shoulders are wide.
what is making that noise when you shift is the metal plate on the derailer it is still touching the chain, tighten the cable and that will pull the plate slightly away and things will be good again, nice trip you narrate your trips very well
Excellent. Thanks. I' have a day off tomorrow and will make that adjustment. Cheers
I’m in Colorado going west. Hope to see you. Trans American Tour
Thanks. It may well have been the smoke. It seems to come and go which is strange. Cheers 👍
Maybe an asthmatic like effect from an infection or irritation. @@matryderadventures
Thanks
Awesome. Thanks. The beer I'm holding right now is on you. Cheers 👍
i despise tiny shoulders and big trucks. too many times i tell myself "i shouldn't be on this road." sometimes there is no plausible alternative and you just have to put your head down, pedal hard, watch your mirrors religiously and get thru it asap.
love the drone shots of the grain fields, reminds me of my home in canada. speaking of which...any plans on doing a trans-can trip one day?
great show, great channel...keep it up and thanks.
I will definitely do the Trans Canada route. It looks incredible.
@@matryderadventures i think you might find the prairies a bit long and boring (about 1250 km straight line) and also windy.
but looking forward to that set of videos for sure.
good luck, sir.
Enjoyable and entertaining. Looking forward to next installment. Stay safe 👍
Thank you Matt! Stay safe out there!
Wow great video! Thanks to both of you.
Great video. Beautiful scenery. A quick question - any reason you can’t just filter the river water and drink that?
Inexplicably I forgot my filter. It would definitely be possible if you had one. I've only needed to carry more than 3 litres once or twice so far. I've bought water purification tablets for emergencies.
Hey Matt. Im on the GDMBR in the Basin reaching Rawlins on Friday. Where do you cross over the route on your trip? - maybe meet up for a beer (or a coffee and a pop tart) if we're passing. Finding your report from the gmbr v useful for my trip planning.
Keep up the great work

Hi. I think I've crossed the GDMBR already. I'm in Duboise and heading east. Shame.
If you're going through Rawlins in the next couple of days - ill be camping at Walmart or the KOA.
I don't know if anyone has asked and haven't heard you say anything but how is your new saddle and shorts setup? Enjoy your videos very much. Thanks.
I have saddle sores but they seem to be improving. Honestly, I have no idea whether I have the right strategy or not.
4 beers sounds good 🙂
@@matryderadventures 4 beers it is. Let me know when you think you would get to Orin and I can meet you.
Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures Top job! I always need it if riding drop bars, enjoy the journey, good luck.
State of Kentucky here ROLL ON 🚴🚴
Sorry. I'll be getting on the Bike Non Stop soon and I don't think it goes through Kentucky. That might all change though.
Wow. You rode with Phil Collins and had beers with J K Simmons.
Mat a quick question on your gearing ... I was able to catch your rear cassette 11x42 .. but what is your front chainrings .. please .. thank you Glenn
Hi. It's. 2X front chainring 30/46t
I hope Wyoming is better for you.
Those trucks are frightening to me, and you can't spray them with your bear spray.
