    Hi Mat. I am a 52 year old family dad from Denmark and I thought many times to comment or write you. I followed your videos, the GDMBR in particular and was very inspired. I Have watched all Ryan Van duzer video and he got me starting to dream of the GBMBR, But it was you who convinced me that it is a dream that could come true. In one of your videos you said -"you can do it, just do it" (or something like that) and thats when I took the decision to do the GDMBR. I have now bought my self af Tout Terrain with Pinion gearbox and is woorking on buying stuff from the gear list. The trip is planed for 2026 - a bit out in the future, but this is for worklife and budget reasons. I just want to say thank you from the heart for your videos and inspiration. Now this comment got a little long - sorry for that 🙂All the best Jesper

      Hi Jesper. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I love seeing comments like this. The GDMBR is an amazing trail. I'm sure you're going to love it our there. If you have any questions about the route feel free to message me at matryder2@gmail com
      The Tout Terrain Pinion is a really nice bike. John (from the GDMBR videos) has one and he loved his. Cheers.

    Thank you Mat. Now in my 70s I know I will never cycle the distances you do but I still get great pleasure from watching you. I think for most of us it would be expensive but if you really wanted to do it it wouldn't be unachievable financially if you were determined enough to do it. I don't we should forget either how tough it must be to be seen riding off into the distance and then having to return to get your camera. Finally don't undersell yourself because you come across has being a down to earth fella who has a friendly disposition. I cannot wait for January. Best wishes Ted

    Glad you like the ride and the people you meet along the way. As far as starting earlier, you probably would have had difficulty getting over McKenzie Pass and the Rockies. With meeting people you did ride with Ed and by abandoning the Transam probably missed out on meeting more riders. Car traffic, I think it depends on where you were at. I imagine riding through Cincinnati wasn't exactly car free. Maybe in the future, the nonstop would become the new Transam. I hope to.ride the Transam because of its historical importance, the people willing to house cyclists, and the scenery.

    I enjoy the videos and the honesty. You do present yourself as if we were riding together. In fact my wife and kids laugh at me when I get excited and tell them "my bike ridin' buddy" has a new video out. I think it's so personal because there is no background music (thank you for that) and you let us see you when you are struggling a bit. And who can't relate to that?Well done sir! Cheers!

    It's lovely how you always show your gratitude to those who have supported your adventures and experiences. Cost is something I think we can all overlook when we are watching your trips. However, you can always make more money, but you can not get time back ,so good on ya. Well done on the jogging front, I should imagine you feel like you're being watched and scrutinised when doing it, but remember, people only get a glimpse of you, so no one is really studying you! Keep going. Maybe you could be the next Anika Rice!
    Ps..... I can think of one thing in hindsight you would have done differently - gone PANTLESS from the start😂

    People like you Matt, you are good to watch, very entertaining, and self deprecating. You should accept some sponsorship if offered but choose wisely, a bike company or outdoor clothing brand. Who wouldn’t want you promoting their products, take a bit of money towards flights etc As you have just shown those trips are not cheap. Go on we won’t mind 👏

    I have a couple of questions Mat, if you get the time to answer:
    Is there an average time / distance that you feel the need to take on calories or rest? I know it is going to depend on the terrain and weather, but do you have a fuel up interval?
    does caffeine help your performance?
    Do you feel it in your legs (aches) after a decent distance? or do you find as your fitness naturally builds up over a few rides you feel no noticeable aches?
    How do you find the geometry of a drop bar bike for distance? do you experience any neck or back pain? I think this might by avoided by getting a perfect fitting bike, but I have noticed that newer frames tend to have long top tubes resulting in a greater reach to the bars.
    Amazingly vintage bikes seem to have a more natural "fit" with less fettling needed, but that might just be me.
    I would be interested to hear your experiences, and if you needed to tweak your ride or if you found a perfect fit up front.
    Thanks.

    • @matryderadventures

      I don't have any kind of strategy for refuelling etc. while I'm out on these trips. I really should be more scientific as I'm certain that it would improve every aspect of the ride. It's something I need to work on.
      I definitely feel a boost from caffeine. I carried a few caffeine gels at one point on the TransAm, and the boodst I recieved from those was noticeable. Otherwise, when I was getting to the end of a long day, I'd make a quick, cold instant coffe and that also helped.
      I notice fewer ached as the trip progresses. By the time I was half way through the TransAm, I felt like I could ride forever. My legs were not an issue at all. My wrists, shoulders and back would complain by the end of a long day but not my legs.
      I liked the drop bars. I was sat quite upright and spent 90% of the time in the drops. A buike fit may have helped. I had a very short, inclined stem which helped with the reach. I don't think I'd change anything regarding fit. I'm far from an expert, but I think your body adapts to the geometry, provided it's reasonably close to an ideal set up. Hope that helps.

      @@matryderadventures Great to read your reply, thank you. I think you are right in that you definately grow accustomed to bike geometry when you put in the miles, and it is always amazing how quickly your body gets used to being hard at it, or not at all. Soon lets you know if you have been off the pace too long!
      I ike drop bars, they always feel more exciting for some reason, probably due to an illusion of being sportier! but sometimes a flat bar and a higher position is much more comfortable, and better for visibility.
      All best, thanks again.

    Hi Mat, I just finished watching the Trans Am Non-Stop series and wow. What an adventure, very impressive. I was actually one of the original Bikecentennial riders in 1976 and did the traditional Trans Am route from Oregon to Colorado, as I was starting college in 1976, I did not do the whole thing. In 2023, I tried to finish the rest to Virginia but the heat was too intense and only made it to western Kansas. All of that aside, thank you for an amazing journey, I love your English sense of humor and your marvel of America. You saw it as most of us don't even see it. You did great and captured it all in this series with expertise.
    If you ever come to Denver, we'll hit a couple of breweries. Good luck on your future rides and it sounds like New Zealand is next. That will be awesome. Thank you again and cheers!

    Considering that you're on an active trip for 80 days, $45 or $60 per day doesn't seem expensive. You have to eat even if you stayed home, so how much EXTRA are you spending? Plus, you're outdoors, cycling, and experiencing things and destinations that make it priceless! Food: The more nutrient-dense the food you consume, the more energy you'll have and the better your body will adapt and recover. I'm sure it's difficult to find healthy food on many rural or remote sections on the route. Lastly, I really enjoy being able to watch your videos while you're actually out riding the route. So, a big thank you to both you and Ross for your time and commitment to film and edit these videos, so that we can almost be on the journey with you in real time. Big Sur should have been great but it was closed due to landslides. Had to bus around which kinda sucked. Southern CA through Los Angeles was better than I expected. Lots of bike paths. Anti-climatic finish line as I couldn't get to the border wall. Sewage contamination closed the final mile or so. Problem now is that everything I do is compared to the GDMBR. Like everyone else, I'll be looking forward to that trip, and anything you put out between now and then. Enjoy your break while the rest of us look forward to enjoying your next great adventure.
    Note to anyone wanting to ride in the Northwest US like Mat did. Starting earlier is a good idea because it increases your chances of avoiding forest fires and the debilitating smoke. Mat missed out on some great views because of the smoke, and he suffered a bit in Central Oregon when he had to pass way too close to one of the big fires. I'm sure the smoke he inhaled then affected him negatively for a good part of the trip.

    Matt, I found your 'main' GDMBR video a while ago (the 3 hour one), and I was immediately hooked. I then went back and watched the entire GDMBR series, and caught up on ALL of your videos, including this TransAm series. You are in the top 3 of my fav TH-camrs and simply love all of your content and will watch anything you produce. I know this is going to sound like a criticism, but its not meant to be. I will admit, this TramsAm series was a shift vs the GDMBR (to me). I enjoyed both, but with the GDMBR, I loved that at the end of each day, you needed to find a spot to camp, eat, get water and get some rest. Whereas in this one, it seemed like every day, one of your amazing Subscribers were meeting you, buying you a meal/beer and giving you a nice warm/safe place to stay/sleep. Which is awesome for you. That's amazing and I would do the same if I was close to your route! But alas, I didn't find it as enjoyable. And as someone who would love to follow in your footsteps, but doesn't have a TH-cam channel (and no desire to create one), this wouldn't be the same experience for the bulk of us who wouldn't have this level of support. I would have enjoyed it more if you were rogue/stealth camping most of the time. Again, I am sure this is coming across as negative, but its not intended to be. As I can't wait for your next adventure, but that's simply by two cents. Thanks for the many hours of great content!

      @matryderadventures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is not negative at all. I'm really grateful for the feedback and your points are completely valid. I'm not sure, but I imagine I'll be doing more off road trails in the future, where camping is more likely. I never considered your point that the level of support I received is a bit unrealistic for anyone considering the same ride. Thanks for pointing that out. Cheers.

      @@matryderadventures Thanks Matt. I guess for me (and I am only one happy Subscriber), the TransAm series was certainly as enjoyable, but maybe less 'relatable' if that makes sense? I mean, I was so inspired by your GDMBR, that I actually think I could replicate that trip/experience. But I wouldn't be able to with this, as I wouldn't have the level of support helping along the way (again, not a criticism). That said, I would LOVE to watch you travel from Alaska to Florida (just as a random example), on nothing but your amazing Subscribers help/assistance along the way (as in, see if you wouldn't have to camp or buy a meal/beer for yourself!) That would be a challenge and series that I would love to see you try and do! I hope Ross releases a long edit of the TransAm, as I would love to watch that, and I can't wait for the New Zealand trip!! Cheers to you and Ross for producing this AMAZING content. Its better than anything on TV.

The imagery is really well done, and you do some beautiful drone images, ones that really describe the beauty and vastness (breathtaking of Midwest farm land!). I’m a fan, Best Wishes!

    The wife and I enjoyed watching your whole tour across America Matt.
    I thought your costs were very reasonable. We did a cycle tour from Calgary to Vancouver then down the Pacific Coast and across to Austin Tx in 2018 over 150 days and from memory it was about $36k (AUD) including flights from Australia for both of us so similar amount when adjusted to USD & we did some extravagant things along the way.
    Thanks for sharing.

  • @mucklark6943
    @mucklark6943 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think a lot of people get caught up in the cost calculations but it is what it is. You're not packing a full kitchen and buying for the week. Eating is definitely a big cost factor to consider when you factor in that you're physically active the whole day and automatically need to eat more than normal. When people say, "oh but that's a lot of money to be spending every day", I ask them how much money do they put in their car every day ... LOL. Yes, you can do these trips on a minimum budget, but will that be fun? Thanks for the amazing Video series. I would never have even considered cycling across the US before watching this. You presented it in such a "normal" and down-to-earth way, with all the ups and downs, showing that in reality just about anyone could ride a bike anywhere. If your trips ever take you across southern Germany, drop me a line!

      Hi. I lack a proper strategy when it comes to diet on trail. It was mainly a diet of instant Knor Ride sides with either Slim Jim's/pepperoni slices/tuna packets mixed in. Occasionally I'd have instant mash instead of rice. When in town, I ate as much as I could and, where possible added a salad. Unfortunately I lost too much weight. I am the worst person to ask about diet. Sorry.

    Thanks for the recap. I didn’t see it mentioned in the video. But maybe one of the others. How many of the 80 days were spent camping, with hosts and in hotels.
    I feel you on the diet. I road the Great American Rail trail last year. Lost 15 pounds in it, and gained 30 when I got home because I still had he mentality of eating whatever I want but not the exercise to match it.
    GDMBR next year for me 🤞

    This was great and your Trans-Am was a joy to follow. Considering your flight cost your budget was very reasonable. I would like to know how it compared with your AT thru-hike? Most people without your community and trail magic would spend as much as double for food is my guess? I look forward to your adventure in New Zealand! Happy holidays!

    • @matryderadventures
      @matryderadventures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're probably right. Sadly, I didn't make note of the costs on the AT. It was a longer trip but I didn't have as many towns to spend money in.

  • @LeeJonesNPT

    I will be out in NZ the same time as you, my family live outside Auckland and i have spent most winters there since about 2006.Ii have spent a fair bit of time cycling out there, the one thing i would highlight is that things seem to take a long time especially travelling. The days are shorter than we are used to especially compared to summers in South Wales. Distances between towns especially once away from the major cities can be very long and accessing spare parts can be difficult, however the people are very friendly and have a make do and mend attitude and will try and fix anything, i had a puncture on a hired bike in the middle of nowhere on the Coromandel peninsula, i approached a farm for some help and had the best welcome and help from the elderly couple who lived there. The start from the Bay of Islands in the north Island has some of the steepest and longest hills i have cycled on and i live In the Bwlch, Rhigos, Beacons area and ride the Tour of Pembrokeshire every year so I know about hills. The other issue you might face is that wild camping is frowned upon in some places but the i centres in most towns will point you in the right direction and how to get permits from the DOC. Watch out for those black midge like bugs around water and campsites you will need some strong repellant like Deet or they will eat you alive. You will have a great trip i am sure and so jealous of the opportunity you have for a unique experience. Make sure you get over the jet lag before cycling it is a hell of a flight! I will look forward to your video, i am returning to the UK on the 2nd Feb so we might get the opportunity to meet up if our paths cross.

    I think the budget is pretty reasonable for an older person. As you commented, for an older person, the riding alone is enough of a strain that having to find camping and cook meals every day add to that strain. I've ridden the GDMBR and the TransAm and my budgets were similar to yours. This past summer I rode the XWA (cross-Washington) and although a shorter trip, the budget was in the same $70 range.
    I was interested to see your experience on the Non-stop route and may ride a section of that in a couple of years (next summer is already planned). Good to see you pioneer it to get an idea of what to expect.
    Good luck on your New Zealand trip and I look forward to seeing that as well, since that is also on my list.

    Your vids are giving me ideas. I’m a bit older than you, Mat, and I have a medical history that I think I’m getting through on the bright side. I’m looking to extend out in some of the areas you traveled in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland and NJ. The costs for your full trip seem really reasonable compared to a cruise or even a motor tour. Seems completely worth it.
