We're RUSTY! Making mistakes along the North Brittany Coast | Ep 31

This week we're heading from Roscoff to L'Aber Wrac'h, a 35 nautical mile sail along the north coast of Brittany. We filmed this video right at the start of our sailing season, and we were very rusty. We made some mistakes along the way, first in the marina and later as we entered L'Aber Wrac'h. Discovered you lovely people last week. Amazing channel! I binge watched everything last week. Subscribed and was very happy to see the latest episode pop up this morning. Love the Malö. Exactly the kind of boat which I’d like to buy one day. That or a Najad or a Hallberg-Rassy (something about those windshields you know…). Anyway, You guys handle her amazingly, they are not as nimble as the bolt on keel yachts, but much safer. And that is what’s important in which you are planning to do! Anyway, I’m rambling. If you’re still laughing, you’re winning! The tide in Roscoff marina can also be a real handful; as it’s open ended, it just rips through in either direction. We were asked to wait by the dory boat while they figured out a berth for us (not easy!). We then followed them to a berth, but they didn’t let us know until very late where it was, meaning we overshot. Trying to turn in that tide with the wind was a total non starter. I asked for a push from the Dory, or we’d have been the same as you guys. Straight away I said to Faye, “next time, I just reverse!” 😂 we’ve found French marinas to be significantly more tidal than in the UK, where many marinas have locks or surrounding breakwaters. They definitely keep you on your toes! Great to hear you’re finding your stride. Makes everything more enjoyable 🥂

    • @DelfinoDiscovers
      @DelfinoDiscovers 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, it makes us happy to hear that others required the Dory! The challenge for us was a desire to be out early in the morning to catch the favourable tide down the coast. Glad to hear you guys navigated it better than us though :) Totally agree. The marina in stornoway had a bit of tide but otherwise I struggle to think of any marinas that had tide running across the fairways in the same way as we've experienced in Brittany. Roscoff wasn't the only example but we wised up quickly.

    @SailingSnowGum 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    With respect to leaving Roscoff at 3:00, it's all about, and always about, the wind. 🙂 Suggestion: like our former boat Snow Gum, your boat has two foresails which add a lot of windage at one end. You were trying to bring the bow around to starboard but the wind was blowing the bow to port. You ran out of room. The wind is treating your foresails like the feathers of an arrow. Use this to your advantage when you need to manoeuvre upwind in tight spaces and at low speed. Let the bow go downwind. Let the boat rotate, then reverse out with the foresails behaving like the feathers of an arrow. Voila! I stopped watching at 4:30. I'll now start again and see if this is what you did. 🙂 Edit: You know for next time and that's great. Thanks for the video and for showing us your journey and the lovely coast of Brittany.

    once you got in trouble you did the right thing by going slowly, thinking about things and then calling for help. it often feels counter intuitive, but reversing out as you concluded in the end can often be the best option. Grab some time in a marina and practice different approaches, it is really helpful and fun. Fair winds and keep having a great time ⛵

      We had a good 15 minutes waiting for help whilst we were rafted so had a good chance to study the other boat for damage and didnt see any. We also let the capitanerie know. The man on shift took a look and then we didn't hear from them so I assume it is all good. On studying the footage it appeared that their rubrail made contact with our stanchion support. That stanchion support was quite bent so there was damage on our side but fortunately an easy fix.

    Hi,. Everyone who has sailed a lot in tidal waters has found themselves pressed against the dock with the bow being blown downwind, even reversing out might not have worked if you have as much prop walk as we do on our Malo. You actually handled it very well, being happy to raft against the boat and generally not panicking too much apart from in the moment, which again we all do. Clearly you are moving into easier waters, I wonder if the tide was also hindering you off that dock as the whole boat was being pushed in-shore? You have probably already forgotten about tides as you travel towards the warmer waters, but it is important to consider them when you are being pushed on. You might also have tried springing off the other boat which might have helped, or springing using ropes off the pontoon to get your bow upwind. Anyway I really enjoy your videos keep going, you have a beautiful boat!

    • @DelfinoDiscovers
      @DelfinoDiscovers 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the detailed comment! Indeed tidal currents may well have had an impact, in particular I think it may have been carrying us across the fairway and restricting the amount of space we had to make our manoevre. We've been really careful about currents over the last month, the currents in Brittany were surprisingly intense at the dock (more so I'd say than in Scotland).

    One thing to remember the propeller is not as efficient in reverse , if the wind is strong you might not be able to back into the wind. This happened to me luckily I could turn in an empty berth and got out going forward.

    Great video - Its very good to show the good, bad, and ugly!..it shows how stressful things can get...and, to be fair to you, in the Shell "Channel Pilot" it does mention how difficult it can be in Roscoff marina. When we came in, there had just been an accident - unsurprising when the design of the marina allows a strong tide (over 5 knots when we came in!) to run through it. Better for the environment, but a challenge for boaters! The way we got in was to exceed the speed of the tide to enable us to turn our bow into it... luckily it was slack tide and a gentle breeze when we left! I always wonder whether it is a help or a hinderance to hook the main halyard down at the mast, to stop the sail rising....but I now see it is probably the lesser of two evils!

    • @SailingSnowGum
      @SailingSnowGum 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for this Laura. Re seasickness, my wife Carolyn had some problems, but me - not. Here’s some thoughts. Susceptibility is very much related to two triggers: how good your balance is, with the other being anxiety. They’re not interrelated but can compound. As a young woman your balance is most likely very good, which means your brain is still paying close attention to the signals it gets from eyes and ears. This is the reason why the simple act of helming the boat makes such a difference, compared with being inside. When helming, your brain can make sense of the movement your body is feeling and seeing, with the horizon being the best, unmoving reference point. At night or downstairs it gets difficult, though land lights, distant ships and stars can help. A key suggestion is, keep your head level. Try not to look down. Doing this makes it so much harder for your brain to cope. Anxiety arising from concern about the boat and the sea state and navigation challenges exacerbates oncoming seasickness from your senses being mucked around , or can cause it in its own right. Experience with and trust in your boat will help. It’s a good boat. Enjoy the ride as you would a roller coaster at a theme park. 😀 Imagine being in a passenger plane in bumpy weather. Do you grip the arm rests and feel worried or put your hands in the air and say, ‘Wheeeee!’ Try the latter as the boat rides over big seas; it really helps. As a Brit you can buy scopolamine in the form of Hyoscine hydrobromide, over the counter. Travacalm or Quells, which can help in the first three days, while your brain might still be trying to make you get rid of the dodgy mushrooms it thinks you’ve eaten. Then it gives up. A tablet taken at the same time as a patch is applied as you depart will provide a quick rise to therapeutic dose level, which is then sustained. A problem with coastal sailing is you don’t get to experience that seasickness generally resolves after three days. Experiencing this can help avoid the circular problem of getting anxious about the prospect of getting seasick! Good luck with these strategies. It will get better for you. 🙂 Regards, Rick.

  • @SailingSnowGum
    @SailingSnowGum 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Re crossing the shipping lane, your responsibility is to sail straight and steady and as perpendicular to the traffic flow as possible. This makes it feasible for the big ships to predict your track with their equipment and adjust slightly to avoid you. Whereas, if you dodge and weave, you'll drive them nuts, increase the chance of problems and get in trouble with the traffic police who are watching on radar and AIS. If in doubt about a big ship's intentions, call them on 16 and follow their instructions on switching to another channel for a short discussion. The traffic police will be listening but they only intervene if necessary. Good luck! 🙂

    • @DelfinoDiscovers
      @DelfinoDiscovers 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi SnowGum, my understanding is that only applies in actual TSS zones? Because of the TSS zones off Normandy and Brittany the shipping lanes are still very defined. That said, we did not have to adjust course once to avoid shipping. All the ships close to us adjusted course slightly to widen the gap either behind or ahead. Seems they were comfortable with about half a mile CPA.

      Yeah it does lean a bunch! Really makes it hard to do anything down below

    If feeling sea sick - go on the helm and hand steer for a bit. It takes your mind off it and focussing on the horizon is something that the brain can compute I think! A round the world clipper skipper told me this and I have seen it work.... Then stay on deck for a bit - looking up and out to the horizon. Only go down below to lie down or very briefly e.g. to do the log. I hope that helps! Certainly feels great to have achieved a channel crossing.

      Age old tip of being busy and hand steering! Laura's not found it too effective for her in the past unfortunately. Thanks for the tips though

    Hi. Thank you for your videos which I am enjoying tremendously. I am about to work my way through them all having just subscribed. I was originally attracted to your Brittany video as this is where I love sailing. Based in Poole so an easy crossing. Anyway, besides your down to earth daily life you portray with honesty, I am particularly taken with your high quality video. Could I possibly ask what you record with? I ask this being aware that it is the professional filming and editing that produces the results!! Many thanks and happy sailing Jonathan

      Hi Jonathan, great to hear you're enjoying the videos! We are enjoying making them :) For filming, we use a combination of our phones (iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra), a GoPro, and recently a SonyA6700. I've realised you can go a long way without great equipment if you know how to use it. The vast majority of the footage has come from our phones.

    Congratulations! Hope you’ve managed to discover rillette. A ‘Q’ flag is only required on arrival to France if you have any goods to declare, so they’re a bit unusual in that respect.

    Loving the new videos guys, thank you. What was the issue with the alternator? I’m contemplating an upgrade to Balmar.

    • @DelfinoDiscovers
      @DelfinoDiscovers 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In the end it was actually a problem with the solar MPPT and the Cyrix Li-Charge that we had in place. Long story short but the Li-Charge (a relay) was not opening and the MPPT was pushing the voltage on the charge bus up to 16v. This was causing the BMS to shut down the charger system entirely! We have now switched to a Smart Battery Protect to do this job and changed up the way the alternator is wired (downstream of the smart battery protect with a dedicated solid state relay to disable the alternator in the case of BMS charger shutdown). I have to say, the Balmar has been awesome (we've got a 120A alternator) but it does get hot which makes me worried about how it will perform in warmer climates. It was also a real pain in the backside to wire up properly

      @@DelfinoDiscovers thanks so much for that reply, makes sense but frustrating at the time. Thanks also for your thoughts on the alternator. Our engine room is pretty big so hopefully not too much of an issue and I can always add some cooling. Fair winds.

    HI Kids. Further to my comments on your sailing to culinary adventures agenda around Europe, that you told me about when I raved over you New York nosebag tour. Could I possibly turn you on to a TH-cam channel "Pete's Pans" if you're not already aware? Doing something similar, but in his own way. Loved this episode by the way. Shame about the seasickness though. Peace and best wishes.
