“Ultralight gear does not last”… but these items did!
มุมมอง 23K3 ปีที่แล้ว
These are the gear items I've used on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Long Trail, Highline Trail, and so much more. Truth be told, very few items get swapped out due to their wear, but more due to changed wants or needs on the trail. For example, I still have my hammock setup from the AT, but this setup wouldn't work on the PCT, so I swapped to a ground shelter instead. There are it...

That is awesome! Next time add a front fanny pack for more food and water (and maybe padding for sleep).
You didn't show the design plan, soI'm watching you draw lines and cut fabric and I don't know what it is...
Holy crap. $40 for a pattern??????
Excellent Thanks
Can I ask whats the model year and frame size please
@@carerra911 2023 (still current) 54cm. It ended up being a little too big still for me at 5’6”
@@MeowHikes Thanks Pal!
Great review! Salsa does not provide the weight on its website. I think of two possible reasons. First, their manufacturing variance is too big. Due to low standard quality control, Salsa cannot post a reasonable weight. Two, Salsa is ashamed of its weight. Cutthroat doesn't have a suspension, but perhaps it weights as much as or more than a lightweight hardtail. That what I deduce from the lack of the weight spec. I had interest on Cutthroat, but not anymore.
By the way you remind me of Primoz Roglic! The cyclist🚴♀️💨
Are you thinking of doing the tour divide?☺️
Not Tour Divide race but the GDMBR
hey mate. whats that blue puffer?
Nunatak, they don’t make it anymore I don’t believe. Most similar would be Enlightened Equipment Torrid pullover
Great backpack! Which sewing machine is that?
Damn dog you homaged the Flextrek Whipsnake Backpack infomercial! Deep cut! 🎉
Is there somewhere we can get the pattern you used for this?
Not for this exactly, but Red Paw does carry a backpack pattern with instructions on how to sew all of the pieces together. It could be a great start to understand the fundamentals, and from there you could simply look at any UL backpack and figure out how it got put together. If you have any questions on a specific part or technique, reach out to me on Instagram and I’ll be happy to help

THE best review and comparison! I think you just saved me (from a mistake) and cost me ($$$) at the same time (; Thank you!
Hi~~ What’s your pants? So cool pants!!!!👍 I want buy your pants …tell me brand name!🙏
Awesome job on completing the trail. I really enjoyed the film.
Outstanding series. Thanks for posting. It really is amazing.
this is awesome man, i'm not an experienced backpacker (i did a few trips in boy scouts with gear that they supplied us) but i want to get into it, and after looking at the $300-400 name brand packs, i simply did not want to pay that much. after some further research i found hyperlite packs and saw that they were made with dyneema, and i immediately thought, maybe i should just buy some and make my own pack? i figured it would be outlandish and difficult, but i came to find out that many had done the same thing, but this video is amazing because you show every step of the process and make it much less intimidating for me. i can't wait to get started on my own gear. thanks for sharing your process, awesome video
Yo, looking to get the versalite, curious about sizing, I think we are about the same size, I'm 5,6 and 130ish. You think the small is right for me, hows the fit when you put it on over a puffy?
Yeah the small I’ve had a melly and puffy underneath it, while a touch snug, it worked great. I’d go small, we’re practically the exact same size
@@MeowHikes Perfect, thank you
How long was your rope?
It’s snags so so easy thou! My friends alpha fleece is a disaster now after a few hikes up here … I wish I could love this fabric
I hear that often, but I still use this one without snags. Maybe I’m just more careful? I think the sun hoodie combo helps protect the fabric, plus I don’t bushwack in it
love the pack and the video!! I am wondering if your way of having the Loop for the Hook on the back instead of the front is better, I always do it reverse, but never tried it your way. I guess with the advantage of your way is that the Hook is never hanging in the back
Good to hear about the Versalite. Thinking about buying one this year.
I had to go with the enlightened equipment because they have a extra wide quilt. My shoulders are too wide for most.

Trying to decide on size for me. How tall and what did you go for? I’m 5’9 inseam is typically 30-31
I’m 5’6”, same inseam and I went for the 54cm. That’d probably be a right fit for you as well, considering that this bike is still a hair big for me. If you’re committed to a Cutthroat, a friendly (keyword there) local bike shop would probably be game to order both sizes you’re in between and get you fitted on what feels best, if you bought from them. They’re on sale right now! Jump on it!
@@MeowHikesthanks!! Yeah thats why I wanna get one, LBS has one but only 56cm left on deep discount since it was also demo. I’ll have to look around for a 54
@@willschmidt7311 you try riding it? See how it feels, make sure you’re not too stretched out on it. It’s always hard for me to tell right away, but when I err on the side of smaller I’m usually happy unless it just feels crunched. Maybe they can get a 54 in for you!
@@MeowHikes yeah I tried a 54 a month back before it went on sale it felt solid but didn’t know if I should atleast try a 56, especially since its on a deeper discount Also hows it fare tor bikepacking? Did you wrap it up with helicopter tape or anything? Kinda worried about paint if i put handlebar bag on
@@willschmidt7311 the helicopter tape works great, the paint is soft on these bikes, so just tape it up right away if you want it to stay nice. I also installed a Swood Cycles T-Bar, and that keeps my handlebar bag off the head tube. I also rock a Tailfin Aeropack on the rear and a Rogue Panda frame bag, and it all works awesome together. Absolutely love this bike, might get a second wheel set + suspension fork for getting rowdy. Excellent bikepacking bike and I’ve stopped worrying so much about it being carbon.
Fugg Off and Pack
Right on, Merry Christmas
In my opinion, you used the wrong insulation mat.😅
Cool idea for an overnighter. I got thirsty just watching you climb out of the canyon 😅
My friends and I have joked about this while on the Escalante Route 😂
Really enjoyed this! Had a Glen Van Peski vibe to it. Thanks for bringing us along. Nice work!
Always enjoy seeing your adventures dude. Thanks for bringing us along and sharing the ups and downs. Impressive how much you could actually fit in that red paw pack!
I love your shirt. Where did you get it?
Disregard the last comment haha, I didn’t check what video I was on. I got it online from Hot Topic actually 😅 an acquaintance had this shirt and I absolutely had to have it. Can’t remember the name of the shirt though. If you find it, order a size up for sure
@@MeowHikes thank you.
I'm not a huge Skurka fan, but this truly is... stupid light.
I love the hip pack hike/camp plan! With just a few upgrades, pad, breathable SOL bivy, nuts(real food), pillow somehow and a bigger hip pack with an actual water bottle holder and I think it could be bordering on cozy. . . .maybe a base layer bottoms for sleeping warm. I think I could do it with nothing and it would be HORRIBLE!
My vote would be the Wind River High Route with nothing but a GG crotch pot, trekking pole, and a poncho tarp.
Y’all have way too much faith in me 😆
Now do the Hayduke with just your fanny pack.
Lmfaooo
This video was oddly satisfying and surprisingly well made considering your bare bones setup. Just when I thought the quest to lower one’s base weight was a race to the bottom, you took things to new depths. Now let’s see you do this with one of those little Patagonia nylon fanny packs.
Bahaha I used to have one of those fanny packs! Those things are incredibly tiny 😅 appreciate your support friend! Happy to see you Schiro! Miss ya on the ‘gram
Not sure if you brought one of those Garmin 'oh-shit' buttons, but probably a good idea in case
Think that's an irresponsible af dare. And you should know that, considering how close you came on water then food. Having someone picking you up at predesignated and with one night out, fine, but thats honestly as far as that experiment should be pushed far as I'm concerned. There's traveling light then traveling irresponsibly. But glad you had a good hike and that it worked out well. Great footage and narrative just maybe think of a better angle than encouraging folks to be irresponsible. You don't need that extra water til you really do.
I don’t find what I did irresponsible, given my experience hiking and my experience in the Grand Canyon. You’re welcome to disagree, without any knowledge of my experience of either. For anyone watching who found my cheeky comment at the end about “tell me in the comments you could do better” serious in any way, I’m not actually saying to go and do this, or go do better. Thank you for your concern, and thanks for watching
@@MeowHikes as I said, you went as far as it should be pushed well done. Cheeky dare or not it's dangerous to encourage folks to attempt to do the same. Or assume everyone seeing your video has watched your other content and is totally familiar with your experience and sense of humor or whatever. And "hey, that's a cool TH-cam idea, I bet I can do better" and get into trouble. But if you're comfortable with that, cool.
@@jenelaina5665yo ease up darling, he's just making a video pushing his limits.
Total legend! When you told me about this idea shortly after I met you so many years ago I only knew to laugh. Thanks for always inspiring me to figure out how to go lighter so that I can go farther more comfortably and have experiences I might not otherwise have!
You my boy Nick, I love you brother!
Next challenge: do the horse thief route with me this spring
@@michaelgelfeld4906 oh I’m so down to do horse thief, I’ve been so curious about that route after going down Nanko. Any more trips planned for you this year or is it on hold til spring?
@@MeowHikes soooo I bought a packraft haha so I'm going to do soap to rider in December just to test out the setup. More of a shakedown trip than anything. Really interested in looping horse thief by using the river though, come springtime
Hahahah😮not me
That was awesome. Glad you had good weather. Those mice at the beach camps are fearless!
Seriously! I’ve had times where the weather says it’s clear and it ends up being windy and rainy at the bottom. The mice down there are a different breed, super sneaky and have tons of hiding spots. It was a good time though!
Epic
great vid i like all of your vids...always fun to watch....thanks a lot for the great ul content and greetings from belgium....
So cool!
Leave a comment if you have a suggestion for another challenge like this for me to do!
I'm sorry but your night looked really uncomfortable. Just switching out the foam pad for a UberLite small (6 oz.) would have changed your life that night. Strapped to the outside?
@@jfruitt65 I tried my best to do this trip without the “dangles”, but yeah, I could put a quilt in a dry bag and hang that, then put the pad on the outside dangling and add more calories But then you could argue that the fanny pack isn’t my only “pack” 😅 Technically I could do 0 packs and just have dry sacks attached to a belt 😂
@@MeowHikes what was the sun hoodie you're using? Been looking for a good one and I liked he style of yours
@@melzabelle Montbell Cool Hoodie
Now I see. I asked in FB but now I know it is a pad wrapped around your stick
Yup! 😂
