It really just came down to timing, I was going to either hike the Winds or hike with him in Colorado. But we happened to be close by at this time, just missed him in the Winds, and I had to get ready for my Hayduke to AZT hike (currently on). And why not entertain a friend on a boring section?
Met him in 2017 along with Neemor as they were passing through Phoenix. Then ran into him again before he hiked the AZT/was filming Through the Great Southwest. Then again at PCT days 2019. Went on an overnight with him in 2020, then did some work for him going into 2021. Went on this hike and then now I work with him at Outdoor Evolution.
Poor Mr Darwin was a little upset about dirt bike riders on the CDT. As an inhabitant of the US he should know: Ignorance and stupidity combined with having no clue at all leads to such behavior everywhere in the world. Some people like to ignore rules and regulations just because they can. These kids are probably bored because their dad gets them what they want and he expects them to ride their bikes even in the most stupid places there are to ride a bike. Saw the same behavior near lake Tahoe were kids just rode on the PCT in a way that hikers were hit by the dirt they trow up with their bikes. I did nothing because you never know what they cary in their packs but if a bear gets them or if they drive full throttle into a big tree I don't know if I could cry for a long time.
I disagree with Darwin at times too, but I still love the guy. The ATC was asking people to get off of trail, and I think as a big name in this industry, it was the responsible thing to do, to tell people to get off. I think today’s day and age has been too wrapped up in cancelling one another for various reasons, forgetting that we can have a difference in opinion and still approach each other with love. I can find an agreement and disagreement with every single person I meet. That’s just the nature of being human, we’re all individuals, with a unique balance of what we believe. Social media has done too much to lump us as people into categories, and makes us more divided, becoming echo chambers of one another’s opinions instead of thinking for ourselves. I know this is a deviation from your initial comment, but I say all this to suggest this: if someone you follow makes a statement you disagree with, it shouldn’t be enough to make you dislike that person. As a creator, having to tiptoe around people’s sensitivity towards things gets really exhausting. We are, after all, creating for the entertainment of others, and if we cannot express ourselves in fear of people cancelling us, then we are being censored.

I haven’t been a fan of Darwin ever since he shamed the still-hiking thru-hikers last spring at the beginning of the public health crisis.
