There are so many important points to be made about this book, but, unfortunately, you hit hardly any of them. For instance, how does this translation compare to other Catholic translations, such as the Rheims-Challoner New Testament, or the New Testament of the New American Bible? Does this publisher's edition contain ALL the footnotes and cross-references contained in other published versions of the Confraternity NT? It seems the editions from Benziger or from Catholic Book Publishing have way more footnotes and cross-references than what you allowed us to peek at in 1 Cor. 3. Your focus on the size of the volume and the "self-guided reading plan" should've been of secondary importance relative to the translation itself, particularly its accuracy and readability. There is so much misinformation on the internet and even in print material about the various English-language biblical translations, and while you may not have deliberately added to it, you also didn't shed any new light on matters, either.
Great Review - Thx for showing the pictures. Definitely worth getting.
Every Missal has the order of the Mass!
Ok, this isn’t a missal. This is a devotional. Much smaller and cheaper than a missal. Missals are great but this is a cheap alternative
@ I know it isn't a missal. You said "I wish more books had the order of the mass." So I am suggesting that everyone buy a missal for that. Missals also have tons of prayers, the liturgy, etc... you can find some pocket missals for a fairly affordable price as well. But, a book like this is also nice to have.
Personally, i'm too OCD for this. If i miss a day or two it would screw me up.
@@E1DOLHANZ totally understand
I think I missed in the video how the daily readings are laid out. Are they grouped in chunks by year/cycle or are they all three cycles of readings for each day?
The Sunday readings have the ABC cycle and are grouped together.
I was just gifted with the December 2024 Magnificat Prayer and Mass Book, by my sister. A subscription. She lives in Las Vegas, I live in NYC. This book is just one way for us sisters to connect with each other. This is the best gift one could ever receive during this times of uncertainty , chaos, and adversity in our country. The readings, will strengthen our faith and we become even more closer to God and to the Blessed Virgin Mary .
Amen. May you too be united in faith and prayer
I'm having a hard time choosing... We are joining the church Easter 2025. I have 3 kids and I'm looking for a missal for my 7 year old, 10 year old and then for my husband and myself. At mass do you two share the same missal or carry your own separate ones? For my 10 year old I'm looking at the new St Joseph one. For my 7 year old, the living with Christ young Catholic missal 2024-2025. And for my husband the st Paul one in this video. I always overthink things and then after I get whatever I change my mind again..... I just want a good fit for everyone's ages.
Sunday missals for the kids and daily missal for my husband/myself
First of all, welcome to the faith! To be totally honest. I don’t know what good a missal for someone under 13 years old or so would do. The mass has a lot of moving parts and it may be difficult for a child to follow along. As for you and your husband, I would recommend this or the MTF Daily Missal. I have not done a review on the MTF missal yet but will in the next few months. I would recommend buying one for each of you. You may prefer putting ribbons in different places
@@ConvincedCatholicism our kids currently use the missal in the pew and the God-man missal, but flipping back and forth kind of puts off the kids and I think they'd enjoy their own to put ribbons in for easy flipping. I do like that the st Joseph one has some pictures in it for my 10 year old. I might end up purchasing and looking at home and returning if it doesn't work out for them. The others for the husband and I look good! 😀
I own the Sixth Edition of this prayer book (which pre-dates the 2011 changes to the Roman Missal) and this book has THE absolute best Examination of Conscience that I know of. It is meticulously thorough and "covers all the bases." It's worth owning this book for that alone and you will be fully prepared to receive the Sacrament of Penance if you use it beforehand. Great review and channel, brother.
Nice to know! Maybe I will get my hands on an older edition Thanks for the kind words!
@@ConvincedCatholicism It looks like it's in your version as well, based on what I caught on your flip-through.
The 1950s cover is absolutely beautiful. I ordered the modern inferior cover before even watching your video. lol I hope it arrives before needing to start the devotional.
Curious to see what its like
Would you recommend this or the Manual of Prayers by MTF or the Handbook of Prayers? Is the binding really terrible on this?
I recommend this over all. Binding is fine
Thank you! You're doing great things!
Is this same book that’s kept on the holy table at church?
Possibly but most would have much nicer books
I mean the content of the book?
@ yes
On the fasting note, St Martin’s Lent has begun. It’s the Advent Fast of Western Christendom.
The December 2024 Ember Days are after St. Lucy's Day, which is December 13 so the Ember Days are Ember Wednesday December 14, Ember Friday December 16, and Ember Saturday December 17.
@@michaelconnors7668 Thanks!
@@ConvincedCatholicism December 13, 2024 is a Friday, so Ember Wednesday is December 18, not December 14, Ember Friday is December 20, December 16 and Ember Saturday is December 21, not December 17. Now I have the days right.
Thanks for reviewing this book! What I like about TAN is that their books and reprints are suitable for those who attend The Traditional Latin Mass and / or the Mass of Pope Saint Paul VI. Spiritual Steps to Christmas could be an early Christmas gift for my Roman Catholic wife. But, please don't tell her about my plan. Its a surprise! 😉
@@AmericanShia786 I will keep it a secret for sure
Thanks for this. I will be purchasing it and hope to use it for many years to come.
@@Chris-no8yb I am looking forward to using it too
This is an excellent psalter. The corrections of the troubled Coverdale translation to the Septuagint and more poetic English is well done.
I think it is well done for sure
Its not written in Christian perspective??? Lol 😂 Marys assumption to heaven is history
You miss my point. The translation is not meant to promote a Catholic ethos but is meant to be an historic translation meant to provide a lens of what early Christians believed about the BVM
St. Maximus The Confessor and St. John Cassian are two of my very favorite saints to read. Thank you for this book review! Its much appreciated.
Hi, what time do you pray Matins? This is a lovely office book for Catholics new to the Eastern lung of rhe church.
Matins in the western rite was typically prayed around 1 or 2 AM Matins in the Byzantine Church is typically prayed around 7 AM
@ConvincedCatholicism Thanks!, I've been praying WR for years but trying to get used to other rites.
A rare harsh review! "No link for you!" I winced seeing the damage done by the bubble wrap coupled with a long wait and steep price. I join the legion of those who have struggled to do the breviaries "right." I do get frustrated when it's just an opening and closing prayer with a bunch of Psalms sandwiched between. The Psalms are good, but there's more in Scripture than the Psalms. That's why I love the variety of DW:DO, even if its lesser hours are so unchanging. I supplement and skip, dip into the LOTH. There's a freedom that comes with doing this for a while. The books are a vehicle to prayer, not ends in themselves.
I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to these books being a means rather than an end
Thank you for this video. A Catholic friend gifted me a copy of the Ordinariate prayer book as part of the journey I’ve been on from Baptist to Anglican to Catholic and that similar size of bible (and blue cover that matches my blue cover version will be awesome) and I hadn’t found that website to use to occasionally supplement with while traveling. Thank you much.
God bless you! That is a cool journey. Hope you enjoy using the website prayer.covert.org was a goto for me yesterday while waiting for my car’s oil change
@13:11 I love that, because this Breviary predates the calendrical changes of Pius XII, it still includes the Vigil of All Saints, otherwise known as Hallowe'en. Removing this, along with a slew df other vigils and octaves, has clearly proven to be a mistake. Being an Anglican book, though, I'm surprised the feast wasn't named All Hallows.
@@PaulNizinskyj I think they were trying to make this as Catholic as possible hence Hallowe'en
Would you say this book is still worth it for people who don’t attend a personal ordinariate parish? Are there any major portions that might be rendered “useless” because of that?
I think someone who used this book that is not in the personal Ordinariate can still use 90% of this book, the only section that is not immediately useful is the red pages
@@ConvincedCatholicism thanks!
Question about the Church Slavonic (this is a bit of nuanced/niche subject, so I don't expect you to know all the details): you called it Old Church Slavonic and mentioned Lenin's reforms. However, Lenin's reforms were to the Cyrillic alphabet, not the liturgical language. Old Church Slavonic and Church Slavonic are earlier and later forms of the liturgical language, with the development into Church Slavonic occurring as far back as the 11th century. I understand the book is written using the older Cyrillic script, but is the language really "Old" Church Slavonic?
Ad you correctly predicted, I am not sure. I do know that the text is an older form but is it Old Slavonic. That, I don’t know
@@ConvincedCatholicism I think I answered my question doing some more digging, but maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in. It is likely "Church Slavonic" written in old Cyrillic script. Sounds like "Old Church Slavonic" was in use many centuries ago, and was gradually replaced by "Church Slavonic". Both are descendants of a South Slavic language, similar to old Bulgarian.
Whilst living in Jerusalem, Our Lady, Saint Mary, appeared to Saint James the Greater in Spain. It was the first Marian apparition in history. Since Our Blessed Mother was alive, it was an act of bilocation.
As a child of Vatican 2 (b. 1964), I find the modernistic artwork to be comforting and complementary to the Church’s newer outreach.
I am glad you find it comforting.
Maybe copy the lectionary from the PB and put the copy with the bible.
That would be a lot of pages shoved into the bible. Not to mention it doesn’t solve the problem of searching for the passages etc. but thanks for the suggestion
This Missal was one of John XXIII first step toward the Novus Ordo Missae
How?
@@ConvincedCatholicism Has 1955 changes to Holy Week. The Calendar and some feast days were changed. Allows the faithful to recite along with the priest, Propers of the Mass, which has always been forbidden. Also allows the Pater Noster to be sung with the priest. Etc. I use a pre 1955 missal and I know I am safe and traditional.
Maybe it’s a generational thing but I am seriously repelled by the thought of using an office book that’s on an electronic device rather than a physical book. I’m in my 60’s and of the 10 (RC) priests in my traditional leaning Community at least half use an electronic device for their daily Office and it appalls me.
I much prefer a book and understand your sentiment
I’m 46, and I totally agree. An app is useful for reducing the load when traveling, but that’s about it.
Perhaps, if a 3rd edition is published by popular demand, the readings will be added. A good design and print font could produce a North American Daily Worship Daily Office with readings that is only slightly larger than the CTS Dive Worship: Daily office. This Daily Office is definitely a "diamond in the rough."
I would buy it in a heartbeat
Of course if wants the less expensive route, the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham also publishes Morning and Evening Prayer with the Coverdale Psalter. Simple as.
I reached out to the North American printer a few weeks ago. They advised me to just get the commonwealth edition. Very disappointing.
@@matthaeusprime6343 that’s a shame. They really are not the same book
At least they responded to you they didn’t respond to my email lol I was lucky enough to have a friend give me an extra copy he had but I’d love to buy more to give away since it’s already been such a blessing in my life
Is this book Catholic or Anglican Ordinariate ? Thanks
Anglican Ordinarate is Catholic. As in, in full communion with Rome
@ so it’s ok to use the Lancelot Press version of the St Benedict Monastic Breviary which is Anglican meaning the Vatican approves it for Catholic laity
@@duromusabc That is not a publication of the Anglican Ordinariate. That prayer book is excellent, but it does not have an imprimatur.
@@michaelborges9081 Anglican is different from Anglican Ordinariate ?
Yes. Anglican or Church of England is a seperate church from the Catholic Church. The Anglican Ordinariate is a group of Anglicans who were received into the Catholic Church
Thank you for your reviews! I have a lot of devotionals on my wish list now courtesy of your channel. I appreciate the comfort and peace you have been expressing on your channel!
@@AlexGalli-b7t Your words are humbling. Thanks for making my mission possible
The traditional English version is coming out soon.
To piggyback on this, also think this review is the second revision and the third revision/reprint solves many issues, including the translation bumps and psalter
Thanks for this always engaging and informative compare-and-contrast video! I have the St Michael's Diurnal but wondered about the "other one" from Lancelot Andrewes and weighed getting that as well (as if I need another prayer book!). Your video gave me such a good peek inside that I am safely assured I can skip it. Its mangling of the Salve Regina was the final dealbreaker. One thing I like about the St. Michael's is how it fits so snugly in the hand with a satisfying heft. I always hold it, whereas the Divine Worship: Daily Office I lay flat on the table when using that book. Always good videos--thanks!
@@g.p.ryecroft I am glad my videos allow for viewers to make informed decisions. The DW:DO is an excellent choice
God bless Charles, King and Martyr.
As a Western Rite catechumen, I appreciate this review a lot😊 May God bless you and keep you🙏
We are trying to learn. Thank you for your videos. Please up us to learn how to use this breviary.
thank you for the review! i bought this copy when it first came out with the whole pre order form. unfortunately i haven’t been able to use it because i still don’t know how to use it 😂 but thank you for the explanation!
I would advise you check out my other videos on the Divine Worship Daily Office books. God bless!
Thank you for your video! I just purchased this bible, and your video helped me make my decision. The print is surprisingly easy to read considering the small font, and the paper doesn't feel overly fragile. I'm planning on having this as my travel bible once I have it rebound.
Curious, where are you having it rebound?
This is great and always been. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I recently purchased this prayer book. It is a useful book, and it is a handsome book. Unfortunately the binding is so unmercifully stiff that it makes using the book a bit of a misery. Perhaps with some breaking in, or deliberately breaking the binding it will be easier to use.
I would hope it breaks in over time. At least you know it won’t fall apart
Just discovered your channel and it’s exactly up my alley! All the different breviary/missal explanations have been super helpful and I now definitely wish the Ordinariate here made this available.
Thanks for watching! I hope they reprint it
Buyer beware! Benedictine Daily Prayer is edited by a Lutheran minister and uses inclusive language. Brought to you by the Liturgical Press who published such dubious and heretical books as Heart Talks With Mother God and Woman at the Altar - both of which had to be withdrawn because they were not in line with Catholic teaching. One of the best breviaries was the 1962 edition of A Short Breviary - it’s a gem, easy to use and not a lot of flipping ribbons.
The 1962, is it still available?

I think I mention it is not officially approved.
What’s honestly off-putting about the Ordinariate mass is the banal Novus Ordo insertion of “earth has given and human hands have made” in the eucharistic prayer (offertory). The liturgy in Anglo-Catholic parishes is just fine. Why did the Roman hierarchy feel like it had to muck things up? It’s like the grotesque effect of inserting non-traditional language into a traditional wedding ceremony. You end up with a mongrel. Also, as the Ordinariate progresses, in future it’s unlikely there will be married priests. Very un-Anglican.
If the Ordinariate gets the same treatment as the Byzantines it will allow married priests but we will see
Love DWDO NAE!
Thanks for the video. I look forward to Part II. I really like the CTS Divine Worship Daily Office used in the UK. I never purchased a copy because I like using the Anglican Breviary and the Anglican Office Book 2nd Edition in tandem. I also have a modern reprint of the 1928 BCP with KJV and Apocrypha bound in genuine leather. Since I prefer the 1928 BCP to the 1662 BCP, if they release a 3rd Edition DWDO North American edition, I'd buy it. From what I saw of the contents, this Breviary looks good, except I wouldn't like the way the book is bound. Excellent review.
I prefer the 1928 too
I’m with you in hoping for a reissue. I’d love to get a copy, but they are hens teeth. Good on you to get this copy.
I really like your content. Prayerbooks and scale models are awesome
