The Power of Joy in Art: How Letting Go of the Tortured Artist Myth Transformed My Creative Process

      Thanks Val, I'm glad you liked it! That's a great question. For me, these studies are an exercise in understanding value relationships and simplifying shapes. I learn a lot in the process of doing the exercise, but I don't usually reference these exercises when working on larger pieces, if that makes sense. Also, I do plan on showing videos for the process of some of my solo show paintings - so keep an eye out for those when my show opens next year!

    ? Do you lighten up the photo in computer because a copy of photo seems darker. Or is this somthing you skip and just go painting. Love these blue compositions, indeed you can have fun with different colors, great idea !

    Hey, Great study. I realise with this study the paint is possibly a bit thick for what I’m about to ask, but once it was dry, is this the sort of thing you could experiment with multiple colour glazes over the top? If yes, what medium mix would you use to maintain the thick over lean rule? Thanks, Will

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! I've never tried it with these before, and as you mention the paint is a bit thick, but I do think you could do some glazing once the paint is dry. In the past I have used walnut oil for glazing, but to be honest I don't have much experience with glazing techniques. And it took forever to dry, so I think if I were to glaze again, I'd look into other options.

    Great video! I've come to appreciate that my biggest adversary is the state of the economy where I am *South Africa*. Thank you! That’s a great question, I’ll keep it in mind for a future video! The short answer is, I like painting both equally, but paying a model is expensive while painting the city/landscape is free. I did self portraits for a while, but got tired of painting myself all the time. Also, I find it harder to sell portraits, which is important to me since painting sales are my main source of income.

    Yes I took up painting here in the isolated bush in Queensland Australia five years ago. I took them to my local art shop to be framed. And I was embarrassed to even show my work to her. She invited me to enter the Regional Art Prize and can you believe it that I won the prize two years in a row. And I had no art friends no internet just my vivid imagination. And I can tell you that I think the main thing in art like music is not technique its composition. And I believe like music its a gift and some people just have it whilst others just dont. But sure you have to nuture this gift. And you can learn all the stuff but ultimately you have to be original and unique to make it big in art. The best thing is to do it to please yourself. I think abstract art and mixed media art seems to all follow the same old boring technique. And one looks much the same as the next. I also dont recommend using photographs to paint. This really stifles the imagination. I won the art prize because the judges were tired of art being copied from photographs that all have the same look. Art today because we have photography has to be so much more.

    You must be very proud of yourself. I did a different thing in a similar way. Quit a full time low income job to go to university at 36, graduated at 40 and finally started getting higher paying jobs. Went through the same process as you, e.g., wondering can I do this, accepting the risk of leaving a full time job, and having faith in the potential outcome, etc. I just retired at 65 and am loving the freedom to paint without distraction. It just seems to call to you, right?! You also made very wise and responsible choices along the way that allowed you to take the leap.

    Oil. Many people seem to have already commented on this method, of simply not washing at all. I may add to it, that when I need to clean mine, I first wash the brush in oil to get the pigment out with any kitchen oil. Oil dilutes oil.. 😄 Then wash the oil out with detergent

    Could you make a video about your art process, e.g. how you come up with ideas and the path you take to a finished painting? I'm an artist who draws from life (I mostly do life drawing and draw in my sketchbook) but I'm interested in creating more finished pieces and don't have any idea how to even start!

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you so much for your comment! That's a great question, and it's definitely a big topic-one that I hope to cover more in-depth in a future online course. In short, I don’t really make a strong distinction between “sketches” and “finished pieces.” What do you mean by "finished"? Are you thinking of larger works or more detailed pieces? For me, each painting is like a sketch, whether it’s large or small. My inspiration comes from my everyday life-I don’t actively try to come up with ideas, but instead, I go for walks and get ideas from what I see. I used to work exclusively on smaller pieces, but over time, I’ve gradually increased the size. Even then, I treat those larger works in the same way I think of my sketches. If you're used to working in a pocket sketchbook, try something slightly bigger, like an 8x8 surface, like I use in this video here: th-cam.com/video/0KwynxWEuz8/w-d-xo.html Here's another video where I show my process for even larger paintings: th-cam.com/video/MIEuowhMUH4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WfsW6rAbqJHdRTKc One thing to note is that larger or more detailed pieces can take more time, so if you’re interested in that, you might want to work from a photo rather than drawing entirely from life. I use photos for all of my large pieces for this reason. Hope this helps!

    • @christinakentart

      Yes, this is the one for sketching, but you can do some painting in it as well, since the pages are thick, almost like mixed media paper. However the wet media does make the pages warp a bit, so it's not perfect.

    I really needed this today. I have had trouble connecting with artists in my area because the majority are retired and its hard to participate in local shows because I have to coordinate drop offs since they usually want art dropped off in the middle of the work day. I feel sometimes like nobody understands why I am doing this and think I am delusional for imagining I could ever make revenue with my work. Also galleries in my area seem to prefer specific style of art like impressionist /realist and my art is sort of dark so even getting into shows sometimes is challenging. Anyway its all a huge bummer for me but this video makes me feel less alone.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s tough balancing a day job with art, especially when logistical challenges like drop-offs get in the way. And it sounds so isolating to feel like your style doesn't align with the preferences of local galleries. I hope that you stay true to your vision, and know that you're definitely not alone!
